Greetings from Suðursveit, Iceland! I’ve been looking forward to sharing this outfit with you. The trench coat I wore last month in New York City turned out to be as practical as it is stylish, so I decided to bring it with me on this trip. I haven’t worn it much here in Iceland, but I have a feeling it’s going to be very useful next week in Scotland, and probably in London too.
Trench coats are timeless, but not all can handle rainy weather. This hooded version was perfect for that dreary NYC day—and the best part is, it’s on sale right now! I thought I’d share a little more about it in case you’ve been considering one. And if it doesn’t check all your boxes, I rounded up some other trench coat options at the end of this post.

London Fog raincoat (S) // EVEREVE sweater vest (M) // PAIGE jeans (29) // Jeffrey Campbell flats (8.5) // Mulberry Amberley // Jenny Bird hoops // Baublebar necklace
This coat also comes in traditional black and a rich Black Cherry, but I chose the Stone color for its versatility. I really like the contrasting buttons and the plaid lining along the button plackets.

At first, I thought the buttons and plaid were shades of brown, but they’re actually black, with a subtle hint of burgundy in the plaid. It’s very pretty and surprisingly versatile. As you can see, it also pairs nicely with the brown tones in this outfit.

The fabric has a bit of a sheen, so it’s not the soft twill you find on some trench coats. But that finish is what gives it the water-resistant quality that makes it so practical. I also appreciate the streamlined, single-breasted cut, which I find more flattering than the traditional double-breasted styles. And best of all, it has a removable hood—no umbrella required!

This coat runs true to size, and you can probably size down if you’re between sizes. I went with the small. It’s roomy enough to layer over sweaters and still manages to keep a slimming, streamlined look, which I love. I’ll be sure to report back on how it holds up in Scotland and London, but I have a feeling it’s going to earn its spot in my suitcase.
For my afternoon in NYC, I styled it over a short-sleeve sweater and wide-leg jeans. My ballet flats weren’t the most practical choice for rainy weather, but they worked out okay.

We actually took these pictures the next morning after the rain cleared, which gave me a chance to sit on the steps and show the outfit underneath. I carried a coordinating brown bag and added some gold jewelry for a little extra interest near my face.
And isn’t the building behind me just stunning? I couldn’t help but wonder who might live or work there—I can’t even imagine! Such a gorgeous spot.

As promised, I rounded up more trench coats for you to browse below, in case you’re in the market. I love how practical yet polished they are. I always feel a little more elegant in a trench!

Hi Jolynne, I love reading your post and getting outfit ideas from you. Its a joke in my house because every time I have on something new my husband ask….where did you get that and I say from Jolynne….needless to say I love my outfit advice 🙂
We are visiting the European Christmas Markets in December and I am picked an Obermeier coat. I am wondering how to pack/carry it around with me. Theres no way for it to fit in my suitcase. I am taking the AWAY medium and the AWAY carryon to bring back Christmas mugs and gifts.
Do you have any ideas to travel with a large coat?
Hey Vicki, that sounds amazing! I am not sure – all I know to tell you is to wear it when traveling and moving from place to place. But others with more experience traveling in cold climates may have more suggestions.
Hi! I suggest buying compressive packing cubes. You can squeeze down what you will need in colder spot and save room in your bag. I did that in New Zealand where I was limited on space and had wildly changing weather! Also, in EU they have really accessible goodwill type stores-I travel for marathons and frequently pop in for heavy/warm tossable clothes (they donate them at the start line).
Your trip to Iceland has been so interesting with stunning vistas everywhere! Glad you are having a great time, it’s been so much fun following along daily on Insta! As for the London Fog trench coat, I purchased it during the NAS but had to return it since the arms were too tight. I compared it to my trench from London Fog (same size M) from about 15 years ago and the sleeves are cut at least an inch smaller. UGH. Not good for layering over sweaters. Did find a Ralph Lauren one from Nordstrom’s that fit better and was the same color and style. Enjoy the rest of your time in Iceland, I love the red coat!
Interesting! Glad you found one that works for you. 🙂
Your trench coat is very nice! While I hope that the weather in Scotland and London will be nice, I know that you would like to get some use out of your trench coat since you brought it with you.
Haha, yes! I will take a little rain to make it worth lugging along!
Hi Jolynne, l’m looking forward to seeing what you end up wearing while in London and Scotland. We are going to Paris, London and Edinburgh in December and I’d love some suggestions about what to pack and wear while we’re there. I’m in Texas and not at all used to true winter weather. Thank you so much for the hard work and dedication you put into your work. It’s helped me choose pieces that really come together and look great!
I can definitely do a roundup!
Really enjoy following along with you on your trip. The scenery is beautiful! Love that red coat. Can you recommend some other colorful coats for fall and winter! Thank you.
Your hair is really looking good. It appears longer and thicker than usual.
I’m looking for a Trench like this but need cool tone stone color. In some photos it looks more yellow tone and others more cool tone. I prefer no plaid lining. I loved your one from last year…..Lighter cool tone and the single breast style. This one here looks great on you. Your pictures are stunning. It looks like a great adventure that is well deserving for you. Yes the events here are so hard. Tbs I you for posting to give us something lighter and good distraction.
The coat looks great on you! Most trench coats seem to overwhelm me–being on the shorter side. When I returned the Gap stripe sweater, I fell in love with a subtle print leopard jean jacket there! So all was not lost! The background of your pics with the black iron facades reminds me of my trip to Savannah years ago–beautiful.
Love your coat!!! And your trip looks amazing so far.
I have been on the hunt for a trench/ mac single breasted coat for a couple years now, and I’m having a hard time finding the right color. I’m hoping to find something in a cool tone more taupe than camel. Do you have any recs?
Enjoy your fabulous trip!
