How to Style A Sweatshirt Dress Outfit

Happy Tuesday, friends! It’s Day 8 of 23 Days of Spring Fashion, and I’m styling a casual sweatshirt dress outfit for spring.

wearing: sweatshirt dress (size S) // Frye sneakers (30% off at Bloomies/Shopbop/Nordstrom/Zappos) // denim jacket (size S; 40% off) // teardrop earrings // link bracelet (option) // crossbody // sunnies

This casual sweatshirt dress is a steal for less than $25. It’s such a great little number for throwing on with sneakers or sandals on a mild spring day, and the tie dye pattern is right on trend.

Not only is this dress made of a soft sweatshirt material, but it has the rib-knit crew neck with v-shaped notch and the rib-knit hem to give it the sweatshirt styling details as well.

As you can see, the sleeves are full-length with a bit of a drop shoulder, and it has a straight, relaxed fit through the body. It’s available in XS — XXL, and it runs true to size. They also have petite and tall sizes.

I styled this sweatshirt dress outfit with white leather sneakers. Clean white sneakers keep this look in style without being super trendy. A chunkier “dad sneaker” or retro runner would look newer and more fashion-forward, but the clean classic look aligns more with my personal style.

These Frye sneakers are made of premium Italian leather, and they have a padded collar and tongue as well as a molded leather footbed with good arch support.

They’re leather lined as well, so they feel amazingly soft and comfortable against the skin, and they’re currently 30% off at Zappos, Shopbop, Nordstrom, and Bloomies.

I mentioned this leather crossbody in a post last week, but we didn’t have a good picture of it. It’s a great size for the minimalists among us who like to be hands-free. It is expandable when you unzip the bottom, making it a great bag for packing in a suitcase. This bag will definitely be coming to Florida with me!

To make this sweatshirt dress outfit look a little more styled, I pushed up the sleeves.

Granted, if it’s a chilly day, I would want the extra warmth the long sleeves have to offer, and I appreciate that Old Navy wasn’t stingy with the sleeve length on this dress. But if it’s warm enough, pushing up your sleeves will look more interesting and intentional.

It’s also more flattering because it exposes a bit of the forearm and wrist, which are generally the smaller and more feminine part of a woman’s arm, and I like the way it shows my bracelets.

Finally, I tied my denim jacket around my waist to give this casual sweatshirt dress outfit the ultimate cool-girl vibe.

I was laughing with Alison because I always feel ridiculous doing this, and I feel like it emphasizes my broad hips. But I have to admit, it does look more chic than holding it over my arm, which is what I typically do when not wearing it.

And if you’re wondering why I didn’t show the jacket on my person? Well, it doesn’t fit very well over this dress. It works, but it’s not very comfortable. I would need a more oversized style, which is trending right now, but I don’t currently have one. Adding that to my spring shopping list!

I do like this denim jacket, though. It’s very flattering when you want a more fitted style, and it’s also 40% off at Nordstrom right now.

  1. Super cute and fresh. Good too see you out of your comfort zone (no jeans). I’m glad it comes in petite and works well with sneakers.

  2. You look great in this awesome dress! The price is definitely a good one. I can see that dress making the trip to FL. The area where y’all took these pictures looks so nice! Yes, we are also having spring like weather, but the yellow pollen is not conducive to sitting outside. Have a great day!

  3. Oh it’s super cute, Jo-Lynne!!! I love it…but I’m like you and rarely wear a dress. You are tempting me though!!! XOXO

  4. Nice to see a change in style and price point! I have that dress in black, and love it. I wear it with tights and flats in winter. I see that Old Navy offers it in several color choices. I may need to get another!

  5. It looks good on you….but no for me. Not my personal asthetic (which I clearly don’t know how to spell), I stick to more fitted styles and certainly don’t need more volume anywhere near my hips.
Cute dress, I like the price!

  6. So cute on you. I love all you styled it with. Now be sure you wear it. :). You look so cute. Being almost 60 I’d feel like I was trying to look too young with the tie dye and sneaker look. How is your family doing? I miss hearing about them.

  7. Do you remember what brand/color lipstick you are wearing in these pics? It looks especially nice with the shade of pink in the dress. LOVE this look on you; I’m going to give it a spin myself.

  8. I have the Frye sneakers in black as well as in white. I’m actually on my second pair of black as I wore the first pair so often that they started to look ratty. They have a reasonable about of padding in them and arch support. I recommend them!
