How to Wear Coated Denim for Fall: Chic Outfit Ideas to Try

There’s something about coated denim that just makes an outfit feel a little more special. It has that sleek, slightly edgy vibe of leather pants but with the comfort and ease of your favorite jeans, and the subtle sheen adds a hint of texture and depth that makes even simple fall outfits stand out. I love that it works just as well with a cozy sweater and boots as it does with a blouse and heels.

Today I’m sharing a new pair I styled this season, along with a few favorite past looks to show how easy it is to work this trend into your fall wardrobe.

These are the KUT from the Kloth Jean Coated Wide Leg Pants in Chocolate with a 31 1/2″ inseam, which are almost sold out at Nordstrom, and I can’t find them anywhere else in the coated version. I believe they were a Nordstrom Exclusive for the Anniversary Sale, although the Jean style comes in several other fabrics and colors on the KUT from the Kloth website. (I’ve got my eye on this corduroy pair!)

I really like the cut; it’s wide leg without being too voluminous, and the 31″ inseam is lengthening and perfect for wearing with a heel. Plus, the chocolate color is a softer alternative to black and very much on trend this season.

I styled them here for a date night look with a black sweater top with mesh puff sleeves and black suede booties to bookend the outfit. The mix of chocolate brown and black feels modern and unexpected—but in the best way.

This top is from EVEREVE, and I love the combination of the rib knit body and sheer puff sleeves. I’m not usually drawn to puff sleeves since they can add extra volume through the shoulders, but because these are sheer, the effect is softer and more balanced. The slight volume in the sleeves actually helps offset the wide leg of the pants, while the fitted body keeps the proportions in check.

I left the top untucked here, and I like how the modern cropped length just grazes the waistband of the pants, but you could also tuck it in and add a belt for another point of interest. Looking back, I do wish I’d added more accessories. A bold pair of earrings or maybe a statement necklace would really complete the look. I tend to prefer a “less is more” approach, but this outfit could definitely use a little extra something.

The suede booties add a nice contrast of texture, and the subtle pointy toe helps elongate the leg while keeping the look date-night appropriate. I picked up these Veronica Beard booties during the #NSale, and I love them, but they’re definitely an investment at full price. If you’re looking for something similar for less, Target has a great budget-friendly option, and Macy’s has styles from Marc Fisher and Lauren Ralph Lauren at a more moderate price point. I also carried a black lizard-print bag for one more layer of texture.

Another way to style these pants is with a monochromatic look, as I did here with a chocolate brown sweater and matching boots. This outfit definitely needs a few more layers and accessories to feel complete, though. I like the idea of topping it with a leopard print coat, something that really pops while still staying within the brown color palette, and adding some bolder jewelry to finish it off.

And here’s another monochromatic option with shades of brown. I love this look that I styled a few years ago. The combination of the luxe, cozy taupe sweater with the coated brown jeans creates a softer, slightly more casual vibe than the dressier outfit above.

Once again, I created a bookend effect with taupe suede booties, and I love how the mix of textures adds depth and interest. This time, I added a multi-colored stone necklace that really pops against the neutral backdrop of the outfit—it’s a good reminder of how a statement accessory can elevate a simple, cozy look.

For a fun holiday look, I styled these black coated flares with a gorgeous hunter green cashmere sweater cardigan. The cardigan I’m wearing here is no longer available, but I found a similar one at EVEREVE that I love. The scoop neckline and relaxed shape feel effortlessly chic, and the shorter length makes it easy to throw on with just about any style of pants.

I wore black suede booties to create a contrast of texture with the coated black pants, and I chose a pointy toe with a kitten heel to help lengthen the leg and keep the look sleek and elevated.

For accessories, I added a multi-layer necklace to fill in the neckline, and while it’s hard to see against my hair, I was wearing statement earrings as well. The crystal-embellished frame clutch adds a fun holiday flair, but a more subdued black crossbody would work perfectly for a dinner out or a more casual gathering.

I also styled that same coated denim and suede boot combo with a luxe gray cashmere sweater and a black faux fur jacket for a more minimalistic monochromatic look. The faux fur adds another layer of texture that contrasts beautifully with the coated denim and the softness of the cashmere.

I hope this post inspires you with some new ideas for styling your coated denim, or to give it a try if it hasn’t been part of your rotation! It’s such a fun and easy way to elevate a holiday look or make an everyday outfit feel a little more special.

  1. How do you wash your coated jeans? Do they wrinkle, and if so, how do you get the wrinkles out. I assume ironing is out.

  2. I never thought coated denim was for me, but it’s really grown on me the way you and other bloggers style it. I love these outfits! Just wish some of these brands had more inclusive sizing- need to go on the hunt. And I’m over the moon right now, because I’ve been admiring your Veronica Beard boots and shoes, and I just scored a cognac suede pair of booties (Leone) on eBay for $89!

  3. It’s so casual where I live I think I’ll
Pass as I’d feel I’d stick out if I wore these. Maybe for Christmas for church but these days with my husband retired we don’t have his work holiday party anymore and any other one we might attend would be more casual, just hanging with friends. You look great in all these outfits. Enjoy your visit with Becca.

  4. I have the WHBM Black Coated Denim and the KUT Brown Coated Denim. Love them for date nights and nights out. So comfortable! Don’t stretch out. Love how you styled them. I wish the green v neck sweater was still available, beautiful.

  5. Coated denim looks a little like leather, I think. Which for me, makes it a pass. Edgy isn’t a word that enters my fashion vocabulary, not even a smidge. 🙂 But the style looks very chic on you. Personally, I think you look better in a combination of black and brown, rather than all brown. Probably because you’re a winter, and winters wear black exceptionally well! 🙂 Oh, and that hunter green sweater is super nice.

  6. I love that black top from Evereve – and it’s so pretty on you! This is what Evereve does so well, clothes that are unique.
FYI, the Rowen washed maroon henley sweatshirt from Evereve that I ordered came today. I ended up ordering size Small, as I felt the arms would be too long on me in a Medium (I have narrow shoulders and short arms). The small fits perfectly. I would say it’s true to size. I love the color, too. Thanks for the heads-up on this one!

  7. I love coated jeans! I’ve been wearing them off and on for many years. I have a black pair I bought from Nordstrom last year from Hidden Jeans and they fit very well for under $100 jeans. I also love velvet flare pants for this time of year, including the brown ones you styled years ago. I have them and love them! Back then I didn’t consider brown as a holiday color but I like it a lot more now.
