Red, White & Blue Beach Capsule Wardrobe

I’m not heading to the beach this summer, which feels a little strange. I can’t remember the last time we didn’t spend a week at the Jersey Shore (or in last year’s case, Fenwick Island, Delaware) either as a family or with extended family. I’m hoping to get “Down the Shore” for a day here and there, but I won’t need a full vacation capsule this year.

That said, a few of you have asked for vacation packing help for warm-weather trips, so I put together a Red, White & Blue beach capsule built around the popular 5-4-3-2-1 packing method. Whether you’re planning a beach vacation or just looking for festive 4th of July outfit ideas, this mini capsule doubles as a stylish and practical summer packing list.

5-4-3-2-1 Packing List for Summer Travel

I decided to challenge myself and build this capsule around the 5-4-3-2-1 packing method: 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 dresses, 2 pairs of shoes, and 1 swimsuit—plus a few versatile extras to round things out. The color palette is festive and timeless, and every piece is easy to mix and match.

And because I can never leave well enough alone, I’m also including a few alternative options below—some more budget-friendly, others a little splurgier. I hope it’s helpful!

5 Tops: Breezy Summer Staples That Mix & Match

  1. Blue & white stripe linen button-up – perfect as a cover-up or styled with shorts or pants
  2. Red tie-front tank, option – a fun pop of color that works with all the bottoms
  3. White v-neck tank, option – goes with everything and layers easily under the button-up
  4. Red & white stripe muscle tee, option – adds pattern and personality
  5. Navy flutter sleeve top, option – great for dinner or evening plans

4 Bottoms: From Poolside to Dinner Ready

  1. Light wash 4″ denim shorts – they pair with every top and double as a swim cover-up
  2. Navy linen drawstring shorts – comfortable and polished
  3. White drawstring linen pants – relaxed, breathable, and perfect for warm evenings
  4. Navy & white ruched midi skirt, option – doubles as a dressier look or a cover-up

3 Dresses: Easy One-and-Done Looks

  1. Blue muscle tee dress, option – easy for sightseeing, beach walks, or casual lunches
  2. FARM Rio Tropical Tapestry Red Slip Dress, option– your statement piece for evenings or dressier outings
  3. White linen shift dress – clean, classic, and perfect for dinner out

2 Pairs of Shoes: Practical + Polished

  1. Crochet slide sandals – lightweight, beachy, comfortable, and right on trend
  2. Gold espadrille wedges, option – dressy yet walkable; great for dinners or summer events

Optional 3rd: Sneakers

  • Paul Green leather sneakers – my go-to for travel and lots of walking (think cushion + comfort without sacrificing style)
  • adidas Samba – a trendier option that adds athletic chic to casual outfits

Swimsuit: A Classic You’ll Feel Great In

  1. Red one-piece – flattering and festive
Other colors available if red’s not your thing—and of course, feel free to toss in a second suit if you’ll be spending a lot of time poolside.

Optional Add-Ons: Accessories That Elevate

Even though they’re optional, the right accessories can really pull your outfits together and make your packing list feel complete. These are a few extras you may want to consider adding to your beach vacation capsule for added function, comfort, and style. Think: sun protection, day-to-night bags, and easy layers that don’t take up much space in your suitcase.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re packing for a long weekend or a full week away, the 5-4-3-2-1 method is a great way to simplify your list while still giving you plenty of outfit options. And with a festive color palette like this one, it’s easy to stay stylish without overthinking it. I hope this beach vacation capsule gives you some inspiration as you prep for your own summer getaway—or even just for a laid-back 4th of July at home.

  1. The timing of this blog could not be more perfect. We are traveling to Savannah. I was planning on a capsule wardrobe for the trip but this is going to help me hone it in. Thank you so much!

  2. I’m definitely going to remember the 5-4-3-2-1 method and also the idea of the color palette.
I’ve tried to incorporate sticking with items within the same color palette when packing for prior trips. It certainly makes it a lot easier when you have the right pieces to mix-and-match well-being away.
I hope you enjoy your day in the pool . That’s my plan to do today as well as we’re hitting 100 !

  3. I always seem to overpack thank you for sharing the 54321 method I will be using this for a upcoming trip

  4. I have never heard of the 5-4-3-2-1 method, but it sounds BRILLIANT! Thank you for sharing it, this post will be bookmarked for sure!

  5. I would never be able to stick with such a small capsule wardrobe for my beach trip! But of course we drive to our destination, so that gives me more room!! I overpack the summery, fun jewelry, it is a great way to give a plain tank a completely new look. And I could never image taking only one bathing suit. Nothing worse than wearing a suit in the morning, then trying to re-wear it again after lunch and it’s still wet! HAHA!! I love the red/white/navy, chambray color ways, perfect for summer! I know the Jersey Shore is close enough for you to make a quick daytrip if the seagulls call your name!! HAHA!!

    1. I agree – I would NEVER pack only one suit for a beach vacay, lol! I thought people were nuts when they told me to only take one or two last spring to Florida. (I took FOUR! And I wore them all multiple times.) Plus, they take up no room in the suitcase.

I would also never only bring 2 pairs of shoes. I need 3 b/c I need a sneaker for walking and a flip flop for the pool/beach and then a sandal for nicer dinners. But anyway, I guess if someone isn’t a pool/beach person, this 5-4-3-2-1 method might work. It’s still fun to consider. At least it starts things out pared down. You can always throw a few extras in, to suit your travel style. Also, jewelry is definitely an extra I would bring.

    2. I use this method but definitely always at least 2-3 swimsuits, could not imagine being at the the beach for a week wearing the same bathing suit everyday

  6. I always love these capsule trip/packing ideas!! They are such a great starting place and so adaptable if you want to add in some extra’s!! Thanks for sharing a great method on capsule packing!!! 54321 – just might be my new starting place!!!😍

  7. Great post – I’m on my second week in Maui and used this method (I have a washer/dryer available) and this method works perfectly, I do change a few things but same concept (we’re very active on vacation) and I’ll use it again to pack next month when we head to Santa Barbara for a week

  8. Hello! I love this post and the ideas. I’ll be vacationing at Table Rock Lake near Branson MO at a newer resort called Serenity Shores in July which will be hot and I need some new clothes.

Question: would you consider cutting off your skinny jeans to make a nice pair of cut off shorts for summer? I have a pair of white skinnies that fit great but they’re out of “style”. I hate to pay $40+ for a pair of cut offs when I have good clothes in my closet that I could re-purpose.

    Thanks!

      1. Would you cut off your skinnies?? Anyone else out there think this is a good idea or nor so much?

        1. I personally would not because I prefer denim shorts to not be tight around my thighs…and most of my skinnies were high rise (prefer mid rise shorts).
