I’ve confessed that I struggle a bit with the accessorizing thing, but I’m learning that there really are NO RULES. I mean, there are a few. Like basically, don’t overdo it. But these days almost anything goes.
Part of having great style is taking taking calculated risks. Do something a little bit unexpected, and if it works, the payoff is huge. I’m not exactly a risk taker, but sometimes taking a step outside of my comfort zone is exactly what I need.
This is my new favorite fashion tip. It’s so simple that it’s really not worth an entire blog post, but since this is what I do (and because only 20% of my fans see my Facebook page updates) here it is.
Take a fancy necklace or a big stack of sparkly bangles and throw them on with your favorite t-shirt and jeans.
That’s it. Seriously.
It’s so fun and EASY and it also helps you get your money’s worth out of your fancy jewelry because, let’s face it, how often do you get a chance to dress up and go out? If you’re anything like me, it’s not very.
Here I did it with earrings and a bracelet.
It’s just something unexpected that elevates a casual outfit to one that’s a little bit special.
I even threw together a quick YouTube video to show it in action.
The jewelry shown is by Stella and Dot. As most of you know, I’m an independent stylist for Stella & Dot. I invite you to shop my online boutique for these great styles and more! If you ever have any questions, please let me know!

I love this tip! It took me a bit to build the courage to wear something big and bold, but now I’m addicted. I absolutely love a plain tee with a statement necklace. Makes me feel and look fancy even when I’m wearing boring basics.
Love these looks -thanks for sharing 🙂
Love your tip! I’ve done that often with bracelets but I need to step outside of my comfort zone and try the necklace as well. I am also curious about your T-shirt since your summer wear seems to be my choice as well. I have been on a quest for the perfect summer T-shirt. I’ve tried some really expensive T-shirts as well as Target T-shirts and still haven’t found the perfect one. I’m also 42 and I like a fitted tee but not skin tight. Also debating the v-neck, crew neck or scoop neck. Just wondering your thoughts on this and if you have any suggestions? Thanks Jo-Lynne! Love your blog!
Melissa, maybe this post will help! https://www.jolynneshane.com/2014/04/how-to-wear-a-white-t-shirt.html
I love doing this because so many of my clothes are teeshirts! And I always worry I look under dressed but people always say oh I love your outfit so I know it works! 😉
Isn’t Facebook frustrating these days? Thanks for sharing your tip here. I love dressing up my t-shirts with statement necklaces and earrings in the summer. As a matter of fact, I’m about to do that to go to my daughter’s 4th grade promotion ceremony. 🙂
This is perfect Jo-Lynne! I always wonder if I’m overdoing it by adding to a simple tee – well no more. 🙂
I’m such a plain jane. It took me all these years to realize I could do that! LOL.
I became addicted to bubble necklaces. I have them in many colors! Loft also had great markdowns on jewelry recently and I found several pieces that are perfect for adding a little flair to the basics.
