3 Easy Styling Tips to Update a Jeans-and-Sweater Outfit

I pretty much live in jeans and sweaters, especially during the colder months. It’s comfortable and easy, but after a while, it can start to feel a little flat or uninspired. The good news is, it doesn’t take much to make this simple outfit formula feel more current and complete.

How to Style a Jeans and Sweater Outfit So It Feels Current

Today I’m sharing three easy styling tips you can use to update your jeans-and-sweater outfits. These are small tweaks that make a noticeable difference, even when you’re still just pulling on the same everyday basics.

1. Add Interest at the Neckline

One of my favorite little styling tricks lately is wearing a short-sleeve t-shirt backwards under a crewneck sweater. It sounds strange, but it works surprisingly well. The higher neckline in front peeks out just enough to add an extra layer of interest without adding bulk.

That subtle white tee makes the sweater feel more styled and intentional. It’s a small detail, but it keeps the outfit from feeling one-note.

Style tip: A thin, broken-in tee works best here—nothing stiff or oversized. I like the Gap Factory Favorite Crewneck T-Shirt for this. Also, I’ve been asked if wearing a t-shirt backwards is uncomfortable. It can feel a little strange at first, but once everything is adjusted and you’ve got the sweater on, it doesn’t bother me at all. After a few minutes, I don’t even notice it.

2. Choose a Longer, More Relaxed Coat

Another detail that really updates this outfit is the coat. Longer lengths and more relaxed fits feel much more current right now than shorter or more fitted styles, and they instantly elevate a casual base like jeans and a sweater.

I recently purchased the Chiara Topcoat from J.Crew (I managed to grab it while it was 30% off!). It has the perfect longer length and an easy, relaxed fit, and I love the thoughtful details like the contrasting buttons and flap welt pockets. It’s also made from a beautiful wool-blend fabric with a touch of cashmere, which gives it a soft, luxe feel. Since it’s on the pricier side, I’ve also linked a few similar options to consider.

Of course, a long puffer coat is still a great option, and I wear mine a lot. But lately, I’ve been especially drawn to long wool (or wool-look) coats. They feel more polished and intentional while still working for everyday wear. Either way, opting for a longer length helps pull the whole outfit together, adding structure and balance to an otherwise simple look.

3. Updated Denim Makes a Difference

The jeans themselves play a big role in how current an outfit feels. Lately, I’ve been noticing more relaxed bootcut silhouettes popping up, and they feel like a fresh alternative to both traditional flares and overly wide styles.

I also tend to reach for mid- to darker-wash denim when I want an outfit to feel a little more elevated. Darker washes pair beautifully with neutrals and help even a casual sweater-and-jeans outfit look more polished overall.

These jeans are the MOTHER Bookie Sneak, a mid-rise (10″) bootcut with a slightly looser leg and a clean hem. The dark blue wash has subtle whiskering and fading at the knees, which gives them a perfectly lived-in feel while still looking polished.

I finished this version with chocolate brown suede ankle boots, which keeps the outfit classic and refined. That said, this same jeans-and-sweater combo also works really well with sneakers and a long wool coat for a more relaxed, everyday feel—which brings me to the next outfit and a bonus styling tip.

Bonus Styling Tip: Sneaker Swap

For this look, I kept the same basic formula—a pullover crewneck sweater, blue jeans, and a long coat—but swapped the boots for sneakers. That simple change instantly shifts the vibe. Paired with a long wool coat, sneakers feel unexpectedly chic and make the outfit look more relaxed and modern.

Side note: I didn’t layer a t-shirt under this sweater, and you can see how skipping that added interest at the neckline makes this outfit feel a bit more simple. If you don’t want to layer a tee underneath, adding a necklace can achieve a similar effect.

If you’re someone who lives in jeans and sweaters like I do, hopefully this gives you a few easy ideas to play with. These are small tweaks, but they can go a long way in making everyday outfits feel a little more styled and intentional.

  1. Have a safe trip home from Nashville! I know some snow is forecast in the Northeast this weekend. I agree about the long, wool topper coats. I have two from years ago, one in a lighter camel and one darker, and they are so classic and easy to dress up or down. The darker tan one is a Ralph Lauren that I have worn for over 10 years! Your outfits are very simple and plain, I wanted to jump through my computer screen and add a scarf to your last outfit! I have a beautiful brown/tan/cream/red paisley print one that would be perfect! HAHA! Enjoy your time with your parents!

    1. I’m not much of a paisley girl but I was telling Alison I wish I’d brought my plaid wool scarves. And both outfits could use a belt but I didn’t bring the right ones. It’s hard to remember everything when packing up the car with 10 outfits lol!

  2. That backwards to shirt is a light bulb genius idea! I have a few white v necks and typically don’t were a crew t. So this is a great way to shop your closet in a useful way!

  3. Love the tee under sweater. Just wish it wasn’t 80s in California. I can’t even put on a sweater.

  4. I found a great alternative to the backwards tee… We are similar in size. I buy 100% cotton boys’ t-shirts in size XL. They come 6 to a pack at Walmart. Since they are made for kids, the neckline is higher/narrower, and the work perfectly for me under sweaters and sweatshirts. No extra bulk at all, and super cheap!

  5. Madewell brown coat–no longer available–): ): wah
Did you go down a half size on the brown Speziel sneakers? The comments on the site seem to suggest going down half size?

  6. I love my long coats ! I am petite but have a longer Jessica Simpson one in wool in XSP and a puffer long one from Marshalls that is neutral brownish nude color highlighted in black on pockets that zip and cuffs and around edges of neck. Wondered why I always kept reaching for them. Thanks for tips!

  7. I have a Jessica Simpson long coat that has detachable fur collar so I detached it. It is wool and just gorgeous. It was PXS at Stein Mart and got on Black Friday years back. I still dry clean it for winter because it is so warm and fits me to a T. It is in gray so goes with alot. If you need a fancy coat pop the fur collar back on – buttons are invisible and hidden. Some things are just worth it!
