Spring & Summer Try-Ons: Dresses, Denim, Shorts & More

Happy Friday, friends! I have a bunch of new try-ons to share with you today, including quite a few dresses, plus some new denim, shorts, tops, and a few new pairs of shoes. Let’s get right to it!

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5” and typically wear small or medium in tops, 30 in jeans and pants, and medium or size 10 in dresses. For shoes, I’m usually an 8.5, but often size down to an 8 in slides. I often fall between sizes, so fit notes matter. Gifted items are marked c/o; everything else was purchased by me.

As usual, I will provide measurements and fabric content on each item when I can find it, and I’ll share whether I plan to keep it or not. Just remember, even when I decide not to keep something, it doesn’t mean it isn’t worth checking out. I just may not need it, or it may not work for my body type or lifestyle.

Wedding Guest Dresses

I have a wedding to attend next month, and the dress code is semi-formal/cocktail. That typically calls for something dressier than what I might wear to church or work, but not floor-length formal either. There are lots of pretty flowy midi dresses out right now that would hit that sweet spot, but I tend to look better with a little more structure, so I’ve ordered a few sheath styles to try.

Donna Karan New York Metallic Floral Jacquard Sheath Dress

at Macy’s, Nordstrom & Bloomingdale’s // similar heels

PRODUCT DETAILS: Make an elegant statement in this shimmering floral-jacquard sheath dress that’s ready for your next occasion.

  • Measurements: 41″ length
  • Material: 87% polyester, 12% metallic fibers, 1% spandex
  • Care: Dry clean

MY THOUGHTS: The fabric on this one is gorgeous in person, although I know it’s not my best color palette. I thought the faux wrap detail was fun and might be more flattering than it turned out to be. Also, I’m not sure why the neckline looks more drapey on me when all of the website photos show it as a square neckline.

I tried to make it work, styling it with taupe patent strappy heels, a metallic wrap, and a coordinating bag. I thought it might be a contender, but it didn’t pass the daughter test, ha!

When I wore it downstairs for a second opinion, Becca immediately confirmed my suspicions: the faux wrap makes me look bigger than I am, so this one is a hard pass.

It’s a shame because I feel like it’s exactly the level of formality I’m looking for, and I like that it feels modest without being frumpy. Oh well, moving on!

VERDICT: This one went back.

Tuileries Vine Stretch Jacquard Romy Midi Dress

at Tuckernuck (10) // similar heels

PRODUCT DETAILS: The Romy Midi Dress is crafted from chic jacquard and designed to hug you in all the right places. Featuring a wide scoop neckline, a flattering fitted mini silhouette, and thick straps, it’s equal parts polished and playful.

  • Material: 6% Polyester 64% Nylon
  • Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

MY THOUGHTS: I was drawn to this one for the unique color and the tone-on-tone jacquard pattern. The shoulder strap and neckline design is really pretty, and I thought it might be a flattering choice, even though the color is a little outside my norm.

Sadly, the size 10 is too small, and the 12 is no longer available. I’m also short-waisted, and the straps would need to be taken up a smidge. I don’t think that would be easy, though, given the way they widen at the seam.

VERDICT: This one is going back, as well.

Chain Detail Crepe Dress in Orchid Flower

40% off at WHBM (10) // similar heels

PRODUCT DETAILS: This sheath dress features a unique chain detail on the straps.

  • Measurements: 42” length.
  • Material: 96% Polyester, 4% Spandex
  • Care: Machine wash cold

MY THOUGHTS: This is another one that almost works, but not quite. The color is beautiful, although maybe a little more attention-grabbing than I want for my son’s best friend’s wedding.

I do feel like it’s the most flattering so far, but sadly, the bodice is cut a little oddly and it really gapes. It just doesn’t lay flat against my chest, so when I move around, it feels way too exposed. I don’t know if there’s a tailoring trick that would help, but even so, it’s probably more low-cut than what I want for this event.

Petite Chain Detail Crepe Dress in Winter Night

40% off at WHBM (12 Petite) // similar heels

PRODUCT DETAILS: This sheath dress features a unique chain detail on the straps.

  • Measurements: 38 7/8” length.
  • Material: 96% Polyester, 4% Spandex
  • Care: Machine wash cold

MY THOUGHTS: This one is the same dress as above, but in the petite version, which definitely fits better in the bodice, and I think I like the shorter length too. Unfortunately, it does the same thing in the chest area. My daughter confirmed that it just isn’t the message I want to send at this event, haha!

VERDICT: They both went back.

Cap Sleeve Draped Sheath Dress

30% off at WHBM (10 Petite) // similar heels

PRODUCT DETAILS: This sheath dress can be worn for special occasions or a day at the office.

  • Measurements: 38 5/8″ length.
  • Material: 100% Polyester
  • Care: Machine wash cold

MY THOUGHTS: Okay, so this one could definitely work! I love the draped neckline and ruching, but it’s a size too small, and sadly, it’s sold out. I really need the 12 Petite. I ordered that size in the Chain Detail Crepe Dress, so I think it must have already been gone when I placed this order.

I do have to make one caveat: I hate the way it’s cut around the armhole. Dresses that do this always bug me, and I expect sizing up would make it even worse. So it’s probably all for the best that I can’t get it, but it’s the closest I’ve found so far that checks the boxes.

VERDICT: I’m actually holding onto this one for a bit, just in case my sizing shifts a little with some of the lifestyle changes I’m making. But I’m definitely still looking!

Mac Duggal Brocade Sleeveless Square Neck Midi Dress in Blue Multi

at Nordstrom (10) // similar heels

PRODUCT DETAILS: Floral brocade midi dress with a square neckline and tailored silhouette, finished with a back vent slit for ease and movement.

  • Measurements: 51″ length.
  • Material: Brocade fabric (100% polyester)
  • Care: Dry clean.

MY THOUGHTS: I’m not sure why I seem to be drawn to brocade, but here’s another one! This might be a contender. I feel like the fit is really good, but I’m not sure how I feel about the longer length. I suppose it could be shortened if it fit perfectly everywhere else.

It definitely needs to be taken up a bit in the straps, but these are designed in such a way that I think that’s doable. The other thing holding me back is I’m not sure I love the color palette. It’s fine, but I do think I look better in bolder colors.

VERDICT: I’m still looking, but I’m going to hold onto this one for a bit. It’s a brand I may want to explore more, because it seems to fit me pretty well.

Casual Dresses

Okay, moving on to some more casual styles…

Tommy Bahama Sunset Harbor Dress

at Tommy Bahama (M) // Tuckernuck slides c/o (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This easy dress is elevated by gorgeous inset lace along the hem and sleeves so you can channel your charm wherever you roam.

  • Measurements: 35″ from shoulder to hem.
  • Material: 100% cotton.
  • Care: Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low.

MY THOUGHTS: I’ve actually had this one since before my Florida trip! It arrived the day before we left, and I didn’t have time to try it on. It’s nice quality and a pretty design, but I feel like it kind of overwhelms me. I definitely prefer dresses with a little more structure.

VERDICT: I sent this back.

Tommy Bahama Darcy Noble Pineapple Dress

at Tommy Bahama (M) // Vince Piper (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: The body-skimming dress silhouette you love returns in a new printed style that features patch pockets and elevated crochet trim.

  • Measurements: 35″ from shoulder to hem.
  • Material: 85% cotton, 12% polyester, 3% spandex.
  • Care: Hand wash cold with like colors, hang to dry.

MY THOUGHTS: I definitely feel like this style is more flattering, and I prefer the sleeveless design, but the print is a bit much for me. I don’t know, it’s okay, but I feel like it’s something I’d only wear on vacation, if that makes sense.

VERDICT: I have a lot of dresses right now, and while this is a nice option, it doesn’t quite excite me, so I’m sending it back.

Tommy Bahama Darcy Charming Cabanas Sheath Dress

at Tommy Bahama (M) // TKEES Square Toe Lily (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Exceptional tailoring and a powerful V-neckline set a sophisticated tone in this artful, printed sheath dress.

  • Measurements: 35″ from shoulder to hem.
  • Material: 92% TENCEL™ Modal, 6% nylon, 2% spandex.
  • Care: Machine wash cold with like colors on gentle, inside out, line dry.

MY THOUGHTS: This is the same dress as the solid black Darcy that I love so much, and for whatever reason, this print feels more “me” than the one above, even though it’s rather bold. I like the darker background, and it doesn’t feel quite as tropical.

Sadly, as the reviews suggest, it runs smaller than the black one, and it feels a tad snug on me. It’s not a deal breaker, and I think the print is a little distracting from that issue, but the large would probably be more comfortable.

VERDICT: Debating. I may order the large to compare before I decide.

Ming Wang Sleeveless Sheath Knit Dress in Serene

at Nordstrom (M) // Dolce Vita Galae (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Effortless elegance meets sophisticated style with this pullover knit dress. Falling right at the knees, this dress is figure flattering and appropriate for any occasion.

  • Measurements:
  • Material: 90% Acrylic, 10% Polyester
  • Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

MY THOUGHTS: I have the black version of this dress, and I love it, so when I saw this turquoise color, I was intrigued. Again, I tend to prefer darker colors, but this is really pretty for summer. I just can’t decide if I’d wear it dressed up or down.

I was actually considering it for the wedding when I ordered it, but in person, I just don’t think it’s dressy enough. In fact, it’s kind of cute dressed down with flat thong sandals and a woven bag

VERDICT: Debating. I don’t know if I really need this… It could be nice to have for church or summer dinners out, but it’s pretty spendy for something I’m not sure I need.

Shorts, Tops & Sandals

Next up, I have a mix of shorts, tops, and sandals that have come in lately, along with a chic swim coverup and a fun summery clutch!

Madewell The Perfect Vintage Mid-Length Jean Short

c/o Madewell (30) // Madewell The Essential Tank (L) // Madewell Iggy Thong (8) // stretch bracelets

PRODUCT DETAILS: The cut: these mid-length shorts feature a high waist and curve-enhancing back. The result? A relaxed, vintage-inspired fit that flatters from every angle.

  • Measurements: 10 1/2″ rise, 5″ inseam.
  • Material: 99% cotton/1% elastane.
  • Care: Machine wash.

MY THOUGHTS: So you can probably tell by the look on my face I’m not thrilled with these shots. I will never understand sizing. I can still (barely, ha!) fit into the size 29 in the Jules jeans and the Airy Wide Leg style, but these size 30 shorts are tight. Bah humbug.

Also, I take umbrage with that rise measurement. There is no way these are a 10.5″ rise. They feel much higher than that to me. I do like the wash and the general styling, and the 5″ inseam is right in my sweet spot. But I just can’t quite get excited about these.

VERDICT: I suppose I could try sizing up, but I already have the KUT from the Kloth Jane and the Tommy Bahama pair, plus my old Gap Factory pair from last year, so I think I’m set when it comes to denim shorts.

Madewell The Essential Tank in Utility Rib in White

c/o Madewell (L) // Madewell The Perfect Vintage Shorts (30) // Madewell Iggy Thong (8) // stretch bracelets

PRODUCT DETAILS: This high-neck tank is the ultimate summer wardrobe essential. It features a flattering on-body fit and a center back seam, and pairs perfectly with your favorite denim.

  • Measurements: 22 3/4″ length.
  • Material: 92% cotton/8% elastane.
  • Care: Machine wash.

MY THOUGHTS: This tank is a really nice option, and it’s right on trend with the higher neck and slightly cut-in armholes. I appreciate that it’s still bra-friendly.

VERDICT: I prefer a shorter length and more open neckline, so I doubt I’ll keep it. Still a good basic tank, though, if it’s what you’re looking for!

J.Crew Regular Weave Rectangular Bag Contrast in red Purple Green Multi

c/o J.Crew // Splendid Lounge Shorts (M) // Splendid Asher (8) // Bryan Anthony’s MOM necklace & Our Light necklace (25% off)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This handwoven straw clutch fits all of your event essentials (keys, lipstick, phone, credit cards) and adds a subtle pop of color to any look. P.S. Each bag is woven by hand, so no two are exactly alike.

MY THOUGHTS: This clutch is so cute! I love the subtle pop of color, and it’s just the perfect size for dinner or really anywhere you can get away with a small bag.

STYLE TIP: Clutches for everyday use are a big trend this spring, and I think they’re a fun way to make a casual outfit feel a little more polished and intentional.

VERDICT: Keeping this, for sure.

J.Crew Tropez Short in Linen in Black

at J.Crew (M) // Anthro Muscle Tank (L) // Madewell Iggy Thong (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This ultra-easy style comes with a comfy smocked waist, so you can wear it higher or lower on your hips. Plus, it’s crafted from our lightweight, breathable 100 percent linen fabric that’s guaranteed to keep you looking and feeling cool.

  • Measurements: 12 1/2″ Front Rise; 3″ Inseam.
  • Material: 100% Linen.
  • Care: Machine wash.

MY THOUGHTS: I love the design of these linen shorts. They have a wide elasticized waistband, but it’s not gathered, so there isn’t all that extra fabric that usually comes with an elasticized design. They’re a nice length, good quality, and very comfortable.

The rise is very high, though, and I’m really in between sizes. The medium (above) looks too big, and the small (below) looks better but feels too small.

I also need to figure out what to wear with them. This top doesn’t do much for me, and the overall look feels very boxy and square.

VERDICT: Debating. I’d really like to make one of these work for me.

PAIGE Cargo Shorts in Rich Chocolate

at EVEREVE & Anthropologie (29) // J.Crew Sweater Tank (M) // Steve Madden Rickyy (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Add these flattering shorts by Paige to your warm-weather rotation, finished in soft cotton-blend twill with a double-button closure and high-rise fit.

  • Measurements: 11″ Front Rise, 3 1/2″ Inseam, 26″ Leg Opening
  • Material: 57% Cotton, 34% Rayon, 6% Lycra Elasterell-P, 3% Lycra, Spandex Twill
  • Care: Machine wash cold, hang to dry

MY THOUGHTS: I have these in olive, in the size 30. They’ve always felt a bit big, although I do appreciate the comfort level! So when these were part of the Anthro sale, I grabbed the 29 to compare sizing, and because I like this chocolate color.

VERDICT: Similar to the linen Tropez shorts, I feel like I’m smack dab in between sizes. These are just a smidge too small, and I can’t stand pulling and tugging at tight shorts, so I decided to send these back.

By Anthropologie Linen Skort in Dried Herb

at Anthropologie (M) // Anthro Muscle Tank (L) //

PRODUCT DETAILS: Cut from breathable, lightweight linen, this pull-on skort features a layered, wrap-front silhouette for a polished yet relaxed look. The functional design includes an elasticized waistband and hidden shorts for all-day comfort.

  • Material: 100% Linen
  • Care: Machine wash

MY THOUGHTS: I have such mixed feelings on this. It’s such a fun concept, and I love that green color. But much like shorts, or maybe even more so than shorts, it just creates a big box on the boxiest part of my body.

VERDICT: Not for me, but super cute. Someone should order this!

J.Crew Crochet Sweater Tank in White

at J.Crew (M) // PAIGE Cargo Shorts (29) // Steve Madden Rickyy (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This sleeveless sweater has intricate crochet stitching up the sides and on the straps for a touch of unexpected texture. With a clean, straight neckline that dips a little in the back, it’s versatile, breathable and—dare we say—a little sexy.

  • Material: 100% cotton crochet.
  • Care: Machine wash.

MY THOUGHTS: This sweater has a really nice design. I like the crochet stitching on the sides and the squared-off neckline, front and back. But the fit is a little weird on me. It’s a bit too snug at the bottom, and the straps are hard to wear with a regular bra. I also couldn’t reach into the back to fix them.

VERDICT: Too much work for me. But very cute, if it’s your thing.

J.Crew Scallop-Trim Crochet Mini in Antique White

50% off at J.Crew c/o (L) // J.Crew swimsuit (10) // TKEES Square Toe Lily (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: This mini dress has intricate embroidery details, an airy open knit texture and scalloped trims. Plus, it’s crafted from 100 percent cotton and pairs perfectly with your favorite bikini.

  • Material: 100% cotton.
  • Care: Machine wash.

MY THOUGHTS: I absolutely love this! It’s like a really nice upgrade to the Amazon one I have and wear so much. It has such nice shaping through the waist, and the scalloped hem and sleeve cuffs are a really nice touch. So glad I thought to order the large. It just fits.

VERDICT: Keeping! (Fit tip: Size up!)

Madewell The Iggy Thong Sandal

25% off at Madewell c/o (8) Madewell The Perfect Vintage Shorts c/o (30) // Madewell The Essential Tank (L) c/o

PRODUCT DETAILS: Crafted from leather, this thong sandal features a rounded toe and padded footbed for added comfort. The durable rubber sole offers just enough grip, while the minimalist design keeps things understated and effortless.

MY THOUGHTS: I love these! They’re a bit nicer than your typical plastic flip flop, and they have a padded footbed. The white strap on the black base is kind of a fun contrast, and I find myself reaching for these a lot lately!

VERDICT: Definitely keeping.

Steve Madden Rickyy Sandal Dark Brown

c/o DSW c/o (8) // PAIGE Cargo Shorts (29) // J.Crew Sweater Tank (M)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Step out with the Rickyy sandal from Steve Madden, a sleek and modern take on the classic flip-flop silhouette. Featuring a square open toe and studded detailing along the sole, this pair adds a subtle edge to your everyday looks, whether you’re running errands, heading to work, or meeting friends for a night out.

MY THOUGHTS: These are really fun, too. I love the square toe and the studded detailing. It adds a bit of edge to my simple outfits.

VERDICT: Keeping these, too!

Steve Madden Hadyn Crochet Raffia

c/o DSW (8) // Anthropologie skort (M) // Anthro tank (L)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Look trendy and comfortable in the Hayden sandal by Steve Madden. Cut-out details create an edgy appeal to the leather sandal, completed by a square open toe.

MY THOUGHTS: One more pair! I think the raffia strap is so pretty, and they’re just a nice light, summery sandal you can easily dress up or down.

VERDICT: Keeping these.

Athleta Airy Cotton Terry Shortie in Bright White

at Athleta (M) // Athleta Getaway Linen Tank (M)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Lightweight layering from swim to studio to street. Soft, breathable cotton terry with an airy, lightweight drape.

  • Measurements: Inseam: 3″
  • Material: 100% Cotton
  • Care: Machine wash, tumble dry

MY THOUGHTS: These are so comfy and breathable, really nice for a hang-out-at-home short that still feels cute. Not the most flattering cut for me, but very comfortable.

Athleta Getaway Linen Tank in Cacti

at Athleta (M) // Athleta shorts (M)

PRODUCT DETAILS: For your workday commute and weekend travels, from meetings to meetups. Breezy linen meets flowy TENCEL™ in this easy-to-live-in blend.

  • Measurements: Body length: 21 5/8”
  • Material: 55% Linen/45% TENCEL™ Modal
  • Care: Machine wash, tumble dry

MY THOUGHTS: I already have this in black and teal, so when I saw it on sale, I ordered this olive. Love this light shade for spring/summer. Pairs nicely with white or black shorts.

VERDICT: Keeping!

Denim & Pants

To wrap up, I have a couple pairs of jeans and a pair of easy everyday/travel pants to share with you!

PAIGE Anessa 31 Inch Wide Leg Jean Vintage Seaglass

c/o PAIGE (30) // similar top // Steve Madden Tracie c/o (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Braided detailing along the pocket edges adds a subtle handcrafted touch, elevating the classic Anessa high-rise wide leg silhouette with a 31″ inseam.

  • Measurements: Rise: 11 5/8″, inseam: 31″, leg Opening: 22 1/2″
  • Material: 98% Cotton, 2% Elastane
  • Care: Machine wash cold, hang to dry.

MY THOUGHTS: I love this pale teal version of the PAIGE Anessa, one of the most flattering wide-leg fits. It also has a fun braided detail along the pockets. The size 30 is a bit snug on me in the waist. I’m not sure if it’s this colorway or just my ever-changing body.

VERDICT: Holding onto these for a bit and will try them again in a few days… I may order the 31 to compare.

MOTHER The Kick It in Melt In Your Mouth

at MOTHER Denim c/o (30) // similar top // Sam Edelman Elissa (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: A high-rise straight leg jean with a zip fly, 32-inch inseam and a clean hem. Made from stretch denim, Melt In Your Mouth is a light blue with fading throughout.

  • Measurements: 32″ inseam; 17 1/2″ leg opening; 10 1/2″ front rise
  • Material: 81% Cotton 11% Lyocell 6% Polyester 2% Elastane
  • Care: Machine wash, tumble dry

MY THOUGHTS: MY THOUGHTS: This is a new super light wash of the MOTHER Kick It. I absolutely love these. The light wash is very of the moment, and they’re so flattering. Anything that makes me feel this good at this point in my life is a win for me!

The only thing is, they’re super long, so I have to wear my highest 3″ heels with them or have them hemmed. I kind of like them with the heels, though! It’s a nice contrast against the casual wash.

VERDICT: Keeipng!

Ruti The On The Loose Work Pants in Walnut

at Ruti c/o (10) // Lilla P Tank (M) // Loeffler Randall Flip Flops (8)

PRODUCT DETAILS: Ruti’s On The Loose Work Pants are laid-back chic, uber comfortable and endlessly versatile. The ultra-flattering barrel leg design make for our favorite pant silhouette. It’s a barrel fit that flatters every one.

  • Measurements: lnseam: 26 3/4″, rise: 10 3/4″
  • Material: 78% Nylon, 22% Spandex
  • Care: Machine wash cold, hang to dry.

MY THOUGHTS: Finally, the viral Ruti pants came out in a few new washes, and I pre-ordered this Walnut shade. I love it for summer, since my black pair feels a little heavy this time of year. I also ordered these in the 10 because my size 8 in the black pair is feeling snug.

VERDICT: Keeping these, too!

That’s it for today’s try-on haul! As always, let me know if you have questions about sizing, fit, or styling—I’m happy to help. And tell me… what would you keep?

  1. Those chain-strap dresses were gorgeous, but I can appreciate your thoughts on why they just didn’t work for you, and that’s something I’m trying to be better about myself when trying things on. I do think that bright blue draped sheath from WHBM was the winner – as I was scrolling down to see the full picture, “Oh YES” was the thought that came to mind. Great color on you and the fit was very flattering, and while it’s bright, it doesn’t scream – I think because the color works so well with your coloring, if that makes sense. The brocade one you’re contemplating is a no-go IMO – while it’s a lovely print, it washes you out and it’s too long.

    1. I’m with Jen. I think the Winter Night color of the WHBM dress was the best win color-wise, though yes I can see you being a bit more self aware because that dress shows a bit much in the front. Too bad you returned it – a tailor could have added a detail in the front to fill in the neckline. My tailor does that all the time. I also agree, you look better in darker colors and the brocade one didn’t really do you any justice.

  2. Mac Dougall makes beautiful dresses and I really like the blue/cream color palate on you.
The Ming Wang dress in the aqua/turquoise is also flattering on you. Especially like those colors for a spring/summer wedding.,

Mother Kick-It jeans look great and I might order that wash.

  3. Sorry you had so many near misses in this batch. 🙁 I feel like I’ve been doing lots of returning lately too. I am trying to be very picky about the items I keep so I don’t end up with lots of hardly worn things at the end of the season. The Steve Madden sandals are so cute but the two reviews on DSW are terrible. Since you are planning to keep them I assume you disagree and find them comfortable? Lastly, I also ordered the Ruti pants in walnut. I am really torn on keeping them due to the color. I am tempted to exchange them for the plume color which I feel might be easier to match with tops. Do you mind sharing thoughts on tops that would go well with the walnut color other than basic black or white? Thanks!

  4. Always appreciate these try ons and the Mac Duggal dress was already in my cart to try for an upcoming wedding so it was fun to see you try it. Question though, is there a link to the white tee you are wearing with the J Crew clutch and Splendid shorts?

  5. Love your try-on hauls. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into them. Do you have a link for the cute white tee you are wearing in the pic with the J Crew regular weave rectangular bag? Thanks!

  6. I’ll be watching to see how you style the Kick It light wash pair. That’s one of the Mother styles that fit me well but not sure if I’d get my cost per wear out of that super light wash. Would I wear it year round or only in the summer? Really cute on you though!

  7. The Mac Duggal Brocade Sleeveless Square Neck Midi Dress in Blue Multi looks great on you. Its bright but doesn’t scream. Shorten it if you want (I probably would) or leave it long. Either way its perfect IMO.

  8. I love the WHBM dress! The color is gorgeous on you 😍
If not that particular dress, I would suggest something similar. Real talk: Your 20-something son doesn’t want to hear that his mom looks hot😉 Personally, I wouldn’t show any cleavage or much skin at all.

Those Tropez shorts….how I want to love them. I talked myself into two pair last spring. It was early spring and I told myself that I just needed to get used to seeing myself in shorts again and that they would be so cute with the right top. Hahaha…I absolutely hated every look I tried with them. Fitted tops made them look really short and wide while looser tops just created a shapeless blob.
I’ll look forward to seeing want you come up with. I finally donated mine but I would rebuy if I could find a look that worked.

    1. Haha! Truth. I definitely do not want cleavage, but showing a little skin is typically more flattering, so I’m looking for the unicorn that walks the line. It gets harder with age, for sure.

Interesting your experience with the shorts. I definitely need to play with them a bit.

  9. Good luck finding the perfect dress to wear to the wedding! Your facial expression does say it all in some of the pictures. You may already know this, but when I was much younger, one of my uncles worked in a factory that made blue jeans. He told us on multiple occasions how they get a huge stack that will be cut at the same time, which means that some of them will shift, causing the sizing to be off. Even with today’s technology, I suspect a very similar thing happens now. The dark brown thong sandals are so nice. Oh how I wish I found them to be comfortable. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!

  10. Wow thanks for this extensive try on ! I’m ordering the jcrew coverup. It’s so cute on you. I’m debating whether to bite on the ruti pants. They’re pricey but would be great for so many things. I think you should keep exploring Mac Duggal and also Sachin and Babi for dresses. And I totally agree with you about the armhole cut of some dresses. Ridiculous !

    1. Loved a long Sachin and Babi dress I tried on for my daughter’s wedding. Very nice quality. On my radar for any future needs!

  11. I think the cream and blue brocade dress looks great on you. It would be great for the wedding! Shorten it if you like, but even longer, it looks really nice. Both of the lighter color jeans look good on you, and the walnut Ruti pants are very flattering.

  12. I’m 60 something. My legs have gotten veiny. I actually love midi dresses with my legs..they are slender. I would love to wear shorter dresses but so self conscious. Just wondering..are your legs that great looking or do you have a recommendation for the leg blurring “make-up I’ve seen lately?

    1. I totally get this. I’m 53, and I’ve definitely started noticing changes in my legs too. I have some veins and some of that crepey, dimpled skin. I feel like photos can really exaggerate texture and make everything look more noticeable than it does in real life, so we do a little light skin smoothing/editing on blog photos. But overall, they really aren’t too bad right now. I imagine it will probably only get more noticeable over the next few years, which is just part of aging, I guess.

As for leg-blurring makeup, I’ve tried a couple, but I always feel like they look a little too obvious so I don’t use it. I do think self-tanner helps a lot, though. But truly, I think we’re all harder on ourselves than anyone else is. If you love shorter dresses, I say wear them. Slender legs are lovely, and most of us are far more aware of our own imperfections than anyone else is.

  13. I’d love some dark brown thong sandals that are real leather and really comfortable! I’ve been sending stuff back alot lately too–starts to feel like a part-time job–heh heh, but I’m not keeping stuff unless I know I really like it and I will really wear it. I hate how the models look so great in things and then they don’t look quite the same on me.

  14. I love how you analyze a piece of clothing! The WHBM dress color is great on you. I love the brocade dress for something different and more modern. I also liked the other blue dress that you bought for the wedding but now may dress it down. It fits you beautifully and I think it is dressy enough for a wedding! You have great legs and arms for sleeveless and shorter shorts. You are lucky! Ugg! I hate my legs and arms. I can’t wait to see which dress you actually wear because you are always pick the right one and you always look great!
