Monochromatic Black Outfit for Spring

Happy St. Paddy’s Day! I guess I should have held the outfit with the olive green dolman top to share today. It’s about the only green item in my closet. Instead, I’m sharing an easy monochromatic black outfit for spring with a sweater tee and kick flares.

I actually had a whole other post written for today, and the hero piece just sold out, so I’m going to have to drop back and punt. (One of my mother’s favorite phrases, lol!) This is another look we shot on the same day.

A monochromatic outfit is a great way to look polished and elevated with minimal effort, and all-black is my go-to. I actually wore an outfit very similar to this for Thanksgiving — the same sweater, but with black skinny jeans (currently 25% off) and my pointed toe studded flats.

Monochromatic Black Outfit -- perfect for transition season

This is the Everlane alpaca sweater tee in a size small. The cozy texture and luxe, airy feel makes this sweater perfect for transition season.

It has short sleeves with just a bit of volume, which is very on trend right now, and a versatile 23″ length. Sometimes I give it a front tuck (as shown above) but it’s short enough that I usually just leave it out.

For today’s look, I lightened it up a bit for spring with black kick flares and minimalist slide sandals. I love the contrast of the heathered black knit with the jet black jeans.

Style Tip: Mixing textures adds interest and dimension to a monochromatic outfit.

You may remember these Mother Insider crop jeans from this desk to dinner look that I shared last week.

They’re made of a lightweight stretch denim, which is perfect for spring and summer; and they have a 26″ inseam with a 10″ front rise in the size 28. (I just measured mine to confirm, because every website that sells these jeans has different measurements.)

I like how they have a snug fit through the thighs and a slight flare from knee to hem.

Straighter, more relaxed styles are very much on trend right now, but these still look current, and this style is far more flattering on my hourglass body type.

As far as I know, Shopbop is the only retailer that carries this exact pair of Mother Insiders in the Not Guilty wash with the finished hem. They haven’t been on sale in quite some time, but I expect the big spring Shopbop Spend More, Save More event to start any day now.

In the meantime, there’s a pair of black Mother Insiders with a frayed step hem currently on sale at Nordstrom, Neimans, and Saks. I also rounded up some other black crop jeans at various price points below:

I like these jeans best with a slight heel, or at the very least, a shoe with a low vamp.

And before you ask… The vamp refers to where the shoe ends on the top of your foot. A low vamp ends closer to your toes, and a high vamp covers more of the top of your foot.

In the case of these sandals, the low vamp and minimalist styling exposes more of the foot, which visually elongates the leg, and makes me look taller and slimmer — especially helpful when wearing dark cropped jeans.

I accessorized this monochromatic black outfit with big gold geometric drop earrings from Kendra Scott. I’ve had these for a while, and I didn’t realize they were sold out, but the Kendra Scott Simon drop earrings would work just as well.

I also wore a simple gold snake wrap bracelet from Evereve, but I wish I’d thought to add a Victoria Emerson boho cuff or something with more pattern and texture, as I did with the Thanksgiving outfit pictured above.

Since the outfit is so simple, accessories are key to adding visual interest, and I think it could use a little extra something.

My choice of handbag was another missed opportunity to take this look up a notch. I love this leather hobo for everyday, but my leopard clutch or this metallic ruched clutch that I just added to my bag collection would be more fun and interesting for an event or date night.

I kind of wish I could go back and shoot it all again… but here I am, at the end of this post! It’s the second full post I’ve written for today, so it’s going live, come he!! or high water.

Despite the missed opportunities to add a few more points of interest to this look, I can see myself wearing this out to dinner with friends or family, or throwing it on for an event this spring.

Be sure to visit Cyndi Spivey and see the spring look she’s styling today!

Save It For Later:

P.S. The black Mother Insiders in this monochromatic look are the same style as the distressed pair I styled on Monday with the black utility shirt jacket… And guess what!?! Those just went on sale!

They’re part of the Saks Friends & Family Sale, and Nordstrom is price-matching. See more of this look here.

  1. Everything about this out fit is adorable on you. I love the look and can definitely see the animal print bag or the metallic one you mentioned taking it up a notch for date night. Thank you soooo much for explaining VAMP – I always wondered but felt duh for asking.

  2. What about all the cactus green in yiur closet??? Haha! I’m at a doctors appt with my son and am wearing all gray! I’ll change into something festIve for lunch with a frIend!

  3. I agree that your all-black outfit needs a punch of something…color? jewelry? !! I will certainly wear my green Aran Irish sweater today. I’ll post a photo on your Insiders page!! By the way, I’m not Irish, but love to honor that beautiful country today!

  4. I have a comment about what you had planned for today. While I do, at times, order something you are showing I don’t mind when something isn’t available. Being able to buy isn’t the only reason to look at fashion bloggers. I e joy seeing what you put together, how you put it together etc. I get inspiration from your posts.

  5. Love the Everlane short-sleeve sweater, I have it in 2 colors. Great to wear in the winter with a button-down (I ususally wear silk) underneath for the office. That is why I bought them initially, but now I am discovering that they are great as is! I love the monochromatic look, too in this post! Thank you!
