What I Wore Lately Vol. 88

Greetings and happy hump day! I know we just did What I Wore Lately last week, and I usually post these every other week, but the post I had planned for today was put on hold, so I thought I’d go ahead and whip this up.

I figure, with the weather being so up and down right now, holding these another week may make some of the looks irrelevant for those of us living in cooler climates. As if right on cue, we’re supposed to get some real fall weather this weekend. It’s going to dip down into the 40s for the football game Friday night!

As a warm-weather fan, I can’t say I’m exactly excited about that, but I do appreciate when the weather aligns with the seasons. It makes my job here a heckuvalot easier!

Oh, and I did put up a second post yesterday with The Best Jeans in the Shopbop Sale. I guess I could just let that one be the new post for today, but I already started this so I’ll just make today a two-fer.

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small in tops, a 28 or 29 in jeans, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.

What I Wore Lately: A Week of Everyday Outfits

This first look is from last Wednesday. It appears that I just worked from home that day, as there is nothing else on my calendar. Am I the only one who can’t remember what I did last week???

Judging from this outfit, it was also quite warm outside. I just love how easy this top is to throw on with shorts or jeans… You will be seeing it again before the week (or post, rather) is over. I love it when I find something that I don’t get tired of wearing over and over. Cost per wear and all that!

Oh, and both the top and shorts are on sale!

The next day, I had a photo shoot in the morning and then I went to the dentist to get the permanent crown on that stupid tooth that I’ve been dealing with since June.

I’m still having pain with cold liquids, but it’s mild, so I’m ignoring it. I have a long history of mysterious medical issues that no one can diagnose that eventually go away, so I’m hoping this will follow suit.

These jeans are part of the Shopbop Sale, by the way! You can save 15% off orders of $200+, 20% off orders of $500+, or 25% off orders of $800+.

That night, I had plans to go out to dinner with a couple of my girlfriends. I debated wearing this outfit…

Evereve banded shell (S) // Citizens cropped bootcut jeans (29) // Seychelles wood heels (8) // similar earrings // Victoria Emerson X Jo-Lynne Shane necklace and bracelet c/o (launches TOMORROW at 10AM EST on VictoriaEmerson.com!!!)

But then at the last minute, I switched to this. I haven’t worn these jeans and heels very much, and I love this sleeveless ribbed top for fall. Once it turns cold, I won’t wear it much, but I can always layer the floral top under a jacket to get a little more wear out of it.

Someone is going to ask why I wouldn’t layer this top under a jacket. I can, but I don’t like high necklines under jackets. They make me look like I’m choking or something. I can get away with high necklines when they’re sleeveless.

I tried it a few different ways… The first look seemed kind of plain, so I tried a front tuck, but these jeans have a suuuper high rise, so I felt like that drew too much attention to my midsection.

Then I tried adding a belt that sort of matches the shoes, but that draws the even more attention to that area and makes it almost the focal point of the outfit.

So I decided to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and I just went with the untucked version and hoped my pretty earrings would bring the focus to my face, not my middle. The top is short enough, and the jeans are long enough, that I still get that “golden ratio” that I’m always going for.

Alrighty! That brings us to last Friday, and I had to run the dog to and from the groomer, plus we had a home football game that night. I kept it casual in my Maine raglan tee (it’s more of a light sweatshirt than a tee, but they call it a tee…) and denim shorts.

I ran some errands on Saturday morning and then I spent the afternoon volunteering with the high school marching band. The parents serve them dinner in between their rehearsal and the cavalcade.

AllSaints tee (M) // Mother Dazzler slim straight ankle jeans (29; similar wash on sale!) // Veja Esplar ON SALE! (39) // similar earrings // Victoria Emerson X Jo-Lynne Shane necklace and bracelet c/o (launches TOMORROW at 10AM EST!)

Oh, and by the way, these Veja Esplar sneakers and the Mother Dazzlers are part of the Shopbop Sale. The jeans in the sale have a finished hem, but the wash is similar and the fit is the same. I’m also kind of jonesing for the Veja Campo in the Natural. I might order them to try while they’re on sale.

That night, Paul and I headed over to the cavalcade to see our marching band perform, and I grabbed a jacket. I’m so glad I did because it was a bit chilly after the sun went down.

This jacket is on sale, by the way. It’s lightweight and drapey, the perfect casual fall topper.

When I went to get dressed for church on Sunday morning, I decided to style up some white jeans for fall. I love wearing white and camel together, so I tried my Mother Dazzlers with the Banana Republic dolman sweater, but the rise of the jeans was too short for the length of this sweater.

I didn’t like how you can see the waistband of the jeans when I moved around, and I just feel like I look overall a little top heavy.

BR dolman sweater (S) // Mother Dazzler slim straight ankle jeans (29; more sizes here) // Veronica Beard flats (8)

So then I switched to the Mother Hustler. They have a higher rise, which helps with the waistband issue, and the wider leg opening balances out the broader shoulder silhouette created by the dolman sleeves.

I also swapped the flats for heels. I probably should show you both ways, but I don’t like these jeans with flats unless they’re flat sandals. They just look dumpy to me. (And yes, they also need an iron.)

I do like that outfit a lot, but as I wore it around for a bit, I noticed the top riding up every time I moved. I was afraid I’d bend over in church to pick up a hymnal and expose my back along the top edge of my shaping shorts, so I went back up and changed into this cable knit sweater vest.

I like the camel color better with white denim for fall, but I was so much more comfortable in this.

FYI, these white Mother Hustlers are also part of the Shopbop sale, as are the light wash Au Revoir that I wear so much. (For size reference, I take a 28 in the Au Revoir and a 29 in the white.)

Here’s me trying to get a close-up of my jewelry. I didn’t know at the time, but the necklace is sold out, but I love these earrings, and this bracelet is part of my Victoria Emerson collection that launches tomorrow.

I had a workout appointment on Monday, and I took a picture on my way out the door so I could show you the Vuori Clean Elevation Shorty. I just ordered them because I love my Clean Elevation Leggings so much, but I get too hot wearing them at the gym.

They’re super soft and stretchy, and they have a super high rise that smooths out all the fluff without binding or creating any muffin top. I ordered the medium, which is what I wear in the leggings.

Both the leggings and shorts are on sale in the Black Camo that I have, but here’s a link to all the colors. You can’t go wrong with anything from this collection. The fabric is so buttery soft.

I also linked the sports bra I’m wearing because I like it a lot. The reviews are mixed, but I’m the Anonymous, Zappos Customer,

And then it was back to my trusty floral top and jean shorts for the rest of the day working from home.

I had a photo shoot yesterday, and then I grabbed this top again and threw it on with my comfy Mother Insiders. I know, I have no shame.

And that’s it for this week! Hopefully I’ll have some more transitional outfits to share with you next week! As much as I’m not looking forward to being cold, it will be fun to play around with some layered looks.

  1. I’ve been wanting to try the Veja sneakers. I just registered for Shopbop Do the Vegas run small/narrow, do you wear your usual size?

  2. I didn’t realize it was getting so cold this weekend. We’re actually leaving Friday for a week, this is a good reminder to check the weather there before I finish packing…

  3. Regarding wearing one top three times, as my mom used to say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” The top looks so nice in you and is so pretty, why not wear it a lot.

  4. I loved all three of your looks with the ribbed top. I didn’t think the tuck or the belt made your midsection stand out. I love the color of the top!!

  5. I liked all the outfits. I ordered the LOFT floral tee after all…..even though it has hidden peacocks in it. Ha Ha. I couldn’t resist the colors and LOFT was having 50% off and free shipping. I also got a long sleeve burgundy top with some lace on the sleeve. Today my LOFT order with girl friend jeans and burgundy, short button up cardigan came and I was surprised they both work. Glad for that. I sure needed some jeans. Not sure why I was surprised. I had tried both on in the store and just went home to order to get a better sale when it came up and size I needed in the jeans. I tend to be drawn to the burgundy color that is out this season.

  6. I so love that Roan & Ryan top! I’m looking forward to seeing your transitional outfits. I’m struggling with styling fall booties with straight leg jeans. Boots and clogs with wide leg/boot cut jeans is easier for me, but I prefer straight leg jeans a little more. I’ll await your tutelage 😊

  7. Hi Jo-Lynne!!
Would you consider doing a post or guide on how to dress your tummy!! I’m 59 and have just been blessed with a tummy and honestly don’t know what to wear. Some things just seem to enhance it or make you look even bigger!! Frustrated and need help!!😫

    1. Hi Stacy, I can try but it really depends on body type. Have you thought of taking the Adore Your Wardrobe course? It’s very helpful to learning how to dress your unique body. This is my affiliate link: https://bit.ly/AYW2020

The Everyday Style School podcast also has a lot of helpful information. You can google and fine it. She sells courses as well.
