Spring Layers to Wear Now & Later: Easy Outfit Ideas

Many thanks to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post! As always, all product selections, editorial direction, and opinions are my own.

Spring weather can be all over the place, which makes getting dressed a little tricky. Some days call for a light layer, while others feel almost warm enough for bare arms, and every now and then, you still need a winter coat. Having a few versatile pieces in rotation makes it much easier to pull together outfits that work throughout the day.

I photographed these outfits before leaving for St. Lucia, and they’re exactly the kind of easy, polished looks I’ll be reaching for once I’m back home. Today I’m sharing a few spring outfits from Nordstrom built around some great seasonal staples, transitional shoes, and lightweight layers you can wear now and later in the season.

Even better, Nordstrom is currently running one of their 10-Point Nordy Club Cardmember Exclusive events. Earn 10 points per dollar (that’s $20 for every $200 you spend) when you use your Nordstrom card online or in stores March 4–8. That makes this a great time to pick up a few pieces for the season ahead.

If you need some shopping inspiration, you can browse my favorites in my NEW Nordstrom Storefront!

I styled this first look around the Skyrise Patch Pocket Wide Leg Pants from Wit & Wisdom in the olive. They’re made from a soft stretch twill with elastic inside the waistband, so they move with you and feel great throughout the day. They have a high waist and a full-length slim wide-leg silhouette that’s super flattering, and the front welt-patch pockets give them that on-trend utility vibe.

My perforated slingback pumps elevate the look and add a modern touch, but Mary Janes or low-profile sneakers would work just as well if you want something more casual.

I topped it all off with a white tank and an updated denim jacket with a zip front. This jacket sold out quickly, so I’m linking a very similar version from last year that I also own—and it’s currently 35% off. It’s a really nice update to a classic denim jacket and feels super lightweight because it’s made from 100% lyocell (basically a soft, drapey rayon) rather than traditional denim.

To finish the look, I added some sculptural polished silver hoops and mixed metal toggle pendant on a chunky chain.

My next look flips the formula, putting wide-leg blue jeans on the bottom and a light beige jacket layered over a white tee on top. These FRAME Modern Pocket Wide Leg Jeans have a casual-chic light wash and front patch pockets that give them a modern, slightly elevated boho vibe.

The slim wide-leg silhouette, subtle texture, and utility-inspired pockets all work together in a really fresh way. In fact, they read more like a relaxed flare than a true wide leg, which happens to be my preferred silhouette.

They’re super soft, lightweight, and comfortable, and the 31-inch inseam works perfectly with a low heel or sneakers. I paired them with the same camel-colored perforated slingbacks and added a matching belt and bag to keep the look cohesive.

On top, I kept it simple with a white tee layered under the Splendid Lounge Jacket in a pretty off-white shade called Moonstone. It’s designed to feel like your favorite sweats but with the classic look of denim. I especially love the raglan shoulders and sleeves—they give it a softer, more relaxed feel and make it easy to layer.

It’s a nice shorter length, but not cropped, and the drawstring waist with elastic in the back adds just enough shape so it hangs really nicely. This jacket is on the pricier side, but I can already tell it’s going to be a workhorse in my spring wardrobe.

I love a crisp, clean pair of white jeans in the springtime, so for this next look, I styled the KUT from the Kloth Kelsey with a pretty pink split neck tee and a pair of neutral metallic espadrille sandals.

These jeans have an ankle-length kick-flare silhouette with a raw hem, which makes them perfect for pairing with sandals or sneakers, depending on whether you want to dress them up or down. They’re also a nice, stretchy fabric, and the white denim isn’t at all see-through.

And I think this pink top is so pretty for spring. I love the soft, slubbed organic-cotton fabric, and the split neckline with seaming details. The cap sleeves are flattering, and it has a relaxed fit that you can wear out or give it a front tuck for a little extra style.

These FRANKIE4 espadrille sandals give me some extra height, but they’re still comfortable and easy to walk in—especially if you need a pair of sandals for sightseeing or have finicky feet.

And because I always love the combination of white denim with a blue jean jacket, I topped this look off with the zip-front denim jacket again. The Cloth & Stone shacket I mentioned above would also totally work with this look—and you can’t beat that sale price.

Finally, for those who live in areas where winter likes to hang on a little longer, this Caslon Stripe Relaxed Fit Sweater is cozy enough for those blustery March days, but the red and pink stripes feel bright and perfect for the season.

Caslon Cotton Parka with Removable Hood (S) // Caslon Stripe Relaxed Fit Sweater (S) // FRAME The Pixie Arrow High Waist Bootcut Jeans (30P) // Franco Sarto Tinsley Mary Jane Flats (8.5) similar beaded necklace // similar tote // Madewell cuff

I paired it with my FRAME Pixie Arrow bootcut jeans, which are made from a slightly more rigid denim, and finished the look with woven Mary Jane flats with a trendy square toe. The shoes keep the outfit feeling seasonal, but of course, if you need something warmer, boots or sneakers are always an option.

Trend alert: Woven materials are everywhere this spring, and square-toe Mary Janes are also having a moment, so this pair gives you a two-for-one trend update that’s an easy way to refresh your everyday looks this season.

And when you need a jacket for unpredictable spring weather, this Caslon Cotton Parka is a great option. It has a classic look with roomy pockets and a removable hood, and it takes a cue from the cropped trench styles that are trending right now. Details like the inverted back pleat and snap storm placket give it a little extra polish.

I’m still enjoying the sunshine in St. Lucia for a few more days, but these are exactly the kinds of outfits I’ll be reaching for once I’m back home. I hope these looks give you a little inspiration for your own spring outfits!

And don’t forget, Nordy Club cardmembers can earn 10 points per dollar through March 8, so it’s a great time to stock up on basics or add a new statement piece to update your wardrobe.

  1. I love the woven Mary Jane’s but would prefer some support in a flat. Have you come across any similar with arch support?

    1. I would love the arch support ones also and maybe alittle bit of heel since petite. Thanks!!

  2. Have you ever done a post on your gorgeous eye makeup? I zoomed in a photo to see the silver earrings and noticed your gorgeous face! I love your eye make up, especially the light eyeshadow. What are you using? Oh and all the clothes are great too!

  3. Have you looked at the weather for next week? Next weekend looks a little iffy, but the end of next week looks beautiful! Spring weather can be a roller coaster for sure!

  4. Ahh St Lucia sounds wonderful – love to see some more photos of your stay there. Question – I have heard that jeans have lost favor and more and more leisure type pants are the way to go. Since jeans can be pricey, do you think budget conscious gals like me should back off on purchasing now?

  5. I need to look back and get the link for the toggle ball necklace. I first saw it in your jewelry post and really like it. There is no link to it in this post when you mention it with the silver earrings. No problem. I can look back. It’s just so pretty and I love that you recommend it. I see some of my older items that isn’t real gold etc is tarnished and ready to go. Enjoy your last days….. sounds wonderful. Oh by the way. I got an email from Z Supply for resort wear. You might want to look for your Florida trip. Nothing real bright. I’m waiting now for two tees from there Cyndi recommended. Short sleeve in white and black. Anything I’ve had from this company has been good.

  6. I love the tan belt – it doesn’t look like the Treasure and Bond belt linked so if you get a chance to check that (no rush!) please let me know. Thanks!

  7. Some of the links, like the Wit&Wisdom pants and Splendid jacket, in your Nordstrom storefront aren’t linking to the correct items

  8. I’m eyeing the Caslon Parka. Is it lined? I prefer that for extra warmth and ease of putting it on over tops and sweaters.

  9. I live just south of Houston and we’re already in the 80’s. I’m hoping for some more cools days, but today was cropped white pants and a nice tee!

  10. I want the tan belt. Cassie–you said you found it? Jo-Lynne–so the one linked is different? I see the western one–is there also a different tan one? Also, I don’t see sizing for the belt–if a 30 jean works–is that a medium in this particular belt? I enjoyed this post and would wear almost everything here(:

      1. Thanks on the belt, however, I can cut and paste your link to get the belt but the way msg is, I can’t just tap it. I want to make sure u get credit, let me know! Thanks!

  11. Hello! What are your thoughts on the Paige Ari Wide Leg vs the Wit & Wisdom with fit and structure? You shared you are keeping the Paige Ari. Do you feel like they fill well and will be on repeat wear?
