In my Fall Fashion Forecast a few weeks back, I shared 11 of the biggest fashion trends to watch for this fall, and one of them was Breton stripes. (Breton stripes are uniform, evenly spaced horizontal bands of navy and white, often associated with sailors uniforms.) While Breton stripes are particularly big right now, all stripes are trending, so I did a roundup today with stripe shirts in a bunch of different styles.

Gap Crewneck Tee // Whether you’re layering it under a blazer, a moto jacket, or your favorite cardigan, this striped crewneck is the perfect base layer that works with anything.

LOFT Striped Sweater Vest // It’s not just navy-and-white stripes making waves this year — we’re seeing every color of the rainbow. I’m especially loving the chunky knit of this sleeveless sweater from LOFT.

Evereve Velvet Ciara Pullover // The bold, wide lines of this pullover, combined with a vibrant pop of red, add a fun touch of drama to your fall looks. I love how this pairs with blue jeans.

Gap Oversized Crewneck // This oversized crewneck has a laid-back look that’s both cozy and effortlessly cool. Camel is one of my favorite neutrals for fall, but you can also snag it in a navy/white combo.

Madewell Bouclé-Knit Crewneck Sweater Tee // Short sleeve sweaters are a great transition piece for those early fall days when the weather still feels warm. This one has a super comfy bouclé-knit that adds a nice texture to your outfit.

Michael Stars Mock-Neck Rib Top // The chic ribbed mock neck and cap sleeves make this top a great pick for everything from the office to drinks with the girls!

Rails Half Zip // This striped half-zip is the perfect finishing touch for a laid-back look with jeans and sneakers.

I love the look of stripes but I always hesitate to wear horizontal stripes because I think they accentuate my bigger chest and muffin top. Do you have any suggestions how to incorporate stripes for those of us who are broader across? Thanks!
Yes, they can. Diagonal and multi-directional stripes can distract from the areas you don’t want to draw attention to. Vertical lines are elongating, but they can also highlight the lumps and bumps, but it depends on the garment.
I agree. Maybe it’s just me but I don’t feel it’s as noticeable when the background color is darker like navy or black. I think it’s because those colors are slimming.
When we left our youngest at college, I cried half way home, about two hours. Then when we got home, I went in her room and she had left us a sweet letter. The tears started pouring again. It’s the circle of life. ♥️🙏
Awww, that’s so sweet.
I like stripes, but horizontal stripes can make petite women (like me) look shorter. Types of stripes that work best for petites:
-Vertical stripes (harder to find but very flattering; more apt to be found on shirts)
-Pinstripes (vertical and a single color, which is always more flattering on petites)
-Narrow stripes on lightweight or thinner fabrics (thick stripes shorten, and bulky fabrics weigh down petites)
-Tone on tone stripes – navy on pale blue, taupe on cream, dark pink on light pink (low contrast, similar to wearing one color)
We mom’s go through this void when our children leave home to go to college.
It’s especially hard when their room doesn’t have their stuff in it, the house is quiet and no conversations and watching a TV show together,
🥲 but it will get better with time, hang in there Jo_Lynne
You will be fine.
I don’t comment very often but your story this morning brought memories back when I went through this and just wanted to let you know that you will get through this soon, and the girls are fine.
Thanks, Anna. Very much appreciated. ☺️
I totally understand what you are going thru. Leaving my kids wasn’t that hard, but it really hit me returning home to their empty bedrooms! My youngest daughter went off to college last year which coincided a month later with my oldest daughter getting married, so life was full of emotions for me last fall. Knowing my oldest was never coming back home was the hardest! I’m currently nearing the end of a week long visit with my “bookends” as I call them – my youngest daughter and I are visiting my married daughter who lives across the country in San Diego. Younger daughter then flies back to college in Chicago just three days after we return home from San Diego! That said, we are not fully empty nesters yet as my older son moved back home after graduating last year but he works full time so my husband and I don’t see too much of him. Best of luck to you as you transition to this next phase!
I can relate, my oldest is at home too, but working and has a social life, so it’s not the same as the girls. Sounds like a great week long visit!
Yes……the empty room back at home is the hardest. You just need to get home and get into your routine and then you will be okay. I like stripes but usually wear them in the Spring/Summer. I don’t tend to wear them as much Fall/Winter for some reason. Although, I bought the blue/white Faharety sweater you recommended and I’ll wear that into Fall I’m sure.
Thank you for explaining what Breton stripes are! There are some great options.
Jolynne did you find the brown and tan striped Liverpool sweater to be sheer? I saw a picture with the model wearing a tank under it. It was barely visible thru the sweater but the tank was white, which I always find shows up more. Think a nude bra would suffice?
It’s thin but not really sheer, I am find with just a nude bra.
I love the stripes! This is a fabulous post of ideas and looks with stripes! Thank you!
