How to Prepare for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale #NSale

So there’s this little event coming up next week called the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. You may have heard of it?  😂

Right now half of you are clapping your hands together in glee while the other half are swearing off all blogs and social media until August 6th, when the earth is once again centered on its axis.

I understand, I really do.

Yes, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is probably over-hyped, and yes, the blogosphere will be saturated with the #NSale hashtag over the next few weeks. BUT. I’ve been told countless times how much people enjoy my coverage, and my stats don’t lie — many of you guys love it as much as I do — so I’ll definitely be covering it (and shopping it, duh!) again this year.

The fact of the matter is, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is simply THE best time to stock up on cold weather basics and new fall trends. So as your self-proclaimed girlfriend who keeps you in the know about all things fashion, it would be wrong of me to ignore such an epic sale.

I was going to wait until Monday to publish this post, so I’m not diving into #NSale coverage during July 4th weekend. But then I thought those who need some time to take inventory of their fall clothes and make a plan might prefer to have this information for the weekend, so here we are!

If you’re on my NSale Insiders email list, you have already received this information, so feel free to skim over it or ignore, if you think you’re all set. But I hope it’s helpful as we gear up for the Super Bowl of shopping events!

What is the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale?

First of all, this is NOT a summer clearance sale. This is brand new fall 2019 merchandise, brought out specifically for this sale, and immediately reduced. Savings are often 30-40% off retail, which is pretty amazing.

This is the perfect time to stock up on quality basics and splurge items you may not find at a discount except at end of season when sizes are picked over.

My priorities go like this: shoes, denim, sweaters… in that order. After that, I may look at coats, dresses, jewelry, sleepwear, lingerie, and beauty. Oh, and it’s also a good time to pick up a quality handbag on sale!

Here’s how it works:

Anniversary Sale styles will be categorized on the website, displaying both the discounted price as well as how much it will cost full-price after the sale.

If you visit Nordstrom in-person, Anniversary Sale items are separated from the other merchandise by curtained sections.

The dates for the 2019 #NSale are July 19 — August 4, 2019, but Early Access for Nordstrom cardholders is July 12 — July 18, 2019.

  • July 9 – Nordy Club members with Icon status can pre-shop the sale in-store only
  • July 10-11 – Nordy Club members with Icon or Ambassador status can pre-shop the sale in-store only
  • July 12 – Early Access Begins for all Cardholder levels, in-store and online at 12:30 PM EST
  • July 18 – Last Day of Early Access
  • July 19 – Anniversary Sale opens to the Public, in-store and online at 12:30 PM EST
  • August 4 – Last Day of the Anniversary Sale

If you’re familiar with how this sale has run in past years, you may notice a few things being done differently this year.

What’s New This Year

First of all, there are THREE pre-shop days!

If you have Ambassador or Icon status, you get to shop in-store before the sale opens online to other card holders. (You can find your status by going to your Nordstrom card account, and on the summary page, it lists your status in the top right-hand corner under the caption The Nordy Club Benefits.)

The other thing that is new this year is Early Access starts at 12:30 PM EST on July 12th both online and in store.

In past years, it would open online at 3AM EST and not in store until 10AM, and by then, things were already selling out, and the website was crashing. They are hoping that by opening the sale at the same time online and in-store, it will cut down on website traffic and things won’t go haywire this time.

I am still going to recommend you shop online for the best selection and to avoid losing out on pieces that sell out quickly. But hopefully their new this strategy works, and the website will be able to sustain the impact of all the #NSale hype this time around.

How My Coverage Works

Since I have Icon status, I get to pre-shop the sale on July 9th, so I can bring it all to you when Early Access begins on July 12th!

I’ll be sharing what I find on my Insta Story while I’m in the store on the 9th, and I’ll post my Guide to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale to the blog as soon as the sale goes live on July 12th with a roundup of all my top picks. And you better be ready because let me tell you, things sell out FAST.

I still have people telling me they wish they had snagged certain items that I promoted during the #NSale last summer and continued to wear throughout last fall and winter, but it sold out before they made up their minds, so it really does pay to shop early.

A Disclaimer

That said, I urge you to keep things in their proper perspective. They’re just clothes, and there are always more, and there are always sales if you’re patient and know where to look. So yeah, have fun, but don’t get stressed out over a sale!

Plus, returns are free and easy, so you can always change your mind.

How to Make the Most of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

There are a few things you can do in advance to prepare for the sale.

#1. Sign up for The Nordy Club. I highly recommend the credit card as well, if you aren’t opposed to having another card, because the credit card is your ticket to Early Access.

If you shop often at Nordstrom, it is well worth having. In fact, I use my Nordstrom Visa for all of my personal shopping. It keeps it all in one place, and I earn points faster that way.

Here’s the breakdown: Nordy Club members earn 1 point for every dollar spent at Nordstrom, and Nordstrom cardholders earn 3 points for every dollar spent.

For every 2,000 points you accumulate, you get a $20 Nordstrom Note to spend at their stores.

As an added incentive, right now they are giving away a $60 Bonus Note to anyone who signs up for their credit card. That’s $60 in your pocket to spend during the #NSale!!!

#2. Mark your calendar, and prepare to shop early.

If you have a Nordstrom credit card, put July 12th on your calendar, because that is the first day of Early Access.

If you prefer not to have early access, put July 19th on your calendar. They do restock some things that sell out during Early Access, so all hope is not lost. (But there are no guarantees.)

Either way you choose to shop, you will have the best selection on the first day.

#3. Subscribe to my #NSale Insiders email list. This is separate from my regular daily emails, but sign up for those too if you haven’t already!

And keep an eye on my blog because I’ll be putting together a Guide to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale very similar to the one I did last year that I hope will help you navigate the sale once it’s online.

I’m already familiar with their brands and pricing structure, so I can let you know what the truly good deals are and what not to miss out on.

#4. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram.

I often post sale alerts and deals I find on my Facebook page before I can compile them into a blog post. Also, I will be posting live to my Insta Story from the Pre-Shop day on July 9th! That is the only place I will be doing live updates.

I still plan to take dressing room pictures to share before Early Access starts on July 12th, but those will take some time to edit and compile into a post or email, so my Insta Story is the best way to get in on the live action.

I realize not everyone is on those social media platforms, but I cannot ignore them, as they are powerful tools that allow me to interact with you and get information to you faster than compiling it into emails and blog posts.

That said, there will be plenty of #NSale coverage on the blog and in my emails. This is another reason I started the #NSale Insiders email list — it will allow me to blast out information more regularly than I feel comfortable doing with my regular daily emails. If you aren’t signed up, you can do that HERE.

#5. Make a shopping list, and have a plan to shop the most popular items first.

This is the time to go through your fall/winter wardrobe — and summer too, because there are always some great wear now-and-later pieces that are part of the sale — and make a list of things you need or want to add to your closet.

Then go through the catalog, and keep an eye on my pre-sale coverage, and make a list of the things you want to be sure to snag first. Remember, there is always a lot more available when the sale opens than what is in the catalog, but it is a good overview of what is likely to be most popular.

Some of the things that always go fast are shoes and boots (all brands, but especially the big names like Sam Edelman, Jeffrey Campbell, Vince Camuto, Stuart Weitzman, Rag & Bone, etc.), premium denim (there are always a few pairs of AG jeans in the sale that go like hotcakes), Barefoot Dreams cardigans (yes, there’s one in there this year!), Tory Burch bags, and cashmere sweaters.

#6. Shop early.

I can’t say this enough. Put it on your calendar, and be ready to click as soon as the sale goes live. I will do my best to get my coverage up as soon as possible. but it will take me a while to get those shopping widgets together because I can’t do that until the sale is live online at 12:30PM EST on July 12th.

And can I just say how HAPPY I am that I won’t have to set my alarm for 2:30AM and do that in the middle of the night!?!

I’m so glad Nordstrom is doing things a little differently this year.

#7. Schedule a Personal Double Points Day during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

Then be sure to make your biggest purchases that day to maximize your rewards points earning potential!

#8. Shop online and choose the Store Pickup option.

This is the best way to avoid the chaos and crowds AND get the things you want immediately.

#8. Buy 2 sizes.

If ever in doubt, buy two sizes and return the one that doesn’t work for you. I promise you, you will thank me later for this advice.

The hottest items will sell out within the first few days, and if you wait to get your order, find out you need a different size, and go to re-order, it may not be available.

Returns are free and easy.

#9. Watch for my emails.

As an #NSale Insider, you will be the first to get notified about my Guide to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale when it goes live on the blog.

I’m already familiar with their brands and pricing structure, so I can let you know what the truly good deals are and what not to miss out on.

This year there are THREE pre-shop days for Icon status card holders (that’s me! shopaholic much?) and I will make the most of those three days so I can be well prepared to help you shop the sale stress-free.

I make it a goal to share the best deals from the sale and report back on quality and fit, and YOU can avoid the madness and shop from your living room couch as soon as the sale opens.

Full disclosure: I do make a commission on purchases you make through my site, emails, or social media channels; but it doesn’t cost you an extra penny. Just consider me your virtual stylist.

Stick with me, kid! I’ve gotcha covered!

Stay tuned for my NSale Preview post, coming to the blog on Monday! And if you want a sneak peek before that, make sure you’re signed up for my NSale Insiders email list, as I’ll be sending out a little preview of the preview (haha!) later today.
