Happy Monday, friends! The weather finally turned last week, and it feels like fall is here to stay. I love this time of year—when a great jacket can make even the simplest outfit feel put-together. Last fall, I shared my post on five stylish jackets to have in your closet, and today I’m revisiting that topic to share the ones I’m wearing most right now—and how I’m styling them.

The Barn Jacket — Classic with a Heritage Twist
The barn jacket is everywhere this season, and I love how it adds structure to casual outfits while still feeling relaxed and even a bit rugged. This year’s versions feel fresher with slightly cropped proportions and rich neutral tones.

Gap Factory has this traditional style that comes in both olive and brown, and I like it so much, I actually got it in both! It’s more of a true outerwear piece than an outfit topper, but it’s a really nice option to have on hand this season—and the price point is fantastic.

I also picked up this cropped version at EVEREVE, and I love the shorter fit and plaid lining—plus it has that classic brown, suede-feel collar that gives it an authentic touch.

The Utility-Inspired Jacket — Effortless Everyday Layer
A fall classic, the utility jacket is getting an update this season with softer fabrics and cleaner cuts that feel a little more refined. I’m also loving that there are more color choices this year beyond the traditional olive green.
I have a few new favorites, including the Bobbie Utility Jacket in Raisin—a color that’s everywhere right now. I styled it here over a black ribbed top with washed black jeans for a tonal, everyday look.

I also still have and love the Rocky Utility Jacket in black from last spring, which has sadly been discontinued. It has a slightly dressier feel while still keeping that casual, utilitarian vibe.

Leather Jackets — Edgy Meets Sophisticated
I’ve always been a fan of a leather jacket. It’s that perfect blend of luxe and edgy, and it’s super versatile—you can wear it with everything from jeans and tees to dresses and boots.
This year, I added this Michael Kors leather jacket to my closet, and I’m loving the ‘90s-inspired button-front and streamlined shape.

I still have my AllSaints Orten as well, which has more of a classic bomber fit, and I’m looking forward to bringing that one out again soon. I do wish I’d kept the chocolate brown EVEREVE faux leather bomber from last season—my closet could really use that right now with all of my brown shoes and bags in rotation! I’m keeping my eye out for something similar.

The Trench — Polished and Practical
While not technically a “fall jacket,” I find myself reaching for my trench coats quite a bit this time of year. I have the longer, oversized Sézane Clyde Trench that I bought last spring, with I’m excited to break out again this fall.

And of course, there’s the London Fog hooded water-repellant trench I wore in Scotland and London last month and on a rainy day in NYC a while back. It’s a great option when the weather is messy.

Cropped trench styles are still going strong, too. Mine is from LOFT from a few seasons ago, but Aritzia has a similar style, and I also love this single-breasted version from Tuckernuck.

Denim Jacket — Update to a Classic
I haven’t been reaching for my classic denim jackets as much lately, but I do love the cloth & stone Flap Pocket Zipper Shacket from EVEREVE in a soft, denim-look fabric. It’s a lightweight rayon blend that feels more fluid and drapey than traditional denim, which makes it perfect for early fall. I like how it pairs with olive pants, and I styled it with a simple white tee and brown ballet flats to keep the look clean and classic.

It’s always fun to see how my fall jacket lineup shifts from year to year. This time around, I’m gravitating toward pieces with texture and structure—timeless layers that can be dressed up or down depending on the day. Whether you’re running errands or heading out for dinner, the right jacket really does make the outfit.

JoLynne I believe you mentioned before that you’ve been typed a “winter”. I don’t know how you do it but all these warm tone colors in brown, camel, olive, etc. look great on you. I look sick or tired in these colors no matter what I do with my makeup, I’m a “winter” and having a hard time navigating through all these earth tones that are prevalent this year. When and if you see options in a cooler palette, please include them for us that don’t look good in warm tones. Thank you
I don’t get too hung up on being a Winter, but I do try to stick to cooler tones, and many of these pieces are cool tones, even the browns. The Gap Factory stripe sweater is a cool brown, the Bobbie Utility in raisin is cool, and all of the black, of course. The blue mock neck is definitely a winter-friendly color, and the “denim jacket”. And I’d say that London Fog trench is a cool beige. The Arizia one is warmer. The olive gap factory barn coat is a cool tone, although the brown one definitely is not. Not so sure about the crop Avery, but that brown tank I’m wearing with it has cool undertones.
Yes Rose I agree. I’m having a hard time with the trending browns etc. too as a vivid Summer which is almost a Winter. Plus my hair is on the grey side now, so I really struggle with Fall colors. I still add cognac as my accessories to the colors I do look good in.
I do love a jacket! The Evereve Bobbie Utility is such a fun color. And I really want the Michael Kors leather jacket. Leather jackets are my favorite and this style would really update my inventory. I’ve been looking at it for weeks and trying to justify the cost. I guess I need to do the per-wear breakdown. I wonder if it’s a Nordstrom exclusive, as I can’t find it anywhere else. Was it a Nordy sale item?
Jacket question: I have a Quince silk maxi slip dress (closer to a midi on me) and have worn it with sandals or pointed slingbacks several times, but love the look with a pair of boots — knee high or short– for a more casual look. What style jacket would work with it? I have a fundraiser event to attend later in the month, and the dress is perfect for it, but part of the evening is in a tent outside.
Yeah, the Michael Kors was an #NSale item, and I think it is exclusive to Nordstrom. I would totally wear a leather jacket over that dress.
Yes you got me into completer pieces years ago. Really makes a difference for my outfits now. I’m still eyeing the Evereve raisen color one but don’t like the price. lol But when I wait for sales the sizes go quick.
They do!
Loved that 90s button up leather jacket from when you first showed it–yum! Maybe it will go on sale again. I saw the Gap barn jacket when I was last there, before your post, just wasn’t sure I needed another jacket–but it is cute–love the green–it does tend to run alittle big and boxy–now I see its pretty much sold out.
Yeah, the barn jacket went fast!
Hi, Can you tell me how the Bobby utility jkt runs?
Not sure if I should go small or xs.
Thank you
I feel like it’s a little roomy. I went with the small and I sometimes go with medium in jackets.
Hi, would you please give a few styling options for the cropped trench jacket? Thank you
Sure, that would make a good blog post!
This had me pulling out my fall jackets. My closet faves are a navy Brooks Brothers trench (they do not make them like they used to), barn jacket from Filson, and a few casual blazers. The short boxy silhouette is not a good look for me. Considering looking for a denim jacket in a different silhouette. I have donated so many trucker cuts because I never reach for them.
