I thought I’d dip my toe into the off the shoulder top trend with this navy slub knit top by one of my favorite brands, Splendid. I really like the look, but I wondered if I’m too old and should take a pass on this trend. I received a lot of positive feedback when I posted this outfit on Instagram, so I decided to go ahead and shoot it and then decide.
Unfortunately, I don’t think this particular off the shoulder top is for me. While I like the idea of it, the slub knit is thin, and it actually was sort of see-through across the chest area. We had to work a little Photoshop magic to make these pictures suitable for public consumption. Ha!
I do like the top, though, and I think it would be perfect on someone with a little less baggage up top. It’s very soft and comfortable, which is what Splendid is known for.
I know I could buy a darker bra, and that would probably solve the issue with the thin fabric, but I don’t really want to invest in that so I sent this top back. I actually ordered a few more off-the-shoulder options to take with me on our trip to Maryland this weekend, and I scored with one of them. It’s red and really pretty! I can’t wait to show you!
I also feel this outfit could use a chunky necklace or something. When I put it together, I focused on adding large earrings and a stack of bracelets, but I think it still looks like it’s missing something. I ordered this Fringe Necklace, and I think that would have been pretty with this outfit, but now I’ll never know. Haha! Maybe it will work with my red top.
The bag I’m holding came from LeTote. I know I keep saying I’m going to quit LeTote, but they keep sending me such cute things! Haha! If you’re unfamiliar, LeTote is a fashion rental service for $49 a month. You get 3 garments and 2 accessories delivered to your door, and you can keep them as long as you want. You wear what you like, and when you’re done with it, you send it all back and get your next box within a few days. They take care of the cleaning. If you want to keep any of the items in your box, you can pay for them individually.
If you want to give it a try, sign up through my referral link, and you’ll get $25 towards your first month’s rental fee, and I’ll get a $15 credit. You will also get a referral code that you can share with your friends.
I paired the navy top with white pants because I love navy and white together, especially in spring and summer, but this top would also be cute with light wash jeans for a more casual look.
These are my Florence skinnies. I know I say this every time I feature them, but these are the quintessential white skinny jean. They are thick but not stiff, they hug your curves but don’t cling, and they don’t stretch out as you wear them. They have a 9-inch rise, so it’s not too low and not too high, and the leg opening isn’t too snug at the bottom, if you’re concerned about the ice cream cone effect, ha!
I wore wedges to keep the outfit dressy, but it would work just as well with a flat sandal. By the way, a Stuart Weitzman Event at Nordstrom Rack just started. Sizes are going fast, so you have to hurry. These that I am wearing are not on that sale, but many other gorgeous styles by this fab designer are available at 40-50% off!
I ‘ve had a few people ask for advice on strapless bras. I finally went to Nordstrom and got fitted for one so I will have the option of wearing halters and off-the-shoulder tops this summer. I tried on about every one in the store, and I ended up with this one. It’s fairly comfortable as far as strapless bras go.

I love anything from Splendid! That top is really cute and the navy and white look so good together! I haven’t tried the off the shoulder trend yet but this makes me want to!

Navy & white are fabulous together. I have stayed away from the off the shoulder trend for two reasons. One is that it makes me extremely self-conscious, and secondly every time I move my shoulders, the top would come off my shoulders and end up around my neck. I may have to give it another try because it looks really good on you.
I love that shirt! It’s a nice off the shoulder, without being too out there or uncomfortable. Navy is one of my favorite colors to wear too. Thanks for hosting.
I think you look fantastic in this this outfit. I doubt I would try the off the shoulder trend, but I’ve still enjoyed seeing so many cute looks with it lately. I’m also in the market for a strapless bra. I keep going back and forth on whether I want a really good one or just one one that will serve the purpose and get me by with a few tops. I can be so cheap sometimes! 😉
Love your off-shoulder to, sandals and clutch. Such nice, chic styling Jo-Lynne. I run a linkup on Thursdays. I would love for you to join me pretty lady. Your style is too good not to be shared so welcome by. Thanks and have a great weekend!

I love the navy and white combo. Bummer about it being on the thinner side!

So your first statement Jo-Lynne had me chuckle—-“am I too old for this” pops up in my head almost daily! But usually I’m getting better at realizing that clothing doesn’t have an age limit on it! My newest theory is I think most new styles are accepted by the younger generations first. Thus when I get around to trying them, my first instinct is to think they are for the younger girls because that’s who i’ve seen wear it!
But let me say, your shoulder look great and I think you are rocking this trend. Thanks for the recommendation on the strapless bra—although I haven’t decided if I’ll go forward with this style. I’m still liking the open shoulder shirts because I can wear my normal bra with them!

Hi Jo-Lynne,
YOUR BLOG LOOKS FANTASTIC! How funny that we both got a facelift the same time!!!! We have some similar things going on. I like the black menu bar you have going on at the top! Very chic!!!! Great theme!!!
I’ve emerged from tech land! It took me a whole week to get it all done, and I still have some glitches!! So good to be back and checking in, tho.
Love the navy and white. Was laughing out loud about your comment on photoshop, I’ve had to do that before with a white teeshirt. HA!! Good tips on the off the shoulder look, if I get one, I will make sure it’s a woven verses a knit….I think you were right about the fabric.
I’ve wondered the same thing about being too old for that trend…I’m only a couple years behind you. Seeing you style it gives me courage to try it. 🙂 Great job!!!
xx-Shannon
Shannon! Your site looks awesome! Congrats on getting self hosted, and your theme is perfect – simple and pretty. We were definitely channeling each other on this one. Haha!
I think you look very nice Jo-Lynne! I do hope that y’all have an enjoyable weekend in spite of the weather. Safe travels. Oh, your blog design looks great!
Thanks, Ginger. I’m sure we will. 🙂
That top look so pretty on you!! I definitely don’t think you’re too old. 🙂 The blog redo looks fabulous and very much “you”.
Have fun this weekend,
cyndi
Thank you!! xo
Looks match, cool and simple
I disagree with adding a necklace. I think the appeal of an off-the-shoulder look is highlighting the clavicle and the tops of the shoulders. Maybe your desire for a “fill-in” necklace is more because you are uncomfortable with that part of your skin showing. If that is the case, skip this type of blouse. But I don’t think you are too old for it–wear it while you can if you are comfortable.
Thanks, Peggy. I’m really not uncomfortable with the neckline and shoulders showing. I just felt the outfit looked a little incomplete. I appreciate your input!
The navy and white look so great together, but what a shame that the top is so thin. Beautiful colour on you!
I’m pretty sure the jeans have a 9 inch rise, not inseam 😉
OY. Thank you!
I love your wedges! They are super cute! 🙂

I think this outfit is the prettiest thing you have ever posted. I understand the fabric issue and the photoshop fixes:) Love it….. Nonetheless the whole silhouette is classy and not remotely “mutton dressed as lamb” in case you thought you were too old:):):)…. Lovely outfit; you look gorgeous!
LOL, thank you! xo
You look great, I too have trouble finding the right bra for off the shoulder tops…its a tricky thing I have yet to master. The bag LeTote sent is really cute, I can see why it is hard to quit it. 🙂

I love the navy top on you!
I found out that Le Tote does a once per month tote for $39 (I need to double check that), but cheaper than the unlimited tote. I found that it works perfectly for my needs! If I need a cute dress or top for an occasion that month, I just make sure there’s one in the tote! Just thought I’d share in case anyone was interested!
That is good to know! I’d totally do that one instead.
You look great in this outfit! Simple and classic with a little edge. Thanks for your inspiration:)
Has anyone ever told you that you look spectacular in white jeans???
I think the look is really cute and not too “young.” In fact, it’s kind of flirty without exposing too much! I also love navy & white.
I personally can’t wear off the shoulder because I just can’t handle the discomfort of a strapless bra (DDD cup). I would love to see you style a cold-shoulder top. I’m seeing a lot of them and it looks like a good solution to being flirty, not too skimpy and being able to wear a bra. But whenever I try them on, they look really “grandma” on me. Think I just haven’t found the right one…anyway, just a suggestion for future outfits.
I love navy and white for summer. I may have to find a good strapless bra so I can try the off-the-shoulder tops. They are very cute.
I took the plunge and got this off-the-shoulder top from Loft: http://www.loft.com/sunwashed-floral-vintage-soft-off-the-shoulder-tee/404222
Any tips on keeping it from riding up?
I want to try this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tk7u_NgXCMw
I think this style top looks great on you (and you are definitely not too old). I also love the navy and white combo especially with the tan wedges. I don’t think I could even try the off the shoulder trend because of the strapless bra issue (I don’t have one and I am an I cup. Seriously, an I cup. This limits a lot of my choices in tops actually) and my shoulders literally get too cold! But you are definitely owning this look!

What a great look! I think that top looks great on you, and I love that it is made of a knit material. I love your shoes too!
