My Favorite Transitional Tops to Wear Now (and How I’m Styling Them)

Happy Monday, friends! We’re headed to Iceland tonight, where my style will be all about layers and waterproof gear. But since it’s still warm here at home (and in many parts of the world), I thought I’d share my favorite transitional tops and how I’ve been styling them for this tricky in-between season, in case you’re looking for some inspiration.

Outfit Ideas for That Tricky In-Between Season

Here are some of my favorite looks from recent weeks, featuring my favorite transition tops. And once the weather cools down, they’ll also layer easily under jackets and cardigans for even more wear.

PAIGE Syrie Top

also wearing:  KUT from the Kloth Kelsey Kick Flares (8) // Dolce Vita Roslyn Leopard Mary Jane (8.5) //All Saints Alba Tote // Raffia Wrapped Hoop Earrings // similar link bracelet // Tom Ford Sunnies

I grabbed this top at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in July, and I’ve already worn it a ton. The scalloped edges and cable-knit texture add such pretty detail, the silk-blend fabric feels soft and luxe, and the rich chocolate brown is perfect for fall.

Sadly, it’s selling out, but this Halogen Cable Stitch Cotton Sweater Tank is similar and fully stocked (and more affordable). I love how it pairs with my rust-colored kick flares, while the leopard mesh flats add pattern and texture to tie the whole look together.

I’ve also worn it with my Frank & Eileen dark-wash trouser jeans and brown jelly sandals

also wearing: Frank and Eileen West Village NYC Wide Leg Trouser Jeans (29) // Loeffler Randall Dana Strappy Jelly Sandals (8) // J.Crew Woven Chainlink Earrings // Dolce Vita Balen Leather Shoulder Bag in Chocolate // Monica Vinader bracelets

And with wide-leg ankle jeans for a more casual vibe…

also wearing:  PAIGE Anessa (petite option) (29) // Loeffler Randall Dana Jelly Sandals (8) // similar earrings // Monica Vinader Beaded Stone Bracelet & Alta Textured Chain Link Bracelet // Loewe bag (bought in Italy)

It also makes a fun monochromatic look with brown utility pants and leopard slingbacks.

also wearing: PAIGE Anessa High Waist Ankle Wide Leg Utility Pants (29) (option/option) // PAIGE Wren Slingback Pump (8) // similar earrings // beaded bracelet // similar woven crossbody // Tom Ford sunnies

EVEREVE Bevan Crew Neck Sweater

This black sleeveless sweater with the gold button shoulder detail was an EVEREVE find! The fine-gauge knit is soft and luxe, and the slightly cropped fit makes it perfect with higher-rise jeans or pants. I styled it here with brown utility jeans and leopard slingbacks.

also wearing:  Paige Anessa High Waist Ankle Wide Leg Utility Pants (29) (option/option) // Paige Wren in Leopard (8) // Freja New York Hudson // J.Crew earrings .// similar link bracelet // Celine sunnies

It also pairs nicely with washed black denim and layers easily under my black leather jacket.

also wearing: Michael Kors leatheer jacket (M) // EVEREVE Bevan Crew Neck Sweater (M) // Frame The Lax Jeans (29) // Frame Twist Buckle Leather Belt // similar Vince booties (8) // Celine sunnies

For another spin on the monochromatic formula, I wore it with cropped black jeans and wedge sandals for dinner out in NYC last month, and it works just as well with blue jeans for more casual occasions.

LOFT Heathered Ribbed Wedge Sweater

This sweater has quickly become a workhorse in my transitional wardrobe, and it’s a really good price point. The neutral shade is so versatile, and the relaxed fit makes it easy to throw on with just about any pair of jeans or pants.

I especially love how it pairs with the rust kick flares. To complete the look, I wore Mary Jane flats with a fun cut-out design and a woven camera bag in similar shades of rich chocolate brown. I also like how these raffia wrapped earrings draw the eye back up toward my face.

also wearing: KUT from the Kloth Kelsey Kick Flares (8) // Splendid Ruth Mary Jane (8) // Clare V. Midi Sac (budget option) // Raffia Wrapped Hoop Earrings // similar link bracelet // Tom Ford Sunnies

This beige sweater is also the perfect complement to my chocolate brown wide-leg utility pants.

I finished this look with raffia mules to keep it lighter for the end of summer, but the leopard mesh Mary Janes would be a great alternative for fall.

also wearing: Paige Anessa High Waist Ankle Wide Leg Utility Pants (29) (option/option) // Steve Madden Ira Pointed Toe Mules in Raffia (8) // Clare V. Midi Sac (budget option) // similar link bracelet // Tom Ford sunnies

It also pairs beautifully with my olive green barrel-leg pants, styled here with neutral mules and a coordinating suede shoulder bag. By the way, these pants also come in khaki.

KUT from the Kloth Ashton Utility Barrel Pant (6) (also in khaki) // Vince Camuto Cobby Mule (8) // Tory Burch Romy Suede Shoulder Bag // similar link bracelet // Tom Ford sunnies

EVEREVE Aiden V-Neck Vest

also wearing: Paige Anessa 31″ (29) // Jeffrey Campbell Fathom Ballet Flats (8.5) // earrings // necklace // bracelet

Another EVEREVE find, I love the chestnut-and-sky-blue stripe combo in this v-neck sweater vest. It feels fresh and flattering, and the cropped fit makes it perfect for pairing with my Paige Anessa high-rise wide-leg jeans.

also wearing: Paige Anessa 31″ (29) // Jeffrey Campbell Fathom Ballet Flats (8.5) // Mulberry Amberley

I’ve also worn it with the cropped version and sandals, as seen below. I usually style it with blue jeans to echo the stripes, but it would look equally chic with camel or ecru. Fit-wise, this sweater runs a bit small, so I went with the medium, the larger of my two usual sizes.

EVEREVE Aiden V Neck Vest (M) // Paige Anessa Wide Leg Ankle Jeans (29) // Dolce Vita Dallen Sandals (8) // Jenny Bird earrings // t-bar pebble pendant necklace // similar bangle

Sanctuary Charisma Dolman Mesh Tee

Finally, this fern-print mesh top is a great choice for warmer climates because it’s so lightweight. I styled it with brown pants and brown jelly sandals, but as we move further into September, I’ll swap in Mary Jane flats or slingback pumps.

also wearing: PAIGE Anessa Ankle Wide Leg Utility Pants (29) (option/option) // Loeffler Randall Dana Jelly Sandal (8) // similar hoops // beaded bracelet // similar woven crossbody // Tom Ford sunnies

I wore it with a brown utility skirt and Mary Jane flats in New York last month, and it was such a fun way to bridge summer and fall while the weather was still warm.

also wearing: LOFT Twill Mini Pocket Skirt (8) // Splendid Ruth Mary Jane (8) // Clare V. Midi Sac (budget option) // Tom Ford sunnies

And it also looks great with blue jeans. I wore it to the theater one night with dark-wash flares and brown espadrille sandals, finishing the look with statement earrings for an extra point of interest.

also wearing: MOTHER Weekender in Teaming Up (option) (30) // Paige Jill Ankle Strap Espadrille Wedge Sandal (8) // EVEREVE Wesley Wood Earrings

Of course, these aren’t all the tops in my closet, but they’re definitely my current favorites for this late summer/early fall stretch when figuring out what to wear can be tricky. The key is choosing colors that nod to fall in styles and fabrics that still work while the weather hasn’t fully cooled off.

If you’re looking for outfit inspiration during this in-between season, these are great options to have on hand. They’ll carry you through the weeks ahead, whether you’re layering under jackets or swapping sandals for boots.

  1. It’s nice to see a variety of looks for the “in-between” season. Have a fantastic trip – I’ll be following along on Instagram. Safe travels!

  2. This s great! I struggle letting summer fashion and the warm weather “go”, and piecing items together to not be too hot or chilly. I’m on the north coast in CLE, and it can be 50 in the morning and 75-80 degrees by noon!
Have a great trip!! Enjoy every minute. Cheers!

  3. This in between season can definitely be tricky as far as fashion goes. Last week we spent almost every day in the pool and on the weekend we took our last trip down to the beach. Our days are still very warm and especially muggy. I’m gradually switching over to more fall light colors, but we still can’t add anything with any weight or anything that’s warm quite yet. That might not come till sometime in October.
I hope you and your husband have a wonderful trip safe travels and I’ll follow along on your adventures on Instagram.

  4. We are definitely in transition season now! These tops all work nicely, i love short sleeved sweaters. Praying that you and Paul have a wonderful vacation, I will certainly be following along on Instagram, especially on the Scotland and London legs of your trip. Cheerio!!

  5. Thank you for this post! As I’m in the process of slowly changing over my wardrobe, you have given me some inspiration on how to wear some of my tops multiple ways. I hope that you and Paul have a wonderful time, and that the weather will be good for you. 🙏 for safe travels!

  6. Cute sweaters. Yesterday wasn’t too bad here but generally too hot for sweaters. I’m looking forward to October when it begins to cool down some. I hope you have a good and safe trip.

  7. I’m pulling out jeans to wear tonight although it might still be a little warm. Texas stays hot until November some years, but I’m dying to wear sweaters and jeans!
