Midi Dress Outfit Ideas: 3 Ways to Style This Spring Staple

With spring comes a season full of events—weddings, brunches, showers, and more—which means many of us are looking for the perfect dress. Midi dresses are a great option because they’re easy to dress up or down. I personally prefer styles with clean lines and a minimal feel—the kind you can style multiple ways without them feeling too fussy.

One of the biggest questions I get when it comes to dresses is: What do you wear over a sleeveless dress? The right layer can completely change the look, whether you want something polished, relaxed, or a little edgy. Today, I’m styling two sleeveless midi dresses with three different topper options to show just how easy it is to switch up the vibe.

Look 1: The Travel Wrap – Effortless & Elegant

I purchased this zestt organics travel scarf for my trip to Italy a couple of summers back, and now I rarely travel without it. Not only is it perfect for cozying up on the plane, but it also makes a chic and practical topper for dresses… at home or abroad. And it’s not just for dresses! I’ve thrown this wrap over a tee and jeans, leggings, even joggers—it truly works with anything.

The soft drape adds an elegant touch, and you can wear it a few different ways—draped over the shoulders, wrapped around like a shawl, or even looped as a scarf. It’s one of those pieces that instantly elevates a simple dress, and it’s surprisingly warm without feeling bulky. If you’re someone who gets chilly in air-conditioned restaurants or wants a versatile layer for travel, a wrap like this is a great wardrobe addition!

Let’s also take a moment to talk about this dress. I love the sparse floral design, with champagne-colored flowers set against a deep blue backdrop for a contemporary, elevated feel. The fabric is a lightweight, low-stretch charmeuse, cut on the bias for a touch of natural stretch and a beautifully flowy silhouette.

It has a deep V-neck in both the front and back, along with bra-friendly wide straps, which is always a plus! The way it skims the body is so feminine and flattering, making it a perfect choice for spring weddings, baby showers, or even Easter Sunday. I kept the styling elegant and understated with gold block-heel sandals and a smaller ivory shoulder bag in the trendy east-west silhouette, to allow the dress to take center stage.

Look 2: The Chartreuse Sweater – Casual & Playful

Throwing a sweater over the shoulders is such an easy way to top off a midi dress, and I love the preppy-meets-sporty vibe it creates. Styled over the black-and-white polka dot dress, this chartreuse sweater is a fresh and modern way to introduce some brightness to a neutral outfit without overpowering it.

The beauty of this styling trick is its versatility—you can wear the sweater loosely draped, tie it in the front for a more structured look, or even layer it on fully when the temps cool down. To keep the outfit feeling casual and modern, I paired it with white leather sneakers, which add a sporty-chic touch while keeping things comfortable and wearable for everyday outings.

This polka dot slip maxi dress is all about playful elegance, with adjustable spaghetti straps and a scoop neck for a perfect fit. Fully lined and made from soft crepe fabric, it’s the go-to piece for easy, chic styling.

Look 3: The Black Twill Jacket – Edgy & Cool

For a more structured, edgy vibe, I layered this black twill jacket over the polka dot midi dress—and I love how it instantly changes the feel of the outfit. The tailored fit and sharp lines contrast with the softness of the dress, creating a look that’s both polished and modern.

To lighten up the look, I pushed up the sleeves and swapped the sneakers for metallic leather thong sandals, which add just the right touch of shine. I feel like the combination of the flowy dress, sleek jacket, and minimalist sandals strikes a nice balance of chic without trying too hard.

This is a great example of how the right topper can completely transform a sleeveless midi dress. Whether you’re going for classic and feminine or edgy and cool, a simple layering piece can make all the difference.

I might also wear the travel wrap with this dress for a slightly dressier vibe. I’m not sure why we didn’t snap a photo that way, but in that case, I’d swap the flat sandals for these strappy black kitten heel sandals to elevate the look just a bit more.

Which of these looks is your favorite? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Might I also suggest a fisherman sandal? I like this trend as a sandal but not heeled and there some cool styles out! Also, love a wrap!

  2. I love the first two looks, the floral dress is seriously one of the prettiest dresses you have featured. And the polka dot dress with the chartreuse sweater and sneakers is super cute. I don’t know but the black jacket one looks too “heavy” to me. I think a lighter color jacket, maybe white? Just my 2 cents. 🙂

    1. I like the black, but I think white would certainly work too. Also, I think it needed a black shoe to bookend the look… even the dressier Sam Edelman pair would look better to m e than the flip flops, I think. I see these things AFTER I photograph them… 🤪

      1. I like to have two different color options for dresses like this, it makes it easier to transition seasons. In this case the black jacket for fall/winter, then switch to a white or ivory in spring.

      2. Agree with Carolyn btw, that navy floral is a gorgeous dress! My favorite pic of the bunch is actually the one of it with no topper. But fully understand some ladies prefer to wear one. And it always helps to get more wear out of it in transitional seasons. But it really stands out nicely on its own. I’m sure you’ll get lots out wear out if it!

      3. Agreed, the black jacket with a black shoe, much better. White jacket with the shoes you had on. I like Megan’s idea – black for fall/winter; white for spring/summer.

  3. i love these two midi dresses & how you styled them with different toppers. I didn’t see the link to the black twill jacket. I would love to find a cute midi dress in petite sizing & also a lightweight black jacket. You look amazing in these two dresses!

  4. I love the idea of an edgy jacket over a pretty floral dress, and I would certainly add a denim jacket in a light wash or white/ecru. Maybe that has been over-done over the years, but it is still my favorite look. I also have a lovely lightweight cashmere wrap that I like to travel with and wrap myself up on a cool evening. I would love to see your chartreuse sweater worn over the dress, not just over the shoulders. Such a pretty color.

    1. Yeah, I’m kind of over the denim jacket over a dress for now… unless it’s a different style from the trucker we all wore over our dresses for so long. That said, I saw plenty of women in Florida wearing that and thought they looked cute. If it’s a look you like, I would not hesitate to keep wearing it (not that you asked permission, lol! But for anyone reading along…) As far as the cardigan, it’s too small. I couldn’t get the medium in time, so I just threw it over my shoulders.

  5. Reviews on the Good American jeans state they are more of an ivory or cream color. Not white like the picture. Do you have these? If so, do you agree? I like these but would prefer white. Thanks!

  6. I really like this kind of post- helps me start thinking of both new things and ways to use what I already have. Thank you!

  7. I hope that both of your girls made it back to their respective colleges without any issues. Great options! Since I find my denim jackets to seem off with some of my dresses, I think the travel wrap would be perfect. I’m wondering if it stays in place without you having to keep adjusting it.

  8. Hi, I love these looks! Would you wear the Rails dress to a Saturday evening wedding in a hotel? I fear it might be too casual. The dress code is “formal”. Thank you.

    1. Not if the dress code is formal, no. I would wear it to an afternoon wedding, if there was no formality indicated. An evening wedding with formal dress code indicates a full length gown. Hope that helps! 🙂

  9. Hi Jo-Lynne!
Thank you for this great post. I was wondering, what kind of bra you wore under the polka dot dress?
    Thanks!
