What I Wore Lately Vol. 141

Greetings, friends! It’s Wednesday again, which means, it’s time for another edition of What I Wore Lately! This is where I round up my outfits from the past couple of weeks and share a little about how I put them together and where I wore them.

But first, the usual disclaimer: This is what I actually wore as I went about my everyday life, so it can get a bit repetitive, and some of the older items are no longer available. I’ll link up other options and similar-for-less styles where I can.

What I Wore: Two Weeks of Everyday Outfits

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29 or 30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.

Two weeks ago today, I had an early morning workout appointment and then I went straight from there to a hair appointment to get those pesky gray roots touched up. I wore my favorite Vuori leggings and Zella short-sleeve t-shirt, and I topped it off with a Vuori jacket, which I removed inside the gym.

After that, I came home and changed to meet a friend for lunch. It was a chilly but sunny day, so I took the opportunity bring out this chunky stripe sweater that I’ve had for a while but haven’t worn yet. (It’s on sale, by the way!) I paired it with dark wash jeans to coordinate with the navy stripes in the sweater, and also to provide some contrast against the light blue hem of the sweater.

As I explained in yesterday’s post, I often default to wearing brown footwear with dark wash jeans because I find it a pleasing combination, and I don’t usually like a high contrast between my pants and my shoes. These western-inspired booties were an #NSale purchase, and the chunky kitten heel provides the perfect height for wearing with these full length flares.

I topped it all off with a beige trench, and I carried a caramel-colored glazed leather shoulder bag to coordinate with the boots. I took a picture to show you how I keep my trench coat tied in the back. I rarely need to button it, and this keeps the belt out of the way.

The next day, I was interviewed on a fashion podcast that I since found out isn’t going to air. It’s one of those stories I would love to share over a glass of wine, but I can’t really go into the details here. ANYWHO. I wanted to look put together because it was also video-recorded for YouTube; plus I figured I would be more on my game if I looked the part.

I love this evergreen cowl neck top and washed black wide leg jeans, and I think they work together nicely. (My Franco Sarto booties are on sale again, by the way.) I also took the opportunity to wear my new gold tone Jenny Bird Florence Hoop Earrings and Victoria Emerson Connected Cobra Bracelet Set. I’ve been trying to add some new accessories into my rotation lately, and these versatile pieces are getting a lot of airtime.

After we recorded the podcast, I did some try-ons, and then I changed into my favorite straight ankle jeans with a pullover sweatshirt and sneakers to work from home for the rest of the day.

I had tickets to see Jersey Boys in Philly the next night. My family didn’t feel like going, so I went with a friend. I threw on this outfit that I’ve worn before, but this time I wore brown boots rather than leopard slingbacks for a slightly more casual look, and I topped it off with my brown bomber jacket.

I have no photos from that Saturday; I don’t think I did much. On Sunday, I pulled together this tried and true outfit from last year to go to church.

I changed into comfy clothes for the afternoon, and then Paul and I decided to go out and grab a bite for dinner, so I pulled on this casual outfit with a quilted vest. I knew we might sit outside (which we did) and it was starting to get chilly, so the vest over the waffle henley top was the perfect combination. I’m not loving the red shoes, thought. I felt like my feet arrived in the room before I did.

This was just a casual day working from home…

I put this outfit together to go to a morning Bible Study I attend on Tuesdays, and then to meet a friend for lunch afterwards. It was a mild day, so I started with these boot crop jeans and chocolate brown mock neck top. I added leopard flats, a brown belt, and gold accessories.

I topped it off with this beige twill jacket, and then I had to decide which handbag to carry. Either work, but I decided to go with the lighter caramel color to bridge the gap between the dark top and light jacket.

The next day, I wore this athleisure look to a workout and then to the salon for a mani/pedi.

That night, we met friends for a casual dinner, so I changed into jeans an sneakers and a lightweight jacket over a grey tee.

The next day, I was up and out early for a chiropractor appointment and then a Pilates class. After that, I rushed home and changed for lunch with a couple of work colleagues. I didn’t have a lot of time to think through my outfit, so I threw on this same look from the week before, but this time I went with silver accessories.

I am aware that wide leg jeans are not my best silhouette, but it’s okay to prioritize looking trendy over your ideal silhouette. I also feel like they look better when I’m moving around than when I’m standing still like this, but maybe I’m fooling myself, ha!

After I got home from lunch, I changed into this comfy, casual outfit for the evening. I absolutely love this LOFT sweater, and it’s such a good price.

Last Saturday, Paul and I went to Valley Forge Park, and then we ran some errands. It was a perfect 60-degree day, and I wore my Athleta Inlet Vest with leggings and a burgundy Zella base layer.

Athleta Inlet Vest (S) // Zella tee (M) // Athleta Salutation Stash Leggings (M) // Brooks Ghost (9) // Think Rolyn Bum Bag // similar cap

Here’s an on-location shot. Yep, there are random cannons displayed around the park. There’s so much history in our area, I love it.

That night, I met a friend for a casual sushi dinner. I started to wear crop boot jeans because I was going to wear sneakers, but I ended up wearing boots. I thought it worked, but the hem of my jeans was getting hung up on the tabs on the back of the boots, so I switched into full length bootcut jeans.

When I looked back at both photos, I realized the full length jeans make me look so much longer and leaner. I’ll post the front-on photos side-by-side so you can see the difference.

Here’s a good picture of my new Hammitt VIP Crossbody. This is such a nice bag! I love the supple pebbled leather and edgy gunmetal hardware.

That brings us to Sunday, and I wore this dressed-up denim look to church and out to lunch after. I swear, I think we eat out more than we eat in these days!

Talbots jacket (S) // Michael Stars Nara Mock NeckTop (M) // MOTHER Weekender (30) (budget option) // Veronica Beard boots – on sale! (8.5) // similar belt // HOBO shoulder bag// Victoria Emerson earrings & bracelet

On Monday, I had a workout and then a micro-blading touchup appointment, and then I met a friend for coffee. I came right home from that and hopped on a Zoom call, so I never had a chance to change out of my workout clothes. It all worked out because I went for a walk after all that, and I was already wearing an appropriate outfit!

Vuori jacket (S) // Zella tank (M) // Vuori joggers (M) // Brooks Ghost (9) // similar cap

And then yesterday, I wore this simple look to my weekly Bible study and then to the mall to do some shopping.

  1. I love the darker wash denim combination with the higher-end style, short length jackets. They almost look like dress slacks and, really make a “casual-leaning” outfit seem elevated just by themselves!

OTOH: I think joggers often tend-to look like wearing hospital scrubs (lol!) and don’t look as flattering as black leggings can (love your IG post of that gorgeous magenta running jacket paired with the black bottoms). After reading you for nearly 4 years’ now, I know you’re not a big fan of “athleisure” (I try to avoid the kind which screams “gym” by having brand logos over it myself!)…*but*: I think if it’s a quality label and you keep the leggings element of an outfit black, the comfort-level-factor and active (ahem: young-er/SKINNY-ing!) vibe of athleisure is just sooo addictive to not want to sacrifice.

    1. I agree, I like the look of black leggings SO much better than joggers. Even though I consider joggers more as athleisure (and the leggings more for legit exercise), I feel like the joggers aren’t as flattering.

  2. You look fabulous in the first picture! The light blue sweater with navy stripes is so pretty. If I had a need for another sweater, I would add it to my closet. It’s nice to see that you have a normal life, just like we do.

  3. Hi JoLynne
I always look forward to reading your what I wore post – it never disappoints!
We are a family of 5 adults & have the Ninja DoubleStack Air fryer & I’m so pleased with it. I can’t believe I managed so long without one!

    1. Ooooh, that is tempting. I feel like now that I usually cook for just 3 of us, I might find it very handy. Plus I hear it’s good for making GF foods crispy and delicious, which my celiac daughter would probably appreciate.

  4. I love every outfit! Now that I am retired I struggle with what to wear without looking boring & sloppy because I still want to look put together so you have given me many great ideas! Thank😊

    1. So glad to hear that! I will admit, half the time, the only reason I bother dressing cute is b/c I know I will be documenting it for these posts, haha! But I’m always glad when I do take the time to put an outfit together. The days when I don’t, I am not as happy or as productive.

    2. Dawn, I am also retired and agree, Jolynn is the “bomb” with her fresh ideas! but I have to do a lot of repurposing things I already have in my closet.

  5. TY for sharing some great casual outfits! Wondering how the Quince Crossbody bag worked for you? I’m on the fence!

    1. I still have it, but I haven’t carried it yet, not sure why. I carry black bags a lot. I have been reaching for the Hammitt when I am wearing silver, and the Quince has gold hardware.

  6. Maybe it is just me but I have two purses-one for spring/summer one for fall/winter. But maybe I need to change things up. Do you use purse inserts so that you don’t have to put everything into each purse or what do you do. Does everything go into each purse or you edit things out?

    1. A lot of women do, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I’ve always been a bag girl and I enjoy switching them out and feel like they really add to the outfit, especially since I tend to wear simple outfits. I only have an organizer in my tote bag and that’s mainly because I like to protect my computer. I think changing my purse regularly helps me keep them cleaned out because I’m not gonna move a bunch of dirty tissues and receipts from one bag to the next, lol. I made a rule for myself that when I moved one bag to the other, I will move everything so I don’t end up with a bunch of bags with odds and ends in each one that make me go hunting when I need something. If my stuff doesn’t all fit in a smaller bag, I am allowed to keep one bigger bag to house the rest of the stuff, and I’m pretty good about grabbing it all and putting it all in the next big bag that I use, if that makes sense . 🤪

  7. I always love these posts. I have never worn athleisure out and about but I’m playing more pickleball and like getting my errands done while I’m out. I think upping my workout clothing game has made me more comfortable in public. I wear Athleta and Vuori. As for the air fryer, although I don’t have lots of “single use” appliances, I like my air-fryer/convection oven. Mine’s a Ninja shaped like a little oven that swings upright to store easily. I don’t like appliances on my counters so it lives in our pantry and is carried out for use. I like this one more than the type with the “bucket” my kids have because this is easier to clean. This has a basket-like tray that can be pulled out and cleaned in the sink or even in the dishwasher. Ours came from Costco but they’re around. I often use it rather than the oven because there’s just 2 of us.

    1. Thanks for the advice on the air fryer. And I agree, I am not one to put on athleisure for the purpose of running errands, but if I’m wearing it to pilates or the gym and want to run errands on the way home, I have no problem doing so. That’s one reason why I invest in quality, flattering athletic wear. Plus, I just think it’s more fun to exercise (and thus, I’m more likely to do so) when I feel good about how I look.

  8. Love your what I wore lately posts, you always look amazing! However, I was surprised at your comment of “I am aware that wide leg jeans are not my best silhouette, but it’s okay to prioritize looking trendy over your ideal silhouette” I would never prioritize trendy over my preferred silhouette, maybe that comes with age or maybe I am in the minority – I’ve just gotten to a place where I am only buying and wearing what I love and what I feel looks good on me (might not but oh well) and btw the wide leg jeans don’t look bad on you – again just a little surprised at your comment.

    1. Yeah, I think it’s an interesting conversation to have. I have heard Jen at everyday style school say something to that effect and it made me really think about it and realize that I do that sometimes without exactly articulating it. I’ve known for years that the most flattering silhouette on me is a full length flare, but I don’t wanna live in full length flares, even if they are currently trending. When skinny jeans were all the rage, I chose to wear them because I wanted to look current more than I wanted to wear the most flattering silhouette for me.

Happily, we now live in a time when pretty much anything goes and can look current if styled in a current way, which is very freeing, but I still don’t want to always wear the same silhouette every day. I’m not saying we should all be a slave to trends, don’t get me wrong, but I really like the wide leg jeans and even if I know I look better in flares I’m still going to wear the wide leg jeans sometimes because they make me feel stylish, and I enjoy wearing them. But I definitely think every woman has to make those decisions for herself.

      1. I see both sides. I won’t wear something is super dated even if it flatters me, but I will if it’s a classic but just not the most current thing. And on the flip side, I’ll wear something trendy even if it’s not quite my best look, but not if it’s a downright bad look for me! (Like if it’s an 8 vs a 10 maybe, but not a 5 or less!) I’ve also found that for trends that either aren’t my best, or are a bit too youthful, a more understated version may flatter better.

        1. I totally agree with that, for me, as well. I am far more likely to wear something trendy even if it doesn’t flatter me, than I am to wear something dated that does. I think it all comes down to our personal style priorities. I define my personal style as modern, polished, and understated. And modern is the keyword there. That’s why it is so important to have tangible words to define our style. It really helps make decisions about what we want to wear and why we may like it or not.

  9. Actually, I think you look great in wide-leg jeans! Especially with a heel. But I know what you mean about wanting to wear a trending piece even if you feel it’s not ultra-flattering; I know white jeans can add visual weight, but I don’t care. I love the look so I wear them!

Great outfits. You’ve given me ideas, as always!

  10. Great post, thank you!!
    You continue to inspire.
I think you look great in wide leg denim! I love what you said though, about sometimes chosing trend over what’s most flattering, I do that too sometimes. Sometimes it’s just fun!
I ordered the navy Loft vneck sweater, wow, what a great price today.
    💜

  11. Love all the full length flare and wide leg jeans outfits. I love dark denim with brown shoes too. I’m not into crop jeans especially flare or bootcut anymore. They make me look shorter and squatty and I’m not even overweight. All it takes is a picture for me to never wear a particular style. I think the red sneakers are cute with that outfit. That last jacket is really cute too.

  12. Happy Wednesday! I always enjoy these WIWL posts. How do you like the Claire V small crossbody? When I was in Europe this month I saw quite a few ClaireV bags in all colors with colorful straps worn across the chest. I didn’t realize how popular the brand is. I love your athleisure outfits and really like that Evereve cooper vest!

  13. Great choices. I think you look good in the different denim styles. I can’t seem to get there. lol I’m shorter and the new menopause body has come so nothing seems to fit right. Yikes. !!!!!

  14. Personally, I think you look fabulous in the dark wash jeans, with the dark green top, it’s my favorite outfit of the week. It is very flattering 😊

  15. How are the Vuori leggings? I am so picky. Do they stay in place while running or do they inch down? Also, how do the black hold up with washing? Thanks!

    1. I LOVE my Vuori leggings. The color holds up great. They are super soft. I haven’t run in a long time, so I can’t say how well they stay in place, but I don’t have an issue with them inching down with any other activity.

  16. Love these posts! Thank you for sharing your daily life outfits! I find I’m much more productive and enjoy my days so much more when I take the time to put together an outfit!! So many great ideas here to incorporate into my days!! Although, fall is really warm here in Texas, I can use these ideas to incorporate Texas appropriate weight clothes to put together cute fall outfits!! I really love your style!!

  17. Great post! Love all the outfits; just now ordered the first pair of P448 you featured from Northstroms, great price! Hope they work, unfortunately the Veja’s I ordered last week just did not fit right on me but still love the style.

      1. Glad to hear that, I’m all about comfort with my finicky feet! Excited to get the P448’s. Also love the Puma’s and the like that you are featuring. I had a pair of Puma’s brown with red swoosh for several years wearing them with jeans and gave them away a couple of years ago, wish I had kept them! I like the brown ones you are featuring that are similar to the Puma’s.

  18. I love these posts! Your discipline in attending workouts has truly inspired me. (No more letting long office hours put me off!)
Thanks Jo-Lynne for doing what you do best for all of us 😊
