What to Wear for New Year’s Eve

Happy Monday, friends! Let’s talk about what to wear for New Year’s Eve.

I know, I know, it’s still two weeks away, but if you wait until after Christmas to think about what you’re going to wear for New Year’s Eve, it will be too late to order anything.

Not that you need to buy something new to wear for New Year’s Eve, but at least get your outfit planned now, so if you do need to grab something to make it complete, you won’t end up scrambling or paying extra for rush shipping. As it is, a lot of the good stuff is already selling out.

I have a few options for you… first up, this sparkly jumpsuit featuring a relaxed wide leg, cuffed short sleeves, and an elastic waist with a tie belt.

EVEREVE Waverly Jumpsuit (S) // J.Crew Santorini bag with feathers // Marc Fisher Varla Pumps (8) // old Baublebar earrings // old Stella & Dot bracelet

This jumpsuit is so comfortable; it just pulls on easily and buttons in the back of the neck. If you need to use the ladies room, it isn’t a big deal at all.

It’s made of a stretchy knit that is remarkably forgiving, and you can easily wear shaping shorts underneath, if you want a little extra contouring and/or support.

Like a dress, a jumpsuit is basically a one-and-done look, making it super easy to style. I just added black suede pumps and a few pieces of sparkly jewelry in the same black and silver color scheme.

To jazz up the look even more, I carried this black feather bag, which I absolutely adore!

It’s quite a splurge for a trendy piece, but if you have a lot of events, it could come in very useful. (The lighting in this picture makes it almost look blue, but it’s black.)

Evereve touts this jumpsuit as an off-the-shoulder style, but I prefer it worn on the shoulders, like this.

It doesn’t look awkward or slide around or anything. I would just recommend a bra that has wider straps than what I’m wearing here.

If you need a topper, I recommend a faux fur jacket. The shorter styles are trending, and I love how this one has the zip-up front and spread collar, for a more relaxed look and feel.

Unfortunately, it’s starting to sell out, but this one is similar and pretty well-stocked, and both are on sale!

If your New Year’s Eve festivities call for a slightly more casual vibe, how about this velour top paired with washed black denim?

EVEREVE Carla Velour Top (S) // PAIGE High Rise Laurel Canyon in Slater (also at Nordstrom // on sale at Bloomies) (29) // Blondo Sadie Waterproof Boots (8) (dressier option) // J.Crew Square faceted necklace // Ettika Chandelier Earrings // Loeffler Randall Rhinestone Baguette Bag

I love the flattering v-neckline and smocked cuffs, and how the blue is somewhat unexpected for this time of year.

You could tuck it in, I suppose, but the 23″ length looks fine left out, and I like the more streamlined look.

These jeans are the PAIGE Laurel Canyon in the Slater wash. The vintage-inspired washed black wash has a casual vibe that’s offset by the trouser-style welt pockets and front seams. I’m totally into these right now.

They have a 35″ inseam with a 20″ leg opening and an 11 1/4″ high rise; and they’re on sale at Bloomingdale’s in limited sizes. You can also find some sizes at Nordstrom, and they’re fully stocked at paige.com.

I had mine hemmed because the 35″ inseam was waaaaaay too long for my 5’5″ frame, but the taller ladies will appreciate that!

I can’t say I’m loving my shoe choice here; these Blondo booties are more casual than I’d prefer with the accessories I’m wearing.

I think I even brought my Sam Edelman Usha stiletto heeled booties to the photo shoot, so I don’t know why I didn’t put them on. They would look much better to me, but if you’re going out in messy weather, these waterproof Blondos would be a fine option.

I dressed up this look with an oversized square faceted necklace and crystal statement earrings, and I really like this combination.

Usually I choose one statement piece and then a supporting piece, but I feel like these two are fairly equal in that capacity, but they don’t seem to compete.

I also carried my Loeffler Randall rhinestone baguette bag, but any sparkly clutch would do. The idea is to add some sparkle and shine since the other fabrics in the outfit are more matte.

This next outfit combines a metallic top with velvet flares, which is another nice way to do a casual-festive New Year’s Eve dress code.

The prices on these pieces are phenomenal, and you can use code JOLYNNE20 to take an additional 20% off your Gap Factory order through end of day (12/18/23)!

Gap Factory Relaxed Shine Splitneck Top (S) // High Rise 70’s Flare Velvet Pants with Washwell (29) // Marc Fisher Ulani Pointed Toe Booties (8) // Nina Crystal Frame Clutch // LOFT Crystal Shaker Necklace & Crystal Drop Earrings

Once again, a few pieces of carefully chosen jewelry and a sparkly clutch take the look to the next level. I’d top it off with a faux fur jacket, or maybe a faux leather puffer.

I went with a leather pointed toe bootie, in this case, to create a variety of textures. I don’t usually pair suede shoes and velvet pants because they seem to compete.

And here’s another option that’s basically the same outfit formula: velvet jeans with a metallic top.

Black Factory Shine Cutout Top (S) // High Rise 70’s Flare Velvet Pants (29) // old embellished ankle strap sandals // J.Crew Sequin Hoop Earrings

I think this cut-out top is so fun, and I like that it’s bra-friendly and has long sleeves. My only caveat is that it’s a little snug; I’ve ordered the medium, so I have a little more breathing room. I plan to wear this to a live music event on NYE weekend.

This time I went with a strappy sandal to add some extra bling to the outfit, but I actually wish I’d switched out these shoes for the booties in the outfit above, and vica versa.

I feel like the strappy sandals would look better with the short sleeve top, and the pointed toe booties would make more sense with this long sleeve top, but you get the idea!

If you’re one of the lucky ones with a more formal affair to attend on NYE, this Vince Camuto metallic sheath that I considered for my husband’s holiday company party would be my top pick. It’s still well-stocked on the Nordstrom website.

Vince Camuto Embellished Sheath (10) // Sam Edelman Kia Strappy Sandals (8) // Ettika Chandelier Earrings // J.Crew tennis bracelet // Loeffler Randall Bailey Pleated Clutch

Here’s a close-up shot of the fabric and the Ettika Chandelier Earrings.

And I love the combination of this J.Crew tennis bracelet and black Loeffler Randall Bailey Pleated Clutch.

Finally, if you plan to ring in the New Year in your pajamas… hey, there’s no shame in that game!

We hosted a party last year, but this year will be more subdued, and that’s just fine by me.

I love a good pair of festive pajamas, so I linked up some options for you below.

  1. Great post! I will be in jammies on NYE, because I’m working the next day at 7am (hospital). But I love looking at the festive outfits!

    1. I used to hate working New Year’s Day back in my ER nurse days, it was one of the craziest days of the year! Hope yours isn’t that bad! And good luck going to sleep with all the fireworks.

  2. I am placing an order with Bloomingdales right now 😊 and I’m trying the black Paige denim you’re wearing above. Please style them a few different ways for everyday wear! These look great on you… but as you know, I’m a huge fan of Paige! Thank you!

  3. NYE is the only time I just might have an excuse to want to wear those $98 faux leather Spanx leggings from a couple seasons’-ago lol. I saw a Pin of someone modeling them with a chunky acrylic metallic (silver/black) blend sweater and, I thought: that type outfit really went well together for a -ugggh!- “festive” setting (it toned-down the awkward edgy vibes of those a lot).

A joyous holiday season to you and your family (if I’m not here to chime-in again before 12/31)! Thank you for your blog and real-world fashion advice!

  4. The Gap Factory short sleeve shine top is now $13 if you combine the 50% off and Jo-Lynne’s discount of 20%.

I have some Paige Genevieve black jeans that need to be hemmed. I’ve never hemmed jeans because I’m 5’7” and mostly lower body. I was going to make an appointment at Nordstrom where I ordered them from. Do I wash them before I take them or bring them with the tags on?

    1. I recommend washing first so if they are going to take up any, you will have them hemmed exactly how you want them. They don’t have to have tags on, but they may look up your order to verify you bought them there. Or you can bring the tags with you to make that easier – they have that sticker with a return code on the back, usually.

  5. Loving the pj options. I’d prefer to be out on NYE but I’m guessing I will be in jammies. As we get older, more and more of our friends have kids and don’t want to go out that night.

  6. I love this cutout top (and if you still have the small feel free to just send it my way ha ha). I love it every time I see you posting about it. Love all the looks/suggestions for this post – they are more my style than dresses for sure.

  7. Just love the cutout top with those velvet flares, very cute outfit. Your tree is so pretty, I also use the cranberry beads on my tree, think they are at least 40 years old and have clear glass icecycles that I hang too.
Love seeing your pretty festive outfits!

  8. Some really nice choices! My husband and I will be home in our comfy pjs eating appetizers while watching TV 😂

  9. Cute outfits. I’m sorry but that first purse looks like a bird nest or worse the hair of someone scalped. That’s what it reminded me of. I’m afraid to look at the cost.

  10. Well, I just ordered that cutout top! I’ve been loving it, and with your code it came down to $11 and some change! 🙌🏻 I want it for NYE, but we may be going to a bonfire so more casual will be in order. Oh well, it will be great for date nights!

  11. New year’s Eve is my birthday 🎂 (yay, I’m a Christmas 🎄 baby)and I don’t plan to wear anything special.I will celebrate it with my family,so I’ll keep it casual.Just jeans (lol, what else?😊)or maybe dressier pants(navy blue cordies which read as velvet,so smooth and plush they are)? don’t know, but knowing myself, I’ll stick to jeans and a nice blouse, prolly.😂 I’m a plain Jane at heart.
