I first shared this post a few summers ago, and since then, linen pants have only become more popular and more widely available in a variety of styles and price points, so I thought it was time for a refresh. I’ve updated it with a few newer styles I’ve added to my closet, along with some outfit ideas and styling tips for wearing linen pants this summer.

I’ll admit that I’ve always gravitated more toward denim and tailored trousers, but over the years I’ve found a handful of linen styles that work well for me. As the category has expanded, it’s become much easier to find options with more structure and polish than the drawstring styles that used to dominate the market.
Whether you prefer a relaxed drawstring style, a tailored trouser silhouette, or something in between, linen pants can be a stylish and practical option for hot summer days. I hope these looks give you a few ideas for making them feel modern, polished, and easy to wear. And if you’re shopping for a new pair, I’ve also included a roundup of my favorite linen pants at the end of the post.
1. Pair Linen Pants with a Structured Top
One of my favorite ways to wear linen pants is with a more structured top. Since linen naturally has a relaxed feel, pairing it with a fitted muscle tee or power shoulder top creates a nice balance and keeps the outfit from feeling too casual.

In this outfit, I paired brown linen pants with a ribbed green muscle tee and simple accessories. I like how the clean lines of the top balance the relaxed drape of the pants, while the rich brown color gives the look a sophisticated feel. It’s an easy outfit formula that feels polished without trying too hard and works for everything from lunch with friends to casual dinner plans.

2. Pair Linen Pants with a Simple Tank or Tee

One of the simplest ways to style linen pants is with a simple tank or t-shirt. Keeping the top streamlined lets the pants take center stage, and it’s a formula that works whether you’re wearing a bold color, a relaxed drawstring style, or a more tailored trouser silhouette.
Quince Patch Pocket Linen Pants + Black Tank
A simple tank is one of the easiest tops to pair with linen pants, especially when you’re traveling. The fitted silhouette balances the relaxed shape of the pants, while the flat front with button-and-zipper closure and patch-pocket details give these linen pants a slightly more polished feel than a typical drawstring style.
I kept the accessories simple with metallic sandals, a straw clutch, and a few coastal-inspired pieces of jewelry. It’s an easy outfit formula that feels relaxed enough for vacation but still polished enough for dinner or sightseeing.

Pink Linen Pants + White Tee
These bright pink linen pants make enough of a statement on their own, so I kept the rest of the outfit simple with a white v-neck tee and metallic sandals. When you’re wearing a bold color, a simple top allows the pants to take center stage without the outfit feeling overwhelming.
Looking back, I’d probably add a chunkier necklace or statement earrings to give the outfit a more current feel, but the overall formula still works. Pairing a colorful linen pant with neutral basics is an easy way to incorporate a bold color while staying within your comfort zone.

Green Linen Cargo Pants + Black Tee
This outfit shows how versatile linen pants can be for everyday wear. The fitted black tee keeps the look simple and streamlined, while the cargo styling and drawstring waist add to the relaxed, casual vibe.
I paired them with Birkenstocks for an easy weekend look, but swapping them for leather sandals and adding a few statement accessories would instantly dress the outfit up. It’s a great reminder that linen pants don’t have to feel overly beachy or resort-inspired—they can be just as practical and easy to wear as your favorite jeans.

3. Pair Linen Pants with a Button-Down Shirt

A button-down shirt is one of the easiest ways to make linen pants feel a little more polished. Whether you choose a classic cotton shirt or a linen version, the tailored shape balances the relaxed feel of the pants and creates an outfit that looks put-together without sacrificing comfort.
Linen Utility Joggers + a White Linen Button-Down
Linen doesn’t always have to mean wide-leg trousers. These linen utility joggers offer a more casual take on the trend, but pairing them with a simple white linen button-down keeps the overall look feeling polished.
I also love the linen-on-linen combination here. Because the pieces are in neutral shades and have clean, tailored lines, the outfit feels relaxed and sophisticated rather than overly casual. It’s an easy formula for hot summer days when you want to stay cool without sacrificing style.

4. Add a Lightweight Layer

One thing I’ve learned about linen pants is that they often look more polished when paired with a lightweight layer. A denim jacket, utility jacket, sweater draped over the shoulders, or linen blazer can add structure, visual interest, and help the outfit feel a little more finished.
Black Linen Pants + White Tee + Denim Jacket
A denim jacket is a great way to add a bit of structure to linen pants. The contrast between the relaxed linen and the more substantial denim creates balance and gives the outfit a more polished feel.

Pink Linen Pants + White Tee + Denim Jacket
The same formula works with brighter colors, too. Here, the denim jacket helps tone down the bold pink and makes the outfit feel approachable and easy to wear. It’s a great option if you’re experimenting with a color that’s outside your comfort zone.

Linen Pants + Sweater Over the Shoulders
Draping a lightweight sweater over your shoulders is a simple styling trick that instantly elevates linen pants. It adds another layer of color and texture while giving the outfit a relaxed, coastal feel. Plus, it’s practical to have on hand for air-conditioned restaurants or cooler evenings.

Linen Pants + a Matching Linen Jacket
A matching linen jacket and pants create a chic, pulled-together look with very little effort. The coordinating pieces feel polished, while the breathable fabric keeps the outfit comfortable even in warm weather. If you’re unsure how to style linen pants, a matching set takes all the guesswork out of getting dressed.

5. Create a Monochromatic Look

Monochromatic outfits are one of my favorite ways to make linen pants feel a little more elevated. When you’re working within a single color palette, the focus shifts to the different textures in the outfit, which creates interest without relying on bold colors or prints.
Black Linen Pants + Black Linen Vest
A matching linen vest and pants create a sleek, modern look that feels polished without being overly formal. I especially love this outfit formula for summer because the vest provides structure while the linen fabric keeps everything lightweight and breathable.

Since the outfit is all one color, the accessories play an important role. I carried an ivory east-west bag to add some contrast and keep the look feeling light, and paired it with black open-toe wedge slingbacks for a little height and polish while maintaining the streamlined feel of the outfit. An ivory strappy heel would work really well here, too.
And for another option, SPANX has a similar linen vest and wide-leg pant set, with four colors to choose from.

Black Linen Pants + Black Tank
For a more casual take on monochromatic dressing, try pairing black linen pants with a simple black tank.

I added a utility jacket for a little extra structure. The mix of linen, ribbed knit, leather sandals, and raffia accessories keeps the outfit from feeling flat.
Style Tip: Monochromatic outfits work best when you mix textures. Combining linen, knitwear, leather, raffia, and metal accessories adds depth and dimension while maintaining a clean, cohesive look.

Styling Tip: Lean Into Natural Textures
Linen naturally pairs well with other organic textures, which is why raffia bags, woven leather accessories, wood beads, and straw hats work so well with these outfits. These pieces add interest and warmth while complementing the relaxed feel of linen.

Awesome post with some great tips and outfit ideas!!! Love monochromatic with texture!
You look so good in all these combinations but you look especially great in the black linen pants and black linen vest combo. Black suits you very well!
You look fabulous in the black linen pants and vest! And the others, too, the black is just my favorite.
I have been really impressed with Banana Republic’s linen options this year – they feel crisp and tailored enough that I can wear the trousers and button-down shirts to work. (I also just bought their cotton poplin barrel pull-on pants in a light tan, and LOVE them as another casual summer option.) I need to go check out Spanx and Kut from the Kloth’s options now, based on your great outfits.
Loving linen looks. Wearing a pair this season but I’m not a fan still how bad they wrinkle. I still like my blend ones that don’t. I’ve had them years and still look new. I bought the flax linen jacket to go with the flax linen pants you recommended from Quince and in this post and it’s coming today. Hope I can to the wrinkles lol Such a good alternative to shorts to stay cool. I’m actually looking for a cute pair of red ones. Any suggestions?
Gap Factory has red ones.
I love the black linen vest and pants also! It can suit many occasions. I always have trouble with vests, like the gap opening between buttons. It doesn’t look like you have that issue here??
No, it fits perfectly.
Great styling ideas, and thanks for including a roundup of linen pants options! I noticed you have several Quince items listed. Have you been pleased with their quality, both in general and specifically with these linen items? I have not ordered from them yet but would like to try them. Would love to hear your insights on their quality, especially if certain categories are better than others.
Hi, Megan. Yes, I’m generally very pleased with their quality. Here’s a post I did on a bunch of my favorite items from them: https://jolynneshane.com/the-best-quince-finds-for-your-next-vacation.html
And a winter one: https://jolynneshane.com/best-quince-winter-pieces.html
I think they do sweaters and linen especially well. And a lot of ladies like their denim; the price point is hard to beat, but I don’t like it as much as my premium denim favorites.
