2024 Fall Accessory Trends

Fall Fashion Trends Week is coming to an end, but this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to fall fashion here on the blog. I can’t wait to dive into some of these trends and start incorporating them into my wardrobe and upcoming blog posts.

Today we’re talking about some of the biggest handbag and accessory trends for Fall 2024!

Accessories such as jewelry, eyewear, and belts are one of the easiest and most affordable ways to update your wardrobe. Even though handbags can be more of an investment, the cost per wear works itself out over time. But the best part about accessories and handbags is, they always fit!

Well, almost always. I suppose some bracelets can pose fit issues, but even then, you don’t usually outgrow them when you have a few too many tacos on vacation… not that I would know anything about that!

Anyway, these are some of the prominent trends I’m seeing in accessories and handbags for this fall season! As always, this is not an exhaustive list, but these are a few of the big ones that caught my eye.

Handbag & Accessory Trends for Fall 2024

The widgets at the end of each section provide more examples of each trend for your shopping convenience, and I tried to include a variety of retailers and price points. You can click through on those for more details. As always, I appreciate it when you support my work by shopping through my links!

#1. Slouchy Shoulder Bags

Slouchy bags are trending, but the ones that look most current to my eye have structured bottoms and a slouchy closure. In other words, they’re relaxed without being totally boho-slouchy.

Bucket bags are still going strong, and I’m also seeing totes and convertible crossbody bags in relaxed silhouettes. That’s not to suggest that all other styles look dated, but these are the styles that are “having a moment” this season.

Style Tip: Make sure you have a good shoe pairing or two to go with any new new handbag purchase!

#2. Oversized Clutches and Wristlets

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, oversized clutches and wristlets are also trending this fall. These may not be practical for everyone, but I find myself needing less on a daily basis and reaching for my smaller bags, so I can see times when it would be nice to just carry a wristlet. It’s also a nice option for casual dinners out, rather than a crossbody.

#3. Statement Jewelry

Moving on to jewelry, the delicate layered looks are still around, but all the buzz this season is about statement jewelry coming back in style. I’m seeing wavy, sculptural earrings, cuff bracelets, and chunky necklaces hitting all my favorite retailers. Supposedly, silver is having a moment, but I still see plenty of gold out there, and I think both look current when they’re current silhouettes.

#4. Oversized Eyewear + Top Bar Frames

I’m seeing “go big or go home” as the mantra for eyewear this season, which surprised me because I thought the smaller frames were still on their way back, but I also saw cat eye shapes mentioned. Either way, bold looks are definitely where trends are headed. If you really want to be fashion-forward with your glasses, top bar frames are having a moment.

Honestly, I feel like with eyewear, almost anything goes anymore. I personally wear what I feel looks best on my face, but I rounded up a variety of both sunglasses and optical frames that are trending, if you’re looking for inspiration.

#5. Belts Are Back!

While belts are a classic wardrobe piece, there was a time when they really weren’t a thing on the fashion scene. Even when we were all front-tucking our oversized tops into skinny jeans, we usually neglected to add a belt.

Nowadays, I feel nekkid if I wear an outfit that exposes the button on my jeans and I don’t have a belt on. I’ve been lax this summer because they feel heavy and fussy for the heat, but I will definitely be incorporating belts into my fall outfits whenever possible. I love how it adds a point of interest and provides another opportunity inject your personal style into your look.

Which of these trends do you plan to lean into this season?

  1. I would like to incorporate belts into my Fall wardrobe. What colors and styles we you suggest to get me started?

  2. Loving all the new trends , like you said anything goes this fall. I am all over the place on how to put it all together but going to follow your lead. 😊 Enjoy the last bit of the kids being home. Sweet times!

  3. I love belts, but have a hard time finding ones that don’t fall apart on me after a few wears. Even the “genuine leather” belts don’t last long. 🙁

  4. Love the wristlets, more than the crossbody. Like you, I find myself not needing as much stuff. I love Hobo bags and have several. They are so functional and well made and last forever.

  5. None of them! I like structured handbags, small clutches, delicate jewelry, classic eyewear, and I never wear a belt (or tuck in my shirts, I’m too short waisted). LOL!!!

  6. I just wanted to thank you for another well thought out week of blog posts. I continue to appreciate all your hard work. I’ve stopped following a few other bloggers because their content has become sort of, “here, this is cute, you should buy it”. You never do that. Every post is well crafted and developed fully. Even when I’m not buying something you feature, I try to return to your blog and click through to the retailer so that (I hope) you can reap the benefits. Thank you for (trying to) keep us looking our best!

    1. Totally agree! I appreciate the “how to” aspect here. How to make the trends work, or why a particular silhouette may not flatter a certain body type. Even if I don’t buy any of the items shown, I can apply the knowledge anywhere I shop. So much more useful than just peddling products!

Also I truly appreciate trend reports. Back in the day I used to subscribe to fashion magazines, which gave me a heads up on coming trends. Since those are almost obsolete, I get most of that info here and on other blogs. But I have noticed most others try to push whatever trend the retailers are selling, whether it’s flattering or not. I appreciate that Jolynne looks at them with a more critical eye as I do.

  7. I still don’t like a belt. Especially in the Summer heat like you said. It always feels so bulky and tight to me. I like my gold link chunky necklace I bought this time last year.

  8. I appreciate all of the research you do to keep us well informed. I guess I’ll have to try wearing belts again. I have scar tissue in my belly button area that makes belts and button closures on pants rather uncomfortable. I hope the rain slacks off for Becca and her friends.

  9. I love belts and need to start wearing mine more. I have worn my raffia belt this summer because it stretches especially if I am going to eat. Lol. I love the look of the woven bags but I like organization pockets inside. For my everyday errands I will stick to a crossover. I like the clutch above.

  10. I love belts and have collected quite a few in the last couple years, which is not say there isn’t room for more. Regarding bold jewelry, I purchased a pair of Madewell earrings during the Nsale in a sculptural, soft-silver. They have some weight to them but I forget I am wearing them after a few minutes. I like having the option to wear chunky or delicate jewelry, depending on my mood and/or my outfit.

I have really enjoyed reading your trend reports this week. Well done!

  11. I’m on a river cruise in Europe, and looking in the shops there are a lot of slouchy bags and belts. I even saw some skinny jeans. Still linen and neutral colors with red here and there. So you are right on.
