I’ve had so many of you reach out lately asking for recommendations on where to find elegant, age-appropriate, and stylish wedding guest dresses. It can be a challenge to find that perfect balance because you want to look current and polished without feeling like you’re trying too hard or looking too matronly.
So today I’m breaking down the best brands and my favorite places to shop for wedding guest dresses for women over 50, from a casual garden wedding to a formal black tie affair.

Where to Shop for Wedding Attire Over 50
Before we dive into specific brands, let’s talk about the retailers that consistently have the best selection and offer a range of price points. It’s also important to pay attention to shipping charges and return policies, especially when shopping for special occasion pieces. Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s are by far your best bets for finding wedding guest dresses with the least amount of hassle.
1. Nordstrom
Nordstrom is always my first stop. They have a dedicated Wedding Guest category that makes it so easy to filter by length, color, and dress code. And their search function is especially helpful, almost as good as Google. You can specifically search for dresses with certain features such as sleeves or midi lengths, which I know many women our age prefer.
Their variety is also pretty much unmatched. You can find everything from affordable brands like Eliza J to high-end designers. And their alterations department is a lifesaver if you find a dress you love that just needs a small adjustment to fit properly.
In addition, Nordstrom offers free shipping and free returns (with a few brand exceptions), as long as the special occasion item is unworn and tags are attached.
2. Bloomingdale’s
Bloomingdale’s is another fantastic resource, especially if the wedding is on the more formal side. Their in-house AQUA line offers stylish, wearable options at more accessible price points. They also carry many higher-end brands, including Tadashi Shoji and Teri Jon, which are great choices for formal or black-tie weddings.
Their website also features a Well-Dressed Guest guide, which can be helpful when navigating less familiar dress codes.
As far as shipping and returns, Bloomingdale’s offers free standard shipping and free returns with an unlimited return window for members of their free-to-join Loyallist program. Otherwise, the return window is 30 days.
Loyallist members also earn points on all purchases, which can be redeemed for $25 rewards for every 5,000 points earned. I’ve been a Loyallist member for years, and it’s well worth the small amount of time it takes to sign up.
3. Dillard’s and Macy’s
Both Macy’s and Dillard’s offer a large selection of occasion wear at more accessible price points. These retailers are especially worth considering if you’re shopping for a cocktail, semi-formal, or daytime wedding.
Dillard’s carries several exclusive brands, including Antonio Melani and Alex Marie, that you won’t find elsewhere. They also tend to carry a solid selection of Eliza J, which is a reliable option for classic silhouettes and wedding-appropriate styles.
Macy’s carries many of the same occasion-focused brands and offers a wide range of styles across different price points. Their widespread store locations can also be a plus, especially if you prefer the option of in-store returns or want to try on dresses in person.
The main thing to watch with Dillard’s and Macy’s is their return policies. Both have a 30-day return window. Dillard’s deducts a $9.95 shipping fee, and Macy’s charges a $9.99 return fee unless you’re a Star Rewards member.
4. Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus
When the dress code calls for black tie or formal, Saks or Neiman Marcus are excellent places to look. If your budget allows for a splurge, both retailers carry designer collections that are often harder to find elsewhere and are well suited for more formal weddings.
That said, it’s important to pay close attention to their return policies, which are more restrictive than those of other department stores.
Neiman’s offers free returns within 15 days of delivery; returns made after that (up to 30 days) include a $9.95 fee. Saks allows returns within 30 days, with a $9.95 fee for mail-in returns. In-store returns are always free, if you’re fortunate enough to have a location nearby.

Best Wedding Guest Dress Brands for Women Over 50
Finding a brand that gets our bodies is half the battle. These are the names I find myself recommending over and over again.

Eliza J Embroidered Floral Illusion Lace A-Line Gown
Maggy London and Eliza J
Maggy London and Eliza J both offer fantastic bang for your buck when it comes to special occasion dresses. You can usually find a gorgeous cocktail dress from either brand for under $150. They do a lot of classic silhouettes, like shifts and A-lines, that never go out of style. I’ve had especially good luck with Eliza J over the years. Both brands are carried at Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Dillard’s.
Betsy & Adam
Betsy & Adam is a great brand to explore when you’re looking for a formal dress that feels both current and flattering. Many of their styles feature ruching, illusion necklines, and metallic details that add just the right amount of interest. Their dresses work well for weddings, galas, and other special events, and the price point is usually very reasonable for the quality. You can find this brand at Nordstrom.
Adrianna Papell
Adrianna Papell is one of the most popular in the world of occasion wear. They’re famous for their beaded gowns, but don’t overlook their simpler crepe sheaths and fit-and-flare styles. They offer a great size range, including petite and plus, and their dresses are always structured in a way that feels very secure. You’ll find Adrianna Papell at Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Bloomingdale’s.
Alex Evenings
If you’re looking for a dress that’s timeless and flattering, Alex Evenings is always a safe bet. They’re widely available at Nordstrom and Macy’s, and they’re consistently rated high for comfort and fit.
JS Collections
JS Collections is known for elegant lace dresses with beautiful sheer details. If you’re looking for something that stands out in a subtle, refined way, this brand has a lot to offer. The styles are often fitted without being too tight, and they tend to flatter a range of body types. They’re carried at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s.
XSCAPE Evenings
XSCAPE dresses really know how to highlight your shape. You’ll find structured bodices, flattering ruching, and off-the-shoulder styles that feel elegant and intentional. They offer a wide variety of silhouettes and often have extended sizing. You can find XSCAPE at Nordstrom and Macy’s.
Kay Unger
Kay Unger is known for designing pieces that feel refined and a little unexpected. Her walk-through jumpsuits and tailored tea-length dresses are some of the most elegant options I’ve seen in this price range. The structure and detailing make them look far more expensive than they actually are. This brand is carried at Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s.
Antonio Melani & Alex Marie
Both Antonio Melani & Alex Marie are exclusive to Dillard’s and worth a look if you’re shopping for a special occasion. Antonio Melani is known for polished, elevated styles with beautiful tailoring and refined details, while Alex Marie leans a little more classic and modest with flattering silhouettes and sleeve options that are great for weddings, church, or daytime events.
Lauren Ralph Lauren
Lauren Ralph Lauren is a go-to for timeless, classic styles. The silhouettes are simple, the fabrics are high quality, and the overall look is polished. These dresses are perfect if you prefer something more traditional or need a versatile option you can wear more than once. Nordstrom and Macy’s both carry this brand.
Reformation
If you like more modern silhouettes and are open to sustainable fashion, Reformation has flattering midi and maxi dresses that work well for weddings and events. The fit can be a bit slim, so it’s one to try if you like a more fitted style.
Tadashi Shoji
If you’re going for something truly special, take a look at Tadashi Shoji. These dresses often feature stunning lace details and draping that’s incredibly flattering. They tend to have just enough stretch to be comfortable without losing that elevated feel. This brand is carried at Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and Neiman Marcus.
Teri Jon by Rickie Freeman
If you have a formal or black-tie wedding on the books, you have to check out Teri Jon. This brand is a favorite for a reason. They design with the “Mother of the Bride” and “Special Guest” in mind, meaning they prioritize luxury fabrics like metallic jacquards and shirt-dress silhouettes that look incredibly high-end. They’re excellent at providing arm coverage. You’ll find Teri Jon at Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and Neiman Marcus.
Mac Duggal
For those who aren’t afraid of a little sparkle or a bold floral, Mac Duggal is the place to go. Their dresses are truly wearable art. You’ll find everything from intricate beading to dramatic (but tasteful) ruffles. They have a fantastic “Wedding Edit” that features beautiful midi dresses and floor-length gowns. You can also find Mac Duggal dresses at Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom.
Sachin & Babi
I’ve been seeing this brand featured in more and more editorials lately. I love the look of their unique prints and modern textures. Sachin & Babi dresses often feel a bit more fashion-forward and “boutique” than your average department store find. They also carry this brand at Saks.

Where to Shop for Mother of the Bride or Groom Dresses
If you’re shopping for a mother of the bride or groom dress, many of the brands I’ve already mentioned are a great place to start. Labels like Alex Evenings, Kay Unger, Tadashi Shoji, JS Collections, and Betsy & Adam offer elegant styles that feel special without being over the top.
Most of these brands are available at Nordstrom and other major department stores, which makes it easier to order a few options to try at home or return in store if needed.

It’s too bad you go to Florida and it’s cold but yes better than single digits. Always good to get away to refresh even if you are working. I just got a wedding invite for a relative for July 25 th. It won’t be fancy. Just your typical Summer wedding. I’ll still need to find a dress. I’ve gotten down to almost no dresses to wear these days.
Same. I need to start looking for my St. Lucia trip. I think I’ll want some dresses for dinners.
Timing couldn’t have been better on this. Just got an invite to a wedding in June that will be in Big Sur and it is cocktail attire. Should be warm during the day, but definitely cold at night and everything will be outside. With a brief look through all the links I already saved three options in my Wish List.
That sounds like fun!
My daughter is getting married in June. So far, the Sachin + Babi dresses have been my favorites. I have one that went on sale at Nordstrom the day before Christmas. I want a long dress, but not a “gown” as the wedding is at a rustic ski lodge in Utah and not formal. I’m finding that to be a little tricky. Still going to do a little more shopping to make sure this is one. I do love that I can wear a regular bra with it!

That’s beautiful!
Thanks for the timely post! Have family October wedding in Vegas. Will go for the glitz!
Thank you for this great information!! I have a black tie Charity event at the end of April and this is very helpful! I can’t wait for your St Lucia trip. We are going to Spain, Greece and Italy and I’m in desperate need of a capsule wardrobe.
Thank you for this! I rarely go anywhere that requires more than a “little black dress” but it’s good to have these in mind if something comes up. Any chance you have brand recs for teens prom/homecoming dresses? My daughter is 5’9″ so short dresses are indecently too short on her. We found a tea length dress and had it shortened in the fall but she’s picky and it was hard to find something that looked young but met her requirements. Any ideas appreciated!
I actually do. We had a very good experience with Stacees. Lulus is also worth checking.
Thank you!
Great post. Thank you for this information and ideas!
We have a wedding reception in August but the shower is end of February in Ohio. They are getting married on the beach in Florida in March. I would love any suggestions for a dress to wear to a bridal shower in February. I tried a whole bunch on at Nordstrom on Saturday and didn’t find anything I liked. (I love their customer service!!)
I could use a few suggestions, I’m 5”4’, “slim”, and 63yo. I’m like to wear flats due to feet issues as well. If you don’t have time to link anything. I was thinking a wrap dress, long sleeves? What are your thoughts? Thanks Jo-Lynne! 🥰
Great post and very helpful. I wore a dress by Xscape for my daughter’s wedding last October. It was beautiful! However, I fell in love with one by Sachin & Babi that didn’t fit the color plan. It was gorgeous and felt lux. Definitely will look to this brand again when the need arises!
