Save, Spend, Splurge: Spring Handbag Roundup

Handbags are my love language. What can I say… it’s the one wardrobe item that always fits no matter how much weight you gain or lose, and it’s something you can use every day.

I’ve had a lot of questions about what handbag styles and colors are trending this spring, so I decided to do a roundup!

A woman’s choice of handbag says a lot about her so it’s definitely something to put some thought into, especially if you’re trying to level up your style game.

one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine

Today’s post will focus mostly on styles and colors that are trending this spring. I’m loving all the light neutrals like white, blush, beige, and taupe. The other thing that is big right now in handbags is bright colors like yellow and poppy red, but for some reason I gravitate to the more subtle tones. Straw and rattan bags are also a big trend this season.

Style-wise, oversized, slouchy bags are on their way out, and more structured bags are coming into vogue. I’m also seeing a lot of convertible bags that you can wear several ways, which is nice. I particularly like the styles with a top handle and optional crossbody strap. Mini bags are also trending, but I prefer a bag that can at least hold my wallet and a few daily essentials.

Save, Spend, Splurge: Spring Handbag Roundup

Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite bags right now. We all have different ideas of what a splurge or save item is, so I’m using a wide scale here and including some very high end bags as well as a group of bags under $100. Hopefully there’s a little something for everyone!

As always, I recommend trying to buy on sale or at least when a store is running an incentive like cash back or gift cards based on purchase amount. Right now Bloomingdale’s is currently running their Friends & Family Sale, and a lot of the big names are included in either the 25% off or the Double Points offer, so it’s a good time to make some of those bigger purchases you’ve been holding out on.

Other stores running big incentives right now are Macy’s (lowest prices of the season on Specials), Lord + Taylor (Friends & Family: an extra 30% off with code FRIENDS), JCPenney (Easter Sale: get 25% off $100 or more, or 20% off under $100), Saks (Friends & Family: 25% off select styles), and R Minkoff (Spend More, Save More: 25% off orders of $150+ with SPRING25 and 30% off orders of $300+ with code SPRING30).

For handbags under $100, I’m a huge fan of Sole Society because they make a nice looking bag that is on trend and usually looks more expensive than it is. That said, I tried to include some other brands as well.

SPEND: $100-$500

Tory Burch, R Minkoff, and Kate Spade are my favorite handbag brands in this price range, but there are a lot of other good ones out there. I included more in this category than in the other two because I figured this is probably the range most of us are interested in.

SPLURGE: $500+

If you’re into the luxury designers such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Burberry, here are some of my favorite styles. These are all on trend but also classic styles that will last many years.

I hope this was helpful or at least fun for you guys!

  1. “It always fits no matter how much weight you gain or lose”— love that theory!!  Lol.  So very true though!  Which is why accessory shopping is always fun!  I haven’t tried sole society yet but they look cute,  will definitely check them out!

  2. I do like these colors and see them going so we’ll with everything. I’m more in the save and spend categories… don’t think I’ve ever done a splurge.. that’s a little steep for me. Thanks for showing us theses great options.

  3. Thanks for a great post today. I always enjoy your save, spend and splurge posts. I am in need of an ‘everyday’ spring/summer handbag and typically aim for the save or spend price range. My everyday bag would be for grocery shopping, book club, misc errands, appointments and the ball fiield. I am 5’ 2” (short) and bags can overwhelm me. As a pear shaped body type I tend to look for a more structured bag. I am not sure if I should be looking for white or a light rose colored bag or a light taupe. This may be a great topic for your Facebook live tomorrow.

    1. I think it really depends on what goes best with your wardrobe – especially think of the shoes you normally wear. I recently bought a bag I LOVE but realize now that the color (or the yellowy-beige) doesn’t really work with the blush and grey shoes I tend to wear a lot. I don’t necessarily want my bag and shoes to match, but I want the neutral tones to compliment each other.

  4. Wow! What a great roundup! I love the neutrals this year as well! There really are some cute bags in all price ranges! You mentioned the larger slouchy bags are on their way out (I love those bags!) Do you think the backpack trend is sticking around?

    1. I like a big, slouchy bag too. Of course, at the end of the day, you should carry what you love. I’ll always prefer totes and hobos to other styles. I just like how accessible everything is. I do think backpacks are sticking around. Belt bags are popular too, but I just can’t get behind that trend.

  5. So many pretty bags!

I agree about Sole Society’s bags, great quality and price point. Banana Republic has had some nice bags too, that can be a good price when they run code sales with extra percentages off.

  6. Great post.  I love how you offer options for all price points.
Can you tell me where you found those suede slides? They are just my style and pulled together the outfit so well.

  7. I’m pretty sure that Kate Spade Molly will be my next bag. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for in the light fawn color. It’s not a bad price either, but I’ll definitely be waiting for the next promo. Thanks for sharing, I hadn’t seen it before now.

  8. Wow!! I see so many I want!!! Thank you for this post. I recently bought a metallic nylon bag that converts to a back pack for my trip to Az this month. I would love to get a Louis Vuitton someday hopefully soon..
    Blessings in all you do!

  9. Just purchased 2 beautiful Louis Vuitton handbags from LUXE/DH. Thank you for doing the Save, Spend, Splurge: Spring Handbag Roundup Post. I too am a handbag junkie, I will Splurge on classic pieces that I know I will enjoy for years and then save on “trendy” pieces that I will carry for a few months and donate. As always this was an excellent post. I enjoy your posts everyday, thank you for keeping it real. Some bloggers are fake and do not share their real life struggles, you know they have them but they keep them in the closet. You let it all hang out….we like that.

    1. Haha, let it all hang out… I suppose that is what I do. 🙂 🙂 I hope you love your new bags!!! Which ones did you get? I’ve been crushing on the Graceful.

  10. I appreciate the variety of price points and styles in this post. So many pretty bags!
Penney’s has a nice selection of handbags. I’ve bought the Liz Claiborne and Nicole brands in the past. The Liz pink crossbody is really cute.

  11. Some lovely bags in this post Jo Lynne. I was wondering if you have come across the De Mellier London bag brand? They have some lovely styles which would fall in your “spend” price range. They are a British brand but according to their website they have free shipping and returns to the USA.

  12. Fun post.  I love handbags too!  Not only do they always fit, they never hurt my feet!   I have scaled back my splurge bags in recent years.  It seems the luxury brands upped their prices dramatically starting several years ago. Luckily, I still use and enjoy most of the ones I own.  I bought a couple of Barrington bags over the past year and half and just can’t get used to the step down (or steps down) in feel.  They are nylon with really nice leather trim.  They are not cheap in price, but that nylon . . . I can’t get used to it.  Good for a tote for trips, etc, but not for a daily used bag.

I always enjoy Facebook live, though I usually catch it later.

  13. Love the linen shorts you posted on instagram. I don’t get instagram, so could you let us know where you bought them?  Great handbag post. I am not really a structure bag person, but some of these are really nice.  I am carrying a light beige backpack one right now and love it.  I don’t think backpacks are out yet.  However, I need to find a neutral that goes with dresses, so need to really shop your links. 🙂  I agree with what another person said……I love your blog because you keep it real.  Thanks for all your hard work.

  14. Great post!  I am not one to splurge on handbags because I like to change them often, and I like to have lots of them.  I like neutrals handbags,  but I also like bright colored ones.  I hope you had a great day!

  15. I really enjoy these save/spend/splurge posts. Thanks for doing the work to find a price point for any budget! I honestly love almost every bag you posted. Yikes. Fortunately, I still love my Kate Spade Jackson Street Miley that’s an ivory tone I bought last summer. It is so similar to the Nordstrom brand hobo you posted that I feel sure it is still considered “on trend”. I tend to get or use one bag per season. Changing them out all the time is too much work for me. I guess I’m a little lazy when it comes to handbags.
