I am obsessed with this outfit for some reason. Before it got hot here, I was wearing a version of this almost every day. I love the contrast of the long-sleeved Splendid Draped Thermal Hoodie with shorts.
Lately, it’s been far too hot to wear a cardigan, but I wear a tank and jean shorts almost every day, and I still say that everyone needs one of these cardigans in their summer wardrobe. It is perfect for throwing on over any casual summer outfit when it gets cool in the evening or when on vacation at a northern location. We always travel to Maine in the summer, and this is just the type of thing I like to bring along for the chilly mornings and evenings.
The striped tote is an oldie but goodie. It was my first Rebecca Minkoff bag. I will link to a few similar styles below. I love a black and white striped tote for summer — bonus if it’s waterproof like this one in coated cotton.
But back to the cardigan. The draped style is on trend and elongating, and the thermal cotton fabric is a nice change from sweater material. This swan color is perfect for summer, but it also comes in grey and black. I also have the black one. I NEVER buy doubles, so that right there shows you how much I must love it. For size reference, I’m wearing a medium.
Jean shorts are essential to my summer uniform. I swear, I wear them 4 or 5 days a week. It’s a problem, I know, but they are so comfortable, and they go with everything. I even throw them on with a tank top over my bathing suit for an easy and stylish “cover up.”
This outfit is perfect for a mild summer day at home or running errands. It is also something I’d wear over to a friend’s house for a BBQ on an evening that I expect the weather to get chilly when the sun goes down. I wore this when we were at the Hyatt resort a few weeks ago when the temperatures were in the low 70s. I love that you can take the cardigan off and still have a complete outfit.
When I wear one of these cardigans, I always wear a few of my Alex and Ani bangles because they fit over the arms and add an extra layer of detail to the outfit.
I wish I’d thought to take a picture without the cardigan so you can see the tank better, but then again, it is sold out, so nevermind. LOL!
Let’s talk about these sandals. I got on a Sam Edelman kick this summer, and I ended up with three pairs of their flat sandals. I love them all for different reasons. This pair is the Greta. I was drawn to these because they have a bit more substance than the popular Gigi and a slightly more edgy vibe, especially in the black pebbled leather. I find myself wearing them a lot more than I thought I would.
My necklace is old. I wanted something casual, and the black leather cord works well off the sandals. I’ve done my best to find something similar to link to, but I keep coming up with nothing. If you have a suggestion, please let me know.
I usually don’t belt my shorts, but I like how this one pulls the black from the sandals and the bag and the necklace together. I did the “front tuck” because this shirt is too long with the shorts if I leave it untucked in the front. The proportions work out to front tuck because the shorts are low rise and also fairly short.
Okay, one final look at the outfit because… well, I always like to end my outfit posts with a full-length picture. Ha! And while these were just quick front yard shots, so many turned out well, I had a hard time narrowing them down. I just love the cool, casual vibe, and the juxtaposition of the short shorts with the long draped cardigan.

Hi. JoLynne–what color would you describe “swan” as? In the pictures it looks white or maybe a soft white. Thanks
I would call it oatmeal. Does that help? Definitely not white, but it almost reads as white, if that makes any sense. I’d say it has cool undertones.
As a Mum of two under three, I love this outfit, because it suits my lifestyle in the summer, but it still has a certain ‘something’ to it – looks like it was put together with thought, rather than just dragging out any old shirt and shorts. My only issue is – I have yet to find a good pair of denim shorts. I cut off some old jeans the other day – but they don’t look right. And I also have to find a long cardigan. My life would be a lot easier if I could source all the stuff you wear here in the UK, but alas, that’s not to be. So I take the inspiration and hunt around.
Just a quick question – how high up in size do the Sam Edelman’s go in the US? They seem to stop here at size 7 (UK size, which is European 41) which isn’t big enough for me 🙁
That would be so frustrating. I’m sorry you can’t find the same pieces. The Sam Edelman’s definitely go up higher than 7 in the U.S. sizes. Mine are 8.5 US.
Love this outfit! I bought the Splendid cardigan in black and wish I had ordered it in the swan, too. Am debating if I love it enough to buy it when it’s not on sale, lol. Question on the Joe jean shorts. Are they true to size and do they stay that way throughout the day? I have problems with jean shorts in particular “growing” as the day goes on. I’m probably between sizes and that may be part of my problem. I have 3 nice pairs in my closet right now that I can really only wear half a day because after half a day, I’m tugging them up. Maybe I should be buying them tighter than I think? I’m usually a solid size 12 tall in pants unless I buy brands that run big like Kut from the Kloth or NYDJ. Also, how do you rate the comfort on the very flat sandals? I keep wanting to try a pair but I wonder if they’ll be uncomfortable to wear all day.
I do not have any trouble with these shorts falling down or stretching out. They’re about the most comfortable shorts I’ve ever owned. I have Joe’s Jeans bermuda-length denim shorts from years ago that always grew on me as I wore them, but these do not. Even so, I loved those to pieces. I still have them but find myself going to these mostly. Joe’s is known for stretching some, whereas DL1961 are known for not stretching out, but I wear the same size (29) in both brands.
The sandals have some cushion but nothing like a supportive orthopedic sandal. I don’t mind wearing them all day, but I do have to be careful because I don’t want to reignite my old plantar fasciitis, and I know flat shoes are bad for that. I don’t tend to wear any one shoe all day. My doc recommends switching them out often, but I could definitely wear these around the mall for a few hours without a problem. I hope that helps!
I almost always have a cardigan or jacket with me even in the summertime. Of course, like you said, the mornings and evenings can be chilly—but the inside of stores & restaurants too—the A/C is blasting so much of the time!!
I love this tote–of course, since for some reason I’ve been obsessed with stripes lately (and I thought it would never happen to me–I mean, really, they are only stripes!)
Hi Jo-Lynne, did you have to go up a half size in these sandals? I’m always an 8, but some of the reviews say to size up. Thanks.
Hi Jo-Lynne, Such a cute casual summer outfit — love it! Just wish there was a similar tank option in pink 🙁 Thanks for the suggestions for the Blooimingdale’s sale too!
Jo-Lynne, , for black threaded necklaces try J. Jill JJILL.com
Great outfit! Really cute!
I hoe to be comfortable in an outfit like this one day. Love the look and especially the draped cardigan but it wouldn’t look right with my already long clothes.
