Two Ways To Wear Knee Boots This Winter

Zappos sponsored

Knee boots are a classic that never really go out of style, but they’re having a moment this season, and I’m here for it. Today I’m styling a pair of black suede knee boots two ways. These winter looks are perfect for the holidays and beyond, and everything is available at Zappos!

The traditional knee-high boot gets an update for the season with an elongated pointy toe and sculptural heel. The quality on these boots is really lovely. The 2 3/4″ heel is very walkable, and they have a padded footbed for extra comfort.

This cozy sweater dress was a pleasant surprise from Zappos. The knit is thick and soft, and it skims the body without clinging. I appreciate the generous sleeve length and the relaxed turtleneck, and it comes in this beautiful shade of charcoal grey as well as a pretty beige/taupe. This dress runs true to size; I’m wearing the small.

Sadly, the inventory on this dress has been depleted over the weekend. It was fully stocked on Friday! But here are a few more options to consider.

You may notice I’m wearing fishnet stockings. Bare legs with boots and dresses was a thing for a long time, but that’s starting to look dated to me… to say nothing of terribly impractical. It gets quite cold here in the northeast, and I’m all about covering my pale, goosebumpy legs with tights or hose.

Fishnet is a new look for me, but I love how they add texture and interest to the outfit. You could also wear plain tights in charcoal or black; I have this Spanx pair, and they’re very comfortable.

I’m also wearing this Commando slip. I’ve had this slip for years, and I wear it under all my knit dresses. It’s short enough to fit under just about any length dress, and the straps are adjustable to your preference. It’s made in the USA, and I have the M/L size, for reference.

To bling up the look for holidays or a dressy dinner out, I wore these Kendra Scott statement earrings in the gunmetal. They don’t show up very well in my dark hair, but I love how they complement this outfit.

For my second outfit, I wore these black suede knee boots over skinny jeans with a black sweater. These jeans are the AG Farrah, and they’re an ankle-length skinny jean in a classic mid-indigo wash with subtle whiskering at the hip. The higher rise keeps them current, and the legging-like fits allows the boots to slip on easily over top.

And how fun is this sweater? The back has this unexpected criss-cross design that makes it more of a party look, but you don’t have to save it for an occasion. I actually wore this to dinner the other night with black jeans and booties.

It also has a trendy balloon sleeve, which helps keep the look modern. This sweater also comes in camel, and it runs true to size.

Here are some more cozy sweaters you can bling up for the holidays and also enjoy all winter long:

I carried a metallic wristlet for more of an event look. Adding a metallic clutch always takes an outfit to the next level. This one is similar.

For accessories, I wore the same Kendra Scott statement earrings, but this time in the gold. I ordered both from Zappos, but the gold seems to be sold out at the moment. I don’t feel like the sweater needs a bracelet or necklace, but you can definitely add one or both, depending on your personal style. I generally prefer a more minimalist vibe.

I love how these suede boots dress up both of these simple outfits, and I’m so happy to see knee boots making a comeback. I have a feeling these are going to be a regular part of my outfit rotation this fall and winter.

  1. I don’t see where there’s a chart of how to know what size of tights to get. Years ago I was told on pantyhose to size way up. That they last longer and still don’t sag if you do. How well do these hold up without running? Are they durable like tights or more fragile like hose?

    1. They’re kind of in between but definitely be careful with them. More careful like hose. I saw a size chart somewhere – maybe google Spanx tights size chart it there isn’t one on the Zappos website.

  2. That dress plus the boots look fabulous on you! Off the subject…where did you get your outdoor planters. Have been looking for some just that size. Merry Christmas!

  3. I love both outfits with the boots. I’ve never worn a sweater dress, but they look great on you!
Hope you have a safe trip to pick up Caroline and back home on the road. At least the weather here (MA) looks good for today and tomorrow. It will be so great for you to have her back home for Christmas.

  4. I like that those boots have a fashionable slouch texture to them instead of just looking like a plain shaft (which, to me, often can make other boots look like you’re wearing them to go fishing in or ride a motorcycle…lol!).

I think, re: tights sizing: it’s always better to go up a size. I’m 5′ 7″, but either a 1X tall/queen (even if I find the waist then hits practically under my chest — just think of it being an added bonus of shaping WITHOUT needing shapewear in that event!) FITS FAAAARRR BETTER in the thighs and hips when you go to adjust them.

  5. Hey Jolene! Hope your trip goes well. Please tell me more about the earring. What’s the closure and are they heavy? Your daughter will do great!

  6. First…..you look great in this whole outfit. Perfect. I’m so happy to see the fishnet tights instead of bare legs. I see bloggers styling bare legs Fall/Winter and here where I live, it doesn’t work and I’m like you……. I don’t like my legs in the Winter……well, don’t like them in the Summer either. Ha Ha, so I’m glad to see tights is okay. I have a burgundy sweater dress from Loft from a few years ago that is in perfect shape and even has some balloon sleeve, so still in style that I could do this same look. I just need new black knee high boots. I like the suede look over leather. Mine are leather. I’m looking for not so pointed toe and I’d prefer, for me, a regular heel shape. But, these looks great on you. As for the slip, doesn’t it slide up? I don’t wear one for that reason. I feel like I’m constantly pulling it down. Maybe this one you recommend has different material? I haven’t worn a slip for years. I’m going to save this post, so I have the information for the tights and slip if needed. Great post. Have a safe flight and fun trip home with Caroline. I bet you both are so excited for her to be home for the holidays. I remember those days. I loved having my college kids home and all 3 of mine in the home NEST. 🙂

  7. Two great outfits but I just love the first one. The sweater dress, fishnets, and boots work so well together, and the earrings finish the look beautifully.

  8. I love your Rebecca Minkoff clutch. I tried to buy that a few weeks ago, but it is sold out and I can’t find it anywhere. Love it with the dress!
