The winter solstice may be a few weeks away yet, but winter weather is certainly here to stay, and the Lord & Taylor Friends & Family Sale has arrived just in time.
I’ve always found Lord & Taylor to have an extensive selection of quality coats and winter accessories, and their sale prices are hard to beat.
During their Friends & Family Sale, you can save up to an extra 30% off almost everything and 15% off almost all beauty, so if your winter outerwear wardrobe is in need of a refresh, this is the perfect time to stock up at great prices before sizes and colors start getting picked over. Best of all, you still have the entire season to enjoy them!
I’m of the opinion that every woman living in a cold weather climate should have at least two coats — a cozy parka for casual wear and a classic wool reefer or walking coat for dress-up.
This quilted faux fur trimmed parka comes in 4 color choices, but this deep cherry red is hands-down my favorite. It’s such a great shade of red, and it contrasts beautifully with the faux fur lining on the hood.
It’s fairly lightweight for a parka, and it has a super flattering shape and a nice everyday length — long enough to cover your hips but not so long as to be cumbersome.
The black zipper on the front and the pockets is a nice detail, but the faux fur trimmed hood makes the coat. That said, it’s removable if you want the option not to wear it.
With code FRIENDS, this parka comes down to $56. That is an amazing price for a stylish, practical coat that you can wear every day all winter long. For reference, I have the medium, but I think a small would probably fit better. It all depends on how many layers you plan to wear underneath.
I’m also wearing these AG Farrah high rise ankle jeans and this cashmere v-neck. The jeans are 30% off, which is a great deal on AG, and the cashmere sweater comes down to $49 with code FRIENDS. For size reference, I have the medium in the sweater and the 29 in the jeans.
Don’t forget footwear when it comes to updating your winter outerwear. These lace-up storm boots are super warm and comfortable, but they run very small. I ordered my usual 8, but I definitely need a 9 in these.
That said, I love the styling and functionality. They even have a side zipper so you don’t have to untie and re-tie every time you put them off and on. #gamechanger
Gloves and scarves are also a must in my neck of the woods, and these Isotoner SmartDRI Textured Tech Gloves are the perfect pairing for this coat.
The knit styling is more casual, so it compliments the quilted parka, and the smartDRI® technology is designed so any water that hits them will roll right off, keeping your hands drier than typical knit gloves. Plus they’re touchscreen friendly — an absolute must in this connected world, and the non-slip palm detail ensures a secure grip.
I’m also wearing this fringed woven scarf, which is lightweight but provides a nice barrier against wind and cold.

When you need something dressier for work or church or going out to dinner, a wool walking coat is the answer. This stand-collar boucle coat by Kenneth Cole Reaction is so classy, and right now it’s just $93 with code FRIENDS.
You can’t go wrong with a classic black or camel coat, but I think a color is so much fun — especially when you tend to wear a lot of neutrals as I do. This periwinkle blue is universally flattering and pairs so well with all the neutral shades. For reference, I’m wearing the medium in this coat.
I like to pair leather gloves with a wool coat — they’re dressier than knit gloves, and the textures compliment each other nicely.
These gloves have a cashmere lining as well, which makes them super luxe, and I love how this luggage color compliments the periwinkle blue coat. This color is also nice with black, grey, and ivory for you neutral lovers out there!
The thing with leather gloves is they often come in very specific sizes, so you have to try them to figure out your size. For reference, I ordered these in a size 7, and I’d say my hands are average to long — hopefully that’s somewhat helpful if you’ve never discovered your glove size.
Underneath this coat, I’m wearing this cashmere turtleneck in the camel and the same jeans as above. It’s a great classic combo that works for so many occasions. If you’ve been wanting to add AG jeans or a cashmere sweater to your wardrobe, this is a great opportunity to do so. The sweater is under $50, and the jeans are 30% off!
I love a tall leather boot when I want to be dressed up but still keep my feet dry and warm in the wintertime. These are Aerosoles, so the comfort is outstanding. They have a flattering almond toe and a just-right 3.25″ heel. This is my favorite heel height because you get the effect of high heels but they’re still walkable.
You can’t go wrong with a classic wool coat and leather gloves for your dressier winter outfits. This look will take you from work to dinner and anywhere else you’re going when you need to be warm and cozy but want to look fashionable and stylish.

Very, very cute but don’t need in Savannah. Would get if it was ever winter here. 🙂
Great post today! Attractive and functional outerwear. These outfits look so good on you too. So glad to hear about the teen gift guide. I found several great ideas from it last year, and have been wondering if you were posting one again this year.
Those are fantastic deals! How was the sizing on the coats? Did they run true to size?
Yeah, I think I said the red one seems to run a little big. I have a medium in both, but could probably go with a small in the red.
Such great coats Jo-Lynne! Love the colors you chose.👍🏽
Love your blog, looking forward to your teen guide. I found items from your list last year, like the record player that earned me title of “cool grandmother “.
I am unable to wear wool, including cashmere appreciate any sweaters you feature without wool.
Oh that is sad. Love me some cashmere. 🙂 I’m sure you’re not alone. I’ll keep that in mind when I’m sourcing looks for future posts.
Love this post and especially love those boots! I like that you chose colors that I wouldn’t even take a glance at. It makes me remember to consider other color options when I shop. Thanks for that!
Yeah, I love a good neutral coat too, but colors are fun sometimes. 🙂
What size are you wearing in the camel sweater? Great price to stock up on some basics!
I have a medium in both sweaters, so I’d say they’re TTS or size up if in between. I often wear smalls in other brands.
Beautiful coats, Jo-Lynne! I also love how you styled them. Thank you for showing each coat zipped up and/or closed. Some bloggers keep their coats open for each photo, but we need to see what they look like closed! It IS cold out! HA!!!
Ha! Good point. 🙂
Both coats are great! I love wearing a colorful coat in the Winter!
You look awesome in the first outfit! I definitely need tech friendly gloves with the touch screen in our Ram truck, so I am going to look into the ones you are wearing. I’d also like to get the parka so that I don’t always have to wear my long Lands End quilted parka. Have a fabulous day!
It’s nice for milder weather.
Love! Love! Love! The cherry red coat. It is going on my list asap. Thank you for the post. I too followed your teen gift guide last year and would love for you to post it a little earlier if possible. I have 11 grandkids and three weeks doesn’t give me nearly enough time to shop for all of them. I do appreciate your help nonetheless. Thank you!!
It should be going up later today!
Thank you – I certainly meant no malice…I love your blog/posts and follow them religiously.
Oh, goodness, I know! 🙂 I was just letting you know it will be up soon. 🙂 🙂
Both coats are fantastic! I love wearing a long coat in the Winter!🙂
Are the coats actually warm? I’ve noticed some coats look great but aren’t very functional because they don’t keep you warm! Thanks! You look beautiful in each outfit.
I would say these are both mid-weight. They’re good and cozy, but they aren’t like full length heavy parka. I have one of those (I actually got it at L&T like 8-10 years ago!) and I save that for the coldest days. Mine is a lot like this. In fact, I believe it’s Calvin Klein. https://shopstyle.it/l/WqzC
Hi Jolynne, love all these coats! What size is your CK coat that you linked to?
It’s a medium.
Oh my stars! What a fantastic find and price on the parka. And it looks awesome on you as always. It doesn’t get that cold in Alabama but I couldn’t pass on that price. Plus I’m sure my daughter will borrow it.
I think you’ll find you use it — it’s not super heavy. And that price… 😍
Great post today for winter!
So nice to shop, drink coffee and eat Christmas cookies.
Sorry I missed the boots …but was able to get parka in
Blue for work!
Wearing my loft green sweater today you posted to
Party….so comfy!
Mmmm… Christmas cookies…🍪
Jolynne, I just have to tell you how great you ALWAYS look in the outfits that you style! You are so talented in putting together great looks that I would never think of (how do you do this??). Thank you!!
Why, thank you! I don’t know… sometimes I think my style is way too basic to be a fashion blogger. Haha! Glad you like these looks.
I LOVE that red jacket. If I lived where it was cold I’d definitely be buying it. But, alas, I don’t wear big coats like that here in Phoenix much.
What is Lord and Taylor’s return policy? Thanks!
You have 90 days for most departments, but only 60 days for dresses and Home purchases and 30 for fine jewelry and watches. They do offer Shoprunner, which gives you free shipping and free returns — I highly recommend seeing if you have a credit card or Paypal that is eligible for a free Shoprunner membership.
Oh you can’t have enough coats especially for our winters here in Canada, It can be spring like one day, cold the next , then freezing and oh yeah some rain or snow in the mix of it all. I say you can never have too many coats when the weather changes daily… Love this red one, and it looks great on you. I’m going to venture out very soon and get a red one for my collection.. LOL
Question about coats and skirts or dresses. Should a winter coat be long enough to cover the entire skirt or dress? Growing up in the 80s I was taught yes but now I see lots of car coats that cover any jacket or sweater but not the skirt or bottom of the dress. What do you think looks better?
Love those Aerosole boots!
Just ordered the gloves and I’m super excited about it! I’ve never really been happy with my glove situation for any sustained period of time. Hoping this will remedy that 🙂 I think they’ll look great with my favorite coat and any of my scarves!
The second outfit you featured here is classy beyond words, the way I wish I dressed every day! So simple, clean and classically pretty. Living in Austria, I do need a second winter coat. I have a black, belted, double-breasted Tommy Hilfiger coat that I love and have been wearing for 5 seasons, but I need something more casual, too. Thanks for your inspiration today.
Where did the purse come from in your Dec 5 post? -Thanks
If you mean the cognac hobo, it’s an old Tory Burch. 🙂
Both looks are great! I ended up buying 4(!) coats from Loft this year lol. I never saw the need for more than one but I am enjoying having different options depending on the weather or occasion.
