I’ve had requests for more activewear looks, and this is the perfect walking the dog outfit and my go-to mom uniform for fall.
On the days that I don’t go running, I try to at least get out and walk the dog so I can get my Fibit steps in for the day. In the summertime, that just means throwing on sneakers with my shorts and t-shirt, but in the fall and winter, I usually want to wear activewear so I can move comfortably and don’t get my street clothes sweaty.
In fact, sometimes I’ll wear an outfit like this all day if I’m not going anywhere besides the grocery store. It’s cute enough to take you out and about but comfortable enough for walking the dog or chasing the kids around the park — not that I do that anymore, but I know some of you have young kids or watch your grandkids from time to time.
These straight-leg Zella Plank Pants are so comfortable. I like how they don’t flare out as much as traditional yoga pants, but they aren’t so skinny that they look like leggings. The contoured seams down the sides create a flattering silhouette.
This packable vest is perfect for chilly mornings and breezy nights. It’s lightweight and not bulky at all, and the synthetic down insulation is supposed to keep you comfortable even when wet.
I haven’t ever had one quite like this before. Most down vests I try are bulky and make me feel like the abominable snowman, but this one is thin and the shape is flattering.
For size reference, I’m wearing the medium, and it fits snugly but not too tight. I can zip it if I want to, but I will probably usually leave it open. It lays nicely when it is open. I have returned so many vests over the years because they don’t sit right over the front of my body, but this one is perfect.
Underneath, I’m wearing the Zella Fresh Tech Tee in Teal Compass. I wish I’d thought to get a picture of it without the vest so you can see how cute it is. It’s thin and lightweight and slightly longer in the back than the front. Here’s a look at the back.
The scoop neck and diagonal seams are figure-flattering, and it has some nice details like cooling mesh insets and thumbholes. I have long arms, so sometimes I find the sleeves on thumbhole shirts to be too short and tug on my hand, but these sleeves are long and give me plenty of freedom of movement.
By the way, that pink water bottle I’m carrying is my favorite. They are spendy, but they work soooo well and keep my water cold for hours.
For sneakers, I’m wearing the Nike Pegasus 32. There are only a few sizes left, but the Pegasus 33 are out now, and there are tons of colors available in that style. These sneakers have a lot of padding and are very squishy and soft. I love them for walking or hanging out, but I don’t run in them. Because of my past foot injuries, I need a sneaker with more structure for running. For running, I wear the Saucony Guide.
I about died of heat stroke shooting this outfit in 90-degree heat on Saturday, but this will be perfect when cooler temperatures set in. Savannah had fun, anyway. She’s always up for a walk, no matter what the temperature!
Zella Plank Pants // Zella Fresh Tech Tee // Adidas Flyloft Insulated Vest // Nike Pegasus 32 (the Pegasus 33 is out now with more sizes available)

Very cute work out wear! That vest is perfect. What breed is Savannah? She looks much like my dog, Lexi who is a Havanese. She’s a doll! 🙂
We’re not sure what she is. She was a rescue. She’s some mix of shih tzu, Maltese, etc. 🙂
she’s so cute and your outfit I’m sure is super comfy.
Thanks so much for bearing this extreme heat to bring us some fall ideas! Love your blog!
Ha! I do get some funny looks. 🙂
What s great looking outfit & definitely nicer than what so many women wear to run errands! Savannah is so cute. I love the picture of her looking up at you! Kuddos to the photographer! Have a blessed day!
I love that picture too! xo
What size are you wearing for the top?
It’s a medium. 🙂 All three pieces are mediums.
Perfect walking outfit!! (When the weather cools down, of course!)
Perfect activewear outfit and totally up my alley! These photos make me smile! I have a similar black vest that is packable and I too love how thin it is and surprisingly warm! The leggings look great on you too!

Thanks, Carylee!! xo
Love this, so stylist and functional! I actually have a question about the water bottle. Would it fit/be good and not spill for teenagers to take in lunch box? We’ve been using Sigg ones, but I need to replace and this looks like it might work. Any advice is appreciated! Thank u:-)
Yes! I love it because there is no straw or weird drinking mechanism. Just a lid. The only challenge – not losing the lid. It is also metal, so it will dent if dropped. Kids aren’t always as careful as we are. 🙂
LOVE this! Such a perfect fall/winter active or lounging outfit. Living in south Georgia, a vest like that is often the heaviest “coat” I need all winter! So of course I need a closet full of them for options. LOL!
Good point! For you Southern ladies, this could probably be worn all winter long!
These are Great photos! Your dog is adorable! I want to try one of these shirts! The pants look great on you but Im wondering if they would be too long for me? I am 5”3. I wear the Zella live in leggings and love them . You are a trooper for styling this outfit during this crazy heat! ????
The pants seem to sit very low in the site pics. Do you find that is the case?
Hi Joanna, no, they are not as low on me. In fact, they are higher than some Zella pants that I’ve tried. If you like a higher rise, I also ordered these, and I LOOOOOOOVE them. http://rstyle.me/n/bw6rgigthw
I have such a issu with being able to zip these vests having a larger chest! I’ll have to try this one. 🙂
YES! Exactly. It is a problem. 🙂 This one was snug to zip, but it zipped. 🙂
Super cute! LOVE the last picture of you and Savannah! 🙂
Super cute! Dog walking is one of my most frequent clothing “occasions,” lol. The longer-backed top speaks my language 🙂
I do love a few pockets for hiding those little baggies and a few treats I bring along… Any pockets in the pants?
No pockets on these. 🙂
I love this outfit! This is pretty much the style I live in most days in the fall and spring. Comfortable and nice enough for most of my daily activities. I dress up a bit more if I’m going out to lunch or have a parent-teacher conference, etc, but most days it’s errands, working from home, teaching yoga or going to yoga class, or walking/coffee with a friend. Thanks for keeping us cute even in activewear. I’d love to see more active looks!
Thanks, Susan! I’ll keep ’em coming. 🙂
Keep more of these outfits coming. Lots of stay at home moms read your blog & we are running kids to practices, activities etc & need outfits like this one. Love it. Keep ’em coming!
Cute outfit but I would have died on the spot from the heat. Savannah is so cute. .
