I’m styling some of my favorite fall fashion trends this week, and today it’s all about cropped jackets. Cropped jackets are everywhere this season, from casual twill to leather bombers, and everything in between. They pair well with the high rises and relaxed silhouettes that are trending right now.

2024 Fashion Trend To Try: Cropped Jackets
I picked up this Caslon Crop Utility Jacket during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and it’s a really nice price point. It comes in four colors, but I was drawn to this classic navy. I like how navy pairs with lighter shades of denim, and it also looks great with the brown shoes and accessories that are having a moment this season.
This jacket has a 21″ length with a stand collar, chest envelope-bellows pockets, and a drawstring hem. The boxy, slightly oversized fit plays into the current trends, but it still has the classic appeal of a casual utility jacket. It’s made of a lightweight cotton/lyocell blend with a touch of spandex for ease of movement.

For this look, I paired this navy jacket with a simple white tee, and I’m wearing the same Madewell The Perfect Vintage Jeans as I was in yesterday’s post with the Pop of Red. The medium wash provides a pleasing contrast against the navy jacket, and they have an easy straight leg silhouette with a 29″ inseam that lands right at the top of the foot. (I’m 5’5″, for reference.)

There are so many good footwear options for this look. I almost wore my Vince Oasis sneakers with the navy accents, but I decided to add a warm contrast with brown loafer mules. They’re still in keeping with the casual vibe, but they’re a little more elevated than a sneaker. Ankle boots would be another option.
These Dolce Vita Havan Loafer Mules are 44% off, and there are lots of color choices. They have a good bit of padding in the footbed, and they’re comfortable to walk in. They make a really nice transition shoe while we’re in between seasons.

As for the rest of this look, I really wish I’d thought to bring a belt when we took these pictures; that would go a long way towards completing the outfit. It could also use a necklace, maybe a set like this one. I also don’t love this bag with these shoes; the styles don’t really align, and the shades of brown don’t complement each other very well.

It’s really hard to remember everything I want for every outfit when I’m packing the car for a photo shoot, which I usually end up doing at the last minute. I keep thinking I will get better about planning each outfit ahead of time, but that never seems to happen.
Overall, I like this outfit, but I don’t love it. The proportions look right to me, but if I put these pieces together again, I’ll add a belt and a necklace and carry a different bag.
Take Two: Crop Jacket Outfit for Fall 2024
Another cropped jacket I’m loving this fall is the Rails Easton Wool Blend Crop Jacket, which was also an #NSale purchase, and it’s on sale again for 40% off! This is an outfit you’ve probably seen before, but unlike the one above, I feel like I really nailed this one. I will definitely be wearing this as soon as the weather cools down a bit more.

Rails Easton Wool Blend Crop Jacket (S) // AllSaints Stevie Cotton T-Shirt (M) // KUT From The Kloth Meg Patch Pocket Wide Leg Jeans (6) (option) // Blondo Emmalyn Waterproof Bootie (8.5) // JW PEI Joy Faux Leather Shoulder Bag // Jenny Bird Stevie Drop Earrings // old AllSaints belt // Tom Ford sunnies (option)
A lot of you have this jacket, but if you didn’t snag one yet, it’s a really nice completer piece for cooler weather. It’s made of a heavyweight wool blend, and it has subtle Western details (another big fall 2024 fashion trend) and oversized patch pockets at the chest.
The pleat in the back and the button tabs at the waist are such nice details, and I like how it’s not quite as boxy as some, but there’s still plenty of room to layer.

I paired this jacket with the same crewneck tee as I’m wearing with the navy Caslon utility jacket in the outfit above, but I went with the grey for a little less contrast.
This 100% organic cotton tee has a really nice fit and feel, and it’s 22 1/2″ from shoulder to hem, which isn’t really cropped, but it’s definitely shorter than some. I like it because it front tucks easily without a lot of extra fabric in the back. For size reference, it runs small; I have the medium.

For this look, I went with dark wash wide leg jeans and brown ankle boots, and notice how much more complete this outfit looks with a belt. I also like how the shades of brown in the bag, boots, and belts all work together.
These KUT from the Kloth jeans have a dramatic wide leg silhouette with a 29″ ankle-length inseam, and I really like the front patch pockets and the trouser style hems. I feel like they look best with a bit of a heel, so I wore my Blondo Emmalyn Booties, which are 40% off and fully stocked! They’re also waterproof, which makes them as practical as they are stylish.

I hope this post gives you some inspiration for styling cropped jackets this season. If you’re looking to add some to your fall wardrobe, I rounded up a bunch more options for you below.

Good Morning! Loving the cropped jackets trend. I too picked up a few jackets. Being very short waisted & long legged, I was so surprised how right the look was for my body type. I’m feeling pulled together and confident with jacket completer pieces. Thanks to you! 😊
These are really nice for those of us who are high waisted
I just don’t love the short jackets and I’m short/high waisted. The Kut from the Kloth Amanda is a little longer and you have it in your links so I guess it’s considered short too? I think I just like more of my behind covered!
I included it because it’s on the shorter side, but I wouldn’t quite call it cropped. With trends that you like but don’t quite work for your body type or personal style, going shortER or longER or widER or slimmER is the way to stay current while staying true to yourself. Does that make sense?
The majority of my jackets are cropped or short. They’re a must for petite women with short legs. I have a jacket similar to the navy one in camel. I like this trend.
I sure do hope that the crud doesn’t hit you too bad. I appreciate you sharing what you didn’t like about the first outfit and how the shades of brown don’t compliment one another. There is a noticeable difference in the second outfit. The loafer mules are so pretty.
I’m loving the shorter jackets, and this one is very cute. The navy blue one is perfect for this time of year. It also comes in an Ivory color that I’m drawn to, as I wear so many different colored tops. All of the colors of this jacket are very nice.
Yeah, they have a good variety of colors!
I just love that you turned me onto jacket completer pieces. It really helped me add style to a plain outfit. All my purchases in the last year in jackets is from your post or links. Thanks.
Great post! I love wearing shorter jackets as completer pieces. I need to branch out from my comfortable denim jackets (which I have many!). I bought the olive green Rails jacket in the wool blend and I can’t wait to wear it when it gets colder! My favorite shorter jacket that I recently bought is a cropped blazer in a beautiful small scale plaid from J Crew Factory! It just screams “fall” to me!
