The cropped button-up shirt is the spring trend I didn’t know I needed! It’s classic, but with a modern, effortless edge—perfect for pairing with high-waisted jeans, skirts, or even layered over a dress or swimsuit. If you’ve ever avoided button-ups because the traditional or oversized styles feel like too much fabric, this might be the perfect solution. Also, cropped doesn’t have to mean tummy-baring—the ones I’m styling and linking all hit right at or just below the waistband of mid- and high-rise bottoms.
I’ve been testing out different ways to wear mine, and today I’m sharing one of my favorite spring outfits, plus a few other looks to show just how versatile this trend can be. And if you’re looking to add one to your closet, I’ve rounded up some of the best cropped button-up shirts to shop right now!

The Aiden Crop Shirting from Evereve is the perfect way to try this trend without stepping too far out of your comfort zone. Made from soft 100% cotton woven fabric, this striped button-up has a relaxed-yet-polished feel, and the cropped silhouette with a subtle shirttail hemline gives it a fresh, modern touch.

I especially love that the long sleeves have button tabs, so they can be rolled and secured for an effortless 3/4-length cuff. It comes in both blue and tan, and I actually have both sitting in my room right now. I wore the blue one in Florida, but I love the tan so much that I might just keep them both.

While in Florida last month, I wore this outfit to lunch with friends in St. Armands Circle on a beautiful, sunny day—that’s where we took these pictures. I styled the blue-and-white striped cropped button-up with white denim for a clean, fresh spring look. And I threw a textured chartreuse cardigan over my shoulders for added interest and an unexpected pop of color.

To complement the outfit, I went with brown slide sandals and a rattan bag for warmth and a natural element. Then, I added a bold mixed-metal pendant necklace to fill out the neckline, along with double hoop earrings and a pair of oversized sunglasses to complete the look. I could have added a bracelet, but I felt like my mixed metal wristwatch was enough.

A few days later, Paul and I went out to dinner in downtown Sarasota, and I paired the same striped cropped button-up with mid-wash wide-leg crop jeans. Typically, I like to wear something more fitted on top when I have this much volume on the bottom, but because the shirt is short enough to show the curve of my hips, I feel like it works. Plus, the combination of a shorter top with cropped bottoms helps keep the look balanced.

The next day, we were moving to a different hotel, and I wanted to wear something that resembled real clothing for the Uber ride and check-in at our next resort. But I also wanted to have my swimsuit on so I could head straight to the pool while they held our bags until our room was ready.
Since my swimsuit was blue, I threw the same cropped button-up over top, added white shorts and metallic flip-flops, and voilà!—a perfectly appropriate outfit that worked for both occasions. Plus, I discovered a new outfit combination for this shirt in the process—in fact, I liked it so much, I wore it again later in the trip.

Back at home, the tan version of this shirt was hanging on my rolling rack. I actually have this one in a size medium, and I think I like it a bit better. The small fits, but in some of my photos, it looked a little skimpy. This one drapes nicely, gives me a little more wiggle room—and some insurance in case it shrinks in the wash.
I paired it with ecru-colored denim and brown raffia slide sandals for a simple, monochrome look that feels effortless and polished—perfect for transitioning into spring. The neutral tones keep it versatile, and the raffia texture adds a subtle touch of warmth and interest.

If anyone has a longish torso, check out the Everlane Boxy Oxford. It has the same vibe but is about three inches longer.
Thank you, I have a long torso and was thinking that this top was super cute, but would be too short for me.
Good to know!
I had no idea cropped button ups were trending! I just bought two new long button up shirts: a pinstriped blue and white one from Splendid and a navy linen button up from JCrew. You linked lots of cute options for his cropped style I’ll have to check out.
Is there a link for the “Daily Finds” springs tops under $100.? It wont let me click on any of the images.
Thanks so much
Kristine, are you looking at that email on your laptop? I can never click on any of the Daily Finds on my HP laptop, but I can on my phone. Odd, I know! I am not sure if the problem is on my end, or Jo-Lynne’s.
I have no idea why that happens to some people. I don’t know if it’s like a pop-up blocker situation or something?
I bought several last spring and summer. Being petite they’re ideal for me. Old Navy makes petite sizes and I’m expecting to receive one I ordered today. I can normally wear crop shirts that aren’t for petites but I like them to fit better in the shoulders. I also wear them as jackets over sleeveless tops in the summer.
No. I’m too old for this trend. I’m almost 62 years old. Even if I weren’t, it’s still a no for me. I remember wearing crop tops and midriff baring shirts when I was younger and in much better shape. I always felt self conscious. Furthermore, many cropped tops are too boxy looking for my taste. You do you though.
I was just unpacking my spring clothes on the weekend and have a white linen crop blouse and sage green crop blouse! Good to know they’re still on trend.
Are you doing a post on white or ecru denim currently trending or have I just missed it?
I’ll have a bunch in the next try on haul.
I am really liking this trend! WHBM has some in different colors (FYI) and I bought a different one from Evereve.
great post!
Good to know, thanks!
I think the first outfit you featured is my favorite you’ve ever worn…so flattering and I’ve looked at that sweater countless times and I’m thinking I Need it…I bought a few cropped shirts last year from Banana Republic Factory and love them…good price point and they still look great after multiple washings..
Great post!
Frank & Eileen has a good one, too. Pricey, yes. But it’s a great fit. At least for me. Sometimes I find the cropped button-ups to be wide and boxy but this one is not.
Oh good to know, I’ll take a look. I’m trying to finalize my travel capsule for England and I think I want a solid white one.
I love the look of these shorter button-up shirts. I would wear them like you, as a shirt, but I would also wear a close-fitting tank underneath and keep the shirt completely open, or just unbuttoned more to see the tank. I do have a F&E button down shirt that I wear mostly as a lightweight summer jacket! Great Sarasota pics!
How do the Paige Anessa jeans compare to the Kut from the Kloth Meg ankle jeans?
I feel like they’re quite similar. they both fit a little closer in the hips and thighs and some wide leg pants, which is what I find most flattering for me personally.
I have a similar blue one from Old Navy that has sparkles in it that came out around Christmas. I have worn it alot with the sleeves rolled up to elbow in trying to do the roll up technique for proper stylish way of rolling up sleeves. Worked great ! I do like the shirt but miss the days of things being alittle simpler with just a great cute top and jeans! You know the extra cute fancy tops !
Thank you for another great post. I have ordered the crop shirt and cardigan, and can’t wait to receive. I don’t know what I would do without you!
I enjoy your blog so much. Would you consider doing a post on what to wear in the evening at home, to be comfy and stylish. Thank you!
I usually put on pajamas, lol! But I do have a few comfy travel sets and those stretchy pants from Aritzia that I brought to Florida. I’ll see what I can do. 🙂
