Are Denim Jackets Still In Style in 2025?

There’s been a lot of chatter lately about whether denim jackets are still in style. While the traditional fitted trucker is starting to feel a little tired, there’s no denying that a denim jacket is a wardrobe workhorse, so finding the right update can feel daunting. Since moving my old denim jackets out of my closet last year, I’ve often found myself missing that perfect casual topper.

The good news is, denim jackets are still very much on trend. In fact, denim is everywhere right now, in all wardrobe categories. The key is finding a style that feels fresh and modern. I recently discovered two great options that I’ve added to my closet, and I’m sharing how I styled them, plus a roundup of even more on-trend denim jackets at the end of this post!

How to Update Your Denim Jacket for Fall 2025

The first jacket is one I found at EVEREVE, and it’s by one of my favorite clothing labels they carry—cloth & stone. It doesn’t have that traditional fitted trucker look that’s starting to feel a little tired, but it still has the same flattering, easy-to-style shape. The zipper front gives it a modern twist without losing the classic silhouette.

The best part about this jacket is, the fabric is actually chambray, so it’s super soft and drapes beautifully, especially in the back. I also love the deep shade of blue. It’s polished, versatile, and so easy to style.

I styled it here over a white v-neck tee and paired them with olive wide-leg crop pants that are perfect for the transition season ahead. I went with brown ballet flats and a brown belt to warm up the look, and then I added some jewelry—gold tone double hoop earrings, a beaded pendant necklace and my favorite brown tortoiseshell sunnies.

The other denim jacket I found is a nod to the lady jacket, done in a versatile medium wash. I’m wearing the medium here, but it’s a bit roomy. Since taking these photos, I’ve ordered the small, and it’s a much better fit. It has a scooped ballet neckline and a boxy, cropped silhouette, with chest pockets, contrasting stitching, and tortoiseshell buttons for added interest. The fabric is super soft and comfortable, making it an easy all-day layer.

I styled this one with the same olive pants, but for a different vibe, I swapped in a brown ribbed tank and chocolate brown Mary Janes with a modern cutout design.

I’m not usually a Mary Jane fan, but something about these really grabbed me. To tie the look together, I swapped in a darker brown belt to coordinate with my shoes and tank, and I carried my Clare V. woven crossbody (sadly sold out, but this one by Quince is a great alternative.)

I should probably also speak to these under-$100 pants… They’re such a nice alternative to jeans for casual outfits. The front patch pockets and trouser-style hem give them a finished look, which ties in perfectly with the denim trends this fall. (You can read more about those trends in my 2025 Denim Trends Report.)

Both of these jackets are proof that denim jackets are far from “out”. They just needed a little refresh. I love how both of these work with my olive pants, but they’d pair just as easily with jeans, skirts, or casual dresses for fall.

  1. I LOVE those chocolate brown mary janes! Out in my size, but keeping an eye on them! Great easy suggestions for updates!

  2. I ordered the denim from Evereve. I gave you credit. Wow! That’s a good look. I needed something newer. Thanks! I hope it fits. Kut from the Cloth is to big on this petite frame. Again thank you!

  3. I just ordered a trucker style denim jacket, which looks to me to just be a longer length. I saw one on the Abercrombie website but didn’t really want to pay the price so I ordered one from Old Navy.
I may not be the only one out there when I say this, but from time to time in the fall, I still find myself throwing on a white tea and a pair of black leggings and a cute little sneaker just to run a quick errand but often times the denim jackets that I have are too short and don’t cover the bottom area.
Is this something that I shouldn’t be considering? Am I dating myself?
I do have the other style denim jackets like you have shown today but just never had one long enough in case I wanted to throw it over a pair of leggings!
    Your thoughts?

    1. I would actually include the longer style denim jackets as an updated look to the shorter fitted styles. I’m not one to wear leggings out and about, but if I did, I would definitely put a longer denim jacket with them.

    2. Hi Karen- Just chiming in- I often throw on black leggings with a white tee and sneakers to run errands as well. I have a great chambray button up shirt that I wear as a topper & it covers the bum and completes the “outfit” so I don’t feel schlumpy 😊 The one I have and love is from Faherty.

  4. Great update! Curious… are you still wearing your AG denim jacket from Evereve from sometime last year? It was longer and more shirt style. I bought that one and love how it fits and feels.

  5. Can we talk about the belts? You style the olive pants with a lighter belt (presumably to lighten up with the white T) that is wider than the belt in the second outfit with the darker top. Why did you choose those different width belts? Trying to figure out the wide vs skinny belt situation. I suppose a skinnier belt is dressier? Trying to figure out the belt “formula”. Thanks.

    1. I was choosing for color more than for width. Wider belts tend to look more casual and skinnier belts more dressy, but that’s a broad generalization. It also depends on the hardware and the material/finish. Both of these are on the dressier side due the hardware and the croc finish but it’s what I had on hand, and I liked the colors with the outfits.

  6. I think I will order one size down in the Kit From The Kloth jacket to compare the fit. Hopefully, I have left the tags on the one in my wardrobe in case I do need to size down.

  7. I love your first outfit with the Cloth & Stone jacket; super cute! Paige has a new collarless denim jacket that is on my wish list. Those Mary Janes look good on you- love the color- might have to try those too!

  8. The zip up cloth & stone jean jacket is very cute and tempting. The collar design on the second one–would drive me nuts. I just can’t handle that style collar top–that oval design. I do need a new leather belt and am looking at that. I prefer silver hardware and see there’s dark brown one with silver. I read somewhere that if you are short–you are are suppose to wear skinny belts or the other ones will cut you in half too much and make you look shorter. But I prefer regular width–especially in fall/winter! Still too warm in the midwest for a jean jacket–but maybe in the evening–soon!

  9. I just purchased the olive pants in 2 different sizes. Wondering if they stretch out before I decide which one to keep. Also, should they hit right at the ankle?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi, Wendy. They are cropped, so they are supposed to be an inch or so above the ankle, but they can be ankle length, that is more how they fit me. They do stretch a bit. Definitely wear them around the house with the tags on for an hour or so and see how they wear before ripping any tags off. 🙂
