Tim Hortons vs. Dunkin Donuts

When my husband, mom, brother, and son decided this morning to go on a day hike, my dad and I figured it was as good a time as any to try out the donuts at the new Tim Horton’s in town.

Now I’m one of those die-hard Krispy Kreme fans, and it is my personal opinion that there is no other donut even worthy of comparison to the King of Donuts, the Krispy Kreme original glazed donut.

But.  When there is no Krispy Kreme available, I’m certainly not one to turn down a good ol’ Dunkin Donut.

I’ve heard a lot about Tim Hortons.  Canadians are quite proud of their trademark donut chain.  So when I saw one in town the other day, I determined that I would have to try one before we head home.

At Dunkin Donuts, the chocolate frosted is my donut of choice.  So I figured if I’m going to do an accurate comparison, I would need to try a chocolate frosted at Tim Hortons.  Dad and I took the girls in and placed our order.

And the verdict?

Eh.  It was okay.  Nothing to get too excited about.  Very cakey and thick.  If the Krispy Kreme donut is a 10 on a 10-point scale, then I would give Dunkin Donuts an 8 and Tim Horton’s a 7.  I would certainly go back, but with a Dunkin Donuts just a mile down the road (as is the case here) I would go to the Dunkin Donuts.

And I’d bypass both and travel across state lines to get a Krispy Kreme.

So what’s your donut opinion?

  1. Krispy Kremes are ok. I like cake donuts. Naked cake donuts from Kings Donuts in Concord, CA to be precise. They just closed down all of the Krispy Kremes in my neck of the woods due to over saturation of product. My kids are way bummed.

  2. Krispy Krispy Kreme. There’s not really much else to say. I’d travel state lines with you!

  3. I heart Dunkin’ Donuts. A DD glazed is my FAVE in the WHOLE WORLD. MY OB-GYN is near the only DD in our area and I always treated myself to one for every prego appt. I think Krispy Kreme glazed are overdone, but I like the other varieties. And I like Timmy’s ok, but I REALLY love their Cafe Mocha. YUM!!

  11. ugh. i will be a party pooper and say that i really don’t like donuts. i like my fried food salted in french-fry form.
but when i do venture out for a donut with the kiddies, i get an eclair from the farmers market while they eat theri pink-sprinkled donuts. hee hee.

  12. well, Tim Hortons has the best iced cappucinos in the world… and as for donuts – try the sour cream glaze and the vanilla cream ones… THOSE are the donuts that are worth going to Tim Hortons for!

  13. When we lived in Ohio we were inundated with Tim Horton commercials, but no Tim Horton restaurant was around. I always wondered JUST how great their coffee and donuts really were. I was never a big donut fan…grew up on Daylight Donuts (Walmart of donuts). Then I was introduced to the HOT sign from Krispy Kremes. Melts in your mouth goodness. Will have to claim that as my favorite since I haven’t tasted Tim’s and haven’t had a DD in years!

  14. Tim Horton’s I hate to say, aren’t what they used to be. I know, I know, I’m a Canadian and I’ve just committed an unspeakable crime by saying that. Please don’t send the donut police after me. They changed the recipe and the way they make them a few years ago and it’s just not the same. The reason it’s cakey is they baked them now instead of deep frying them. Blech. Now their bagels? Yumm-o!

  15. Donuts are my heart and soul. I say:

#1 Krispy Kreme all the way

    a close second is:

    Winchells.

I want a donut. Or seven.

  16. OMG, I totally dreamt about donuts the other morning. Huge, tire-sized donuts. Perhaps it’s because I’m pregnant, and wallowing in a state with no Dunkin Donuts. The only think I love more than a Dunkin Donut is Dunkin Donut’s coffee. There’s no better coffee in the world.

  17. dunkin donuts it is! of course, i live in the land of dunkin donuts, Connecticut! there are four within 3 minutes from my home. i suppose krispy kremes are good, but in my opinion – only good for the original style.

  18. I can never decide between a chocolate frosted and a chocolate glazed at Dunkin Donuts. I agree with you about Krispy Kreme, but only if you get them HOT.

    I’ve never tried Tim Hortons.

  19. Blueberry cake donuts from Dunkin Donuts are the best in my donut book. I will pretty much eat cake donuts from anywhere though.

  20. Used to be a Dunkin girl (for real..in high school I worked there) But now I cannot resist the KK HOT light.

  21. I never caught on to the Krispy Kreme fad (they just aren’t enough to satisy me). Don’t get me wrong, I love any donuts. The problem is that my “Opa” is a darn good baker and had always provided us with endless high quality pastries and donuts. So, of course, his are my favorite. After that, any cake donut will do. I do have a special spot in my heart for a Dunkin Donut Boston Creme. My favorite breakfast since my Opa retired is a Large Dunkin Coffee with 2 Boston Cremes. My favorite afternoon treat is a nap after that caffeine/sugar buzz wears off.

  22. When I see a Krispy Kreme with the “Hot Donuts Now” sign lit up, it is a thing of beauty! There is NOTHING, and I repeat Nothing better than a hot Krispy Kreme donut and a glass of milk. I only have one about 2 times a year because they are pure fat and sugar, but twice a year it’s worth it!!!

Love the new banner. It looks so cute!!!

  23. I love Krispy Kremes original glazed, HOT please! But then I also love the choc glazed cream filled and some of the seasonal donuts. I’m not crazy about their donut holes, though. For that, I like to go to the little hole-in-the-wall places that are on every corner around here. I also like a plain cake donut sometimes, from a hole-in-the-wall.

We don’t have very many Dunkin Donuts around here these days, and I’ve never seen a Tim Horton’s. Krispy Kreme is about 15 miles away, so I have to be in the neighborhood, or in very deep need.

My final answer is this: Depends on what I’m in the mood for. :>)

  24. Well, being Canadian and a fellow lover of the coffee, I feel the need to clear a tiny thing up… we aren’t proud of our Tim Horton’s doughnuts… it’s ALL about the coffee!! (I must say though, that DD has the Iced Cappuccino beat, hands down!)

  25. I’m prejudiced. We have a local donut shop that is BEYOND comparison to even Krispy Kremes!

But between the three you mentioned my opinion is:

    Krsipy Kreme -9
    Dunkin Donuts – 7
    Tim Hortons – 6

Our Kroger (grocery chain) has some MIGHTY good glazed donuts too.

I do happen to consider myself somewhat of an expert 😉 haha

  26. Krispy Kreme all the way!!!! Of course, I did have the advantage of growing up in KK’s “birthplace”!! Nothing beats one hot off the belt. Although I do like Dunkin’s creme filled better.

  27. Wow! I get overwhelmed with preparing for homeschooling for a couple days, and look at this!!!

Who knew donuts would bring everyone out of the woodwork. (My personal favorite is Kempf’s Donut Bank. [www.donutbank.com] It’s a local place here in Southern Indiana.)

BTW, I usually read from my RSS, so I don’t know when you changed your layout, but I love it! Super Cute!

  28. I am a true donut afficionado – and Canadian to boot (so my opinion means something eh?). All the large donut chains have their drawbacks in one way or another. Most of the time the time, their products are simply way too sweet, which is especially true of Krispy Kremes.

I am often pleasantly surprised by those mom and pop operations that seem to get everything right – not just the donuts but good service that reminds you that you are a customer in an eating establishment and not just another nameless walk-in customer in a food factory.

For the record, the best donut place I have found in a very long time is Peter Pan Donuts on Manhattan Avenue in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. With its curvy counters, vinyl-topped stools, and pleasant staff, it is authentically retro, both in ambiance and quality.
