Welcome back to 26 Days of Fall Fashion! It’s hard to believe it’s already Day 5! Today I’m styling a dressed-up casual outfit for early fall — bootcut jeans, a lightweight cashmere cocoon cardigan over a double layer cami, and suede block heeled sandals.
I hope y’all had a nice Labor Day weekend. I accomplished so much, and it feels good to have everything organized. Today we start our cyber schooling endeavor, and I’m excited to dive in and see how it goes.
This is the sort of outfit I’d wear to meet friends for lunch or to a blogging event. In fact, I have a one-day blogging conference to attend in just a few weeks, and this will be perfect for that.
I picked up this Cashmere Kimono Cardigan during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale at 30% off. With the lightweight knit and 3/4-length sleeves, it’s perfect for early fall. It has a fabulous drape and comes in 5 luxurious colors. I was drawn to the Grey Medium Heather, but now I’m crushing on that Beige Oatmeal Heather color.
Here’s a look at the back. It says it fits sizes 6-14, and I would add, it is probably best on those of us who are 5’4″ or taller. I’m 5’5″ and I wouldn’t want it much longer than this.
For a less expensive cocoon cardigan that I love equally as much (and it comes in sizes), check out the Leith Shawl Collar Cocoon Cardigan. I’d be tempted to order that Tan Etherea Heather if they had it in my size. (By the way, size down in this one. I have the small in a coral color that sold out.)
My cami is from White House Black Market, but sizes are limited. (I’m wearing the medium but wonder if I should have sized down.) Topshop makes a similar one for $30.
I love the double layer cami. So many light tops are see-through these days, but this has great coverage. It is a bit bare in the back and shoulders, so I will probably wear it most often under a cardi or jacket, but it’s nice that it can be worn alone if I want to.
I accessorized with silver. I like how this layered necklace fills in the front of the top, and I stacked some of my favorite designer bracelets with my watch.
The baby bootcut jeans came in a Stitch Fix many moons ago, but I’ve hung onto them because they have a fabulous fit and feel. They’re super soft and stretchy, but they don’t bag out. Bootcut jeans have been slowly making a comeback. They didn’t really catch on last winter as I expected them too, but I think we’ll see more of them this year.
I debated wearing booties, but in the end I went with these Kate Spade block heeled sandals in keeping with the early fall theme. I’ll have plenty of time to wear boots when it gets colder. My Steve Madden Carrson Sandals would also have worked, but I liked the black with this outfit rather than the sand that I have. They come in black suede though!
The tricky thing about bootcut jeans is getting the length right with the shoes. These sandals are the perfect height for these jeans. You want the hem of your pant leg to come within an inch of the ground, but definitely not touching the ground.
Finally, I carried my R Minkoff Moto Hobo from last year. I am so glad they’ve kept this bag in stock. I love it for fall and winter. It also comes in a super pretty Putty color as well as a bold Port and pale Vintage Pink.
My husband was feeling creative with his photo editing. I’m not loving the desaturated effect, but we’ll work with it this time!
The great thing about this outfit is that it can be adapted in so many ways. Just about any color cardigan would work with a cami and bootcut jeans, and of course you can substitute skinnies for the bootcut jeans or even dress pants if you need a work wear look. Slim ponte ankle pants or stretch trousers would be fabulous with this and would make it work appropriate.
I hope you all have a fantastic Tuesday!!

Nice post! You look fantastic! I do love that bag!
I LOVE this outfit!!!
Great outfit!
Such a cute outfit!! You suggest sizing down in the cami?
I had a small and it pulled a bit around the chest, so I exchanged for a medium, but it seems a bit large, lol. So…. it’s a hard call. I think it depends on how “well endowed” you are. 🙂
Love the bootcut jeans! Makes you look taller. Now I need to find a pair with a higher rise…
I do feel like bootcut jeans make us look taller – especially when worn with heels. There are lots of high waisted versions out there right now.
Over here in Germany we also have about 60° in the morning and during day up to 80°F, so this is a great outfit and the right choice for taking off the cami when its getting warm.
And it is perfect for you! 🙂
Thank you! That sounds like my ideal weather. 🙂
You look so gorgeous today!!
Love the outfit! Do you feel that the cashmere is pretty good quality? Alot of positive reviews, but one reviewer said it was thin and had started pilling just hanging in her closet.
It is thin, which I kind of like because it’s nice for in between season. I can’t say for sure how it will wear, but I know that Halogen cashmere I’ve had in the past does tend to pill.
We’ve been online schooling for the last 5 years (3 kids) and love it! The flexibility, efficiency and time together makes it worth it for us. I’m sure with your teaching background, after the initial learning curve, it will be a piece of cake. I think you’ll really enjoy the extra time with your daughter. When she’s done with school early, she can be your photographer! Love your outfit. Keep up the great work!
That’s great to hear!
Love this outfit. Very typical of what I wear all fall and winter (I live in South Texas). And, you look beautiful!
Thanks, Catherine!
Love the bootcut jeans – very slenderizing (at the right length, as you said). I ordered that sweater in the heather gray after seeing it on your blog. Love it! Although I am only 5’3″, I didn’t feel overwhelmed because of the way it comes up in the front.
This and the Chantelle sports bra – which I bought three of and absolutely LOVE, are the only things I didn’t return from my sale purchases. Thank you, thank you for recommending that bra. I had been searching for one for ages and never found a well fitting, comfortable one until now.
I’m so glad they worked out for you! (And good to know about the height and length of sweater.)
That cardigan is gorgeous and perfect for fall!!
Thanks, lady! xo
Hoping today went smoothly for you and your daughter!
And since I can’t help but play proofreader… I doubt you meant to say you’ll mostly wear the cami under a cami or jacket 😉
GAH! Thanks! Good catch. I will still never understand how I can read a post 55 times and still miss typos.
I feel bad pointing them out, but I know i’d want to fix them. I’m always surprised how many other people have commented and presumably not noticed. Obviously you aren’t the only one!
This is a fabulous outfit and that picture at the top of the post is gorgeous! I predict it will be pinned a ton!!
Thanks, Nancy! xo
I had to chuckle when I saw your second photo. The tag on the side of the sweater is showing, and my OCD habit of always removing any tag that might show reared up and made me laugh!
Oh that made me crazy but I didn’t have time to photoshop it out!
It just proves you’re busy, and human, like the rest of us!
Those jeans look GREAT on you. Very slimming. Now I want baby boots.
Thank you! I really do like the narrower bootcut.
You look fabulous in this outfit! I love the look of bootcuts for an occasional change, but I seriously struggle there with the right length. I only have one pair that is long enough for any type of heel, but I have yet to find one I like with them. I did grab that tan cocoon cardigan and would love to try this if I could just find the right shoes! 😉
Most of my heels are about the same height – 3 or 4 inches – and I will have my bootcut jeans hemmed to get them the right length. 🙂
This outfit is LOVELY on you. The accessories work perfectly. Something about a bootcut jean on your body type – it really balances you out and makes you look tall(er) and slim(mer) than ever! (They’re Jennifer Aniston’s favorite type of jean!) And that cardigan is a must have…
Thanks! I’ve always loved a bootcut. 🙂
I don’t comment very often, but I LOVE this outfit on you! I want to recreate it immediately. 🙂 I have struggled to find a good bootcut jean that fits right. I’ve been on the hunt this fall though and this gives me extra incentive to keep looking. Thanks!
It’s tricky, but there are a lot out there right now. Good luck! 🙂
I love this outfit. It is so casual and comfy looking yet chic and dressy too. Love the way you styled it with the silver jewelry, black bag and sandals. You look amazing! – Amy

Thanks, Amy. xo
Love this outfit! You look great in bootcut jeans. I know you love skinnies, but the boot cuts just look so good! I think they balance you out more.
That sweater looks so cozy too!
Perfect casual outfit.
I really love the cardi!!! It’s perfect for business casual or girls day out!!!
