I had a request for outfit ideas with washed black jeans, so today I’m sharing five easy, modern ways to wear them this season. Personally, I much prefer washed black denim to jet black. Solid black jeans can feel a little stiff and formal and even a bit old-fashioned,while washed black has that softer, slightly lived-in look that feels more current.

What Is Washed Black Denim?
First off, let’s define our terms! Washed black denim is black denim that’s been softened and faded just enough to give it a slightly worn-in, charcoal look—as opposed to traditional jet-black denim, which is solid, saturated, and tends to read more dressy and formal.

Washed black feels more modern and relaxed, and the subtle variation in the wash adds dimension that makes it easier to dress up or down. In fact, I find washed black far more versatile than true black jeans, and I love how it adds contrast and texture without overpowering an outfit.
Outfit Inspiration with Washed Black Jeans
Here are five outfits I’ve worn with straight, wide-leg, and flare silhouettes, so you can see a few different styling options depending on what you like to wear and how you like things to fit.
1. Washed Black + Soft Neutrals (Ivory, Oatmeal, Grey, Camel)

Soft neutrals brighten washed black and make the whole outfit feel modern and polished without going high-contrast. Think ivory sweaters, camel or khaki coats, stripe tees, and white sneakers—these shades keep washed black looking fresh and elevated.
This first outfit is one I wore in Chicago a couple of years back, and it’s a perfect example of how washed black is a softer alternative to stark black jeans. The white sweater lightens the whole look, while the plaid scarf ties everything together without feeling harsh. White sneakers with black accents keep it crisp and casual.

And in this next outfit, the black-and-white striped sweater pulls in the black denim, while the khaki trench adds a touch of warmth but still stays firmly in the neutral family. It’s a great example of how washed black denim works beautifully with lighter layers and classic tones.

A grey sweater is another great neutral to pair with washed black because it adds just a touch of contrast without feeling stark. The soft, cool tone works beautifully with the charcoal wash and keeps the outfit feeling relaxed and modern. This is one of those simple color pairings I reach for when I want something easy but still pulled together.

2. Washed Black + Rich, Moody Colors (Rust, Oxblood, Raisin & Burgundy)
Washed black denim pairs beautifully with richer shades like rust, burgundy, oxblood, and raisin. These deeper tones complement the charcoal wash without overwhelming it, and they add warmth and dimension to your outfit. Whether it’s a rust scarf, a raisin utility jacket, or an oxblood leather jacket, these moody hues give washed black a chic, elevated feel.

This luxe cardigan in a deep shade of rust has black buttons, which inspired me to pair it with washed black jeans. Black suede boots ground the look and add another luxe element, keeping the outfit polished and sleek.

This outfit is older, but I still love the combination of washed black jeans, an oatmeal sweater, and a rich rust scarf. The rust adds that pop of warmth, while the black leather jacket and boots tie everything together and keep it looking modern.
If I were recreating this look today, I’d swap the skinny jeans for a full-length straight or wide-leg style to give it a more current feel.

In the next two looks, I started with an all-black base and layered on muted shades for low-level contrast that’s more interesting than wearing all black. These soft, moody colors blend beautifully with washed black while still adding depth.

3. Washed Black + Tonal Black (Black-on-Black Layers)
Pairing washed black denim with black tops or jackets creates a sleek, tonal look that’s polished but not severe. It’s one of my favorite ways to make all-black outfits feel current.

This first look is one I’ve shown a ton this fall, but it’s probably the best example of this formula. I paired washed black relaxed flares with a fine-gauge black sweater, then added a black leather jacket, black leather belt, and black leather boots. A bold gold link bracelet and hoop earrings (plus the gold hardware on the belt) brighten the look and give it a modern edge. I could have added a necklace too, but it really didn’t need it.

FRAME Lax (30) (budget option) // crew neck sweater (M) // similar boots (8) // Michael Kors leather jacket (S) // FRAME belt (M) (option) // link bracelet // hoops
And here’s a simple travel look that shows how this formula can go from edgy to casual with just a few tweaks. A black cashmere v-neck cardigan paired with slim straight ankle jeans is simple, but the proportions just work. The double-strap black Mary Janes keep it modern and a little whimsical. I topped it off with an olive trench for a touch of contrast without breaking the tonal vibe.

Then this outfit shows how adding a print, like this plaid jacket in the same black and charcoal tones, can really elevate the look. The pattern adds interest without competing with the washed black denim, and the subtle leather collar detail ties in beautifully with the black boots and bag. It’s a great way to keep an all-neutral outfit feeling intentional and stylish.

And if you’ve had your eye on these jeans, here’s a heads-up: the FRAME Le Slim Palazzo in Destroyer is 40% off right now and still fully stocked!

4. Washed Black + Cool Blues (Navy, Slate, Indigo)
Navy and washed black are such an underrated pairing. The muted blue tones play really well with the charcoal undertones in the denim, giving the whole outfit a subtle, sophisticated vibe without feeling matchy-matchy.

In this look, the bright navy ribbed mock-neck top has a bit of texture and even some black threads woven through, which blends seamlessly with the washed black jeans. I kept the rest of the outfit simple and tonal—black suede booties, a black leather jacket, and gold-tone hardware on the belt and earrings to warm things up just a touch.

5. Washed Black + Earthy Outerwear (Olive, Khaki, Brown)
Washed black is a true neutral, so it mixes effortlessly with other neutrals—especially earthy shades like olive, tan, and warm khaki. The softer charcoal wash keeps these combinations looking relaxed and modern, and they’re some of the easiest outfits to throw together for everyday wear or travel. Whether it’s an olive hoodie, a khaki trench, or a warm brown layer, these muted tones pair beautifully with washed black without adding harsh contrast.

I wore my MOTHER Dazzler washed black jeans all over Scotland and London in September, and again in London and the Cotswolds last May. In this first look, I styled them with a longline London Fog trench in a classic khaki. The contrasting black buttons and plaid lining tie in the jeans nicely, and this coat-and-denim combo worked with every top and shoe I packed. Here, I’m wearing a green top and black ballet flats since we were headed to dinner.

And here’s that look from the Cotswolds last May, with the same jeans and my cropped trench in a similar khaki shade. The ivory-and-black stripe cashmere sweater tee brightens things up, while the khaki trench brings in those earthy tones that pair so naturally with washed black denim.
This look shows how easily washed black can anchor both lighter neutrals (as referenced in #1: Washed Black + Soft Neutrals) and warmer outerwear, making it one of the most versatile washes you can travel with.

I hope this post gives you some inspiration for wearing washed black jeans and shows how many different ways you can style them. This wash is surprisingly versatile—it also works beautifully with more saturated colors (like red or hot pink) as well as soft pastels and lighter spring tones, even though I don’t have examples of those to share here.
If you’re still looking for your perfect pair, I rounded up a variety of washed black denim options below at different price points, so you can find a pair that fits your style and your budget. If you’ve tried a color pairing you love, I’d also love to hear about it!

Thanks for putting together this great post! I have a couple of pairs of washed black jeans, but haven’t worn them much. Now that I’ve seen all your great combinations, I’m going to start wearing mine more.
When I was going through my fall/winter clothing last month, I kept a pair of gray Paige jeans that I had from two years ago. I wanted to buy a pair of washed black jeans, but I told myself the gray would be fine. I haven’t worn the gray jeans once. I’ve put them on, then taken them off. They looked dated to me, and when I think back, I didn’t wear them often last year. I think the Mother Hustler Roller is going on my Christmas wish list. To buy for myself!
Colleen…. I finally got rid of my grey jeans too. Never wore them. I’d put them on and just couldn’t find the right outfit combo, so took off.
Thank you for this post. I believe I was the one that requested it. Very helpful. My new Quince faded jeans just came in the mail so hope they fit and I can try out some of these combos. Otherwise I’ll check out your denim list.
I’m having a hard time reading your post as so many ads popping up and causing the screen to scroll as I’m reading. Takes forever to read a post lately. Anyone else????
Can you screen recorded what that looks like? My developer is asking. He has not seen the issue on his end, but I want it fixed. You are not the first person to mention it.
Interesting. Do you think it has to do with the device we are reading on? I read on an iPhone 12 Pro Max and never have a problem and there is never a problem on my laptop either. Yes, there are small pop-up ads but they are easily “x’ed” out.
Yes, I am also having this issue!
great ideas, thank you so much! Does Quince still carry your stripe cashmere tee? I only saw solid colors. Thanks!
Love all the jean outfits 😍
What a great post! I love washed black jeans as opposed to dark black. The pics of you in the deep rust sweater are amazing. You look beautiful in that color!
Great info! I live in Washington state and it’s to cold to wear shoes wo Sox in the fall and winter. So there goes the flats etc. Do you have any suggestions? Besides ofcourse wearing boots.
I wear my sneakers with socks, or I’d pretty much live in boots when it’s really cold and messy out.
Now I see how versatile my washed black jeans are, so I am going to start wearing them more. Thank you!
Fantastic posts. Thank you. Please do more of these types of posts too.
I also prefer charcoal jeans instead of black–black does just look alittle dated/matronly to me. I like this post, but I found myself loving some of your pieces that are not available any longer–and your substitutions just didn’t do it for me. I liked your leather jacket with the details and that green hoodie with black ties–very cute! I recognized the Chicago skyline before even reading the notes(:
I have a question on the Quince “birks” to those that might have bought them or know–I’m 6.5, I assume I should go with a 6? Do they seem not as wide and more slender then Birks, hopefully? And last–to those who have bought from Quince–have you ever returned anything–and how did that go? Did you have to pay postage to mail back? Do you take it to a UPS store for returning?
Thanks in advance (:
I love my Birks! I bought a pair of the Quince last year and I’ll give you my 2 cents. I buy the Birks in the medium to narrow range. So the Quince pair were much wider for me. Also, I prefer the original harder footbed on my Birks. The Quince pair were very comfortable but I found that they didn’t provide the support I wanted during a full day of wearing. Hope that helps!
Oh–and what color did you choose?
