Fashion Over 40: How to Style the Biggest Fall Fashion Trends

** This post is sponsored by Nordstrom and Collective Voice. All selections, styling, and opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that support this site!

We’ve been talking a lot about fall fashion trends this month, and today I’m teaming up with Nordstrom to style two transitional looks with some of my favorite trends of the season. These are all classic styles that are having a moment right now, and I’m looking forward to mixing and matching them in different ways with other items in my closet this fall.

Sanctuary Stripe Sleeveless Cotton Sweater (S) // Pistola Alice Denim Maxi Skirt (29) // Sam Edelman Cohen Pointed Toe Flat (8) // Nordstrom Classic Hinge Cuff Bracelet // similar hoops // Madewell necklace set // YSL sunglasses (similar for less)

I’ve always been a fan of a sleeveless sweater, so I’m happy to see sweater vests still widely available this season. It’s the perfect way to start to transition your summer wardrobe while it’s still warm in most areas of the country.

This Sanctuary version also incorporates another big trend of the season, stripes. It’s a nice quality 100% cotton, and I like the 21″ length for pairing with higher rises. Unfortunately, it’s selling out, so I rounded up some other options for you below.

For my first look, I paired this stripe sweater vest with a long denim skirt and red pointy toe slingback flats for a very of-the moment dressy-casual look that can take you so many places.

This Pistola Alice Denim Maxi Skirt has a long, lean silhouette with a high front slit and raw hem. I like the subtle acid wash effect, and it’s made of a rigid 100% cotton denim for a vintage-inspired look and feel.

For size reference, I’m wearing the 29, and it’s quite snug in the waist, so it either runs small, or my stress eating is catching up with me, but I’d be more comfortable in the size 30. All that to say, you may want to size up, if in between.

And these are the Sam Edelman Cohen Pointed Toe Flats. They come in tons of colors, but I love this shade of red. I’m also jonesing for that leopard print pair.

These shoes have a padded footbed, they’re very comfortable and easy to walk in, and they run true to size. They’re a great way to update your fall wardrobe in a way that’s classic and elegant and also highly versatile.

I carried a black bag with gold hardware, to tie in with the black stripes in the sweater and the gold hardware on the shoes, and I added a gold tone cuff bracelet for more shine. The Coach bag I’m carrying here has sold out, there are a lot of other nice Coach styles on the Nordstrom website.

Whatever you call them, they are super flattering, and comfortable too. AND they just went on a Limited Time Sale for 25% off! I noticed the popular sizes are showing “only a few left” so if you want to snag these jeans on sale, don’t wait around for long. If in doubt on sizing, I recommend ordering both and returning the one that doesn’t work, but they run true to size for me.

Nordstrom also carries several simliar styles for less that I’ve vetted and are quite good, like this Wit & Wisdom pair and this Hint Of Blu pair.

I wore the same jewelry for both looks — this Madewell pendant and chain necklace set, the gold tone hinge cuff I mentioned above, and a simple pair of hoop earrings. Larger statement pieces are trending this season, but I’m not there yet. I feel like these pieces bridge the gap and still look fairly current.

And I swapped the red flats for these kitten heel slingback pumps in a similar shade of scarlet red. They have a glossy sheen to the leather that’s almost like patent, but not quite as dressy. They’re very chic and easy to pair with so many bottoms, from denim to dresses.

Fit tip: These shoes run slightly small for Sam Edelman, where I’m almost always an 8. I could really use the 8 1/2 in these, so keep that in mind if ordering.

As always, when you shop at Nordstrom, you get their free shipping and free returns. And don’t forget about their BOPUS (Buy Online Pick Up in Store) and contactless curbside pickup options.

  1. Hi, Jolynne: You look effortlessly stylish in your outfits (as usual)! Since you briefly mentioned patent leather, it seems it’s everywhere, especially on the trendy Mary Jane, kitten heel, and ballet shoe styles.
Since many remind me of little girl shoes, how could we style these patent leather shoes in a “grown-up” way?

    1. I have a similar question. I bought a pair of black patent slingback loafers and missed the return period. Are they in style and can they be worn by more mature women? Thanks!

    2. I think any time you style them with more casual pieces, like I did here, it looks more modern and “grown-up”. I don’t mind them with dressier pieces, but if looking too junior is a concern, I would recommend going for that juxtaposition by wearing them with denim.

  2. I found a stripped vest at TJ MAX last week for $25. I think it will be great to wear when the cool fall days arrive. I also have my eye on a couple in Amazon. Sorry but I’m not one to spend nearly $300 on a vest when next year they may be out of style.
I have been seeing the long denim skirts in the stores but at 5’5”I think I would not look good in one of these so will pass on that purchase.

  3. Like you, I have to keep reminding myself that this is a holiday weekend. Us retirees have to use a paper calendar to keep up with the day of the week and the holidays. I also enjoy wearing sweater vests during these fickle months, but I do look for some that are reasonably priced since they might not be popular next year and/or I may tire of them quickly. Hopefully, I can find a pair of the in style flats with good arch support that are within my budget. Since Larry has just told me that he likes denim skirts on ladies, I will order one to give it a try.

  4. I love both looks, so chic! I really like sweater vests and will be adding some to my wardrobe. I’ve put the kitten heels and jeans in my cart. Thank you for another great blog post.

  5. Now I love this red flats! ❤️ They looks so good with skirt and jeans. I saw on one of your instagram pics where you wore a blue cotton button up with jeans. Did I miss where you styled it on your bog? I really like the look. Hope you have a great holiday weekend!

  6. Hi JoLynne – I know this is Nordstrom sponsored post, but I have a question about an Evereve item I think you styled a few weeks back: the “Lara Twist Muscle Tee” in a burgundy color. It is on sale for a great price and I’m thinking about getting it for my Europe trip in October. I think I can wear it multiple ways (jeans, trousers, skirt) which is how I’m planning my outfits. How does it run? TTS? And how is the neckline? On the model the crewneck looks very high. I can’t find your post where you are wearing it. Thanks!
