What I Wore Lately: Transition Style

Hi, friends! It’s time for another What I Wore Lately—a look at my everyday outfits from the past few weeks. I hope this gives you some fresh ideas for mixing and matching your own wardrobe, though I’ll admit my looks have been feeling a bit repetitive since I got back from Florida.

It’s that awkward in-between time of year when I’ve cleared out a lot of my winter clothes, but it’s still not quite warm enough for spring ones, so I find myself reaching for my old favorites. But that’s okay—this is real life over here, and we all get into a bit of a style rut from time to time! Things will get more interesting once the weather warms up a bit more. For better or worse, here’s what I’ve been wearing lately…

Also, a lot of my favorite denim is 25% off during the Saks Friends & Family Sale! I’ll call out the best deals throughout the post.

Everyday Looks for Real Life

It’s hard to believe how far back these pictures go. I always have to look back through my calendar to remember where I went when I write these posts, but this time, some of these outfits even predate my trip to Florida! That feels like forever ago at this point.

This first look is from my weekly women’s Bible study almost a month ago. I was getting a little tired of rotating between the same two or three pairs of jeans, so I pulled out these PAIGE Leenah ankle flares and built my outfit around them. I leaned into lighter neutrals as a subtle nod to spring, even though the weather that day still felt very much like winter.

These booties are an older pair from Aquatalia—they’re waterproof, which made them perfect for the messy weather we were having. To keep the look cohesive, I threw on my Aritzia puffer in the taupe for an extra layer of warmth.

The next day, I had Pilates followed by a medical appointment, so I needed an outfit that worked for both. I figured my Pranayama Wrap would be a step up from my usual hoodie—and by the way, it’s currently 30% off! It comes in a bunch of colors, and it’s my favorite for travel and lounging.

It was freezing that day, so I pulled out my “sleeping bag coat” — that’s what I call it, anyway! This Aritzia Puffer is like wearing a big bear hug, and I’m so glad I splurged. I know I’ll have it for many years.

I had a nail appointment the next day, but otherwise, I was just working from home, so I went with this comfy, easy outfit. By the way, and these jeans are part of the Saks sale! They’re such a good, classic pair of mid-wash flares.

And the next day, I was off to Florida! This was my travel look, and I layered a short trench on top. It kept me warm enough for Philly and didn’t feel too out of place when I got to Florida.

After the trip, it was back to everyday life. For my first full day home, I kept it casual with my new Sarasota sweatshirt, blue jeans, and silver sneakers.

I re-wore this comfy look the next day for a hair appointment, but this time, I swapped the brown sneakers for a cream and coral pair. The lighter colors made it feel a little more like spring.

We met friends for dinner that night, and it was still cold enough for a puffer coat, evidently. I intentionally went with the taupe one to coordinate with my outfit.

The next day, I had a nail appointment, and we ordered pizza for dinner, so I kept it casual with another similar look. This time, I added a bit of color with my new Frank & Eileen henley.

After I got back from Florida, I cleared out my heaviest and darkest winter clothes, along with anything I hadn’t been wearing. It feels good to have more space in my closet! Since then, I’ve really been leaning into my favorite sweaters, jeans, and sneaker outfits. We’ve had a few nice days, but it’s still too cold for spring clothes—and to be honest, I’m not feeling especially inspired right now. So yeah, it was the MOTHER Weekenders again!

I had Pilates the next day, and then it just so happened that my assistant, Amy, was in the area. We made last-minute plans to grab breakfast, but I didn’t have time to go home and change—so workout clothes it was. Not exactly what I would’ve chosen for our first meeting, but hey, sometimes you just have to roll with it!

For church that Sunday, I went with shades of grey and pink. When I splurged on this sweater last fall, I knew I’d appreciate it even more this time of year. It’s super cozy and warm, but the soft rose color and v-neck cardigan design give it a subtle nod to spring. Also, it’s fully stocked and on sale at Vince.com! I went with my light grey Aquatalia boots to keep the color palette soft and cohesive.

Last Tuesday, I had a brand collab to film, so I pulled myself together. This is the same shirt as the pink one above, and I love how the crisp white pairs with blue jeans. I added the green sneakers for a fun contrast.

Also, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly alternative to the Frank & Eileen Patrick Popover Henley, Evereve has the Romy Relaxed Polo Top in both black and white.

After a round of try-ons one day last week, I threw on my comfy Sarasota sweatshirt and blue jeans and wore them for the rest of the day.

The next day, I changed into this stripe sweater and darker wash jeans after a photo shoot with Alison. (If you’re local, she’s now scheduling her summer Beach Sessions! If you didn’t know, she also does family photography, and her work is amazing. I highly recommend reaching out if you’re in the area.)

I’ve been waiting for the weather to warm up so I could start wearing this striped hooded cardigan, and it’s finally the perfect time for it! I love how the navy and ivory stripes pair with dark wash denim—it makes the whole look feel a little more polished. (FYI, J.Crew has a similar pair at a much lower price.)

Also, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly alternative to the Gucci loafer mule, Quince has a really good option—and they even have it in taupe, a shade Gucci discontinued.

Last Friday, the girls and I drove down to visit Paul’s mom, and I pulled out this half zip with the fun striped placket and paired it with my old faithful MOTHER Weekender jeans. This top is on sale, by the way!

This is how uninspired I am with my closet right now… I reached for the same jeans as the day before and threw on another pullover and sneakers. And yes, I finally caved and grabbed the Jenni Kayne Flynn in another color when it was on sale over Presidents’ Day Weekend. I just love the easy fit, the flattering v-neck, and the incredible quality. It feels amazing on, and the black is a classic I know I’ll wear a ton.

For church on Sunday, I reached for an old favorite—the Rails Geneva Cardigan in classic camel and black stripes. It occurred to me that this could be a great piece for my London travel capsule if we have a chilly spring. (FYI, this sweater is currently an amazing deal—65% off at Revolve! It’s been a favorite of mine for two years running, so if you’ve had your eye on it, now’s the perfect time to take the plunge!)

I also took the opportunity to try out my new Sézane trench—another contender for my London packing list. I love the oversized, relaxed look, and it’s so comfortable. But I’m wondering if it might be a bit much for London in May. What do you think?

Finally, yesterday I did a bunch of try-ons and ended up wearing this outfit for a while. I got chilly and changed back into one of my Jenni Kayne sweaters, but at least I felt festive for St. Paddy’s Day—if only for a little while… haha!

Side note: These Vionic ballet flats are so comfortable, and I really like the styling with the slightly squared-off toe. I was worried they might feel a little frumpy, but I don’t think they do—as long as they’re styled in a modern way. They’re a great compromise for a comfort shoe; in fact, I’m also considering bringing these to London with me.

And that’s a wrap! As you can see, I’m in that in-between phase where I’m reaching for my tried-and-true favorites while waiting for the weather to warm up. As we inch closer to spring, I’ll have some fresher outfit ideas to share.

Are you feeling stuck in a style rut too, or have you been able to start wearing spring clothes?

  1. I love the Sezane trench you choose. England in May is usually in the mid 60’s. Your trench is a great choice, but if you don’t already follow @backofthewardrobe70 on IG (she lives outside of London), she might be a good resource. Like you, she loves jeans and sweaters.

  2. On the website, the Vionic camel ballet flat looks very yellow/gold. In your picture, it does not. Do you feel like it is a true camel?

    1. Hm, they are definitely warmer than taupe, but I think they match my skin tone well with a tan. That’s one reason I like them so much, they’re a little darker than what we typically call “nude” — and yes, I am aware of the baggage that term carries. But we all have a color in mind when we hear that word in reference to shoes. As for these Vionics, I think they’re a pretty neutral shade of camel — not too warm, not too cool.

  3. I tried the Brooklyn Mid Rise Ankle Pant but the stripe of stretchy material down the side of each thigh definitely puts it in the sporty athletic wear category. Their high rise pant is non wrinkle, thin, great for travel and humid weather. Best of all can be dressed up or down. Looks like an upscale dress slack.

  4. Hi! Do you know what size you have in the Rails Geneva sweater? Could not find the size. Very cute and a great markdown!
Also nice to see your picture in the silver sneakers. I bought some too and have worn a few times but still getting used to them. Thanks!🤗

  5. Great looks!

The Rails Geneva cardigan is so cute. It says to dry clean. Can you wash it on gentle/delicate?

  6. I love that you are so real in your every day life and clothing choices! Love the suggestions! Thank you for your humor, insights and recommendations.

  7. Another good London follow is Caroline @fabfatand40plus. She has great style. I took some cues from her for my London trip this past November!

  8. I’m tempted to order the Frank & Eileen popover in the bluebird or mineral. I’m desperate for some color in my wardrobe, and this checks my “only buy” v-neck and slightly cropped tops. I have to admit this price for a cotton top gives me pause. Of course, then I do the price per wear, knowing I’m wearing out a similar BR top, and I’ve almost convinced myself to order it! On another subject, I want to thank you, Jo-Lynne, for being brave enough to admit so publicly that with the changes in your body as you age, going up a size is sometimes necessary. I struggled when this was happening to me, and I think women need to talk more about it.

      1. Yes it’s hard. My body is just now changing at age 63 and it’s causing my current size to be too tight
but sizing up doesn’t fit right either. I hate inbetween. You seem to just go up a size and works for you. I’m in clothes rut too. Ready for warmer Spring. I’m still looking for a light color trench, longer style like your last year light, single breast one. This years are all to dark and warm color for my grey hair. If yours is a size small and you ever think of selling it, let me know.,

  9. I purchased the Adidas Spezial in the coral color and when they came I was surprised to see that the upper has light colored velvet on it. I love them but I’ve been nervous to wear them due to that feature. How are they holding up for you? Does the velvet attract dirt or dust more than other materials?

  10. Thank you for the heads up on the Athleta 30% off sale. I’ve been eyeing the Pranayama Wrap in smoky rose for a long time. I bought it today and it was a great deal! I’m sure I’ll get a lot of use out of it 🙂

  11. We were in London in April a few years ago and I wore the Eddie Bauer waterproof trench coat. Lighter weight than a regular trench coat and easy to roll up and pack. Comes in lots of colors too!

  12. Awesome post! I really look forward to these. I’ve been eyeing the Evereve Jane pullover! So cute and I need some color as well. I typically only like v neck, but occasionally I’ll find a crew that doesn’t feel like it choking me. lol. The JCrew factory option for the Henley is in my cart! Cute!!
I too have to watch my waistline…being 62, it’s not easy to do. That said, High Noons are my go to for sugar reduction and a tasty adult beverage. I’m gluten free so I have to watch that as well. Sugar and carbs are a killer after menopause for me. Thanks for being authentic. I appreciate that about you.

  13. Perfect timing on the Athleta sale picks (I was just about to check-out my cart!) If I needed a raincoat, that Altheta one would be my choice. I tried it on in the store a while back and it is really nice. The last short sleeve Evereve sweater tee you wore above looks fresh and springy (white w/ green stripes). I bet it would be cute with black jeans too. I like your Sezanne trench, but if you’re bringing a black raincoat to England, will you need another of that type coat? IDK – might be fun to have the tan and black?

    1. I’d like to have both. I figure, I may be wearing a coat more often than not. I think having two options would be good… but if I’m going to fit everything into a carry-on, the trench may have to go.

  14. The in between seasons time frame can definitely be challenging when it comes to what to wear. While our mornings can be rather chilly, the temperatures warm up pretty quickly. Since I have removed my cold season clothes from my closet, I am wearing my spring clothes. Fortunately, I have access to some jackets. It’s nice to know that just like us, you have some tried and true pieces that you fall back on.

  15. The in between seasons time can be very challenging when it comes to deciding what to wear. But you seemed to have nailed it! While our mornings can still be very chilly, the days are warming up, so a jacket really isn’t needed by lunchtime. Since I have removed all of my cold months clothes from my closet, I am wearing spring clothes. But, I have very few pieces in my closet at the moment, so my choices are slim. Having so much empty space is so nice, so I hope to only put what I love in it.

  16. We’ve been having spring weather and some afternoons feel like summer high 80s. I’m wearing spring clothes except for sandals. I don’t polish my toe nails in winter to let them be free of chemicals so have to wait for my next pedicure. I think you look firm and in good shape. Like most women, my body began to change after menopause. The most changes came after 65. Even though I’m still a size 4 it’s not the same body I used to have no matter how much I work out or watch what I eat and drink. Getting old is not for wimps.

  17. Spring has definitely arrived in Texas and I need to clean out my closet and get organized for the new season!! Love your ‘real life’ looks!! We all get into fashion ruts, me maybe more than others!!🤪 I hope you find the Endless and the Brooklyn pants fit! I have both and love them for travel and casual days when I’m tired of jeans!!😂

  18. I would love to know where you purchased the Sarasota sweatshirt – it looked very comfy and a nice look.
