2021 Spring Fashion Try-On Haul

Happy Saturday, friends! I’ve got a pretty big try-on haul today, and I didn’t get around to editing most of these pictures or writing this post until this morning, so it’s going up a lot later than I had hoped.

Most of these stores are having sales, so I didn’t want to hold any till next week, so yeah… here we are! Better late than never, I guess. Let’s dive right in!

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and 135 pounds, with an hourglass shape. Unless I say otherwise, I’m wearing a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, a 6 in dresses/jumpsuits, and size 8 shoe.

White House Black Market Try-Ons

White House Black Market is having a 30% off sale right now, and all of the following WHBM items are included, as far as I know.

WHBM Woven Front Tank

tank (S) // jeans (6) // sandals

I picked up this top, thinking it would make a nice layering piece under jackets. I like the satiny fabric, it’s nice for date nights. I also appreciate the wide, bra-friendly straps and flattering scoop neck.

It’s a little longer in the back and has a split hem, and it’s 24″ long from shoulder to hem. It looks fine left out, but you can also give it a front-tuck if you like. This tank also comes in petite, and it runs TTS.

[flex_row][/flex_row]

THE VERDICT: This one’s a keeper! I can see myself wearing it alone with jeans and jewelry to go out to dinner with Paul this summer, and it will also make a nice layering piece for spring.

WHBM Ruched Cap Sleeve Tee

top (S) // jeans (28) // sandals (7.5)

This top is so cute, with a flattering scoop neck and cap sleeves, and such a gorgeous color. It’s soft and comfortable, but the ruching on the sides definitely gives it a body-con fit.

It comes in several other colors and a zebra print, and it’s 24.5″ long from shoulder to hem.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

THE VERDICT: I was down a few pounds the day I tried this top on, and I like how it fits as I stand here in the mirror. But I know myself, and I just don’t think I’d end up wearing it. I sent it back, but now I’m thinking I should have kept it as a layering piece…  what would you do?

WHBM Ultimate Sculpt High Rise Bootcut Jeans

tank // jeans // sandals

This silhouette doesn’t seem particularly fashion-forward to me, but the higher rise does these apart from the bootcuts and flares of the early aughts. I think that helps keep them more relevant, and I also love this crisp white wash.

I’m hoping as longer and more relaxed pants come back in style, these leg-lengthening flares will follow. There is no doubt that they are supremely flattering, and they tend to work well for most (if not all?) body types.

My only complaint is that the fabric is kind of thick and stiff, but they do give some as you move around, and they’re not show-through.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

THE VERDICT: Undecided. They’re definitely flattering, but I’m afraid I won’t reach for them. That said, they could be a nice option to have, even if I don’t wear them a ton.

WHBM Mockneck Pullover

top (S) // jeans (6) // sandals

Now this is a body-con top that I love, and I’m not sure why I feel more comfortable in it than the ruched top. Maybe it’s the darker color or the higher neckline, but I think this sweater is so sophisticated and chic.

[flex_row][/flex_row]

It also has a really pretty textured knit, but you can’t see the details very well in these pictures. This top is 23 1/4″ from shoulder to hem, and it also comes in petite.

THE VERDICT: This one is definitely a keeper!

WHBM Everyday Soft Denim High Rise Flare Jeans

jeans (6) // tank (S) // sandals

Yep! Another pair of bootcuts… these are realllly soft and flexible denim. SO comfortable. And they have the same fantastic fit as the white pair above, but with smaller rear pockets, which I much prefer.

I also like the lived-in dark wash and the subtle whiskering at the hips and behind the knee, although it’s definitely a throwback to the bootcuts jeans I was wearing 12 years ago. It feels just a little too soon to go back to that, although I admit, I do love these.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

THE VERDICT: Undecided. I just don’t know that I’m ready to go back to this look quite yet. My eye is finally adjusting to the straighter, cropped fit, and I’m liking that a lot for spring and summer.

WHBM Reversible Dual Neck Cami

tank (S) // jeans (6) // sandals

White House Black Market always does these reversible camis, and you’re basically getting two tops in one, which is kind of nice.

I really like this floral print, although you can see the zebra behind it. I think that is intentional, and it doesn’t bother me, but I don’t love how when you reverse it, you can see about an inch of the floral print below the zebra print.

[flex_row][/flex_row]

Here, you can see the two side by side. I like this top a lot, I just wish it wasn’t QUITE so long. (It’s 26″ long.) At least, it front tucks okay.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERDICT: I might keep this. I think it would be really cute layered under a that J.Crew Going Out Blazer that I styled on Thursday.

WHBM Limited-Edition Make Herstory Printed Tee

tee (S) // jeans (6) // sandals

I love the idea behind this tee, and I just like a graphic tee. It’s got a chic French girl thing going on, although I’m not sure French women wear graphic tees? What would I know, I’ve never been!

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

Unfortunately, it is rather thin, and it also runs small. I think I’d prefer the fit of the medium.

THE VERDICT: Probably returning this one. I may or may not reorder in the medium.

WHBM High-Rise Rolled Hem 5-Inch Shorts

shorts (6) // sweater (S) // sandals

Oh, boy… let’s just say there is a lot of photoshop action going on in these pictures. I’ve been using self tanner, but I don’t think it does much for me in pictures.

While I typically prefer a 3 — 4″ inseam in my denim shorts, I like this 5″ length for dressier shorts. In fact, I might have this exact pair saved from last year. I need to check. They’re looking awfully familiar all of the sudden, lol!

They’re a nice medium-weight fabric and aren’t too see-through. I just wish they were a little narrower in the leg opening, but that’s a personal problem. I have wider hips and thin legs, so this is my challenge with shorts. One of these days, I’m going to have a pair tailored and see if I like the results.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERDICT: Keeping, as long as I don’t already have a pair!

LOFT Try-Ons

LOFT has up to 40% off spring styles right now, with a few exclusions…

LOFT Ribbed Polo Sweater Tee

sweater // jeans (6) // sandals

The polo style sweaters are trending this spring, and I like this ribbed version a lot. It’s a nice change of pace from the crewneck sweater tees.

This one is 100% cotton, and it’s quite short at 22 1/2″ long, so I might size up to be on the safe side.

Unfortunately, this sweater is NOT included in the sale, but keep an eye on it. It will be on sale eventually… it’s LOFT, after all.

Repeat after me: “Never pay full price at LOFT.”

Very good.

THE VERDICT: Returning, and when it goes on sale, I’ll try the medium.

LOFT Ribbed Polo Sweater Tee

sweater // jeans // slides

This is the same sweater tee in white, but I don’t love it as much in the lighter color. Again, it’s quite short, and it’s also on the thinner side.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

THE VERDICT: Probably returning. I think I’d get more wear out of the black.

LOFT Drawstring Hem Denim Jacket

jacket (40% off; size S) // jeans // mules

I recommended this jacket as an alternative to the olive bomber I styled a couple weeks ago, so I thought I’d order it and check it out for myself.

Whelp… it’s a bit underwhelming, to say the least!

It’s really short and boxy and wide and doesn’t hang open and show my top the way it appears to on the website model. It’s also a fairly thick, stiff fabric that isn’t very comfortable, and I’m not sure what is up with those gigantic sleeves.

THE VERDICT: Returning, and I’m sorry if you ordered it on my recommendation and don’t like it either. Maybe it worked for some of you???

LOFT Striped Boatneck Tee

tee (30% off; size S) // jeans (28) // slides

This is a classic stripe 3/4-sleeve top that makes a great spring wardrobe staple for many women. The fabric is a nice, medium-weight 100% cotton, and it’s 24″ long.

I want to say every woman needs one of these, but I’m sure some of you will inform me that you don’t wear horizontal stripes, and that’s okay. You don’t have to. But if you’re a stripe-lover, like me, order one of these now while it’s on sale!

THE VERDICT: Keeping! But as a disclaimer, I would front-tuck it with these cropped jeans, or wear longer jeans to provide better vertical balance.

Banana Republic Try-Ons

Banana Republic is doing a Friends & Family Event, and you can save 50% off your purchase, even new arrivals!

Banana Republic Dolman Top

top // jeans // sandals

I styled this top earlier in the week with black kick flares, but I have these pictures, so I thought I’d include them since it shows this top with white jeans. Plus, I realize not everyone reads every one of my posts. I often forget that!

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERDICT: Keeping! This is such a nice, versatile top for dressing up or down, and wearing alone or as a base layer.

Banana Republic Cotton-Hemp Long Cardigan Sweater

cardigan // tee // jeans // sandals

I can’t remember if I shared this cardigan or not, so I’m sharing it again because I really like it. I think it’s such a great neutral color for spring, and the fabric is breathable without being super thin. I love the contrasting buttons and shorter length, and this is a great time to snag one, while it’s 50% off!

Here it is in the copper clay. It’s not quite as bright as it appears in these pictures, but it’s definitely more of a warm rust. I might like it for fall, but I definitely prefer the Brazilian Sand for spring.

THE VERDICT: Keeping the Brazilian Sand, returning Copper Clay.

Banana Republic Cotton-Hemp V-Neck Sweater

sweater // similar jeans // flats

I shared this sweater in my last Try-On Haul in another color, but I returned it and ordered this green… and then the Friends & Family Sale started. Blergh. I considered returning and re-ordering, but that’s a lot of work, so I guess I’ll just enjoy it.

I love the neckline, the body length, and the fit through the body; and I think this sage green is so fresh and pretty for spring.

THE VERDICT: Keeping!

Everlane Try-Ons

I’ve got a few items from Everlane to share with you. Unfortunately, my favorites are almost sold out.

Everlane The Clog

jeans // clogs

I’ll cut to the chase. I love these clogs. I had my eye on them for a while, and I never pulled the trigger, and when I finally decided I wanted them, they were selling out. I ordered the 7, on a wing and a prayer. (I usually wear 7.5 or 8 in clogs.)

Imagine my delight when they actually fit! Okay, barely, but I think they’re okay. I just love the woven leather for spring, and a clog makes such a nice transition shoe.

VERDICT: Keeping! And if you can manage to snag your size, I would say size down half, not a whole size, as I did.

Everlane The Mariner Sweater

sweater c/o  similar jeans // flats

This sweater is a little heavier than most of the styles I’m ordering right now, but it’s a really nice quality, and it makes a nice transition piece for those of us living in cooler climates. It’s 55% wool, 45% cotton, so be aware of that, if you’re allergic, but it’s very soft and feels nice on.

[flex_row]  [/flex_row]

I like the v-neck with loop and button closure and the textured rib detailing. I just wish it didn’t have the drop shoulder, but otherwise, it’s really pretty for chilly spring days.

It also comes in camel and a red and white stripe, but I think this blue is such a gorgeous color. It’s begging to be paired with white.

Trunk Club Unboxing

I haven’t had a box from Trunk Club in a while, but I had some credits, so I ordered one. It was hit or miss, but here are a few of the highlights.

7 For All Mankind Josefina High Waist Boyfriend Jeans

at Nordstrom // at 7FAM // at Evereve

I’m loving the faded light wash on these slim-fitting boyfriend jeans. They have a 24 1/2″ cuffed inseam (it’s 27″ if you un-cuff them) and a 10″ front rise; and they’re made of a stretchy and soft 82% cotton, 17% rayon, 1% elastane.

Since they’re a slim boyfriend, they aren’t too relaxed in the thighs. I like how they give a nod to the straighter, cropped styles that are trending, but they taper a bit, which I find a little more flattering, personally.

[flex_row][/flex_row]

VERDICT: Keeping; I think these will be nice to have this summer.

Franco Sarto Jolee Ankle Strap Flat

at Nordstrom // at Macy’s // at DSW // at Amazon

I thought these flats were really fun. The square toe and quilted leather are both big trends right now, and they make a nice transition shoe. Madewell has a very similar pair that I’ve had my eye on, so when these came in my Trunk, I decided to keep them.

THE VERDICT: Keeping!

Madewell Crewneck Short Sleeve Bodysuit

 bodysuit // jeans // flats

I would never have ordered a bodysuit, but since it came, I thought I’d give it a chance. I like the cut of the neck and sleeves, and the fabric is soft. I can definitely appreciate the minimalist vibe and how it pairs with high rise pants, but… ugh!

Even though these pants aren’t tight at the waist, it gives me a muffin-top. Maybe if they were a higher rise, it would work better. As you can see, my natural waist is a lot higher than the waistband on these 10″ rise jeans.

Let’s just say, I would not be wearing this without a layer on top.

VERDICT: This top went back. Even though it could make a good layering piece, I am too old and cranky to futz with snaps… down there.

Vince Tapered Cuff Pull-On Pants

blouse // pants // pumps

This is me giving tapered trousers the good old college try. I even tried tucking my top in all the way around, just for kicks and giggles.

And you know what? It isn’t terrible… but it would definitely take some getting used to.

These pants are really nice quality, but they are way more than I want to spend, considering my lifestyle just doesn’t warrant dress pants very often. But if you need professional work wear, and they fit your budget, you might want to give them a try!

THE VERDICT: These pants went back.

Amazon Fashion Try-Ons

And finally, a few Amazon Fashion Finds…

Amazon Essentials Brushed Tech Popover Hoodie

hoodie // leggings // sneakers

If you need budget-friendly activewear, this top is really soft and comfortable, and I like the fit a lot. It’s fairly body-con, but it’s not super tight.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERIDCT: Keeping! It’s perfect for spring walks and casual days at home.

Amazon Essentials Studio Convertible Hoodie

hoodie // leggings // sneakers

This one is a little thicker and not as soft and comfortable as the one above, and the hood is kind of heavy. That’s a pet peeve of mine with hoodies. That said, I like the fit through the body and the shorter length.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

THE VERDICT: Returning.

Daily Ritual Supersoft Terry Funnel-Neck Tunic

tunic // leggings // sneakers

And this is just a big, fat no! My daughter was in the room when I tried this on, and she had a heyday making fun of it.

I appreciate the attempt at covering the lady bits, but it’s just not flattering. I think it would look better if it was the same length all the way around. It’s soft and comfy, though!

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

THE VERDICT: Buh-bye!

Soluna Swim Sunset Scoop Neck Dress

dress (S) // slides (8)

Now, this is cute! This dress is definitely coming to Florida with me. It can be a swimsuit coverup, or a casual out-to-dinner dress.

[flex_row][/flex_row]

It’s soft and comfortable, and it’s not terribly low-cut under the arms, although I think I might like it better if I had the straps taken up a bit. I love the smocked detail at the waist.

VERDICT: Definitely keeping!

Daily Ritual Standard-Fit Girlfriend Jeans

jeans (bleach wash, size 6) // stripe top // sandals

These jeans were a very pleasant surprise! For the price point, you really can’t beat them. For one thing, they’re very comfortable, which is something I can rarely say for cheaper denim. I was afraid they would bag out, but I wore them for a few hours one afternoon this week, and they held up really well.

I also think they have a fairly flattering fit for the straight cropped style.

[flex_row][/flex_row]

THE VERDICT: Keeping! It will be nice to have a less expensive pair of jeans to wear around the house and do things where I might not want to wear my premium denim.

And finally, one lone Nordstrom item…

Treasure & Bond Twist Detail T-Shirt

tee // jeans (bleach wash, size 6) // sandals

I had this tee last year in a tie dye, and I wore it a ton, so when I saw that they brought it back in some other colors this season, I grabbed one. It’s a great price too, at $20!

It is cut high enough under the arms that it doesn’t gape or show your bra, and the twist detail is such a nice touch. It’s true to size!

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERDICT: Keeping!

And oh my word, that’s a wrap! Every time I get to the end of one of these Try-On posts, I feel like I just birthed a baby.

I know I sped through some of these, so if I forgot any details, or you have any questions, I’ll do my best to answer in the comments!

  1. Hi Jo-Lynne! Awesome post! I love the Seven jeans with the black shoes from your trunk. So cute! What is the black top (it looks like it may have tab sleeves) you are wearing?

      1. Yes! That’s the one! Thank you for the link. I just ordered that entire outfit including the shoes! Hoping I like it as much on me as I love it on you. Thanks for inspiration!

  2. Hi Jolynne- My favorites are both pairs of the WHBM bootcut flare jeans. THEY’RE super FLATTERING! I have a similar pair i wore out to dinner with FRIENDS last nIght. I’m looking for a white pair so i might order those to try. I also like the REVERSIBLE zebra tank but don’t think i’d like thE floral fabric showing at the hem. 🤷‍♀️ BTW, these comments are all in caps – i cannot change it & the comments box is still hard to find.

  3. Hi Jolynne! I thought I’d give you my 2 cents on the WHBM things. Maybe you’d like the flare better than the bootcut. They’re tighter in the legs and they might feel fresher to you. I like the white jeans for you, but I’d size down. They’ll definitely relax and they are looking a little big in the legs at the moment. I find the WHBM jeans are way more flattering when the fit is snug. The shorts are super cute on you, but I always think you look better in shorter shorts. Last, the camisole is cute! I like both sides. I’d tuck it in with high rise jeans and wear it with a blazer–so cute! You’re right…it’s super long! (They’ve changed the cut. I have one from several years ago that is shorter. It’s one of my favorite pieces!) You could always have it cut off and hemmed and you could have the layer that shows cut so it doesn’t.

  4. I really liked this try-on. I definitely have some items I will try. Loving the mock neck top from WHBM. Also the flat black shoes are adorable! I don’t think I can wear them with my high arches, though. I am going to try the Daily Ritual jeans, but they will be longer on me, probably full length. As usual, I appreciate all the work you put into these.

  5. Loved, loved this post! Thinking about trying those bleach wash jeans and that gray tee. But I really wanted to comment to say you look ***AH-MAZING*** in those Vince pants and green top! I know it’s a lot for pants you won’t wear a ton, but I wanted you to know that it was by far the best outfit you featured. You looked gorgeous in it!!!

  6. I really enjoy your posts! Which black top are you wearing with the Seven jeans that came in your Trunk Club? I’m referring to the last photo in that section that isn’t mentioned. It’s really cute! I’d love to know the brand and where you got it. Thank you!

  7. The olive jacket looks great until you put it on, too boxy!
I think that you should get a pair of boot cuts and make a plan to WEAR them. They are great on you and will add a newer update to your usual skinnies. Actually, these are skinnies with wider lower legs! Work with the length. You don’t have to wear just heels and they don’t have to touch the floor. No rules.
Agree : never pay full price at LOFT, also add Ann Taylor

  8. Well thank you for the good laugh–DYING!!! “I am too old and cranky to futz with snaps… down there.” 100% agreed! Loving your hair a little longer and maybe more layers? Super cute! I tried the 7FAM Josephina’s from the NAS last year, but they were HUGE, and I’m wondering if I had a mis-sized pair. Might have to give those another shot!

  9. I was glad to see you liked the jeans from Amazon. I need some new jeans and I like that price. Unfortunately they don’t have my size in any wash 🙁

      1. Using my IPHONE 11 and CHrome bRowser. I don’t think ive COMMENTED On your new blog site though, maybe just once beFore. so maybe thats It? IDK- aFter teacHing onlIne for The past year i feEl so tech savvy now So why cant I Seem to navigate your new blog site? Typing these commeNts is really frustrating too beCause tyr auto-CORRECT ISN’T WORKING and i see thet among all tye capitals theres also misspelled words thet i cant go bavk and fix. Werid right? This looks like im illiterate 😆
Oh well- im sure If its working fur EVERYBODY else it must be my problem. Ill goigle iphone issies and see wHat can Find..

        1. Odd. I’m also on chrome on an iPhone. I know you said you haven’t commented on the new design yet but maybe try clearing your cache? It still might be caching an older design.

          1. I will try that. I went to ANOTHER blog and left a comment and did not have any CAP isSues or auto-correct problems, so it’S probably My connection to your blog. I’M also not getting your emAil replieS (i get your daily eMail and blog post but i purposely cane here to see if you had RESPONDED to my COMMENT from eArlier.)

  10. So many bloggers say that a black/white stripe tee is an essential, but am I the only one who feels like I just escaped from prison when I put one on? lol

  11. You have to keep those WHBM jeans! They look so good – and I know a stylist that can make them fashionable (it’s you)!

  12. Wow! what a try on haul; love both pair of the WHBM pants on you especially the white ones; fit and style look classy. You brought me back a few years with the white ribbed polo. Way back in the 60’s (telling my age) I had a similar top but with no collar but it was ribbed like that one and we called it a “poor boy” top in the day, love it.

  13. Hi Jolynne! About the Daily Ritual Girlfriend Jeans-how much stretch do they have? Do they run true to size, etc? Thanks 🙂

  14. I’d say you had more hits than misses in this try on haul. As you’ve reminded us, if you don’t love something and aren’t positive that you will reach for it, don’t add it to your closet. Like you, I’m not ready to jump on the full length flare legged jeans bandwagon. Any top or dress that is the least bit body con does not get a spot in my closet. I am going to order the jeans from Amazon with the hope that I will be able to wear them during the warm months. We actually have gotten up to 87 today – YUCK! We will be back in the 60’s the later part of the upcoming week, thank goodness. Enjoy the rest of your day!

  15. Great try-on. I might try the Seven jeans, they look really good. Ive tried on so, so many jeans these past few weeks attempting to find a pair in the new non-skinny cropped look –but I feel like I look terrible in this new style (I’m tall so that also makes it hard to get the right length on the crop- regular lengths are too short, talls sometimes too long). I need the shape of my skinnies or I look like I’m wearing long bags on my legs. If you find any that run long please post!

  16. Hi.
Can you tell me more about the treasure and bond slides? Are they comfy and true to size or should I size up a half?
    thank you

  17. SORRY ABOUT YET ANOTHER COMMENT HERE……i PROMISE I’M NOT A FREAK 🙂 i CLEARED MY IPHONE CAHCE AND WANTED TO SEE IF THAT CHANGES THINGS BUT I’M STILL ONLY SEEING ALL CAPS. uGH- AND THE CURSOR WON’T MOVE BACK TO WHAT i’VE ALREADY TYPED SO i CANT CORRET MISPELLED WORDS. I GIVE UP……. I WILL TRY TO COMMENT ON MY LAPTOP NEXT TIME AND SEE IF THAT CHANGSE THINGS.

  18. Jo-Lynne, the WHBM shorts
—yes you do have a pair (in a few colors?) as well as the white. I just did the same thing…thinking “I like those”, and remembered I bought 2 pair last year when you styled them. I’m still thinking I could be a size smaller–I may end up buying them again. I have the thin leg issue as well, and thought they looked better than most shorts I had previously tried.

  19. Just to add to the haul…
This has become my “rule of thumb” navigating new style jeans
The larger leg bottoms do require a more form fitting top as to not look sloppy.
A more more tailored leg looks best on thin legs, and the flare needs a heel of some kind.

So far –so good for me thanks for your help!

  20. So glad to see longer pant lenghts and especially the longer slightly boot or small flare cut come back. It really is the most body flattering shaped pant! It seems everyone looks best in this style.

  21. I absolutely LOVE the Franco Sarto black ankle wrap flats. They are definitely a statement shoe that makes any outfit look elevated. Very French looking.

  22. Loved so much of the items in this post! WHBM has been a favorite of mine for years. Half my closet is WHBM. I just ordered the gray tee and the Mr. Big Slide in nude. Thanks for another great post!!
