I’ve had a lot of requests for holiday outfit ideas recently, so now that the stores have released their holiday attire, I thought I’ld share some of my favorite pieces to inspire your outfit planning.
Whether you’re going to an office party, heading to a neighbor’s house, meeting up with your girlfriends, or spending time with family, I’ve linked a bunch of items that will work for a variety of events this holiday season.
Also, I wanted to give you a heads-up that Nordstrom is now doing an additional 25% off select sale styles, in addition to their 3X Points for Nordy Club members! The 3X points is running through Sunday, 11/13, and the additional 25% off goes through Monday, 11/14. Shop all my top picks in THIS POST!
Okay, on to holiday style… I know you all prefer when I actually wear the clothes, but for today’s post, I put together a few collage images so I could show more options. I did order some of these for upcoming try-on hauls and potential photo shoots, so stay tuned!
What Colors to Wear for the Holidays

Plum & Burgundy
When browsing the latest arrivals from places like Nordstrom, Loft, and Evereve, I noticed a lot of plum and burgundy, but they aren’t necessarily wearing it with black or grey, which is what I tend to do. This year, we’re seeing a lot of monochromatic looks with other shades in the same color family. I love this fresh take on holiday style!
My Favorite Plum & Burgundy Finds:
Sequins
When you’re wanting to look extra glam, sequins are the way to go, and they are everywhere this season. From New Year’s Eve parties to winter concerts, you may be surprised by how many occasions you can find to wear sequins.
My Favorite Sequin Finds:
- Halter Neck Sequin Top
- Sequin Sheath Cocktail Dress
- Sequin Wrap Top
- Sequin Tee (tried it, love it!)
- Sequin Shell Top (on sale! I just ordered this…)
- Sequin Scoop Back Top (perfect for ladies who like arm coverage)
Metallics
If you prefer a more understated but elegant look and tend to feel like a disco ball when you wear sequins, try wearing metallics. You can often get more wear out of these throughout the year than other traditional holiday pieces. Metallic shoes, in particular, are appropriate all year ’round.
My Favorite Metallic Finds:
- Long Sleeve V-Neck Blouse (I’ve tried this; it is very pretty on and easy to wear!)
- Square-Toe Sandal (on sale!)
- Shine Tank
- Gold Ankle Strap Sandal (I have these as well; very comfortable and classy!)
- One Shoulder Dress

Plaid and Tartan
When you think of the holidays, many automatically think of plaid/tartan, and I think the brand that does it best is J.Crew. They’re currently doing 40% off for Friends & Family, so be sure you’re a J.Crew Passport member; it’s free to join.)
Since you’ll typically only be wearing this for a month or two, I would recommend more budget-friendly plaid pieces that won’t break the bank. J.Crew Factory is great for that, and they currently have everything marked 50% off!
My Favorite Plaid Finds:
Traditional Green or Red
If you aren’t afraid of color, go bold and bright in red or green. There are ways to do this without looking like a Christmas tree. Look for darker versions of the color and updated silhouettes like the ones I’ve linked below. Also, avoid pairing red with black. It almost always looks dated and a little frumpy. Instead, try winter white or grey or even a dark wash denim can work for more casual events.
My Favorite Green and/or Red Finds:
Other Holiday Party Finds
- This vegan leather moto jacket from Evereve can be worn both now and later. It includes a removable faux fur vest that can be worn on the inside or outside of the jacket or on its own.
- Already have a top but need a pair of pants? This coated pair will level up any cozy sweater, and they’re also the perfect complement to more formal fabrications like sequins and velvet.
- If you don’t like to dress up and prefer to be comfy and cozy, add this funnel pullover to your cart.
- Ann Taylor is doing 50% off one piece and 40% off the rest of your order, and they have tons of gorgeous holiday pieces you can mix and match with what you have in your closet, like this rose gold sequin top, this gorgeous red tie neck blouse, and this grey velvet wrap top. And how lovely is this shimmer pleated midi skirt?

We did not have much damage on the treasure coast – just lots of rain and wind- so thankful. I love all your posts but especially this holiday post with some great choices. I will be shopping with you today. Thank you
So glad your damage was minimal. Happy shopping!
What a good post! No, I am not ready for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Up until last Saturday it was just going to be the two of us, so we had plans to keep the meal simple, especially since I’m having shoulder surgery on the 18th and will be in a sling. Now that my stepson will be here for both meals, and our granddaughter will visit at some point, more planning needs to be done. My stepson does not like turkey, but he’s good with our plan to have smoked turkey legs. I want to keep things simple for Larry since his chemo regimen impacts his strength and ability to do things. The sling I end up in will definitely impact my attire.
My goodness, Ginger, that is a lot on your plate! Hopefully your stepson is easy going and helpful. Take care of yourself. There’s always takeout! 🙂
Please give suggestions for man in early 80s who is hard to buy for.
That’s a challenge, sure! How about an experience of some sort?
I bought the GAP gable knit crewneck sweater in green last year and it’s still in nice shape. Recommend it.
Good to know!
I just ordered the red plaid skirt and the red plaid sleeveless top from JCrew Factory (not to wear together!) But I think the top would be cute with my black lacy mini skirt and black kitten heels, and the red plaid skirt I could wear with the black velvet blazer I just ordered from Evereve and a black satin cami underneath. I used to love wearing a blingy top with jeans for casual holiday parties but now with the current denim styles I feel my jeans are either “too much” or “too casual” ….I can’t seem to find an in-between denim style for me. And I love my long flared boot cut jeans but they’re not the right style to pair with a sequin top. Does that make sense? What are you wearing with blingy tops? (I know you love your jeans, but what styles and what shoes?)
Hm. I need to play around with mine I guess. I was thinking maybe the coated denim boot it’s or the black frame le high flares. Even the fidelity Cher for a more relaxed vibe.
Love the fuschia sweater (1) and the (4) low heels. Those slacks (number 8), though, reminded me of maroon cords I remember wearing like around 1982 (good they’re *not* the same, lol).
Hi jo-Lynne,
What size worked for you in the black Sanctuary sequin tee? I track very close to your sizes.
Thank you!
I tried the S and the M and they both fit but it’s short so I think the M is better.
Hi Jo-Lynne,
What size of the Sanctuary sequin tee worked best for you? A small or medium? I generally take the same size as you do. Thank you!
It’s pretty short, so I would need the medium for that reason alone. The small was okay but overall a little snug.
Thank you very much!
