Hello and cheers to Friday! Today I’ve got a new spring outfit that could be work wear for some settings, and it’s something I’d wear to church or out to dinner.
This black and white portofino shirt is from Express, and I really like it. I don’t usually wear button-down shirts because they tend gape across the chest, or the collared neckline seems masculine to me, but this one is perfect because of the flattering way it creates a v-neckline and the lack of gapeage.
I really think gapeage should be a word.
I wore this shirt with black jeans one night to go to a musical in Philly, but this time I paired it with white, and I added a fun pop of color with these turquoise pumps.
I carried an off-white bag because I like how it blends into the neutral tones of the outfit.
For jewelry, I went with my 3-disc necklace and ball drop earrings. I like how this necklace fills a v-neckline and goes with so many different earrings.
This shirt is on the longer side, so I did a front-tuck to create balance. For size reference, I have the medium. Express seems to be cut for younger women so I always need to size up in their tops.
The jeans are my go-to Paige Verdugo ankle skinnies, and the shoes are from last year and unfortunately are pretty much gone. You could also shop your closet for a different color shoe — another bright color or a pastel would work equally well. Anything goes with a black and white outfit!

Oh I agree gapeage is a mare haha! Have a great weekend x
I’m with you on button downs/collared shirts…I have the same issue. I love this look though. Great print on the top and I love the mint shoes with it!
This top looks great on you, and what fun colored pumps! I’m loving this spring look!

Didn’t she??? When we saw that venue, we knew it would be perfect for this outfit. 🙂
I had to laugh when you said “gapage”. My husband loves to watch survival shows, and he is also a Philosophy professor so has a thing about words and word meanings, etc. All of these survivalists talk about “cordage”, rather than saying cord. It dives my husband nuts. Ha, ha. So we started coming up with all sorts of words that have the “age” or “adge” sound at the end of the work, like sewage, patronage, and made up words like “coinage”, and “shoeage”. Your word will definitely go into our new dictionary! Ha, ha, ha. Love your outfit. so pretty and perfect for this crazy weather we are having. Hope you have a great weekend! – Amy

Cute pumps! Love the color!
I’m a fan of black and white and I love the added pop of color. Enjoy your meet and greet. My daughter and I are both fans of Full House and Fuller House. How fun that will be.
Have a great weekend
Woo hoo for bright pumps!!! They just look so spectacular with this outfit. I remember the first time I twisted my mom’s arm (the 80+ model on my blog) into wearing red heels with her black & white dress—she got so many compliments on it. I think it becomes such a focal point.
I have turquoise sandals, and this would be fabulous for a casual look too—thanks for a great inspiration!!
XOXO

This is so pretty, Jo-Lynne, and I love the pop of color from your shoes! I would have never thought to use a handbag that was not stark white, but you make it work. Sounds like you and the girls will have fun at the event later today. I hope the weather is nice! We were in the 40’s this morning, which I love for sleeping with the windows open. It will get up into the low 70’s later and it’s rather breezy. I’ll take it for sure! Have an awesome day!
I was desperately trying to find those Sam Edelman shoes in that color a couple of weeks ago. I couldn’t find them on my size anywhere. I ended up with a pair from Michael Kors from Macys in that exact color and the heel was 3 inches rather than 4, which worked better for my old feet.
Thank you! How did I not see that??? I actually looked at Macy’s. I think it’s b/c they weren’t pictured in the teal color on the search page. For anyone following, here they are: https://rstyle.me/n/c3kq6rgthw
That pop of color is fabulous! Great look.
Love the shirt! I hear you about the weather too. We are FINALLY seeing some spring like temps up here – Woohoo! Noticed that everyone was pretty Blah at work, so when we had our team meeting yesterday I went to the Dollarama and bought bubble wands for everyone. It really did lighten the mood! 🙂 Hang in there!
So… this was an awesome tutorial for me! You helped me figure out what makes a button up shirt a little more feminine ( the v neck), what kind of jewelry to wear, and how to take a classic look and make it pop with bright colored shoes and a handbag in an unexpected shade that actually looks perfect with black and white.
I just love how helpful your blog is to me and how that even if I can’t afford a certain item, you create looks that are easy to copy at any price point. I adore you and wish I could purchase every single one of the things you post about, but your blog is always worth reading because I learn so much and feel like I am hanging out with a friend.
Have a fantastic weekend!
Love the pop of color!!
Love the black and white outfit! Gapeage should definitely be a word. I have the same issues. Double sided tape has come to the rescue more than once. Ha ha
Hi Jo-Lynne! Wonderful outfit! I just love that white jeans are so versatile. I like your necklace. I’m trying to learn to wear more “dainty” jewelry. For some reason I gravitate toward bigger, bolder pieces, but sometimes some small and dainty really works better. And it seems to be very trendy right now to go with dainty jewelry. I’m working on it!
Have a great weekend!

Love the outfit and your pics were beautifully done by Alison. Looks like you were ready for some “Live Music and Cocktails”. I recently ordered some petite jeans and tshirt from Express and anxious to get them and see how the quality and fit work out.
Thank you! Yes, Alison really outdid herself on these. I thought the backdrop was super fun. 🙂
Love this outfit on you! The top is very flattering and a great print. The pop of turquoise is so fun! I have acquired several colored flats so I try something similar soon now that I have white jeans that fit! (Ann Taylor petite, TTS – scored during a flash sale woohoo!)
Awesome! So glad you found some that work.
