2025 Summer Try-On Haul: Closet Staples, Statement Pieces & So Many Good Sales!

Hi, friends! I’ve been working on this post all day, and it’s finally ready to go—better late than never, right? (This is what happens when I take an afternoon off!)

This try-on haul is a mix of closet staples, fun statement pieces, and a few surprise favorites. I’m sharing what worked, what didn’t, and what I’m reordering in a better size. Bonus: so much of what I’m wearing is on sale! I marked everything beneath the photos. Okay, let’s dive right in!

2025 Summer Try-On Haul: Closet Staples, Statement Pieces & So Many Good Sales!

Summer Styles I Tried This Week

As usual, I will provide measurements and fabric content on each item when I can find it, and I’ll share whether I plan to keep it or not. Just remember, even when I decide not to keep something, it doesn’t mean it isn’t worth checking out. I just may not need it, or it may not work for my body type or lifestyle.

Caslon Elbow Sleeve Denim Jacket

at Nordstrom (S) // Caslon tank (S) // AG Mari (30) // Veronica Beard Via (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Abbreviated sleeves make this stretch-denim jacket great for warmer weather, while gathered shoulders and rounded pockets add charming details.

  • Elbow-length sleeves
  • Chest button-flap patch pockets; side welt pockets
  • 98% cotton, 2% spandex
  • Machine wash, line dry

MY THOUGHTS: This is such a fun twist on the classic denim jacket! The elbow-length sleeves and curved hem give it a slightly feminine, modern feel without veering into overly trendy territory. I wasn’t sure I’d like it at first, especially after hearing some mixed reviews from a few of you, but I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it on.

The denim feels a bit stiff at first, but it softens with wear, and the structure works well with the cropped shape. The back hem dips just enough to offer a bit more coverage, and the puff sleeve helps balance wider hips or extra volume on the bottom. The light wash is perfect for summer, and it runs true to size.

VERDICT: Keeping! In fact, I wore it to church on Sunday.

LOFT Stitchy V-Neck Cardigan

at LOFT – 50% off (M) // Caslon tank (S) // AG Mari (30) // Veronica Beard Via (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Cool is in the details for this soft and stitchy cotton knit cardigan, a fresh twist on an eternal essential. V-neck. Bracelet sleeves. Button front.

  • 21″ long
  • 100% Cotton
  • Machine Washable

MY THOUGHTS: This is a great little lightweight layering piece for summer. Cardigans can sometimes read a little frumpy, but the open-stitch texture on this one gives it a more modern feel. I also love the 21″ length—short without being cropped. It comes in a bunch of pretty colors, and while it runs true to size, I sized up to a medium for a more relaxed fit.

VERDICT: Definitely keeping. I don’t have any summer cardigans, and this will be nice to have in Maine later this month.

LOFT Checked Lace Trim Mixed Media Shell

at LOFT – 50% off (size S) // MOTHER Hustler – 30% off (similar at Bloomies– 25% off) (size 29) // Schutz heels – 30% off (size 8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: From the pretty lace trim to touchably textured woven check front and soft knit back, this shell is all about the sweetest details.

  • 24 1/2″ long
  • Front Body: 100% Cotton, Back Body: 100% Rayon
  • Machine Washable

MY THOUGHTS: I’m so sorry I didn’t take more pictures of this blouse—I shared it on Instagram Stories and must’ve forgotten to grab a better variety of shots. It actually hangs nicely when untucked, but it’s just a smidge too long on me (at least with ankle-length jeans), so I gave it a front tuck.

It’s a mixed media top, which I always love. The woven front adds some structure while the knit back keeps it soft and comfortable. It also has a subtle woven check texture and a flattering split neckline with covered button details. It comes in black too, but I really like this pretty shade of crimson.

VERDICT: Keeping!

LOFT Banded Hem Muscle Top

at LOFT – 50% off (M) // MOTHER Hustler – 30% off (also at Bloomies– 25% off) (size 29) // Schutz heels – 30% off (size 8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: In rich heavyweight cotton jersey, this muscle top is a sporty-chic staple – freshened up by a flattering banded hem.

  • 20 1/2″ long
  • 100% Cotton
  • Machine Washable

MY THOUGHTS: This top is so fun! I love the mixed stripe print in a crisp navy and white palette—and you know I’m a sucker for a good muscle tee. The banded waist is a fresh twist on a basic tee, and the length is just right. That said, I did find myself tugging at it a bit, so I was surprised when I looked at the tag and realized it was a medium—I had assumed it was a small.

All that to say, it’s super cute, but definitely size up if you’re in between. And bonus—it’s 50% off right now!

VERDICT: I think I’m keeping this. I just will be sure to pair it with higher rise jeans—like these MOTHER Hustlers with the 11″ rise.

MOTHER The Hustler Ankle Fray in Healing Jar

at MOTHER – 30% off (similar at Bloomies– 25% off) (29) // LOFT banded waist top (M) // Schutz heels – 30% off (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Pick your potion. This bestselling high-rise flare has an ankle-length inseam and a raw hem. Made from stretch denim, Healing Jar is a mid-blue wash with fading throughout.

  • 11″ Rise; 27 1/2″ Inseam; 16″ Leg Opening
  • 94% Cotton 5% Polyester 1% Elasthane
  • Made in Los Angeles

Speaking of which, I pulled these out of the back of my closet to pair with this top, and I was reminded how much I love them—plus, I just noticed they’re 30% off! This is one of MOTHER Denim’s most popular styles: super flattering, highly versatile, and easy to dress up or down. Mine are a bit snug at the moment, which is probably why I haven’t been reaching for them, but I still love the wash and the overall fit.

There’s also a similar pair on sale at Bloomingdale’s right now with more sizes available, if yours isn’t in stock.

FRAME The Eyelet Tank in White

at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s (M) // MOTHER Hustler – 30% off (also at Bloomies– 25% off) (size 29) // Veronica Beard Via (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Solely crafted from organic cotton, this square neck tank is trimmed with intricate eyelet embroidery and scalloped straps. Picture perfect for sunny days and a picnic in the park—or just dressing like you planned one.

  • Back button closure
  • Square neck
  • 100% cotton
  • Dry clean

MY THOUGHTS: Okay, this one is a major splurge, but wow, is it gorgeous. The cotton poplin fabric is crisp and elevated, the eyelet detail is perfection, and the button-up back adds such a fun surprise. I also love the boxy fit and cropped length. That said, it runs quite small; it just fits me in the medium, and I think it would work better on someone smaller up top.

As much as I love it, I don’t think I’d get a good cost per wear, since I don’t have many occasions to wear something like this. And for the price, it really needs to feel tailor-made—and this one just misses the mark for me.

VERDICT: Sadly, I can’t justify keeping it—but if it works for your shape and lifestyle, it’s a beautiful piece. I also rounded up a bunch of similar options at more accessible price points, if you’re interested!

Rails Shoshanna Stripe Puff Sleeve Top

at Bloomingdales (some sizes at Nordstrom) (S) // PAIGE Leenah Ankle – on sale! (29) // Schutz heels – 30% off! (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Pintucks bring charming texture to a breezy, breathable linen-blend popover top marked in easy stripes and framed by high-volume puff sleeves.

  • 23 1/2″ length
  • Button half placket
  • Band collar
  • Elbow-length sleeves
  • 55% linen, 45% Lenzing™ EcoVero™ viscose
  • Hand wash, dry flat

MY THOUGHTS: This is another splurgy top, but I was drawn to the beautiful fabric, and I’m just a sucker for a Rails blouse. It really is pretty, but it’s verrrry sheer, and the oversized puff sleeves don’t do much for me, especially paired with the relaxed shape through the body. I kind of knew this wouldn’t be a winner, but I ordered it anyway… it doesn’t hurt to try!

VERDICT: Returning. It’s beautiful, though, if it works for your body type.

PAIGE Leenah Ankle

at EVEREVE – major sale! (8) // Rails Soshanna (some sizes at Nordstrom) (S) // Schutz heels – 30% off! (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: These wide leg jeans by Paige are the perfect addition to your denim collection, featuring a medium blue wash and ankle-length raw hems. The cotton-blend denim gives them a soft, vintage feel you’ll reach for again and again.

  • Material: 99% Cotton, 1% Elastane Denim
  • Care: Machine Wash Cold, Tumble Dry Low

This is another pair of jeans I pulled out of the back of my closet when I was doing these try-ons, and I forgot how good they are. I love the silhouette and the faded medium blue wash—it’s such a nice shade for summer. They’re slightly rigid but have just enough stretch to be comfortable, and they’re marked way down right now. I found them true to size; I’m wearing the 29.

KUT from the Kloth Jane Short

at EVEREVE (8) // Rails Soshanna (some sizes at Nordstrom) (S) // Dolce Vita Lorene (7.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Say hello to warmer weather in the Jane Short by Kut From The Kloth, finished in a bright white wash.

  • Zip Fly
  • Front Rise: 10 1/2″
  • Inseam Length: 4 1/4″
  • Leg Opening: 25 1/2″
  • Material: 97% Cotton, 3% Spandex Denim
  • Care: Machine Wash, Wash Cold, Tumble Dry Low

MY THOUGHTS: I’ve worn a variation of these shorts for years, and this pair is a really nice, simple classic. The leg opening feels a bit wider than some of my older pairs, but that could just be because they’re new. I do love the crisp white wash, finished hem, and flattering 4 1/4″ inseam.

VERDICT: A good basic white denim short, if you need that in your summer wardrobe!

LOFT Cinched Linen Blend Vest Top

at LOFT – 50% off! (M) // PAIGE Leenah Ankle – on sale! (29) // Schutz heels – 30% off! (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Chic, cinched and perfectly buttoned up, this fluid woven linen blend vest top always knows how to polish.

  • 23″ long
  • 55% Linen 45% Viscose, Lining: 100% Cotton
  • Machine Washable

MY THOUGHTS: I love how this top combines the trendy vest silhouette with a peplum—it’s such a fun twist on a classic. The linen/viscose blend is light and breathable for summer without being too sheer, and it’s fully lined, which is a nice bonus.

I only ordered it in the medium, but I think I need the small. It feels a bit too long overall, and in this photo I’m actually holding the shoulder up to show what a better fit might look like. I may try the petite next to see if that helps.

VERDICT: Undecided; I may reorder in a smaller size or try the petite.

Caslon Relaxed Tank

at Nordstrom (S) // AG Mari (30) // Veronica Beard Via (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: A warm-weather essential, this knit tank has a relaxed fit and plenty of linen for a lightweight, breezy feel.

  • Scoop neck
  • 49% viscose, 40% linen, 11% polyester
  • Hand wash, dry flat

MY THOUGHTS: This is a really solid basic tank in a linen blend that comes in a variety of colors—including this White/Navy Blazer Stripe. The fabric is light and breathable, and the fit is easy and relaxed. I just wish it didn’t have the rounded shirttail hem—it feels a little dated to me, and the longer length isn’t as fashion-forward right now. That said, it’s a good staple that I think a lot of women will still really like.

VERDICT: I’ll probably return this, but it’s a solid option if the shape works for you.

Vuori Villa Utility Stretch Romper

at Nordstrom (M) // Beek flip flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Easy all-in-one style is the name of the game with this stretchy woven romper complete with cargo pockets that add to the utilitarian appeal.

  • 86% polyester, 14% elastane
  • Machine wash, tumble dry

MY THOUGHTS: This romper was a fun surprise! I’m usually hard to fit in one-piece styles like this because I have a longer torso and a very high waist—an odd combo, I know. But for whatever reason, this one works really well on me, and it’s so comfortable. The fabric is incredibly lightweight and breathable—kind of like parachute material, but nicer.

VERDICT: I think this one might be a keeper! What do you think?

Reiss Akari Printed Midi-Dress

at SAKS – 30% off! (8) // Schutz heels (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Reiss’ Akari midi-dress features a ruched, smocked waist and round neck, finished in a striking mono print.

  • Slips on over head
  • Scoop neck
  • Sleeveless
  • Side-seam pockets
  • 52% linen, 48% viscose
  • Machine wash, line dry

MY THOUGHTS: I ordered this one on a whim because it was on sale, and I couldn’t resist the elegant chocolate and ivory swirl print, but I wasn’t sure the style would work on me. I figured the quality would be great (it’s Reiss, after all), but the fit actually surprised me. It may not be my most flattering silhouette, but I kind of like it for a change. The smocked waist creates a nice shape, and the bra-friendly straps are a major plus.

I originally ordered the size 8 (shown below), thinking I’d need that or possibly a 10, but I found myself fussing with the middle and one of the straps kept sliding off my shoulder. That had me wondering if I could size down to the 6…

size 8

I decided to give it a try, and I’m so glad I did. I think the difference is noticeable even in photos—my waist looks more defined, there’s less extra fabric, and the straps actually stay put. And best of all, it’s still very comfortable.

size 6

VERDICT: I’m tempted to keep it and wear it to my birthday dinner tonight, but it’s still a bit of a splurge, even on sale, so I’m debating whether I’d get enough wear out of it to justify the price. I’ll probably decide at the very last minute—knowing me! I did get a pair of flat brown sandals in that I think I might like with it, so I’ll try them on tonight, take a few pictures, and then decide.

FYI, if you prefer sleeves, Saks also has this shirtdress style in the same fabric, and it’s on sale too!

Citizens of Humanity Brynn Shorts

at EVEREVE (29) // EVEREVE rib tank (M) // Sam Edleman Harlyn sandals (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: An adjustable drawstring waist defines these versatile Citizens of Humanity jean shorts.

  • Button Fly,Drawstring Waist
  • Front Rise: 12″
  • Inseam Length: 6 1/2″
  • Leg Opening: 25″
  • 67% Regenerative Cotton, 22% Lyocell, 11% Recycled Cotton
  • Machine Wash Cold, Tumble Dry Low

MY THOUGHTS: Alrighty… I have a feeling these shorts might elicit some strong opinions! I like them in theory—they’re a great wash, and the contrasting drawstring adds a trendy, sporty touch. The longer inseam is also very on-trend right now, and I appreciate that they give a bit more coverage without going full Bermuda.

That said, I’m not sure they do much to flatter me. Here’s how they look with a tank fully tucked in (not my favorite look, but I thought I’d try it and see.)

Then I tried them with the Nora Muscle Tee and gave it a front tuck instead. This combination looks a lot more balanced and flattering to my eye… but I’m still undecided on the shorts themselves.

VERDICT: I’m debating… I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Also, these sandals are really cute and comfortable. I love the mix of gold leather straps with the brown footbed—it feels a little elevated while still being super versatile. They go with just about everything and would be easy to pack for vacation or wear on repeat all summer.

Faherty Open Stich Everyday Tote

at EVEREVE // Citizens Brynn shorts (29) // Nora tee (M) // Sam Edleman Harlyn sandals (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Carry your warm-weather necessities with the Open Stitch Everyday Tote by Faherty.

  • 11″ H x 16″ W (at top); Handle Drop: 12 1/2″
  • Woven Raffia, Leather Handles
  • Hand Wash, Spot Clean

MY THOUGHTS: I love the size of this raffia tote—it reads more like an everyday carryall than a typical beach bag, which makes it feel a little more polished. The leather straps are a nice elevated touch, and the quality is really good overall. It’s roomy without being bulky, and it adds great texture to any summer outfit.

VERDICT: I think this one’s a keeper!

White House Black Market Metallic Scoop Neck Tank

at WHBM 25% off! (S) // MOTHER Weekender (30) // Reformation sandals (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Add a dose of shine to your summer outfit with this metallic scoop neck tank top.

  • Fully lined
  • Length: 22 1/4”
  • 64% Rayon, 36% Metallic
  • Machine wash cold

MY THOUGHTS: I was drawn to all the gold tops on the White House Black Market site, and I love how metallic gold pairs with white denim for summer, so I ordered this crochet tank to try. I appreciate that it’s fully lined and has a good length and bra-friendly straps.

I tried both the small and the medium, but the medium felt a little too long and loose, so I’m wearing the small here, but looks a tad snug—all I can see is that little bump above the waistband of my jeans. Maybe that’s more of a jean issue than a top issue (a higher rise would help), but these are the jeans I’d most likely want to wear with it.

I also feel like this outfit needs a topper of some kind—and I just don’t have anything in my closet that really works. On top of that, the color isn’t great on me. It’s a beautiful shade, but it doesn’t do much for my skin tone.

VERDICT: This one’s probably going back. I don’t love it, but it’s 25% off right now, if you’ve had your eye on it!

White House Black Market Ruched Mesh Tank

at WHBM – 25% off! (S) // WHBM Pret Utility pants – 25% off! (8) //  Tory Burch wedge espadrilles (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Asymmetric ruching down the front and back give this mesh tank top a fitted + flattering look. It is also lined for coverage.

  • Fully lined
  • Length: 23 1/2”
  • 80% Nylon, 20% Spandex
  • Machine wash cold, may be dry cleaned

Now this top, I really like. I’m not sure why I didn’t order the medium to begin with! This is the small, and while it technically fits, it’s definitely too snug for my comfort level. I think the medium will drape better and feel more flattering overall.

That said, I love the color palette and the print, and it pairs so well with black bottoms. I’ve already ordered the medium to try instead.

VERDICT: Reordering in the next size up!

White House Black Market Pret Utility Wide Leg Cropped Pants

at WHBM – 25% off! (8) // WHBM mesh tank – 25% off! (S) //  Tory Burch wedge espadrilles (8)  // Dolce Vita Lorene sandal (7.5)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Introducing the newest silhouette in our Pret collection, this high-rise utility wide leg cropped jean is made for adventure.

  • Back zipper pockets
  • Regular inseam: 24 1/2″, Short: 22 1/2″, Long: 26 1/2″
  • 77% cotton, 18% rayon, 5% spandex
  • Machine wash cold

MY THOUGHTS: These pants are made of a really soft and stretchy rayon/cotton/spandex blend, and I really like the silhouette. The utility-inspired pocket detail and zippered back pockets add a nice touch without adding bulk.

That said, they’re definitely on the short side; the regular inseam is only 24 1/2″, which is really cropped. With heels, they look a bit like floods, so I tried them with flat sandals to see if that helped… but I’m still not really a fan. I may need the Long length instead (26 1/2″), which would be a more flattering crop on my frame.

VERDICT: I like the style and fabric, so I may try the longer length to see if that works better.

FREJA Hudson Bag Black Lizard

at FREJA (other options on sale at Revolve) // EVEREVE Teddy tee – 40% off (M) // MOTHER Weekender (29) // similar Birks (39)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Meet Hudson, our newest everyday bag and guaranteed new closet staple. Compact and slim yet generously sized for your essentials and more, with an adjustable shoulder strap and finished with silver protective feet at the base. Softly structured and understated, she’s the definition of effortless charm.

  • Magnetic closure
  • Adjustable shoulder strap
  • 1 interior pocket
  • Protective feet on base
  • 10.6” L x 6.7” H x 4″ W
  • Strap width: 0.6″
  • Adjustable strap drop, longest is 16″

MY THOUGHTS: Okay, finally—another bag! FREJA makes really nice quality “vegan leather” bags with clean, modern silhouettes (I have the Caroline in Oat), and I really like the design of this new one. The lizard-embossed texture adds just enough interest to keep a black bag from feeling boring, and the soft microfiber lining is a thoughtful detail that makes it feel more luxe.

VERDICT: This one’s a lot of fun, I think I’ll hold onto it. I can see myself carrying it a lot this fall and winter.

  1. The Citizens of Humanity Brynn shorts have such a wide leg opening. I don’t think they are very flattering. I have more slender legs like you and I think I look better in a short that fits closer to my leg. Maybe my eye just has to get used to the wider leg. I don’t like the wide bermuda shorts either but it seems like there is a style for everyone currently. Happy Belated Birthday!

    1. I agree Elizabeth! I was trying to put my finger on it, but hadn’t considered the leg opening. I also think part of it may be the combo of high waist and longer inseam? Altogether it creates a larger shaped short. They’re cute but I know for me they’d overwhelm my petite frame.

      1. i agree they just make my legs look skinny…not flattering at all
Like I’m wearing someone else’s clothes

    2. Thank you! Yes, they definitely do have a very wide leg opening – it’s “the look” — and one I typically would steer clear of, but I also feel like all of the shorts I have kind of look alike, and I like these for something a little different and more modern. But I also don’t like the rear view very much… and they’re pricey, so I don’t know. I’m probably not going to keep them. I’d like to find a less expensive version. I did just get in a jean skirt with a similar drawstring waist tie, I am excited to try. Maybe that’s a better option.

      1. I am going to have to disagree about the Brynn shorts .., don’t like them with the first top and definitely not with it tucked in all the way. But I like it with the red top. I’m like you I have skinny legs and I usually stray away from wide leg shorts, but those are cute! I also like the Rails shirt, especially with the white shorts. Happy birthday! I hope you had a good one!

  2. Nix the shorts with the drawstring tie. You have other shorts that are more flattering.

  3. Yes yes and yes keep the romper. So cute on you. A great one and done for Summer.
The Evereve drawstring shorts are ok from the front, but not liking the tucked in shirt from the back. But yes the tucked red from the front much better and I’m thinking they may look a bit big on you. Could you try sizing down? You have thin legs so maybe leg is too wide???

  4. I like the shorts better with the Red Nora muscle tee. That looks balanced and elevated especially for jean shorts.

  5. My favorite outfit is the romper. I like the jean shorts with tie from the front but they look too big from the back. I like the red shirt a lot. The mesh tank is a great color on you.

  6. Is the Reiss dress you settled on a UK or a US size 6?
Have a great time celebrating your birthsay this evening with your family!

  7. Jo-Lynne, your try-on hauls are worth waiting for. Thank you for doing them. Does anyone know where Mother Denim gets the names for their denim washes? Healing Jar? LOL! I appreciate the information you include about each item. I was swooning over the 100% cotton Frame eyelet top until I saw “dry clean” 🫤and the price 😂. I adore the Citizen Of Humanity shorts. I understand there may be other shorts that flatter you more, but as a member of the “do not care club”, I’d wear them with a cozy sweatshirt or a cropped, oversized tee and call it good. Lastly, the Vuori jumper looks terrific on you.

    1. Haha, I do love the names MOTHER comes up with. And I’m going to have to start using “a member of the ‘do not care club’”! Like Jen says, there are flattery points and there are style points, and sometimes it’s ok to go for style points. I feel like these are a great example of that.

  8. I love the Reiss dress on you–beautiful!! I clicked on the link so I see price-wise why you might hesitate, but it is your birthday and I find it very flattering on you! If they offered it in petite, I think I’d be getting it for myself for my birthday. 🙂 Happy, happy birthday and have a great evening!

  9. Happy belated birthday twin!! Love the jumper on you! Looks comfy without looking like your in pajamas! I also like the drawstring shorts. Think it’s a fun detail and looks really good with the red muscle tee.

  10. Funny, I shop at KOP too. Just having trouble finding my sizes at most places. I had a long conversation with an associate at Neimans who said they are shipping most sizes out for online orders & don’t have in store stock. Too bad if you need something for that evening or next day! What are you finding?

  11. I always look forward to your try on hauls and what I wore lately posts. Thank you. Happy belated Birthday!

  12. Happy Birthday! Hope you’re having a great birthday celebration! Lots of cute stuff! I love the WHBM outfit, and I see what you mean about the pants being really short but they actually are very flattering, although a longer inseam might be more versatile.
The Mother Hustlers are a very nice wash, I’m trying to tell myself I don’t need them. 🙂

  13. My favorites are the jean jacket, the romper, and the print WHBM top.
The dress is also pretty on you.
Hope you had a wonderful birthday!

  14. Am I the only one who just doesn’t like drawstrings? On pretty much anything? I don’t like tying or untying them, after washing they get crumpled and messy, often the tied string makes a bulge under shirts or even sweatshirts if they hang over the waistband when I want a flat front, they really aren’t needed to keep my shorts, pants or joggers up……..they are my fashion pet peeve!

    1. LOL! I would normally agree, but I’m loving these on the denim skirts and shorts. I feel like it’s a fun detail that freshens up the look. But I would definitely always tuck a top with them.
