Well, it’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks over here! Between moving my daughter into college in Nashville and all the usual end-of-summer chaos, I’ve barely had a chance to catch my breath, and now I’m off again. This time, I’m headed to New York City for a quick work trip.
Before I hit the road, I wanted to round up some of the outfits I’ve been wearing lately. They’re mostly just casual everyday looks, but hopefully it gives you a little inspiration to shop your closet and try some new combos as we wrap up the season.

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29 or 30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.
I threw on this simple top and shorts one day after my morning walk to work from home. I had a couple of Zoom calls, so I wanted to look pulled together—at least on top. I love this bright pink muscle tee, and I just added some simple silver jewelry.

Here’s the morning walk look… It’s nothing special, but I thought this picture was so cute with little Savannah standing there looking up at me. She knows what it means when I lace up my sneakers!

I made last minute plans to meet a friend at the mall one day, and I took the opportunity to dress up a bit. These trouser jeans are a major splurge, but I found a similar looking pair at Old Navy, so I linked those below. The green top is from last year, but I found it in some other colors at Zappos.

I wore this super casual look to run some errands, and I wanted to try out these new jeans. I had to go up to the size 31 to get a comfortable fit, but I think I like the slim bootcut ankle look.

This is one of the tops I got at EVEREVE when I was at the mall. I love the henley style short sleeve sweatshirt for pairing with jeans, and it’s such a pretty color. I wore this outfit to the nail salon so I went with easy flip flops for my pedicure.
For some reason, I totally forgot to wear jewelry other than my rings, which I rarely remove. I’m not sure how that happened, I guess I was in a rush—it just goes to show what a difference a pair of earrings and a bracelet can make. This outfit looks really unfinished to me, even though the top and the jeans are both interesting and the proportions work well together.

The next day, I debuted another new EVEREVE top for a mall trip with my older daughter to shop for a wedding guest dress. I paired this brown and blue striped sweater with high-rise wide-leg ankle jeans. Since the sweater is on the shorter side, I went with jeans that have a high enough rise for the hem to overlap the waistband. The current look is to have them just meet, but for my body type (and at my age), I think a little overlap is more flattering.
Brown sandals bookend the look, and I also chose them for their molded footbed, so they’d be comfortable for a lot of mall walking. The toggle pendant necklace is new, and it’s quite affordable! It’s a mix of gold and silver metals so I also went with mixed metal earrings and then I chose a chunky silver bracelet.

This is another EVEREVE top, but it’s from earlier in the season. I feel like a walking billboard for EVEREVE these days. They just seem to find the best “beyond basic” pieces that elevate my go-to jeans-and-a-top combos. For church, I paired it with white jeans to echo the crochet trim, gold strappy sandals, and bold chainlink earrings for a fun finishing touch.”

I changed into white shorts for the afternoon and to host friends by the pool later in the day. I also swapped in these beige t-strap sandals because they’re just a smidge more casual than the gold pair and felt more comfortable for being around the house.

When we decided to get in the pool, I changed into one of my favorite swimsuits and just pulled jean shorts over top. Sometimes a cover-up feels like overkill, and shorts are just easier.

I threw on this simple graphic tee and a different pair of jean shorts for a Monday working from home.

The next day, I wore my favorite jean skirt and a red top to visit a friend and bring her a meal.

And I wore these tie waist jeans and the pink LNA top for another casual day at home, and also for our last night with Becca. I made a spaghetti dinner, and we all played HITSTER afterwards. It was a fun way to wrap up the summer.

The next thing I knew, it was time to take her back to college. She and I drove her car down, and I flew back a few days later. It’s a 12-14 hour drive with stops, so we stayed overnight with my parents in Roanoke, which is about halfway. For the car ride, I wore these comfy jeans and sandals and a red tee both days.

Once we got settled into our hotel in Nashville on Friday, we changed and went downstairs for dinner. Since I had worn the other outfit two days in a row, I felt like changing into something fresh. It was really hot in Nashville last weekend, so I wore this top and the denim mini skirt, and I changed into sneakers in case we ended up walking downtown.

I wore the same pink top the next day to help her move into her apartment, but I paired it with white twill shorts. They were the only shorts I brought, and I’m not sure why I didn’t also pack some jean shorts. They would have been more practical, although Belmont has a student team that moves everything in for you, so we just had to unpack. Amazingly, my shorts stayed white through it all, and a pizza dinner, too.

The next day we did some more errands and shopping for her apartment, and I went back to the jean skirt and wore it with a graphic tee and sneakers.

By mid-afternoon, I could tell it was time for me to leave and let her settle in and get acquainted with her new roommates, so she dropped me off at my hotel. I did some work and then changed to go up to the rooftop bar for a bite to eat.
I assumed it was outdoor seating, and since it was super hot and humid, I changed into the lightest clothes I’d brought—the white shorts from move-in day (miraculously still clean, albeit quite wrinkled) and a neutral linen tank. (As it turns out, the bar was inside with A/C, and the outdoor seating was separate, so I could have worn jeans, but I was still quite comfortable in this outfit.)

And then I was up bright and early the next morning (4AM!) to fly back home. The white jeans and black top were the only items I brought that I hadn’t worn yet, so I put them together just for the sake of wearing them. The white sneakers and white ankle-length jeans create a nice long, lean leg line, so I think it works, although a camel or tan suede sneaker would be less stark. But it was fine for my short flight home.

And that’s a wrap for this edition of What I Wore Lately! It was definitely a lot of denim, but I’m really enjoying the variety I have in my collection at the moment. Plus, it’s just what I’m most comfortable in. I’m looking forward to integrating more grey and black tones as well as some muted colors this fall. (Spoiler Alert: Those rust kick flares came in, and I love them!)

Hi JoLynne,
I really enjoy your newsletter and style advice. I have to thank you for the Hitster game recommendation! I bought this when you first recommended it, and my family has had such fun playing it! I see where they have a new edition – Hitster “Guilty Pleasures”, so you may want to add this to your collection 🙂
Thanks! Good to hear.
Hope your daughter has a great year my daughter loved Belmont! She graduated two years ago.
Thank you! It’s such a wonderful school. She’s loving it so far.
All of the tops you have from Evereve are perfect! Isn’t it funny how our dogs learn what certain actions mean! All of your traveling makes me tired. How long will you be in Europe next month? I hope that your business in NY will be very productive.
We will be gone for 16 days!!! 😱
Great outfits! Love the trouser jeans. Moved my daughter into college last week also. Flew from Texas to Ohio. I had a connection in Nashville coming back- very nice airport! Best of luck to Becca!
It is a really nice airport!
I gave up wearing actual clothes when moving & viewing college campuses. I now wear a tennis skirt since it’s usually HOT.
That’s a good idea, and would look cute and put together. My daughter wore this lululemon skirt on move-in day and looked super cute and was comfy too.
Jolynne what are your thoughts on the comfort/support of those Xero tennis shoes?
They’re very comfortable, but they are minimalist shoes with barefoot technology so they don’t have the kind of support you may be used to. You have to build up to wearing them. My chiropractor is a fan, though. He says they will make your feet stronger if you wear them a lot.
It looks like you chose the Aidas Samba OG a few times–and for walking. Do you feel it has arch support? Or is it a flat sneaker? what color combo is yours and will you be wearing them in the fall or going for a more non-white sneaker? I just bought some New Balance 2002r in a great color combo for fall–they have a suede tip. I just wore them today for grocery shopping and when I got home–I saw they already had a dark smudge on the toe! I’m so frustrated trying to find a good-looking, well made and supportive trainer/sneaker!
And as far as leopard–my Evereve leopard belt came today–its suppose to be M/L but it feels like a small–ugh–another return. I do love the fashion styles of Evereve–more than any other store right now.
The Sambas have some support, but not as much as the Spezial, I don’t think. I feel like this color way is pretty summery, with the mesh panels.
Thank you! I’ll look into Spezials!
