A Cool Layered Look for Fall

Thanks to Nordstrom and ShopStyle for sponsoring this post.

It’s ironic that I’m sharing this post today because it’s been unseasonably warm here in Pennsylvania this week. However, fall weather is returning this weekend, and I’m ready for all the layering and accessorizing.

There is no accessory more fundamentally fall than a cozy scarf, and with more and more activities happening outside this year, an oversized scarf like this one can serve multiple purposes.

You can wrap it around your neck like a traditional scarf, for a chic cold weather layered look.

Or you can throw it around your shoulders like a blanket, if you get chilly when you’re at a socially distanced outdoor gathering.

If you get overheated, just toss it in your tote, and carry on about your day.

I found this oversized plaid scarf at Nordstrom — it’s by Treasure & Bond, one of the Nordstrom Made Brands.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Nordstrom’s best kept secret is their in-house brands. They’re very well priced for the level of quality, and they make a wide variety of styles for work and weekend.

In fact, this whole look is made up of Nordstrom Made brands.

A moto jacket is another one of my favorite layering pieces for fall. It’s generally more flattering than a cardigan, and it gives that effortless cool-girl vibe to a basic sweater and jeans.

Plus, you get some extra warmth without the bulk of a coat.

Faux leather has come a long way in the last few years, and it’s a great option when buying a piece you may not wear a lot.

This drape collar faux leather jacket by Halogen is priced affordably at under $100. I love this light coffee color for a change, but it also comes in black.

And while we’re talking about Halogen, they have some of the best cashmere sweaters you can find under $100.

This is their cashmere v-neck, and they also have a crewneck and a turtleneck.

All of these styles come in tons of great colors and neutral tones, and they have a fabulous fit and feel. I’ve had several of each over the years.

I love the updates they’ve made to the v-neck. I think the detail around the neckline is so pretty, and the extra long ribbed cuffs are a nice touch.

Croc embossed leather is a hot trend for fall, and I thought these burgundy block heeled booties were fun for a change.

They have that modern chunky heel/pointy toe combo going on, and they run true to size. I have my usual size 8.

I picked up these BP. gradient square sunnies because I’ve been wanting to find a more wallet-friendly pair of sunglasses to recommend, and these have such a great shape and fit. You seriously won’t believe the price.

Finally, I added these brushed drop earrings and bezel station necklace to complete the outfit.

I love this chic layered look for casual outdoor fall events and errands. The dark wash jeans are a classic wardrobe staple, and the raw hem gives them a modern edge.

The cashmere sweater is super luxe and soft, and the faux leather jacket elevates the look and adds a nice contrast of textures.

I can remove the jacket if I want to be more relaxed and comfortable, but it’s not too heavy to keep on as part of my outfit if I want to.

And when it gets chilly, I’ll pull out my cozy plaid blanket scarf and wrap up so I’m toasty warm and stay out as long as I want.

If you’re looking to refresh your fall wardrobe, be sure to check out the Nordstrom made brands. They have just about anything you could possibly need, at a variety of price points to fit almost any budget.

  1. Great outfit. I’ve been looking at this sweater for a while. Is the beige thin and see through at all? Really like the Halogen ones I have in the crew neck. Glad you had a great college visit.

  2. Gosh, I struggle with those large scarves. I bought one in a beautiful beige, cream and gray plaid last year but never could figure out how to wear it. I like the draped over your shoulders look. Made me wonder if it could be worn in a poncho style with a pin. Any ideas on how I could style that?

  3. I love the look and those booties are beyond cool ! The only other comment I have is that I could tell immediately that you were not wearing your premium denim that you usually wear. It for sure makes a difference, but at the same time I understand the need for less expensive options. We were also having amazing weather here in Ohio, but it just turned cold again aka seasonable 🙂

  4. I love this outfit and the look on you!  In the past, I have been very impressed with the Nordstrom branded items that I have purchased.  I’m definitely going to check out the scarf, and who knows what else.  I’m glad that you and Caroline have had a good visit.  Praying for safe travels home.  How long does it take to the drive from there to your home?

    1. Thanks, Ginger. It’s a 6-hour drive, but with stops, it takes more like 7. Plus, it goes right through NYC, so not for the faint of heart. Very grateful to be home safe and sound.

  5. I love the Moro jacket in that color! I didn’t see that you posted what size you’re wearing in it? Is it tts? I’m glad you enjoyed your college visit with  Caroline!

  6. Love the color of the moto jacket. Its a nice change from black. Nearly fell off my chair when I saw how reasonable those cute Nordstrom sunglasses are: $15?! Wow! I am hard on my sunglasses so need to add this to my stocking stuffers list. It is darn cold here 5F so looking at your photo sitting outside with pleasure…. But not happening here in my neck of the woods today! Safe travels home. Glad you and Caroline got to tour your alma mater. Regardless of what she chooses, its a nice experience and memory for you two.

  7. Thank you especially for the sunglasses recommendation. I make a point of only buying inexpensive sunnies because I’m always losing them, scratching them, or breaking them! Your post on “13 Ways to Elevate Your Style” had me second-guessing that long-held view, but I think this pair is cheap without looking cheap. So compromise found!

    1. Yes! I didn’t mean they had to be expensive. I just meant they should fit well and make a statement. I was so happy to find these so I have a wallet-friendly option to recommend.

  8. I love the sweater on you but was not happy with the Halogen cashmere sweater I ordered because it felt thinner than I expected and kind of scratchy. I ordered one of their Signature cashmere sweaters during the NAS and oh-em-gee it was thick and so soft! But alas it also had a big stain smack in the front, and by then they were sold out 🙁 I’m curious if you ended up keeping the jacket? I’ve tried a number of similar jackets but haven’t found one yet that I like enough to keep.

  9. Love this outfit!  I’ve always looked for smaller scarves because I feel like the bigger blanket ones swallow me, but I have already pulled a couple out of my closet to wrap up in while sitting outdoors.  I have a feeling I will be using them much more this year. I love the color of this one.  Might need a new one!  😁  Have a good trip back!
