Spring Try-On Haul: Shorts, Tops, & Denim

Good morning! Well, it’s been quite a week, hasn’t it? I’m sure we’re all feeling a bit weary today. I hope this little try-on haul gives you a diversion from the constant news cycle.

I didn’t get as far as I wanted with the pictures I’ve taken lately. I have many more, but in the interest of time, I had to pick just one or two of each piece. I decided to focus on the shorts I’ve been testing out, as well as a few new tops and jeans that have come in recently. I’m holding a bunch of travel dresses and comfort sandals for next week.

Spring Try-On Haul: Shorts, Tops, & Denim

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and I usually wear a small in tops and dresses, a 29 in jeans, and a size 8 shoe. Gifted items are indicated by c/o; everything else I purchased myself.

SUNDRY Side Twist Tee

at Evereve (1) // shorts (29)

You’ve seen this before; I had the size 2 (which is a medium in SUNDRY) and it was too big, so I ordered the 1 when it was on sale a few weeks ago. I definitely prefer the fit of this one. It’s spendy for a tee, but the fabric is incredibly soft and lightweight and comfortable against the skin.

In addition to the side tie hem, it has so many pretty seaming details in the design of the top and the way the sleeves are cut. It’s pretty much the perfect “beyond basic” t-shirt, in my opinion! It’s also made in the USA, as are all SUNDRY products.

VERDICT: Keeping, for sure! I brought this with me to Florida a few weeks ago, but I didn’t get around to wearing it because it was so chilly while we were there. I have a feeling this will be on serious repeat once our weather warms up. I love how this muted olive green pairs with white and ecru denim, especially.

AGOLDE Parker Long Relaxed Organic Cotton Denim Shorts in Occurrence

at Nordstrom (28) //  at Evereve (28)

I found these AGOLDE shorts at Evereve, but Nordstrom also carries them. I typically wear a 28 in AGOLDE shorts, so that’s what I ordered, but these are too snug. I took more angles of them, but suffice it to say, they’re going back. I re-ordered the 29 to try because I like the wash and the style.

They have a 4 1/2″ inseam, 24″ leg opening, 11 1/4″ front rise, with a button fly; and they’re made of 100% organic cotton.

KUT from the Kloth Jane Porkchop Shorts in Calibrate

at Evereve // at Nordstrom // hoodie (1) // sandals (8.5)

I ordered these shorts in both the 6 (above) and the 8 (below) to try, and I actually ended up keeping the 6. That’s my usual size in KUT from the Kloth, and I don’t like it when the leg opening of shorts is too big on my spindly legs, so I try to size down when I can do so comfortably.

These have a little more stretch to them than the AGOLDE pair, and I really like the pork chop style patch pockets. (I had to google that! It’s generally this style of front patch pocket.)

The measurements on these are 3 1/2″ inseam, 24 1/2″ leg opening, 10 1/2″ front rise; and they’re 99% cotton, 1% spandex. This inseam is as short as I’ll go these days, and I prefer 4 or 4 1/2″ but these are so cute and comfortable, I decided to keep them.

JEN7 Roll Cuff Denim Shorts in White

at Nordstrom // tee (S) // sandals (8.5)

These jean shorts are verrrry soft and stretchy, and I really like how they fit closer to the thighs than some. They’re also fairly thick and not see-through, and they have some sort of magical pocket engineering that’s meant to slim and sculpt without restriction.

The measurements are 4 1/2″ inseam (double-cuffed, although you can un-cuff them, if you prefer), 22″ leg opening, 10 1/4″ front rise; and the fabric is 99% cotton, 1% spandex. This is another instance where I ordered both the 6 (below) and the 8 (above) and kept the 6.

I really like this 4 1/2″ inseam; I feel like it’s enough coverage to feel “modest” without entering the frumpy territory, although my teenage daughter would beg to differ. She also had very strong opinions about these sandals, but that’s fodder for another post…

Here’s another set of pictures I took a few weeks ago that I forgot I had, where I styled them with the WHBM Power Tee and Tory Burch espadrille slides.

VERDICT: I kept the shorts in the size 6, but I’m undecided on the LOFT muscle tee. See more on that below…

LOFT Pleated Muscle Tee

at LOFT (XS) // AG shorts (29) // sandals (8)

I had this tee in black last year, and I loved it, but it was a little too big after my surgery, so I passed it on at the end of the season. Lo and behold, it’s back this year, so I decided to try the XS. I ordered the black in the S (you can see that above) and this Coastal Grey in the XS, so I could compare.

By the way, this tee is on sale for like $20. It’s another good “beyond basic” t-shirt that you can dress up or down, and they brought it out in a bunch of new colors this year.

It’s soft and lightweight and comfortable, but the sizing is a bit odd. I like how the XS fits in the chest, but it’s almost too tight around the hem, but I will front tuck it anyway, so maybe that doesn’t matter. I need to play with it more, and take some pictures from different angles.

AG Caden Shorts

at Bloomingdale’s (29) // LOFT muscle tee (XS) // sandals (8)

I ordered these when I saw them on sale a few weeks ago, and they took FOREVER to arrive. I actually forgot I’d ordered them! But they’re back on sale this weekend, so that’s good. They’re nice for when you want shorts that aren’t denim, but they’re pretty thin. That’s my only complaint, but I feel like all white shorts in this chino fabric are thin.

They also just fit in the waist, so definitely size up if in between. They have a 10.25″ rise and a 4″ inseam, according to the Bloomingdale’s website. I didn’t measure to confirm, but that seems about right.

KUT from the Kloth Jane Long Short with Cuff in Crisp White

at Evereve (6) // SUNDRY tee (1) // sandals (39)

I’m wearing these white shorts in the 6 above and the 8 below. They’re a lot like the JEN7 pair, as far as the measurements are concerned, and they feel soft and stretchy as well.

They’re good shorts, but the JEN7 feels a little more substantial, and I like the double cuff better than the single, I think. They have a 10 1/2″ rise and 4″ inseam, but I didn’t get a leg opening measurement.

I took a bunch of pictures of all three pairs of white shorts in this post from various angles, to better compare the fits, but I didn’t have time to edit them all and put them in a collage. I decided to keep the JEN7, and return the other two. (I have some white shorts from last year too.)

KUT from the Kloth Meg High Rise Fab Ab Wide Leg Jean in Ecru

at Evereve (6) // tee (1) // sandals (8)

These ecru jeans came in an Evereve order, and I kept forgetting to try them on. To be honest, I’m overwhelmed with all the wide leg jeans I’ve ordered! Trying to decide which ones to keep in my personal wardrobe is proving to be a bit of a challenge.

I like them, and I want a couple of options, but I will be wearing other styles as well, so I don’t want too many choices. That just makes getting dressed overwhelming, plus it’s wasteful.

So anyway! I like these, I have nothing bad to say about them, but I think I like some of the other pairs I’ve tried better.

Classic Fit Soft Gauze Shirt in Navy (40% off!)

at J.Crew (S) // jeans (6) // shorts (6)

I ordered this shirt to compare with the RAILS Ellis, and it’s really good! I mean, it is J.Crew, so definitely not a “budget buy” by any means, but it is considerably less than the RAILS version.

I always struggle with styling these button-ups though, especially the longer ones. I hate that “tail” you get in the back when you wear it front tucked, but the half tuck looks goofy to me, so I tried tying it with a pair of shorts. This is cute!

VERDICT: I kept the RAILS so I sent this back, but it’s a very good option, if you like the look. It comes in other colors, too, and it’s 40% off with code SPRING.

PAIGE Harper High Waist Ankle Wide Leg Jeans in Tonal Ecru Distressed

at Nordstrom (29) // 25 % off at Bloomingdale’s (29) // SUNDRY tee (1) // LOFT shell (S) // Gap Factory tee (S) // Steven slides (8) // platform heels (7.5) // Sam Edelman slides (8.5)

Yes, another pair of wide leg jeans, and this pair is ecru. I really like the moderate distressing on these, and the wide hem. They’re very, very soft, and also on the thicker side, so not see-through at all.

The measurements are 28″ inseam, 25″ leg opening, 12″ front rise; and the fabric is 98% cotton, 2% elastane. They look good with both flats and heels.

These are wider than most I’ve tried, which I thought I’d hate, but I actually kind of like them. They have a swingy, drapey thing going on that’s nice for summer.

I’m just struggling with what top to pair with them. They need something more fitted, I think. The SUNDRY side tie tee is okay, but I don’t love it with them, and this LOFT shell isn’t quite right, although the color palette is perfect!

I tried the linen dolman from Gap Factory, as well, and it has a better drape, but I still think I’d prefer something more fitted.

VERDICT: Undecided. I want to like these… but I need to figure out a few outfits with them, or they’re going back.

AG Saige High Rise Cropped Wide Leg Jeans in Modern White

25% off at Bloomingdale’s (29) // at Nordstrom (29) // LOFT shell (S) // platform heels (7.5)

These crisp white wide leg AG jeans also came in this week. They have more of a flared leg, with a raw hem, and I found them uncomfortably tight in the waist. This is my issue with most AG jeans these days. I do better with Paige and Mother.

The measurements are 27 1/2″ inseam, 23″ leg opening, 11″ front rise; and the fabric is 93% cotton, 6% polyester, 1% elastane. They have a thinner, more trousery feel to them.

I tried tucking this top in all the way around, but I’m not loving it. When I do that, it creates a horizontal line right across my middle, and because there’s a lot of fabric in this top, it looks poofy rather than sleek and streamlined.

VERDICT: Returning.

PAIGE Nellie Cropped Jeans in Crisp White

25% off at Bloomingdale’s (29) // at paige.com // at Anthropologie (29) // LOFT shell // Quince cashmere tee // J. Crew tee // platform heels // sandals

So then I grabbed the PAIGE Nellie to compare with the same top and shoes. I shared these in a previous Try-On Haul, and I’ve been holding onto them because I think they might be keepers. These are also on sale at Bloomingdale’s right now.

The measurements are 10 3/4″ rise, 26 1/2″ inseam, 19.5″ leg opening; and the fabric is 92% cotton, 6% elastomultiester, 2% elastane. Again, they have a thinner, more trousery feel, but I like the finished hem better than the AG pair. Here’s how I styled them when I shared them before…

This time I tried them with my Quince cashmere tee, for a more fitted top, and I kind of like this, but it still creates that unflattering horizontal line right across my middle. I feel like the green linen tee (above) front-tucked looks a little better because it doesn’t create such a straight line.

VERDICT: Still debating on these.

Wit & Wisdom ‘Ab’Solution High Waist Raw Hem Skinny Crop Jeans

at Nordstrom (6) // blouse (S) // sandals (8)

Okay, I’m really going to have to run through these last few items quickly. I have an appointment I need to get to! These jeans are very comfortable, and I like the wash, but the whiskering at the hip is a bit much. If that doesn’t bother you, these are a nice budget-friendly pair of slim straight leg ankle jeans.

The measurements are 26 1/2″ inseam, 13″ leg opening, 10″ front rise; and the fabric is 62% cotton, 25% polyester, 11% rayon, 2% spandex. They run TTS for Wit & Wisdom; size down if in between.

Wit & Wisdom Print Ruffle Sleeveless Blouse

at Nordstrom (S) // jeans (6) // sandals (8)

I think this print is so pretty, and the fabric is kind of shiny and dressy. It would be nice for work wear, church, date nights, etc. Keeping!

Wit & Wisdom Smocked Elbow Sleeve Blouse in Black/Multi

at Nordstrom (S) // jeans (6) // sandals (8)

I’m undecided on this one. It isn’t really me, but I do like the print. I think ladies who like longer short sleeves will appreciate this, and I don’t mind that ruffle detail either. It’s a nice way to participate in the trend without feeling too froo-froo.

VERDICT: Undecided.

Wit & Wisdom Three Quarter Sleeve Blouse in DUSTY SLATE/ LAVENDER

at Nordstrom (S) // jeans (6) // sandals (8)

And finally, I really like this top! It’s soft and thin and has a really nice drape. It looks good both front tucked and untucked, and it comes in a few different prints.

VERDICT: Keeping!

And that’s a wrap!

  1. Wow!!!!! Your post are so informative and such good options. I’m the one who wanted Wit n’ Wisdom jeans styled, but I’m like you, not sure if its too much whispering on the upper. I see how you are overwhelmed. You have ordered and tried soooo many wide leg pants and they do look good on you…..I don’t think I can really pull them off, but just remember, you are a shorts gal in the Summer and how many long length, wide leg pants will you throw on? So, pick a few of your favorites and just return the others. LOL Easy for me to say. I feel so far behind. I haven’t really started my Spring shopping, much less summer shorts. LOL I need to get moving. I’ve been focusing on all my kids/grands coming for Easter and all I have to do. I want to first try on what I have from last season before ordering new. Thanks for your great post. You do soooo much work.

  2. Really love the Paige Nellie white pants on you, this is the first wide leg that I think even I could wear being 5’2″and they look so nice on you with a variety of tops and shoes; finally these look like you’re wearing them rather than they’re wearing you. Really wanting that kelly green top, I have an old one that needs replacing. So far as the “comfort” sandals I like the Naot tan ones best so far as looks. I’m loving seeing all the styles of sandals and now I’m confused on which ones I “need”? ha!
    Have a great weekend!

    1. If you haven’t ordered the green shirt, it’s on “final sale” at J.Crew for a great price! ❤️

  3. I love the Paige and AG white jeans. I like all the shorts too, but aging has not been kind to my thighs. I need at least a 5-inch inseam. I can’t wait to wear ALL my white stuff!

  4. Great post! I love the tops in the bright spring colors, especially the prints. Solid black or olive T shirts don’t say ‘look at my new spring clothes’ to me. I find them rather unisex/mundane. I like cheerful colorful fun and feminine for spring and it is sometimes hard to find so I am glad you showed something other than all solids. As a petite the wide legs can be overpowering. Probably stick to skirts and shorts, But they look great on taller gals.

  5. I have the first pair of Naot sandals that you modeled and wore them all over Italy and France. They were super comfortable and walkable. Sometimes a little style needs to be sacrificed for comfort! I personally don’t think they are bad looking either…..but I do save them more for the comfort level.
    Sandy
Ps. You are going to LOVE Italy!

  6. I don’t care for the wide leg cropped pants on anyone. Know it is the current style and maybe just takes some getting used to. However the Paige Nellie is the most flattering on you.

  7. I really love how you style clog sandals. I also watched Reece Witherspoon in, Your Place or Mine and loved how she styled them with jean skirts. Would you wear them with shorts or dresses?

  8. I’m so overwhelmed with all the wide leg choices. Would you consider doing a post comparing all that you’ve tried on? You know, with all your spare time? 😉

  9. This is awesome and enjoyable as all your try-on hauls are! I’m glad you’re embracing the patch pockets. I love some of my pants with those and think they look great on you. Also appreciate the white shorts you tried, they can be hard to get right w/o giving diaper vibes!

  10. Finally able to read this one! Been nonstop busy around here. And now I’m getting a migraine. I just ordered the Kelly green J.Crew shirt. Love the way it looks with white pants! I think that might be my band banquet outfit (with the espadrille wedges from last year) for next month. (It’s not as dressy/formal as it sounds! Lol) I’m ordering the Quince cashmere tee for my son’s graduation party. It will be an all day crawfish boil, so I want to be comfortable but still look nice.
