A Modern Sweater Twin Set Outfit

Welcome back to 23 Days of Spring Fashion! Today I’m styling a spring work wear look with the 2021 version of a sweater twin set.

A Modern Sweater Twin Set Outfit wearing: BR sweater shirt jacket // BR square-neck sweater tank // Spanx skinny pants (also at Nordstrom) // Sam Edelman pumps // Kendra Scott earrings and necklace // Michael Kors crossbody

When I think of a sweater twin set, I think of the 1950’s version — a short sleeve crewneck sweater with matching button-up cardigan, usually with a triple string of pearls at the neck.

This updated sweater twin set outfit borrows from one of the biggest 2021 fashion trends — the shacket — for a more modern take on the classic pairing.

A Modern Sweater Twin Set with a Sweater Shirt Jacket

This sweater shirt jacket is from Banana Republic, and it’s a great way to participate in the “shacket” trend in a more sophisticated way.

The fabric is 100% merino wool, which gives it some structure and also a nice drape. It has a relaxed fit with a subtle curved hemline, and it runs true to size; I’m in the small.

Underneath, I’m wearing a square-neck sweater tank in a similar shade of grey. It also comes in olive and black, and it’s made of that same LENZING™ ECOVERO™ that we talked about yesterday — a more sustainable form of viscose. It’s very soft and comfortable, and it runs true to size.

Both the sweater tank and shirt jacket will add value and versatility to my spring and summer wardrobe because not only do they pair nicely for a modern sweater twin set, both can be mixed and matched with other pieces in my closet.

The shirt jacket is a great way to elevate a simple white t-shirt and jeans, perhaps with loafer mules or even sneakers. And this sweater tank can layer under a moto jacket or denim jacket, or even my new bomber jacket with other jeans and pants in my closet.

Spring Work Wear for Women Over 40: A Modern Sweater Twin Set Outfit

Once again, I’m wearing my black Spanx perfect back seam skinny pants. They hold everything in, just as you would expect from Spanx, and they’re a pull-on style with a high rise and a flat waistband so there’s no muffin top.

They come in regular, petite, plus, and petite plus sizes at Nordstrom, and you can also find them in tall sizes on the Spanx website. They also come in navy blue.

These pants run true to size, according to the size charts; I have the M=6-8.

I carried a black camera bag style crossbody, and I wore a delicate layered necklace and gold hoop earrings that incorporate the industrial hardware trend.

A bolder chain necklace set might look better with this look, but I grabbed this one out of habit. It’s lightweight and easy to wear, and I always feel like it’s eye-catching without being overwhelming.

For footwear, I just wore classic black leather pumps, but I also really like loafer mules with this outfit. I tried it both ways, but I went with pumps since I wore loafer mules with these same pants and the turtleneck sweater tee last week.

I also think these square toe ankle strap flats would be nice with this look, and they would be more modern. All of these options work, it just depends on the culture of your work environment and how dressed-up you want to be.

  1. Like you I’m not typically a fan of shirts or jackets with pockets that accentuate my “assets”. Do you feel differently with this sweater? It looks lovely on you!

  2. Could you tell me what size you are wearing in the Sweater Tank? I was thinking it may run large.

  3. I love this updated version of the twin set. Super cute, and it looks comfy too. I’m all about that. XO

  4. That’s a shacket I might be able to get behind. I think the pumps were the right way to go, loafers and flats would be too dressed down since the shacket is already your casual piece.
    Pants are awesome as always!

  5. What a nice outfit that you look great in! I hope that the photo session went very smoothly and that you weren’t too cold. Enjoy the rest of your day!

  6. I really love this outfit! You look so slim these days! Just wondering with the new changes on your website is there still an option to request when an item you feature goes on sale? I believe it was under “Shopbop”?
