Hey friends! I’ve been nose to the grindstone, working on this Try-On Haul ever since I got home from shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale today. This is when Nordstrom brings out a bunch of new fall styles and marks them down for a limited time, and historically it’s been one of the best times to grab new fall styles at a discount, so you can enjoy them the whole season.
I pulled together pictures of everything I tried today in the Nordstrom fitting room, and I’m sharing all of my fit and sizing notes, as well as my impressions of the quality wearability of each piece.
SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29 or 30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.
MOTHER The Weekend Fray Flare

MY THOUGHTS: The MOTHER Weekender is my favorite style of jeans, so I couldn’t wait to try this year’s #NSale version so I could report back to you. I really like this medium to dark wash, and they have the really good MOTHER denim fit and feel (very stretchy and comfortable), but they run reeeeeally small. I couldn’t button my usual size 29, and they didn’t have the 30 or 31, so I’m wearing the 32 here.
VERDICT: I left these in the store and ordered the 31. I don’t really need them since I have a similar pair with a finished hem, but I wanted to try the 31 to report back to you. And my fray hem pair is old, so I might just replace them with these.

MY THOUGHTS: This is one of MOTHER’s most popular styles—a super stretchy, high-rise, ankle-length bootcut jean with a raw cut hem. I like the medium wash, and they’re super soft and comfy and run true to size. They’re a tad snug in the 29, but the 30 would probably be too long in the rise.
VERDICT: I have a very similar pair, so I did not buy these, but they’re a great pair of jeans if they’re on your wish list1

MY THOUGHTS: I spotted this while walking through the store and grabbed it because I love the color palette. That said, it’s very snug and not the most forgiving on my middle-aged middle.
VERDICT: I left it in the store, but the quality is great and the colors are gorgeous. Definitely worth trying if it catches your eye!
Steve Madden Ira Pointed Toe Mules

MY THOUGHTS: These are super cute and come in lots of colors. The quality isn’t amazing, but they get the job done.
VERDICT: I brought these home. I love the raffia with the gold hardware, and they’ll transition nicely into fall.

MY THOUGHTS: This has a classic look, but I’m not personally a big fan of the drop shoulder. I find it can add a little extra volume through the upper body, which isn’t always the most flattering. That said, it’s incredibly soft and cozy, and I do like the relaxed fit and versatile length.
VERDICT: I didn’t bring this one home, but it’s a solid option if it’s the style you’re looking for.

MY THOUGHTS: This sweatshirt wasn’t on my radar during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Preview, but my stylist pulled it for me in-store, and I was pleasantly surprised. The fabric is incredibly soft and plush, and I love the relaxed fit. The price is a little high, but since I live a very casual lifestyle, I can see myself reaching for this a lot.
VERDICT: I brought this one home with me!

MY THOUGHTS: These sneakers were a fun surprise. I didn’t notice them online, but I spotted them when I was browsing the shoe department, and I thought they’d be a great addition to my sneaker wardrobe.
VERDICT: They do run a bit small, I think the 8.5 was probably the right size for me, but I got the 9 just to be on the safe side.

MY THOUGHTS: I grabbed these just for fun. I had a feeling I might not love them on me, but they’re modern and playful, with a slightly rigid denim. The large cuff and slouchy fit are right on trend, and while the 100% cotton felt stiff at first, I can see how they’d soften up and break in nicely.
VERDICT: I would have kept them if I thought I’d reach for them, but knowing myself, they just feel a little too relaxed for my style, even with my casual lifestyle.

MY THOUGHTS: I have this tee from last year’s #NSale (the Margarita version), so I wasn’t planning to get this year’s. But Barb (my stylist) put it in my fitting room, and I couldn’t leave it behind. I really like the contrast of the red on washed black, and the heart-shaped MOTHER graphic adds such a fun pop of color.
VERDICT: I bought this one, and I sized up to a large for a more relaxed fit.

MY THOUGHTS: I have last fall’s version of these, and I love the fit, but I never cared for the fading on the thighs. These have a much better wash, and they’re super comfy, but very long. I tried the size 30, but I could probably wear the 29.
VERDICT: I brought them home, but also ordered the 29 to compare.

MY THOUGHTS: I’m so happy to see Aquatalia boots back in the #NSale this year! Evidently, the company who bought them out went bankrupt but they’re back! They make such a nice quality shoe that is water resistant and weather proof.
VERDICT: I bought these, and I sized up to a 9 for extra room for socks.

MY THOUGHTS: This sweater is suuuuuper soft and feels like much better quality than the price point indicates.. It has a flattering v-neck, but it’s a little long and snug at the waistband. Even so, it’s selling out rapidly, and I think it will end up being a really good basic to have in my closet.
VERDICT: I brought this one home with me (in both the brown and grey) but I also ordered the next size down to try. I’ll report back!

MY THOUGHTS: This is one of the first pieces I got excited about when I was shopping in-store today. It has such a nice, easy fit, and the knit is a nice quality. I like the shorter but not cropped length with a boxy fit and side slits. It also has those gussets under the arms to cover the bra straps. It also comes in a soft camel, and it runs true to size.

MY THOUGHTS: These jeans were at the top of my wish list, so I was a little bummed they only had a size 29 in-store for me to try. I think the 30 would feel more comfortable, although these don’t look bad. I love the grey wash with just a hint of fading and distressing, and the slim straight fit.
VERDICT: I bought these and ordered the size 30 to compare. Stay tuned!

MY THOUGHTS: I think I’m a little spoiled because I have a very similar Vince sweater from last year in a luxurious 100% boiled cashmere—it’s thick, soft, and incredibly plush. I was hoping this one would feel the same, but it’s thinner and doesn’t have quite the same luxe vibe. That said, it’s 90% wool/10% cashmere rather than 100% cashmere, and the price point reflects that. It’s still a solid option if you’re looking for this style, but I felt a bit underwhelmed.
VERDICT: I didn’t buy one, but they’re a really nice fit and come in three great neutrals. I recommend sizing up if you’re in between sizes.

MY THOUGHTS: This cowl neck top is a really nice nice base layer; it’s a lightweight sweater fabric, but it runs a bit small. I kept the size small, but I wonder if the medium would be better over time. I try not to put tops like this in the wash, but sometimes it happens.

MY THOUGHTS: This jacket is super luxe, and it smells amazing, but I wasn’t sure I like the styling at first. It felt a little too cropped and wide through the shoulders, but the more I wore it, the more it grew on me. I think it’s exactly what I need to top off my casual t-shirt and jeans outfits this fall for dinners out and other casual occasions.
VERDICT: I brought it home, but I’ll keep the tags on for a while and see if I reach for it.

VERDICT: Despite that, I didn’t bring this one home with me. I just couldn’t get excited about it.

MY THOUGHTS: These booties are gorgeous and so comfortable. I have a similar pair from last year in that Hazelwood color that I love, so I tried the black this year, and they are equally as stunning. Also, super comfy and walkable. Highly recommend.
VERDICT: Get a pair of these! I bought the black, but if I didn’t already have a similar pair, I would get the Hazelwood too.

MY THOUGHTS: These light wash jeans have a rather flattering shape, and I like the higher rise, but they’re tight in waist. I wanted to try sizing up, but I was afraid the 30 would look baggy in crotch, and I was too lazy to go back out and grab them. 🤪
VERDICT: I left these in the store, but I’m wondering if I should have brought them home and tried them with some of my summer tops. I could really use a new pair of straight leg ankle jeans with a finished hem in a light wash like this. All that to say, don’t count them out!

MY THOUGHTS: I really like this faded light wash, and they’re comfortable too, but I don’t love the look on me. They’re very straight, almost wide, but not quite relaxed. I just feel like I look better in jeans that hug my thighs a little, even if they flare out or are wide on the bottom. That said, these are comfy and very much on trend, so don’t count them out if you like the look!

MY THOUGHTS: Okay! This style is not new to me (or probably you) but for a wide leg silhouette, they’re very forgiving because of the way they hug the hips and thighs before flaring out into a subtle wide leg silhouette. This is the faded black wash, and the denim is a bit more rigid than in the blue jean fabrics, so I sized up to a 30.
VERDICT: Bought the size 30!

MY THOUGHTS: This is one of those pieces Nordstrom brings back every year, so it can feel a little tired, but I was impressed with the quality. While some of the bigger brands seem to be phoning it in, Nordstrom’s in-house line keeps stepping it up. This sweater feels like a great bang for your buck. The knit is super soft and luxe, and the raglan sleeves are really flattering. My only complaint is that the hood feels a little heavy.
VERDICT: Because of the heavy hood, I didn’t bring it home, but it’s a beautiful sweater. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it if the style appeals to you.

MY THOUGHTS: This is the longer style of the PAIGE Anessa, with a 31″ inseam and a faded medium indigo wash and a raw hem. For a wide leg jean, these are quite flattering because of the way they’re cut slim through the hip and thigh. The 31″ length is perfect for me to wear with a lower heel bootie.
VERDICT: I brought these home with me too!

MY THOUGHTS: This jacket is interesting, it’s very thick and a little bulky, but kind of cute. The bubble hem and bubble sleeves give it a fashion-forward look, but it seems to run a bit big.
VERDICT: I ended up leaving this in the store, but I might go back for it. It’s kind of fun, and the price is right.

MY THOUGHTS: These jeans are soooo flattering, and the size 29 just fits. I just don’t love that super dark inky wash. I had a very similar pair from last year’s #NSale, and I even had them hemmed since they were a little too long with heels, but I never wore them.
VERDICT: I didn’t buy them but they may work for someone out there! They’re great jeans.

MY THOUGHTS: These fit comfortably, but I wasn’t crazy about the wash. I feel like they’re more flattering from the rear than front.
VERDICT: I didn’t buy these, but they’re worth considering if you like the color/style.

MY THOUGHTS: This is another version of the popular PAIGE Anessa, in a velvety soft chocolate brown wash with utility pockets and a relaxed ankle-length fit. The size 29 is perfect, so I’d say they’re true to size, or size down if in between.

MY THOUGHTS: I wanted to love this dress, but it fit me verrrry snug, and I can tell that if I were to size up, it would be a little long in the armholes. I suppose that could be altered, though… It really is a nice piece, fully lined, and very pretty. I love the contrasting buttons.
VERDICT: I did not buy this one, but I might reconsider and try the size large. I just don’t have the need for a lot of fall dresses, and I kept the suede one, so… we’ll see.

MY THOUGHTS: These boots are a solid choice, if you need a knee-high style in a chocolate brown for fall. They’re super comfortable and extremely flattering. I love how they’re cut close to the ankle, to create a more shapely leg line. I found them to run true to size, or you can size up if in between.
VERDICT: I bought these. In fact, I like them so much, I came home and ordered the black leather!

MY THOUGHTS: This top is super cute, it can work with jeans for a date night look (as seen here, although I’d probably go for a pump like these or these rather than boots.) Or it can be a really nice work wear piece, as seen below.

MY THOUGHTS: I love this skirt for fall, especially if you need work wear, but it could also work for church or date night dinners out. It has a traditional pencil skirt silhouette, and it’s a super soft faux suede in a versatile neutral shade of beige.

MY THOUGHTS: I wanted to love this dress, but it was too snug in the medium, and I could tell if I sized up to a large, it would be too long in the torso. As it is, the medium is too long in the chest.
VERDICT: I left this one in the store, but I think it’s a great dress. If you’re taller than my 5’5″, it may be worth a try!

MY THOUGHTS: This dress is great quality, super comfortable, and easy to dress up or down. I almost brought it home, but I wasn’t crazy about how the sleeves folded under the armholes, and overall it’s a little more body-con than I tend to reach for these days.
VERDICT: I didn’t keep it, but if I had an occasion coming up that I thought it would fit, I would have definitely grabbed it.

MY THOUGHTS: I was pleasantly surprised by this dress. For one thing, the quality is beautiful. Once again, I’m so impressed with the Nordstrom brand pieces in this year’s sale. Also a shift style doesn’t usually do much for me, but this one feels surprisingly flattering. It doesn’t define my curves like a sheath would, but as my shape changes with age, I actually like how it skims the body for a simple, classic look.
VERDICT: I did purchase this one! I’m eager to try it on with a better shoe pairing.

Great pics thanks. Just wondering, the nordstrom scuba knit bomber jacket , what were you planning on wearing this with? I have a similar jacket and need tips on what to wear it with!
I’m not even sure, lol. I just thought it was interesting to try. I would probably just wear it over a tee or sweater with jeans.
JoLynne—Great try on. Did you order the other black leather jacket? Curious how that runs and if you’ll keep both leather jackets. I liked that one because it was clean and minimal hardware—no zippers on the sleeves which allows them to be shortened for a petite person like me.
Do you have the larger picture of the suede dress you purchased? I wish it came in another color other than brown. Brown has been so on-trend but it’s a color that does me no favors.
I did! I ordered the small. Crossing my fingers it fits. I should have ordered both sizes, but in my experience, Andrew Marc coats run big. I’ve had a few over the years. I agree, it is a much more classic and timeless jacket. The AllSaints is fun, but it’s very trendy. I’m not sure I’ll keep both, I do love a leather jacket, and they’re very different, so I can justify having both, but only if I really like the AllSaints one. I am still on the fence and want to try it with other jeans that provide a better balance for the volume in the shoulders.
And yes, I meant to put that dress in the post! I was bleary-eyed last night by the time I finished this post. I’m planning to go back through and proofread and add anything I missed last night… including that dress!

Do you think the Halogen Cap Sleeve Top runs a little big? Looks like there is plenty of room in the small you are wearing.

Yes, but it runs like Halogen tops like that always run. They’ve had that style for 100 years, lol, and they always fit like that. I could not size down, though. When I move around, it pulled a bit on the sleeves. Not that it looks bad; it’s the right size, but I just mean, I could not size down.
The allsaints Ryder leather is SOLD OUT!
UGH! I had a feeling it wouldn’t last long. Here’s my 2 cents. The fit is a little awkward. The leather is gorgeous, but it’s short and boxy and there’s a lot of added volume in the shoulders so I think there will be a lot of returns. I would watch for restocks. (I was a little back and forth on it. I need to try it with some other things before I’m sure I’m keeping it.)

One question – the Veronica Beard Kelby Booties are gorgeous. It looks like you may have tried them in the 8 and 8.5, what size did you go with, and is that the US size? I am normally a size 40 in EU shoes, but that translates to a 10 in the size chart (not my normal 9). Thanks!
I only tried the 8.5 because I know from experience, that’s what I usually wear in their booties. I am usually a 39 in EU sizes, if that helps.

I would say it runs a bit small. Or it’s intended to be quite tight. I went with the medium, and I really wanted to go back and try the large, but I was too tired, lol. In looking at these photos, I think the medium is probably the right size, tho.
I think the post has a little mixup. Your words say you like the suede minidress, but the picture is the tweed minidress. To Kristy the commenter, you said you like the buttons so I think you’re talking about the tweed not the suede. Maybe??

I love how those Paige Billy’s look on you but I usually find Paige to be not as forgiving in the waist as Mother’s….I have a pair of Agolde jeans similar to the Billy’s but I need to update them for a more comfortable waist. Yes, same. That’s why I haven’t been wearing as much PAIGE lately. MOTHER is just way more comfy.
You have a lot of patience to try on that many pairs of jeans! A couple items you tried on are in my wish list, and by how they fit you, it will help me decide if they will work for me or not. I don’t get access to the NAS until 7/11. 🙂
I wanted to try more, I feel like there are so many more I could have shown you. I didn’t even get to KUT from the Kloth, but I had to draw the line somewhere and get on home. I hope what I have is helpful! I may order a few more to try here at home, if they stay in stock.
Thanks for all your hard work on these sales posts, Jo-Lynne. I placed my order this morning. Sadly, a few items were already sold out, like the Mother tee, which I really wanted. But I’ve had good luck in the past receiving alerts when something is back in stock, so maybe I’ll still be able to get it. I have the same tee in black, which I paid full price for, and my cost-per-wear is now lower than many of my cheaper tees. I tried to keep that in mind when putting items in my cart as I’m working on paring down my closet. I ordered several pairs of Mother, Frame, and Paige jeans, the small suede Madewell bag in brown, the Mother sweatshirt, the Faherty hoodie tees, a pair of brown suede Adidas sneakers and several cashmere pieces. Expedited shipping was not offered to me. Anyone else had this happen? I gave up on waiting to chat with someone and Googled it. Apparently, if an item is coming directly from the manufacturer, there’s no expedited shopping. However, I was able to arrange pick-up from my closest store for today and tomorrow, so that makes no sense.
Yes, I don’t think that they were offering it on the anniversary sale because nobody seems to have had that option. I think it’s probably pretty smart on their part. I know they’re trying to cut down on disappointment when people don’t get their orders, but it seems like it’s working pretty well this year. Fingers crossed…

Appreciate all of the photos and comments from your try-on haul. Love so many of the sweaters, booties and the VB sling back pump. The Suede dress is tempting for Texas, but I’m curious if you will wear something over it? As I almost 63-year-old. I have figured out that I really don’t need much in the way of clothing but rather more places to go!
I get that! Finding places to go is a bigger challenge these days than finding cute clothes. I don’t really plan to wear anything over it, not a cardigan or anything. Maybe a coat, like pictured on the website, if I wore it in the fall.

Thanks for all your work! It’s so helpful and a big time saver. I tried on the Paige Anessa and Laurel Canyon at the store yesterday and loved them both, but especially the Anessa. Would I stand out as a tourist if I wore them in France this fall?

Thank you for all your effort! LOVE that suede dress! I put it in my Wish List, but before I make the purchase, I am wondering what type (and color) of boot (as I foresee myself only pairing this dress with boots) you’d recommend? I already own a pair of black suede over-the-knee boots as well as a light camel color suede over-the knee boots, but the double suede makes me think it’s too much of a good thing, and to my mind’s eye, any other shade of brown than something that matches exactly is a no-go, but maybe a smooth leather knee-high pair in a rich chocolate brown would be the best option? I’m probably overthinking this, but if I don’t have the perfect dress/boot pairing, this beauty of a dress will likely face a dismal future of never leaving my closet.
Jen what about a tan? Darker than nude but not as dark as caramel? Especially a creamy leather for contrasting texture?
I was thinking a black leather boot. I feel like the shade of brown would look nice with black, and another shade of brown could look off. I also like Megan’s idea of a cream leather (this boot comes in cream and a pretty “Summer Beige”.
A lighter tan or chocolate brown could work too, as long as there’s enough of a contrast that it doesn’t look like you’re trying to match. I also like the idea of going with a leather boot, for a different texture than the suede, but I’m sure suede would work too. Oh, and I want to try the dress with the PAIGE leopard heels!
Leopard heels for the win! I also love black and brown together, although I know many people don’t. I think the key is to have enough of each color to make it look intentional. Once the weather cools off, this dress could be cute with either black knee high boots or black tights with black heels or short booties, topped with a black jacket. Maybe black suede for the shoes and black leather for the jacket to mix up the textures?

I love that Reformation top on you – did you consider trying it in a larger size? It looks like it wasn’t part of the sale, so maybe not worth the effort, but I thought it was flattering (and different). I can’t tell if the colors would work for me, but I may have to go to the R store and check it out.

The Mother sweatshirt is fun!! I wear a small but might size up to Medium. Do you think this could work? I would be okay if a little oversized or do you think small gives enough room (as I don’t want it too oversized). I usually follow your recommendations for shirt sizes.

Ugh–the Paige jeans are going back–I just didnt think they were worth the price point and even though I’m short at 5’3.5″, I would of liked them a tad longer. I’m keeping the SE Barrett harness dark brown suede booties that were on sale–very cute and they werent super high either–came across them when looking at your tall suede boots.
