My spring uniform usually consists of some type of denim (often light wash or white), a simple layering top, and a lightweight jacket that I can throw on and take off as needed. The jacket is really the hero piece here, and the one I reach for most this time of year. It’s so versatile and perfect for unpredictable spring weather.

More polished than a cardigan but more relaxed than a blazer, this third piece adds just enough warmth while still feeling like part of the outfit. I can wear it indoors if I need an extra layer or take it off and still feel pulled together.
Every spring, I like to take a closet inventory and reassess my everyday wardrobe essentials, and lightweight jackets are always at the top of that list. I’ve come across quite a few really good options this year, so I thought I’d round up my favorites to share with you today—along with a few ways to wear them.
My Favorite Spring Layering Jackets
SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and typically wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29 or 30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8.5 shoe. I often fall between sizes these days, so fit notes matter.
This Quince linen jacket is a really nice option if you’re looking for something more classic. I love the flax color, but it also comes in a few other great neutrals.

It pairs beautifully with both white and blue denim. I’ve worn it with a light blue sweater tank and white jeans, a beige stripe tank with white jeans, and a brown tank with blue jeans. You could also wear it over a casual dress or pair it with the matching linen pants.
Fit note: This jacket runs a bit small, which I often find to be the case with Quince, so I went with the medium.

Another linen jacket I’m loving this season is the Scout Soft Utility Jacket from EVEREVE. It has a shorter, boxy shape with tonal front button closures and oversized utility pockets, and it comes in several great colors. I went with the olive in a size medium.
Fit note: The small fit in this one, but it felt a little too short; the medium gives me a bit more flexibility with different outfit pairings.

Short-sleeve jackets are trending this season, and I really like this option. I discovered the KUT from the Kloth Piper Short Sleeve Jacket at EVEREVE, and liked it so much I picked it up in both the Mushroom and blue denim.

I wore it over a navy tank with white jeans and some fun accessories to meet a friend for lunch while I was in Florida. I also styled it with that beige stripe tank and white jeans for a chic, monochromatic look.
Fit note: In this case, I was able to wear the small.

Here’s how it looks in the mushroom color. It’s a really nice neutral beige that ties into the ecru denim trend for spring. I tried it on in the fitting room with a brown tank, white slim wide-leg ankle jeans, and a pair of beige perforated Mary Janes. I really like this outfit; it just needs a belt and some jewelry to complete the look.

Another layering jacket I’m really enjoying right now is the Jessa Utility Bomber from EVEREVE. It combines an airy linen-blend fabric with utility details and a bomber-style silhouette. I especially like how the dolman sleeves have a button tab, so you can cuff them and leave them in place. Also, the buttons are a really pretty hammered silver, which creates a nice bit of contrast.
Fit Tip: I was able to take a small in this jacket, as well.
FYI, the Madewell Remy Mary Janes I’m wearing here just went on sale! I love the black perforated leather pair with silver hardware, but I’m also eyeing the Dark Carob woven leather and the raffia version. I find these flats extremely comfortable, and they true to size. I wear the 8H (Madewell’s version of an 8.5).

For a lighter jacket option, the Splendid Lounge Denim Jacket is super soft and comfortable. The drawstring waist adds some shape, and the extra pockets add a nice bit of detail. It has raglan sleeves, which soften a stronger shoulder line, and an easy, relaxed fit.
I love this Moonstone color, which is a soft ivory, and it also comes in two shades of blue denim. I styled it here with a simple white tee, blue jeans, and camel suede perforated slingbacks, plus a coordinating belt for a more elevated look.

I’ve also worn it over a white tank with light pink barrel pants and light Mary Jane flats to bookend the look. Both of these soft color palettes feel especially nice for spring.
Fit tip: I take a medium in this jacket, so you may want to size up if in between.

Finally, I’ve found a couple of nice updates to the classic denim trucker jacket this year. The KUT from the Kloth Genevieve has a shorter, boxy silhouette with a modern zip-front closure, and the slant pockets add a bit of edge. It’s made from super-stretchy denim for a flexible fit that moves with you throughout the day.
I styled it here over a pink top with white jeans and neutral wedge sandals, and it also works over casual dresses.
Fit tip: I went with a medium in this jacket, for a little extra layering room.

For a more oversized, trend-driven look, I love the Risen Pocket Detail Denim Jacket from Social Threads. I’ve been wearing it a ton lately because it’s so easy to throw over a casual dress or pair with a tank or tee and white jeans or non-denim pants, which makes it the perfect travel jacket.

Fit tip: I ordered the medium, but I could probably wear a small. I don’t mind the extra room, though—the oversized look is kind of the point.

I’ve tried quite a few this season, but these are the layering jackets I keep coming back to. They’re easy, versatile, and work with just about everything.
If you’ve found a great one lately, I’d love to hear about it!

Is the Quince flax one the same exact match to the Quince flax button and front pocket linen pants? You have them and I do too. I see them modeled with elastic linen pants so wondering if same flax name but wouldn’t match pants we have. If they do will you wear them together?
They are an exact match. I might wear them together at some point. I think they’d look good with a simple white tank and gold sandals and gold jewelry.
I love this post – lightweight jackets are a staple here in AZ all summer long since we live our AC here. Also, the links in the first outfit are not working or go to a different item.
I love your “uniform!” It always looks very classy and styled and intentional. I put the Piper jacket in my evereve cart in both colors. It really looks like a fitted cut. Should I not size up?
I didn’t. I tried the M and it was too big.
I have the Quince linen jacket in navy. I ordered my usual extra small and it fits well. I really like the denim short sleeve jacket. Is the long string thing hanging on a jacket a thing now? I tried a similar style yesterday but I didn’t know what to do about the hanging string.
To clarify I’m talking about the cream jacket with the long strings hanging. Is that a new style now?
I don’t know… I guess I’ve seen it a couple times.
Thank you for creating this post! I am looking for some new jackets and have now found a few that I want!
Great jackets. There are several I like the look of.
Can you also add the link for the checkered bum bag please??
Yes! Right here. https://go.shopmy.us/p-50521218
Hi Jolynne
I wear slip dresses all summer and into fall (transitioning them with boots and jackets). I left a fav denim jacket in an uber and can’t seem to find a replacement that works. Mine was 10 years old. I see you wear a lot of denim and some shorter dresses.,Can you recommend a topper or jacket that would work with slip dresses and summer sandals? I have the fitted linen tie front sweaters fr Nick & Zoe but they look dated and unhip lol.
Perhaps the Splendid lounge jacket in moonstone? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Hi Patti, the Splendid Lounge Jacket is really nice, and I think the shorter length would look good over dresses. Either Moonstone or one of the denim shades would work, depending on what you have in your closet.
