Okay, friends, help a girl out! It’s getting down to the wire, and I need to figure out what to pack for 10 days in England next month. I’ve been talking about this trip for months, and somehow it still snuck up on me. Now I leave in less than three weeks!
I’m feeling a little overwhelmed because May is such an awkward time of year to dress for. I won’t know until the last minute whether I’ll need warmer or cooler pieces, and every item counts because I’m committed to going COO (carry-on only)—just one carry-on size suitcase and a personal bag.

Here’s the scoop: I’m going on a women’s group trip with Walkabout Tours, a boutique tour company run by my friend Shelly. We met years ago through blogging and have stayed in touch ever since. When she started hosting these small-group tours, I knew I wanted to go on one, and this spring, the timing finally worked out!
I’m arriving a day early to acclimate and staying two extra nights at the end to make the most of my time (and squeeze in a little shopping—I mean, priorities!). That means I’ll be gone for 9–10 days total, and I need to pack accordingly.
Why Carry-On Only?

Similar trench // Shayla pullover // Pistola Kinsley flare // Paul Green Hadley // Raffia hoops // Away The Everywhere bag // Away The Bigger carry-on
Shelly has strongly recommended that we all pack in a carry-on suitcase because we’ll be moving around England via planes, trains, and automobiles—and we’re each responsible for our own luggage. When I travel with Paul, I know I can rely on him to help me lift my heavy suitcase or navigate cobblestone streets. But this time, I’ll basically be on my own, and I don’t want to be that girl struggling with a giant suitcase and holding everyone up while the rest of the group strolls merrily along with their light carry-ons.
For me, the challenge is two-fold. First, I’m trying to narrow down what clothing to bring—things that mix and match well, give me options, and don’t take up extra space. And second, I travel with quite a few toiletries and hair tools, not to mention my regular medications, supplements, and just-in-case pharmacopeia (I like to be prepared for anything, especially when traveling abroad!). Then there are all the other random accoutrements… umbrella? Travel steamer? Chargers and adapters? It adds up quickly.
With all that in mind, I pared down my toiletries during our Florida trip and set aside only what I truly need when I’m away from home. I’ll decant everything I can, and I plan to use a good old quart-size Ziploc bag for my liquids—because, well, Heathrow.
I have a T3 travel dryer and flat iron that are both EU-outlet approved and smaller than the Dyson versions I use at home and usually travel with, so I think I’m set there. The real conundrum is the clothing!
What Makes This Trip Tricky
Packing is always a bit of a puzzle, but this trip adds a few extra variables. When it comes to clothes and shoes, I can be a minimalist—I’m fine with mixing, matching, and re-wearing things. But I also like having options, especially when I don’t know most of the ladies I’m traveling with or what the locals will be wearing. I’m not so concerned about blending in, but I do want to feel confident and happy with what I’m wearing.
And then there’s England’s famously unpredictable spring weather. I won’t know until a few days before I leave whether I’ll need outfits for cool, damp days or warm, sunny ones.
The good news is, I do have a set itinerary, unlike our fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants Florida trips. That means I can plan around specific events and excursions.
That’s where you come in! I’m hoping you can help me get this packing list and my outfits nailed down.
What I’m Packing for England… Maybe
I created two potential capsule wardrobes—one for warmer weather and one for cooler—and I’ll finalize everything once I have a better sense of the forecast. I tried on a bunch of these outfit combinations yesterday, which definitely helped me weed out a few things.
I still had way too many tops, but creating these graphics really helped me see how everything comes together. I was able to pare down a bit more. In each potential capsule, I have 7 tops (maybe still too many!), plus 2 pairs of jeans, a dress, 3 pairs of shoes (including the pair I’ll wear on the plane), and 2 coats/jackets (I can wear one on the plane if need be). I also have one crossbody bag and one tote.
My travel outfit isn’t included in those numbers, but it’s pictured below. I could re-wear parts of it during the trip, but more likely, I’ll just wear it around the house when I want loungewear that isn’t pajamas.
No matter which option I end up going with, the black rain coat and the stripe dress are both pretty much set. I’m hoping it’ll be warm enough (60s and 70s) to bring a lightweight jacket as an outfit completer piece, but if it looks like it’s going to be chilly and/or rainy, I’ll bring my crop trench instead. It’s more of a second outerwear option that I’d remove indoors. I could technically leave it home, but I like the idea of having two outerwear options for variety’s sake, since I’ll probably be wearing one every day.
I also have two bags—one crossbody for everyday use, and a Longchamp tote. The tote folds flat in my suitcase, and I can use it on longer sightseeing days when I want a larger bag. It also gives me the option to check my suitcase on the way home and use the tote as my personal item, in case I do a little shopping while I’m there.
Okay, here’s how it breaks down. Let me know what you think, and feel free to give advice if you think I’m missing something—or if you see anything else I can remove. I haven’t tried packing it all into my suitcase yet, but it should work!
England Travel Warmer Weather Capsule

In the warmer weather capsule, I have five short-sleeve tops and two long-sleeve options. One is a floral blouse I can wear with the black jeans and ballet flats for dinner or the theater; the other is a versatile black sweater for cooler days.
I’m planning to use the beige Talbots utility jacket as a light layer over the short-sleeve tops—it should work with all of them. The dress, jeans, and shoes stay the same in both capsule versions. Below are the outfit possibilities with this one, along with links to shop everything.

England Travel Cooler Weather Capsule

In the cooler weather capsule, I swapped out two of the short-sleeve tops for cozy sweaters and opted for the crop trench instead of the Talbots jacket. It’s a little warmer, fits better over the sweaters, and it’s water-resistant—which is helpful if we get rainy days. Once again, I’ve pulled together the outfit combinations, and you’ll find links to shop everything below.

When we travelled to London in June a couple of years ago, it was super cold and rainy and we walked for miles and miles around London. My capsule wardrobe saved me; slim ankle jeans, good quality basic crew neck tees, crew neck sweaters, long jcrew raincoat, warm socks, Birkenstock Londons and flats carried me everywhere. Leather sneakers would not have worked on that trip, think pouring rain every day! Although I heard that the following week brought nice sunny days. I would definitely add a simple dress for going to tea or similar occasions.
I do have a dress! 🙂 I’m curious how the Birk Londons were better than leather sneakers in the rain? What flats did you bring?
I’ve been trying to fine tune travel
Capsule wardrobe. I didn’t see a scarf in your photos. I think you can change up a basic outfit with small scarves or pashmina. They also can be worn in cool weather and on the plane. Chico’s has a travelers line. Many of these items are reversible and can have two different looks with one top. I also like monochromatic layers.
I don’t love scarves as outfit accessories, but I do have that zestt travel wrap I was debating about bringing. Seems like an obvious yes, but it’s a smidge bulky, and I don’t always end up using it a lot. I might throw it in, though. It would also work well with that dress if I don’t want to wear the jacket.
The scarf everyone keeps mentioning isn’t so much a fashion accessory as a warmth option. A plain neutral pashmina type scarf can be added around your neck for warmth…its amazing what a difference it can make when it’s chilly and rolls up small to carry with you each day…just in case. Last summer in chilly San Francisco, mine saved me and I had it on and off numerous times during the day.
Agree 100% about the scarf. Lightweight scarf has been a lifesaver on several June trips to Europe.
I’m guessing most of the days will include a jacket of some sort. So, scarves are nice to give your pictures variety. All outside pictures will look the same without the scarf accessory, particularly if people cut off your shoes in pics. Just a thought.
I just got back from Prague/Vienna/Munich. I try, but I’m never dressed quite as polished as you are! But here are my thoughts. Dark jeans, black jeans, black pants, black athletic pants. T-shirts that are some combination of white, black, black/white stripes, burgundy. Black cardigan. The Athleta Raincoat (wore it once) and a packable black puffer jacket. Maybe a long sleeved shirt/light sweater. It ended up being high 60s-80s while we were there, so I was HOT! They don’t believe in AC in Prague, Vienna and Munich! 😂 I took 4 pairs of shoes. I wore 2. My favs that I could have worn with essentially everything were my white w/black new balance 327s. I did have a pair of black Maryjane Vivianas that I wore for a couple of dinners out, but they weren’t super comfortable on the cobblestones even though I am fine in them for a day at school. Everyone where we were wore a black puffer coat and white sneakers. For some reason Europeans can throw on anything and look chic, but I way over packed!!! I was able to wash in all of the Airbnbs, but had to hang to dry, so jeans were a 2 day process! 😄 And, while I had 3 pairs of jeans with me, I only wore one of them and just washed them. 🤦♀️ I have a carry-on backpack that I highly recommend…feel free to email me if you want any other thoughts! I am by no means a travel expert…just love clothes and planning!
Yes, happy to hear your thoughts! Interesting that you only wore one pair of jeans. I was debating 3, but I think I can make do with 2. I’ll be sick of them by the end, for sure.
What is the carry-on backpack? I’ve debated the AWAY backpack, but I really like my Everywhere Bag.
And I JUST got in the white w/black New Balance 327s — I was debating swapping them out for the VEJAs, but I’m not sure they go as well with the tops I’m bringing. They’re also quite bulky, so I’d need to wear them on the plane, which I can do… They might look really cute with the cargo pants, actually. I am also debating if I want to bring the olive Athleta cargo pants, or the black pair.
You wore a puffer in 60-80 degrees? I figured I’ll wear that black Lululemon rain coat more than anything. So interesting to hear what worked and what didn’t!
100% bring the New Balance 327s for 3 reasons:
1. The most comfortable shoes I have owned and I have finicky, painful feet. I can walk for hours and my feet are cushioned, supported, and stable even on uneven surfaces.
2. They are a great juxtaposition shoe as well as athleisure shoe!
3. Your Vejas and Paul Greens look very similar…the 327s will give you variety!
My first thought when reading through this post was that I hope you’re not stressing out too much, Jo-Lynne. No matter what you pack, you’ll be fine! And you’re going to have such an amazing time. I somehow missed that you were going without Paul until I saw this post. A carry-on definitely makes sense, especially since you’ll have access to do laundry at some point. I find that making my semi-final packing decisions a week before I leave and then not thinking about it for a few days gives me a fresh perspective to make my final decisions the day before I go. I can’t wait to hear about your trip when you return!
No, I think it’s fun and interesting to talk though it all. And that’s why I’m deciding all this now, so I’m not a big stressball when it gets down to the wire. It’s not like I can’t buy something I forget or decide I need once I get there, but there is something very satisfying about nailing your packing list for a trip. 🙂 I did that with Italy and I hope I feel that way when this one is behind me.
Consider a “yes-and” approach to the advice from so many caring and well seasoned travelers. As so many have already said (YES):
– ditch one pair of sneakers
– pair down jeans
– bring a simple pashmina scarf
– don’t pack an umbrella
AND:
Leave your suitcase only 90% full so that you can buy some things that will spark-joy/fill a need while you are there. I rarely regret under-packing nor do I regret my purchases while on the road. Have a great adventure!
Check out Calpak for carry-on backpacks. I’ve tried several brands and they’re definitely my favorites. I always travel COO and after the initial adjustment I doubt if I go back to hauling big suitcases around on overseas trips.
I’ve been to England many times. I’d do one waterproof jacket/coat – probably knee length and maybe removable lining.. The key is layers. A warm, long-sleeved top(s) under your jacket if particularly cool and/or wet. Remember – jeans can be heavy to pack. Capris? Khaki? England can get hot – and sunny. Sunglasses. I always took 2 pairs of shoes – one for heavy-duty walking and one for going out in evening. Couple days of extra underwear. You never know about re-routed flights. Toiletries – remember it’s fun to try their brands. I did wear leather sneakers for every day touring. They were fine. The most important thing you’ll pack – comfortable shoes. I always packed a color scheme – usually black and tan. Passport pouch to wear under your shirt. England is full of nice people and unfortunately pickpockets – especially in crowded areas. Take a purse you can wear up tightly under your arm – and still use passport pouch in big cities. Pouch hardly a fashion statement, but a stolen passport – you don’t want to go there. Take a photo copy of passport, birth certificate, and extra set of passport photos.
Why two pairs of heavy sneakers? Surely you could get away with one and possibly take your naot sandals if weather forecast looks warm. Also…if rain is in forecast, weather resistant jacket isn’t gonna city it…I get your a fashion person bit sometimes function has to take priority. We had a lot of rain and chill when we traveled to Germany…I was so thankful to have waterproof shoes (vessi) and an actual raincoat, a scarf and travel pants that i ended up wearing constantly that I could.washnin a sink and dry overnight.
Also suggest a packable backpack that can be packed up and carried easily if things don’t always fit into your carry on easily when on the move.
* cut it….not city it..lol. I really need to learn to proofread before I click submit
Hi there!
How exciting for us to experience your trip through your sharing and pics! I haven’t traveled to Europe recently but have done the carryon only trip to Japan, with my daughter a few times! My best advice is – ship back the items you purchase during your trip, because invariably you’ll end up with more than what your carryon can fit!
And you can always buy a larger suitcase the last 2 days you are there! We’ve done that too!
Good advice!
I added the 2nd pair of sneakers when I decided not to bring a pair of boots. I need to switch shoes; I can’t wear the same pair every day, and I don’t think I would like the Naot sandals with the jeans I’m bringing. If I swapped the blue straight ankle jeans for a cropped wide leg pair… then maybe a sandal would be a good alternative to a 2nd pair of sneakers. (I was debating the Anessa instead, so I have 2 different styles, but they aren’t as comfortable—or as flattering, I don’t think—as the MOTHER Dazzler that I’m planning.)
I’m bringing an actual rain coat, so I’m set there, and I can wear my travel pants instead of jeans. Waterproof shoes are another matter. That’s why I was wondering if I should being a pair of boots, but it’s May, so I decided to pack a 2nd pair of sneakers. When it gets closer, I’ll look at the forecast and make a final decision on shoes. I figure, I can always buy something if I get there and find out I didn’t bring the right thing.
Leather sneakers should be waterproof enough. Mine were last year in London the end of April.
Thanks! Good to know.
One more thing – on one trip to England, we had 90 degree weather in London. Not comfortable. Two weeks later, we were in York – very cold with sleet. With English weather, anything can happen.
Do you use your cross body for your passport and wallet? Do you have to put it in your personal item or can you wear when you are boarding the plane. Philly has been strict about not allowing a purse if you have a tote and carryon suitcase.
Yeah, the crossbody fits in the personal bag. Philly can definitely be strict about that! And I do plan to use that for passport and wallet, as well as anything I want easy access to on the plane overnight. (I’ll take it out of my bag once on board.)
Following for all the details! Love your ideas and know you will trim this down once you see what the weather looks like. Your layers look sensible and agree the scarves are an excellent idea. I always keep one tied around my purse in Europe so it’s there when needed. Most everyone wears sneakers everywhere and with everything! A long trench is a must … not sure how helpful the shorter one will be. I would definitely leave your hairdryer behind (even if it’s a travel size) since the hotels provide nice ones. Enjoy every minute of your adventure!
I don’t trust hotel hairdryers, lol. I always bring mine, but if it gets down to the wire, and that is an issue, I can ditch it. I wanted to bring my long trench, but it’s pretty bulky. I was told by multiple people to leave it behind, but I do like the idea of having it… I suppose I could swap it out for the short one. Again, it will depend on weather. If it’s warm, I won’t need it.
The cropped French trench more elavated than the Talbots same color. I’d lose the latter to free up a smidge of room. Love the trench with the striped dress. So chic!
Hm, yeah… I kind of agree. I was also playing around with the EVEREVE Camp Jacket, but it didn’t go as well with a few of the tops. I guess the crop trench can work for warm or cool weather. But I like having an actual outfit topper… maybe that isn’t necessary for this trip, though. We will probably be wearing outerwear most of the time.
I’m impressed! I ALWAYS overpack. You are inspiring me to be a better packer.
How exciting to go to England in May! I was there in May several years ago and we had everything from snow to nearly 80 degrees over a 5 day period. Here’s how I negotiate big weather changes. For outerwear I always take my J.Crew black raincoat with hood. Looks nice and I can wear with everything. I also take my Uniqlo down liner jacket to wear underneath if needed for colder weather. I’m not sure they still make them, but it’s the greatest. I pack a bunch of short sleeve sweaters in neutral colors from J.Crew factory. They look very nice and are thin enough to wear under jackets or alone. I throw in 2 to 3 striped or printed tees for variety and in case it gets warmer. I’ll also put in 1-2 nice dinner out shirts. I’m not really a dress girl, but you could replace the nice shirts with a dress. These all pack small which leaves extra room for a third pair of pants and extra pair of shoes for variety. I always carry my raincoat and liner jacket as I get on the plane so that takes no space in my suitcase. That gives me room for two stylish jackets and a couple cardigans for layering and variety. I use Marie Kondo’s folding method and never have trouble making it fit. That’s a lot of info but hope it helps!
All great advice. Maybe a jacket liner or thin packable puffer would be better than the pranayama wrap, since I won’t really wear that with my outfits. I like having that for wearing over my pajamas in the mornings or evenings, though. It’s cozy. 🙂 But this trip may not afford much time for that.
Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer jacket packs into its own zipper pocket. I love mine.
If you are encountering rain waterproof shoes will save you! Leather sneakers are good, but waterproof shoes are really important. I would also recommend bringing a baseball hat (that can get wet). If you are in crowded cities walking with an umbrella is almost impossible. You’ll constantly be bumping people. I recommend the hat/rain jacket with hood up combo. I went to Ireland last spring and had to buy a hat while there. I was also very happy to have my waterproof hiking boots (even though they aren’t particularly stylish) and an actual rain jacket. I’ll also second the packable backpack- it’s nice to be hands-free and still have your things (including that rain jacket or extra layer).
Just got back from the UK (and Spain)and no-one was wearing any type of baseball cap, you’ll stick out like a sore thumb! I missed bringing a scarf and wish I had one, I agree waterproof is a must for shoes and also a rain coat. If it is pouring that hard, then your umbrella will be important. All hotels have pretty decent hairdryers, so save the space for warmer clothes. Most of the hotels I stayed at also provided really nice toiletries, so ended up using their body lotions etc, so you can save room there.
Leave any “in case” medications at home, there are pharmacies everywhere (Boots) and they carry all the same medications that you would be carrying and take up room in your luggage.
It is doubtful it will ever get close to 70’s, and 60’s is still fairly cold when it is damp.
Have the best time, you will love my home town!
The baseball cap is a good idea. Also, will let me go an extra day without washing hair, haha! The lululemon coat is an actual rain jacket with a hood, and I detest umbrellas, so I’d rather just use that combo.
Do you have much hip wiggle room in the Lulu Lemon rain coat? I love the look of the coat, but sometimes NorthFace and other hipper brands than Lands End are too snug in the hips for my pair shape size 10/12 bottom half. Defeats the purpose of having a rain coat if you can’t zip it!
Yes, but I sized up to a 10. I tried the 8 and it felt tight in the hips, and I knew I wanted plenty of room
I agree with Sharon – one pair of white sneakers. My experience in England was to toss an umbrella in EVERY bag/tote for the day. There seemed to be frequent rain showers – some short, but when I didn’t grab my umbrella it ALWAYS rained! Better safe than sorry. Have fun!
Good packing edits. I just returned from a week in London and the one item everyone was wearing and I wish I had taken was wide leg jeans. As others have mentioned, I would also consider a lightweight scarf, both for warmth on windy days and because women in London wear them year round. Outside of London I think dress is more casual. Have fun!
Someone else told me that everyone was wearing wide leg jeans in London. I could bring a pair, but I never feel as good in them as the ones I’m bringing. Especially with sneakers. So I’m on the fence on that. You all have convinced me to add that zestt travel scarf to my list!
Please remove my last name before posting.
Couple more comments – pack a pillowcase to cover the hotel pillows – you never know if the pillows might be icky. Pack detergent sheets – they’re very lightweight. You can wash thin lightweight clothes and undies in the hotel, roll them in towels to half dry them, and hang them in front of the AC vent. Usually they dry overnight. That way you can pack less clothes. (You probably already do this…) And of course alpaca or Merino wool T-s and long sleeves last a few wears and are versatile in different weather.
I might swap out the waterfall cardigan for a cashmere poncho. That way you can wear your lightweight jacket at the airport and then you can change into the poncho on the plane. That gives you an extra layer if there’s a chillier night you can put it on top of the jacket. I always travel with one. They roll up very small and don’t take a lot of space in your bag. You also could add a jean skirt for more options.
I traveled around England for two weeks in May nearly 30 years ago and we had picture perfect beautiful weather every single day. Bright blue skies and 75 degrees (F). But I realize it’s spring and anything can happen!
Do you ever read Susan Blakey’s blog at https://unefemme.net/ ? She travels to London and Paris regularly and has tons of advice on what to pack. One of her recent posts is about this very topic.
Yes, I know of her! I just looked at her 12 piece capsule. Interesting that she has four pairs of pants. Her style is very different than mine, but it’s still a very helpful post.
Oh, I guess there are only three. 🙂
I am a flight attendant and would definitely only take one pair of sneakers. Also one black jean and one blue jean. When you are moving around with your bags less is definitely easier. Everywhere you go should have a hair dryer so I would consider eliminating yours. The key for this time of year is layers. You could have warmer days. Most people with wear clothes multiple times on this type of trip. Accessories can change your look. Great choice of items as always. Have a great time!
Why do you need two pairs of sneakers? You can save room by eliminating one pair. I think you have some good combos here. Have a wonderful time!
I need to switch shoes, and I figure I’m going to want to wear sneakers most days. 🙂
I am from England and it all looks great. You are correct the weather can be unpredictable and there can also be a lot of regional variation. It tends to be cooler in the North and warmer around London. Generally, especially around London women are less conservative in the way they dress. Boden encapsulates this – I think some of the prints especially would not be overly poplar here. I didn’t really realize until I moved to the US that the UK trends arrive in the US later. When I first moved here, my dressing style was really out of place when I visited the MidWest. I think your choices will be good and if you are missing something there is plenty of wonderful clothes shopping! If it ends up being really rainy you may need a more substantial pair of shoes or boots.
I was debating boots. But that would change my denim choices… gah! Why is being a woman so complicated? 🤪 Maybe I should consider a pair of waterproof sneakers, as some have suggested.
I love my Vessis. They keep my feet warm and dry in soaking rain and they’re comfortable for lots of walking.
I just ordered some. Not necessarily for this trip, but we are going to Iceland in Sept and I KNOW I will need them there, or something like them. I’ll report back!
I bought a pair of Vessis for my trip to Ireland last November. They were perfect for both city walking and hiking. Waterproof, comfortable, fairly stylish. I highly recommend them.
Good to know!
We went to London and Oxford in Jan 2023 and I wore my waterproof On Clouds everywhere. They worked great
https://www.nordstrom.com/s/on-running-cloud-5-waterproof-running-shoe-women/6591752
Your blog was super helpful when I was thinking about what to pack. Definitely my most successful carry on only packing attempt. I absolutely loved that trip! Have a great time!
Good to know. I’ve ordered a pair.
I’ve been fortunate to travel overseas to various locations. I’ve always traveled with a carry on only. Size down even more. Cut down your tops and shoes if possible. I’d personally take one pair of jeans. I’d definitely use the laundry service at one of your nicer hotels. The services are usually a 24 hour turn around or less!!! Nobody but you even notice you’ve worn the same jeans three times. But your job is to show us clothing styles so maybe my advice is all down the drain!
I am not packing for this trip to show clothes, for the record. I am packing to be as practical as possible, while of course I want to like how I look. If I brought one pair of jeans, I’d be wearing them 9-10 times, lol. I consider 2 pretty minimal, seeing as I plan to wear them almost every day. If anything I would ditch the dress. We do have laundry facilities at our house in the Cotswolds, so I plan to wash some underwear and anything that might get stained. 🙂
I would leave skin routines at home. Cleanser and moisturizer would work fine. Your skin can handle it, and it’s a real time saver too. Of course, bring foundation, blush, lips and eye. I agree May is tricky
I agree about skin routines. Just bring the basic, bare minimum. And check if your hotel has a hairdryer. It may not be your favorite but is such a space saver – I always just bring a flat iron when I travel and use whatever dryer they have (even for checked bags – it can equal another shoe!😂) Same with steamer – I bring either wrinkle resistant or I use shower steam if no steamer at hotel.
I was in London last August and it was sometimes cool weather during parts of the day or drizzly. Maybe plan for a potential mix. And wear your long trench onto plane for space.
I agree with 2 comfy shoes – when you walk a lot it’s good to mix it up.
And for trains, etc the carryon only is imperative. Too hard to maneuver otherwise.
Have a wonderful trip!!
Yeah, I definitely pare down my toiletries when I travel! 🙂
This is amazing! Both look perfect to me (although I hope we can go with the warmer weather styles!). I cannot wait to travel with you, my friend. We’re going to have a great time . . . no matter what you wear. 🙂
SO EXCITED! 🙂
EXCELLENT start! My few thoughts are if you don’t already have it- get the bigger carry on FLEX. We’ve loved them our last few trips and if we find some treasures to bring home checking it is easy on return.
I’m curious if there’s a bottom in a different leg silhouette you can swap one of the dazzlers for? Of course, you know yourself best, I just wonder if you might appreciate a full length boot, wide, or flare leg?
I have traveled my last three trips w/o a blow dryer. Surprised even myself that I was still able to style my hair exactly as at home and save the space in my luggage! I have, a few times, requested a new dryer from reception or housekeeping though! I just don’t think those are items that get replaced unless asked. You must have a really good reason for two sneakers and I trust that. Me personally would pare to one. I was really thinking the new white and Warren would show up in BOTH warm and cool options? I wore mine several days last trip. I took a scarf on my last trip. I wore it twice even though it’s not me! The only reason I only wore it twice was bc it actually untied itself and blew off in the Switzerland wind! LOL!! It was a fun, very unexpected accessory. I chose printed silk for mine.
I’m very excited for you and your trip! I’ve not done international without my husband but I think it’d be cool!
Carry-On Flex, check! I got it a few weeks ago, with this trip in mind. I definitely think it will be a game changer.
I was wanting to bring a pair of flares… in addition to or instead of the Dazzler. But I tried a few of the ones I have and the only ones that are the right length for both pairs of sneakers is the light wash Weekender, but for some reason, I got it in my head that I want darker washes in England… is that silly? While I love wearing flares here, I am afraid I won’t feel as polished while traveling, plus, if it’s rainy, the hems might get wet. A crop wide leg is another option… the PAIGE Anessa?
I should probably ditch the hair dryer… and I still might. But with my extensions, I like knowing I have one that dries efficiently and is also gentle.
I stand by 2 pairs of sneakers, if the only other shoe I am bringing is a ballet flat. If I ditch a sneaker, I need a boot or comfort sandal to alternate. (I could probably ditch the ballet flats and the dress, honestly!)
The White + Warren could go in both… I thought one sweater might be enough, but I am not opposed to two, if the weather looks dicey at all.
As for a silk scarf, if I get there and decide I want one, I will buy one as a souvenir. 🙂 I will bring the zestt wrap, though. I think it will be useful.
It’s funny, people (including Scott) always tell me to buy Hermes or Prada silk scarf while we are traveling… and I just think to myself “but, I’m not a scarf wearer to justify that gorgeous purchase”. I’d rather invest the same funds in a Celine belt (and I DID!!). However, they ARE stunning esii pi rally when you view them in the Hermes store with champy in hard. LUXURY!!
Ohhhh! What about Frame le slim palazzo? Those are a fine pair of denim! You’ve probably tried them already though.
I have, they don’t work for me. 🙁 I feel like the Anessa is very similar, but somehow works better on me. That said, they are a verrrry high rise and I don’t always love how my tops look tucked in. And then a long coat overtop feels somewhat frumpy to me. I do like them with the short trench, tho…
Pack a sturdy umbrella! My little dainty one was destroyed by the sideways rain in the UK. The two white sneakers also look the same to my non-fashionable eyes 🙂
Have a great trip!
Yes, they *are* very similar – one has black accents, which I like with the black jeans. 🙂 Point taken, though… another style might be better! I did get a highly rated travel umbrella, but it’s bigger than I expected. I hear mixed advice on whether or not to bring one.
Do you use a travel pillow? I’m flying to London in July and I think for an overnight flight that I will definitely need one. Does anyone have suggestions for one?
Enjoy your trip!
Not usually, but I splurged on business class. If I had to sleep sitting up, I would definitely bring one. Hopefully someone can suggest a good one!
I bought this travel pillow on Amazon for my daughter for our flight to London and she said it worked great. And it was nice that it didn’t take up much space. BLABOK inflatable travel pillow if the link doesn’t work.

Thanks for the tip!
I recognize I’m not a fashion person, but here goes anyway. Have you looked at the temperature predictions for the time you are there? The weather is unpredictable, but I didn’t think it got much above the low 60s (for highs) in early May. That would make wearing short sleeves hard for me (unless it was under a sweater, but you mentioned you don’t like to do that). I wouldn’t take the green and white top (cute, but summery) or the dress (when I’ve been in London, I have always found black jeans with a nice top goes anywhere). Do you need both the short and the long jacket? I’d choose one (the black one – it’s cute and it’s also an actual rain jacket). I’m also curious why you need brown shoes/bag and black shoes/bag. I’d pick one – probably black because (to me at least) it looks better with olive. If it’s still too much stuff, I’d leave out the beige and white sweater (I love it, but it seems less versatile). I’d also choose one pair of sneakers (or if you want an additional pair, choose something completely different – like your adidas or golas, both of which are comfortable for walking and less bulky). I’d leave your hairdryer at home – but that’s me. There will be hairdryers (not as good as yours, but probably not terrible), and worst case, your hair is long enough to put up. I’d add a cashmere scarf that I’d wear on the plane. I’d also add a pair of stretchy pants to wear on the plane.
I have been obsessively checking the weather, lol! It’s very mixed, of course. They are actually expecting mid-70s and sunshine in London this weekend and into next week, but I know that will change.
Good to know that black jeans and a nice top goes anywhere. We are going to church one Sunday, and to the theater and dinner one night. Those are the dressiest events, I guess… Oh, and high tea… but we won’t have time to change after sight seeing. The floral blouse should work for that. Or the stripe sweater. I’m not “married” to the dress, even though I said it is non-negotiable. I think what I was thinking was, it is my only dress option. If I don’t bring that one, I won’t bring one. Nothing else that I have seems quite right.
I don’t feel like I need two jackets, in the same way I need two pairs of comfy shoes to alternate between for comfort/foot health. The black rain coat is a definite. I thought I might want another color jacket/coat for variety, since I will likely wear one every day.
My plane pants are stretchy, and very comfy. Definitely adding the zestt travel wrap/scarf. It is not cashmere, but cashmere-ish. 🙂
I was trying to figure out what you meant by brown shoes/bag and black shoes/bag, and then I realized, you are probably looking at the photo at the top of the post! That is not what I am actually planning. Those were the options before I pared down… that probably explains some of the other comments that perplexed me, as well. 🤪
UPDATE – I just replaced the photo at the top with one I just took after reading all of your input and paring down further. Then I packed it up, along with my toiletries, etc. — and it all fits easily! YAY!
Thanks for sharing, sounds like a fun trip! I agree with others a scarf might be a good addition, especially if the weather is unpredictable. The athleta wrap looks bulky, a sweater might be easier to pack and can be worn to lounge or wear sight seeing. I like a small backpack if I’m moving a lot & sightseeing. I like a crossbody if it’s a city vacation with mostly museums, cafes, shopping & lunches. I agree with others the sneakers look the same, I would swap for something waterproof or sandals depending on the weather.
Your point about the Athleta wrap makes sense… probably dumb to wear something on the plane that I don’t plan to re-wear as part of my outfits.. although I could wear it with a white tee under my rain coat, if it was really chilly one day.
I don’t even have cardigan in my closet to wear instead, but I still have time to shop… haha!
I travel to London several times a year for work. One thing to note – Heathrow airport is notoriously strict about toiletries in a carry on. As in, even if you have a clear quart size bag of your own, they will make you unload it into one of their little sandwich bags and they WILL make you toss anything that doesn’t fit in one. I’ve learned to carry on from the US and just check my bag on the way back to keep it stress free. This is the only international airport I’ve had this experience in.
Also, recommend going light on toiletries and OTC meds – find a Boots in any English town and stock up on what you need when you arrive.
I am an airhead. I just realized, I only have to worry about the toiletry bag at Heathrow on the way HOME. I will definitely just check my suitcase, then. I plan to use the Flex feature, anyway, so I can shop there.
Don’t feel bad, it wouldn’t have immediately occurred to me either! Here’s an alternate idea, assuming the toiletries are the only thing about it making you consider checking your bag on the way back. Could you decant them into cheap plastic containers that you don’t mind tossing on your last day? Obviously you wouldn’t discard makeup. But maybe losing your shampoo and skin care containers would be enough to make the makeup fit in the small bag Heathrow allows? Especially if you’re just taking minimal makeup. Hate to see you have to check a bag just for this reason if you successfully pare down everything else! Obviously it’s not that big of a deal, but you’ve worked so hard on this I hate for the toiletries to ruin your triumph! Lol.
Yeah that also occurred to me. Some will be empty or I won’t care if I trash them. But was figuring I’d probably want to check my suitcase anyway – it’s the flex and if I shop and need to expand it, I’ll just check it on the way home.
I’ve been to the UK several times, though not in May (March, June/July & Sept.), and the weather can be unpredictable. I don’t envy you trying to do carry-on only! I’d definitely omit one pair of white sneakers & bring sandals or another flat—those will pack smaller too. And I’d bring another pair of pants that aren’t jeans that you could wear for evenings or dress down for day. Maybe sub out the black jeans, if you’re short on space? I’d also leave hair tools at home—they’re heavy & take up precious room in your bag. And no need for a steamer! I also like the suggestion to bring a cardigan for an extra layer. My issue overall with the capsule approach is that it tends to remove most of the fun or color from your/one’s wardrobe, so I’d add in another nice top with a bit more spring color. I also love scarves, as someone else mentioned. For shopping, make sure to visit M&S (Marks & Spencer)—lower priced but nice quality high street store. Two of my favorite pairs of jeans are from there!
I had a bright color top I was considering… for that reason. No reason not to have color, since all my bottoms and jackets are neutrals. I took it out when I was doing the graphics last night, and realized I had 8 tops! I was also debating my short pink Vince cardigan, if the weather is colder… it’s a little dressy but also warm.
I just got back from a trip to London. The weather was unseasonably warm there-it rained on our last day but otherwise sunny and beautiful but a bit chilly. I hope for the same for you but yes check the weather a couple days before you go and you will be fine. My biggest tip is that the UK uses a different electrical plug than the rest of the EU. They use a type G (I think) but it is different than the type C that the rest of Europe uses. I found out the hard way!! Be sure and check that before you go so you can use your electrical appliances. Have a great trip!
Ooooh, I did not know that. I thought I was all set from Italy. Thanks for the tip!
Here’s my two cents as I’ve traveled quite a bit now to European destinations……you’ll be on the go (and will sleep well at night). Comfortable shoes and layers you peel off as the day goes or the weather changes in one day. I usually don’t use an umbrella (pack it and it stays in the suitcase, just one more thing to track/carry or poke someone in the eye because you all are too close together in line or in a metro area…..I’ve been on the receiving end of that because whoever wasn’t paying attention and stopped abruptly in front of me and I make sure I have a good rain jacket with a hood instead. It could be a quick transition to dinner and you just have to have things you like and feel good in (you can still be on trend but it’s not a fashion show)….and lastly remember pretty much everyone else is a tourist too, you can do all of the fashion stuff when you return :). I like a shoulder bag whatever size that acts as a cross body bag so my hands are free (large tote has to have long removable strap). I’d be more concerned about clean under ware and socks when I’m on the move…..lol. Minimal skin care and make up……you can do all that stuff you when return (I’ve never noticed in pictures later and said OMG who’s that). Once in Ireland and in one 24 hour day sunny, windy, rain and snow (and this was in June and this was not in Northern Ireland). Have fun……everyone in your group had their first time too!
I’m glad you have the travel dryer and flatiron. My son lives in Spain and I fried my Revlon Air brush because it isn’t dual; even though I had the adapter. Ughhh. It was awful. I like your organizational thoughts and can’t improve on them -ha! Let us see the suitcase as it gets packed; I would love to travel lighter. Slightly off topic: is it okay to wear a top more than once IF no spills, stains, odors? True confession: I do – but am I being gross? 🙂
I wear my tops multiple times without washing… if it isn’t stained, it’s fair game to go back in my closet. 🙂
What great job you’ve done. We are headed to Ireland soon and I will use your capsules as a template. Thank you for all your hard work!🥰 Having traveled internationally frequently my only thought not mentioned already would be your crossbody choice. I much prefer a crossbody with an outside slip pocket for your phone. As you will be taking tons of photos, it can be such a pain to have to open up your purse to fish out your phone every 2 seconds. Have the BEST time!
Carry-on only traveler here. I agree with others who recommended dropping one pair of white shoes. The weather will be unpredictable and I would want a pair of waterproof shoes and probably a black pant (lighter material than denim) that I could count on if it’s a rainy day. Jeans will take too long to dry and there’s nothing worse than wet feet! The white and green stripe top looks too summery to me. I would swap out for a different neutral top. I’ve been tempted to pack the Athleta wrap but it’s very bulky. A cashmere wrap/sweater could provide warmth and comfort on the plane and would also look polished when sightseeing. A colorful scarf can add some interest to your capsule. I sometimes will just add a few different pieces of jewelry to spruce up an outfit. I truly enjoy traveling light around Europe as I feel like I blend in well with a polished, minimalist look.
Hm, maybe I need to wear the black Athleta cargo pants instead of olive, more versatile? I might look for a cashmere cardigan… I like that suggestion, that a few others made as well.
Yes, black is so forgiving when traveling and if it gives you more outfit options once you’re over there then that’s a win! I’ll be curious to see if you find a nice cashmere topper as I could use a new one as well for upcoming travel.
If you use compression packing cubes you’ll be able to take more items than you have in each capsule (adding one or two sweaters from your cold weather capsule). If your not familiar with them, please go onto Amazon and you will find lots of options. They are a GAMECHANGER! If you are worried about wrinkles, simply take Downy Wrinkle Release.
I do have cubes! 🙂
Make sure you try them out first. I find I can’t pack nearly as much with cubes (even after watching tons of videos on them) and I hate them organizationally…
Packing cubes: I think it depends on the person and their packing style/level of organization. I spend a few weeks in Australia every year (family lives there) and cannot comment on COO packing, but I swear by my packing cubes. My (huge) suitcase was designed to fit them “just so” and I fit so much more in when using them. More importantly, as you move from location to location, you will always know exactly where everything is. EG: This is my underwear; these are my tops; here are my swimsuits, etc. You will spend no time re-packing between your stops. You will be able to just toss the cubes back in your suitcase and move on. Mine aren’t compression. Although, I do have some of those for when I am just going on a weekend trip and packing in an overnight bag. Keep in mind that if you compress everything, you will be able to fit more BUT it will weigh more. Since getting my first set of cubes and using them, I have never packed without them again. I leave everything in the cubes when I get to each destination and always know where everything is. To my crazy eyes, my husband looks like he just has a jumble of clothes each time he unpacks. HAVE A WONDERFUL TRIP!!
I wouldn’t take anything sleeveless, but add a couple more short sleeve options. Based on the forecast it’ll be in the 60s, but cloudy and chilly and by the coast it’ll be windy, cloudy and chilly.. it’s only usually hot for a week or two at the end of July. I wouldn’t pack a ton of OTC items, Boots is everywhere and will have anything you might need. An umbrella is a MUST, as is the hood!! Have a wonderful time, England is amazing!!
I like the look of the lululemon rain coat a lot! If you posted about it before I missed it.
As someone who runs cold, I second the comments suggesting a light packable down layer, especially if your itinerary isn’t going to allow running back to the hotel mid-day. In fact, I purchased the (quite affordable) uniqlo ultralight one blustery March visit in London, a few years back. It fits in a day purse and disappears under coats.
Not a bad idea… I suppose I could shop for that there. I am getting there a day before the trip starts. I would want the collarless one, and it’s sold out online. I assume this is what you mean?
Moncler has a beautiful style like this as well!
I’ve heard amazing things, but the price….. which one do you have?
I know…. “but the coat” is my response to “but the price”! It’s surprised me how much I’ve worn it; it barely weighs anything, not a time goes by that someone doesn’t comment on it’s beauty. So great and unique. I messaged you mine and a few other options.
Haha, you know me. I can be convinced… I just never quite saw the need for it, for me. Maybe I need to see it in person. I know Susie Wright loves hers.
Agree! Grabbed one last fall and worn it a ton. It’s a forever coat.
Ha! You know I love you girl!
Yep, that looks like the current version of what I have from a few years back, also collarless to layer easily. It’s quite light/thin so just adds a bit of extra warmth. And you definitely won’t worry about keeping this one balled up in its pouch for days if you forget about it 🙂
I like that it’s collarless. Collars bug me! 🙂 And under a rain coat, it looks like it would be less obtrusive.
I would definitely bring a scarf easy to put on/take off (the tube is hot!)and they don’t take up space plus they give you a pop of color or print) a waterproof rain coat with hood(umbrellas are a pain and mine broke in minutes because of the wind), waterproof super comfortable shoes. Ditch the hair dryer and bring minimal skin care/makeup. Merino wool tee would be a good edition. We walked 20-25,000 steps everyday. The lighter the luggage the better!
I just got back from 8 days in Paris and the forecast actually changed while we were there. I would do a combination of the 2 capsules or pack things you can layer. It was damp in Paris as it might be in London if it is raining and you will feel colder. I admire your skills in COO. I checked a bag that was at maximum weight and my carryons were so heavy coming back. Luckily they did not weigh them.
I am living vicariously through you. I traveled to England 2 years ago, and it was awesome. Like other commenters, I’d ditch some of the t-shirts and add a neck scarf – it’ll keep you warm, if needed, or you could tie it on your purse. We walked about the Cotswolds too. I didn’t know we’d be walking through cow pastures, so our shoes were very muddy and dirty; I left them in England. Like you, I packed a similar raincoat, and my optional outerwear was a blazer. I know I don’t wear blazers, but I could layer those. Lessons I learned – traveling first class on trains allows you floor storage, but on some trains, you’ll have to place your bags above your seat, and the space is smaller than in the US. Also, in some smaller towns, we had to walk from the train stations into town, which was a “bit of a slog”. Taxis and Ubers weren’t easy to come by, especially in the Cotswolds. After all the walking we did, I was happy to ditch my poo-encrusted shoes. Lastly, I was gobsmacked at the size of the liquid bag at Heathrow. It’s about the same size as a US sandwich bag.
LOL! Poo-encrusted… the other option is my black On Clouds. I don’t love them with jeans, but they would be great with the cargo pants on more casual excursions.
Maybe you could pick up a pair of ankle height rain boots when you get there? Might work well for traipsing thru wet (and apparently poo filled!) fields! Glad you’re getting such good feedback, I would’ve never considered the need for poo-proof shoes!
I think your list looks pretty great! I am always cold, I would add one of those ultra thin long underwear layers (like the cuddli duds brand,) just in case it’s colder than expected. They take up zero room and you can’t see them under your shirts because they don’t add bulk.
-another consideration I always have (I don’t think you’re interested for this trip but just in case you overlooked,) is workout clothing. One outfit (tights&tank) also packs really tiny and can easily be sink washed/ dries overnight, you can get in several workouts with only one outfit.
I hope you have a great time!
SO much to think about when packing for a trip! 😄 I am just looking forward to hearing more about the details of this one and seeing pictures while you’re there. I signed up for Shelly Wildman’s email newsletter for notices about future trips.
BTW I only received your Substack email today (not the regular one so it all is working! 😘) Yay!
You know I have to comment as COO is my jam! LOL. I think your cooler weather capsule will serve you better as it is a hybrid of warm and cooler weather clothing. I’ve been to the UK twice in May and there were days both times I was downright COLD, even while wearing several layers! It’s better to watch the “feels like” temps than the actual since the weather is influenced by the sea, which is never too far away. I also recommend that you look at similar latitudes in the US for comparison and dress accordingly — London’s latitude is like Boston, Minneapolis or Seattle. And finally, I usually try to find a live webcam in the city I’m visiting and monitor what people are wearing at various times of day for a week or two before to guide my packing. Sometimes I can even find a fashion cam! All that being said, sometimes I miss the mark and I have to buy an item or two.
As for your actual items, I think you need some type of mid-layer that can mix and match with most items, fits under your trench and can be taken off later if it warms up. It’s chilly in the morning, and I don’t think you’ll be warm enough with just a shirt and your trench. Maybe a knit blazer? I just bought one from Quince and I took it to Spain in February, Japan in March and last week to Ashland, Oregon. It was warm like a sweater, but more fashionable. Also, I don’t know if your traveling pants from Athleta feel cozy enough, but I always bring my Viori joggers so I have something cozy to relax in at the end of the day or wear to breakfast in the morning. Sometimes I use the joggers as pjs if I’m pressed for space but I love to have something warm & comfy at the end or beginning of the day.
I noticed some comments from others about your shoes. Your graphics only show one pair of sneakers and one pair of ballet flats. I think that you’ll be fine with just two pairs as long as you can walk many steps each day in either pair, but sometimes I bring two pair of sneakers if I have room, one being waterproof for wet days. Wet feet are the worst! This year I averaged around 20,000 steps/day on my two international trips and it was essential to switch out my shoes for overall comfort, more than fashion.
Have so much fun! I hope your share your itinerary, and post along the way.
Hey Mary! I was hoping you’d chime in. There are actually 2 pairs of sneakers, the VEJA with black accents, and plain white Paul Green. But your comment cements the fact that they look too similar to bring both, haha! I really just wanted a 2nd pair of comfy shoes to alternate with the solid white Paul Green pair that I love for travel. It sounds like a waterproof pair might be a better option than the VEJA, but I don’t have long to shop and break them in.
Love the idea of finding a live webcam… too fun.
I do have a knit blazer, but it is navy, and a little bulky. What about the Uniqlo packable puffer people keep mentioning?
I will definitely post along the way! You can see the itinerary HERE. 🙂
It is April 25th and I have been wearing jeans and a vest top underneath a cashmere crew neck sweater today. I live in the south of the UK. From Monday 28th it is due to get a little warmer here. Enjoy your stay.
Good to know, thank you!
So many good suggestions here already but I’ll add my thoughts. I was in London and Oxford last year in early June, and it was chillier than I’d anticipated, even after checking weather apps constantly before I left. It also sprinkled or lightly rained off and on, on some days, which kind of chilled me as well. I wore one of two lightweight jackets almost daily, one I brought with me and wore on the plane; the other I picked up during the trip. Oh, and I have a very light rain jacket from Uniqlo that folds up small and brought that as well so I could slip it on over my other jackets when needed. Let me add that I only carried around a small crossbody purse when out during the day–but my husband always brought a small backpack along, where we stuck rain jackets and umbrellas. I could easily wad up my jackets and put in the backpack too if it got a little warmer. We never had downpours so what I had worked fine.
I think you are wise to bring 2 pairs of sneakers. For me, having 2 pairs let me change out each day and for some reason, my feet just seemed to need a break after a long day of walking. I took some J Crew low profile sneakers and a pair of Nike Daybreaks (which I left behind in a hotel on the trip and now they don’t sell them anymore–UGH!) but I ended up buying a pair of Gola’s while I was over there. Loved them so much, even with lots of walking. I never wore the sandals I’d brought along b/c it was too chilly. I had 3 or 4 pairs of jeans and pants but ended up wearing some wide-leg crop jeans and a pair of Maeve Colette crops from Anthropologie the most. I always pack more tops than pants and used a of comfortable but cute t-shirts, plus my jackets. I had to buy a lightweight sweater while in London due to the chill, and I also ended up needing to buy a pair of long sleeve pajamas, again b/c it was chillier than expected. Having to shop was not a hardship–ha, ha!
Ha! Shopping in London is always an option. I do think I will more likely be cold and will probably stick with the cooler capsule I have here, maybe toss in an extra white tee or something, that I can wear alone if warm or under a sweater, if extra chilly. And your point about the two pairs of sneakers is legit. My podiatrist told me that YEARS ago that is is very important to alternate your shoes, and I always make sure to have two pairs of comfy shoes to swap back and forth with traveling and doing lots of walking. I don’t even care that they look alike. I just want to have 2 options. 🙂
I think the scarf people are referencing would be something like this https://www.jcrew.com/m/womens/categories/accessories/scarves-and-gloves/wraps/oversized-featherweight-cashmere-wrap/ME263?display=standard&fit=Classic&color_name=snow&colorProductCode=CI736
Hopefully the link works, but it’s an oversized, summer weight cashmere wrap that folds up to barely anything and can even be a blanket on the plane. That one might be too fragile for that, but it’s a balance between size and weight and usefulness!
I think some ladies are talking about that and others are talking about printed ones. I am definitely adding my zestt travel scarf to my list. You all convinced me! 🙂
If you need to change shoes, take another color of sneakers not two white… you’re taking up space with essentially the same shoe.
On the baseball cap someone mentioned, that’s a totally US thing and you’ll stick out in a bad way. I’ve never seen anyone other than tourists wear them in Europe.
As far as carryon… for me, traveling with two carryons to distribute the weight, rather than one really heavy one, is much easier. You have weight evenly distributed on both sides of you for any steps, and much easier for lifting (especially if your shoulder is bothering you). And I usually check mine anyway… I’m not risking my shoulder to lift a bag overhead, totally not worth it. But I’m also ok with being “that person”… my health is more important than what others think.
I run cold and would freeze in your cold weather options, but you’re probably used to Philly cold 🙂
2 years ago we spent 3 months bicycling around Europe and I had a very paired down wardrobe. That trip I loved an athletic stretch dress in black and a long merino cardigan (more of a smartwool type fabric) We traveled for a month last Nov/Dec all over Europe again on trains and I loved my pair of stretch straight jeans, an old favorite Akris cashmere/silk sweater (light but warm) and a silk Eileen Fisher tee to layer. Also, I found that a well fitting long rain coat can hide many casual outfits and elevate them. AND you can never go wrong with a beautiful scarf. Have fun and remember that the lighter you go the easier travel will be for you.
Both options look fabulous!!! I just did a capsule wardrobe, COO for 12 days in Europe! It’s always hard to plan for unpredictable weather, but I reminded myself it’s ok to re-wear items. I did 3 bottoms, 8 tops, 2 dresses, 2 scarfs and 3 shoes!!! Your trip sounds amazing! Have fun!
One tiny suggestion….leave the steamer at home and just take a travel size spray bottle of Downey wrinkle release. Works really, really well and freshens up the outfit, too. I haven’t traveled with a steamer in years!
I right now am planning a trip for my grandson’s graduation i will be flying with just a carry on. And trying to make a travel capsule
I haven’t looked at the details of the capsules but have some general comments. As someone mentioned I believe, UK plugs are not the same as European plugs. I have both the Away Everywhere bag and the Monos backpack and for a place like London and Cotswolds travel and carrying my own stuff, I prefer the backpack. It’s tempting to take a lot but pare it down to the minimum! You ‘ll want to buy clothing or accessories in London and need room in the suitcase for purchases! I’m going to London and Oxford for 10 days at the end of May and will only take my Monos carry on and backpack.
I have been to the UK in June, and the weather was all over the place. Dressing in layers is the best so you can remove them if it gets warmer throughout the day.
Back in 2022 when all the luggage was getting lost, I had to pack a carry-onfor 17 days for a trip to the UK and Portugal in June, so I was dealing with two very different climates. It was tough, but I did it! I had to buy a suitcase in Portugal to bring back all of my goodies. 😜
The one thing I think that’s missing from your wardrobe is a pair of full length jeans. You may want a longer pair if it’s raining or cold. Can you swap out one of the cropped pairs for one of your favorite Mother, full length pairs?
The flats don’t seem very practical to me, as it’s likely to rain, and they aren’t great on cobblestones. A booty might be a more practical option. I also see that you have two pair pairs of white sneakers. Can’t one fill the need? My suggestion is to bring your most comfortable ones as your “workhorse” pair that you can walk miles in.
Three outerwear options seems like a lot to me, especially since they are bulky. Can you pair that down? I would also add a lightweight scarf that’s not on your list. It can add extra warmth if it gets windy or cold.
I wouldn’t worry about a steamer because most accommodations will have one or they will have an iron you can use. Also, can you leave your hairdryer behind and just use the one at the hotel? I always travel with my curling iron, but I use the hotel hairdryer. I definitely prefer mine, but it’s just too heavy and bulky to pack, even a travel size.
Other than that, I think it looks good! You are going to have a wonderful time in England!
It looks like you have everything covered. I did read that if you go to Buckingham Palace, you will need to wear a dress. Your striped dress would be perfect. I have been trying to get someone to go with me to England. I haven’t had any luck yet! I’m still trying! Have a Great weekend!!
I just spent 9 days in London. We lucked out with sunny weather, 60s during the day and 40s at night. If it’s overcast it will feel chillier and even more so if it’s windy which it can be quite often. Stick with your cool weather capsule. Definitely bring the cropped trench, they are everywhere. I would only wear athleisure pants for the long plane ride or lounging at the hotel, never for sightseeing. Suggest full length jeans or Mother Hustler style. I took 2 pair sneakers in different colors, one black/white (NB 327)and other dark tan suede((NB574) both treated with a waterproof spray before I left home. Also took a pair of black Chelsea style boots for dinners and the theater with black jeans. I don’t think you will see many dresses until summer sets in which for them is probably late June. I saw longer skirts with sweaters , a cropped trench and sneakers! You will be doing a lot of walking so aim for polished comfort. Enjoy your trip. You will love London and the Cotswolds. Safe travels!!
You have thought through your options really well. I think these capsules reflect your style and what you feel comfortable in. That is the most important thing.
For your feet, definitely take two sneakers, but i would choose only one of the fashion pairs and the more comfortable option you are considering. Walking whilst travelling is much harder than being out and about at home. I have found the leather of sneakers waterproof enough for that time of year and your type of trip.
Yes to packable raincoat and scarf for warmth. Ditch the hairdryer and steamer, but that may be me. There will be irons in room if needed. And local hairdryerswill take a bit longer but will still do the job.
Regardless of weather forecast, take a mixture of both capsules, since the temperatures feel so variable regardless of the degrees shown. I agree with adding a mid layer to go over tops but under jacket, and can be added or removed as required.
One random point, if you are a facecloth user, take a thin one with you in small plastic bag. Many hotels globally no longer use them, so i always take my own.
I can’t wait to follow along with your travels, and wardrobe options. Have a wonderful time.
Thanks for the face cloth tip! And that reminds me, I always bring my hair towel. #highmaintenance Haha! Yes, one of those sneakers is suuuuper comfy and supportive (the Paul Green) and the VEJA are very comfortable to me, but they don’t have as much support. I may go with the New Balance 327 instead. I need to try them on with some of my outfits. No steamer, but I did just do a packing trial run and the hair dryer fits fine, so it’s going. 🙂 Thanks for all the input!
Yes I always travel with a couple washcloths now too. Not common in Italy (although they did have in our hotel in Florence).
We travelled to London last May23- June3rd. It was definitely on the cooler end and rainy. I took a rain jacket with a hood and a denim trucker jacket. I ended up layering them for warmth. I also really needed the hood on my rain jacket, but did not need to carry an umbrella; the rain was usually just a drizzle and not a downpour, but off and on almost every day. Many, many young and old women were wearing black flare knit/athletic pants and sneakers. I wore my black flare pants almost every day because they dried much more quickly than my denim. I wish I had packed some more anti frizz cream for my hair. I ran out of my travel size and couldn’t find more.
I would love to see photos of how you actually pack all of those coats, clothes and shoes in a carry-on!! I need to start travelling with only a carry-on, but I have difficulty paring down my clothing!
I recorded a video! 🙂 I will share when I get it edited.
I’m very impressed with the outfit boards you created and I can definitely see them being very beneficial. The only piece I question is the floral blouse because in my mind it doesn’t look like something you could easily wear with denim. But, I do see how nice it would look under the jackets/toppers you are taking. Are you taking anything that will help keep your white sneakers looking pristine? I can’t imagine you shopping in England and not making at least one purchase 😉.
Oh I plan to shop! 🙂 I am staying an extra day after the tour, and that’s when I figured I’d shop. But I do have an extra day on the front end too, so… we’ll see! I’ve been thinking of a Mulberry bag. You know me and my bags… 🙂 I will check my suitcase going home, if need be. It’s expandable. 🤗
So I don’t usually worry about a few smudges on my sneakers, BUT I saw these recommended and bought them. I keep a few in my travel toiletry bag and they do work well. https://amzn.to/4cP4vr5
A Mulberry is on my current wish list along with a Celine. Next year when I go to Europe I plan to shop!
You had me at toiletries! I barely have room for clothes after my travel drug store. How did you condense?
Also, how do you pack your clothes? Flat? Roll?
Your outfits look great!
I travel COO and find rolling works super well for condensing and minimizing wrinkles. I also use some compression bags but for bigger items I generally roll.
I would pack 2 more knit, packable dresses. I would only bring one pair of jeans. Europeans don’t wear jeans like Americans. I think you will feel much more elevated if you substitute for pairs of flowy pants and dresses. Leave off a top or 2. You will certainly buy more clothes there. Consider a thermal tank top if it gets cool. Much smaller than coats but gives you another layer
I highly recommend the On Cloud waterproof sneakers not just for comfort but they’ll keep your socks and feet dry for walking miles around London if the typical rainy may weather persists. Also, you can find those Uniqlo lightweight puff tech jackets on EBay and Poshmark and they’re absolutely great for travelling and layering and take up very little space. They even have them in a sleeveless version that layers well under a jacket or blazer.
I too recommend the On Cloud waterproof sneakers. I live in mine! Comfortable, waterproof and love the slip in feature. Plus the all black goes with everything.
I feel a solid black dress would take you farther. Especially for nights out.
I’m from UK have lived in US for many years and visit the UK at least once a year, packing has become an obsession for me 😬. You’ve done a great job with your capsules. Here’s what i recommend….take 2 cardigans, one being the moncler jacket (Susie wright) it’s a cardigan AND a puffer brilliant! I’ve gotten a lot of wear out of it. You can layer it under your raincoat or wear it alone. Your jeans and tees/ blouse r good. Maybe the dress if u have room. Everyone wears wide leg pants and sneakers, I’d definitely take the black athleta cargo pants they’d fit right in. I do take a baseball cap and look totally out of place in my hometown 🤣but it keeps my head warm
and dry! The weather is completely unpredictable it could be cold for 3 days, hot for 3 days and pouring down rain for 3
If you layer you’ll be fine. Have a great trip I can’t wait to see where you go!
I love the capsules you have created, especially the warmer weather capsule. I would just switch the olive cargo pants for your black cargos. That will give you an option of legwear that will cover your ankles. Maybe a silky-soft long sleeve tshirt (maybe a pima cotton) to wear on the plane with the cargos and it would give you another long-sleeve option, if it gets chilly. Have a great trip!
Wow …comments
Late to the party !!! Love London my favorite travel spot!!! Went last year in February… good shoes two pairs …
Black travel pants .. two sweaters..
Two jackets one packable hooded …
Skip dress .. nice black pants fine for theater and tea..one pair jeans.
Hv so much fun !! Can’t wait to follow along. Please rest your shoulder!
I know the one thing I never travel without and didn’t see in your capsules is flip flops to wear in the hotel room. I don’t want my bare feet to touch the carpeting or the cold floors!
Yes!!! I was packing in my trial run today and I realized I forgot those. I always pack those too.
I was just in London and Paris 3 weeks ago. We had sunny skies and 57-65 degree temps. Your capsules look great. It was jeans and sneakers everywhere! Every style of denim was seen. Sneakers because you need function first. I also saw every type of jacket. I had a thigh length khaki trench and belted denim jacket and I was actually warm and took my coats off almost every day. With all the walking we did I got very warm. I had a combination of long and short sleeve tops and light weight sweaters. Enjoy your trip…you’re going to have a great time!
So many good suggestions! A few more random non fashion “tips” – the trains leave fairly quickly so it’s important to be able to grab your suitcase and get on fast, bring one of those little tiny fold up shopping bags to throw in your purse for purchases, and it’s actually not “high” tea, it’s “afternoon tea” (high tea doesn’t mean what people here think it means)…and make sure to enjoy lots of scones with clotted cream and jam!! 😊
Travel outfit is wasted if the pants are not being reworn. Id just wear jeans on flight as its not exceptionally long and pack a pair of tights to “lounge” in, do any active things ( you might want to go for a morning walk). I always pack a pair of tights and always wear them. I think you have too many tops but I’m guessing you are not going to wash and rewear. The “cold” option i would do the same as the “warm” one , just put in an extra layer. You could just wear shirt, cardigan, black coat, England in May shouldn’t be freezing and if it is they have shops. Ditch one pair of sneakers and have the ballet flats as a pair you can walk in. Not sure where in England you are going but cobblestones shouldn’t be an issue, they have footpaths. Also ditch the just in case pharmaceuticals and just go to boots. Use the hotel hairdryer
I think you have a nice assortment of items and more than enough for the number of days you’ll be gone. If you want to consolidate, I’d drop the Athleta wrap since you already have 2 jackets/coats that you’ll wear when you’re out and about. I do agree with what others have said about scarves…your outfits in pictures will be all about the coat, so a scarf helps to add some color and interest and warmth. Having boring and dark coats in my first cool weather trip to Europe was my biggest mistake. But, I like color so there’s that.
One thing I do is prepare a spreadsheet of each day and have 2 outfits planned–1 for sightseeing and 1 for dinner. Sometimes they are the same and sometimes not. I make sure I don’t pack anything that won’t get worn at least twice in a week’s time. Don’t take in case items.
I have the Pranyama wrap and agree how cozy it is to wear! Also agree that it isn’t as practical for this trip since you won’t likely wear it out and about. I purchased a cashmere full zip hoodie and used it as my comfy layer on the plane when we travelled to London and it worked out great. Could also wear it out and about and feel more polished. I have one from both Naadam (slightly thinker) and Quince and I believe I took the Naadam one with me to England.
So many helpful suggestions and great ideas. Definitely a post I’ll refer back to in the future.
Funny. I was just coming to this conclusion as well. I’ve ordered a few options.
What do you do when you pack a capsule wardrobe that’s very small and you get a bad stain on something that won’t come out while you’re traveling?
Tide to Go wipes work pretty well, and a lot of people bring laundry detergent sheets so they can wash something in the sink, if need be. I’ve never done that but I might bring some on this trip. And with 7 tops and 3 pairs of pants, even if I stain something badly, I can still get by without one of them. If all else fails, I can go shopping!
I travel with Shout wipes. They get everything out if you treat the stain fast enough. I always have them in my purse too. The travel ones come in single wipe packs. Even my husband keeps a pack of them at work.
Good to know!
I used to leave in England and travel there a lot. You have a million pieces of advice and the weather there will be similar to here (I live in Hershey) but won’t get as hot. The thing I wanted to mention is that if you’re walking around London be prepared for your white sneakers to get filthy which has happened to me many times. If I’m sightseeing, I won’t wear sandals anymore as they get so gross. Have a great time!
That is good to know. Both the Paul Green and the VEJA are over a year old, so if they get filthy, and I need to replace them later, so be it. I’m also bringing those leather sneaker wipes. 🙂
Another thing, I always pack my shoes in plastic bags so that the dirty shoes don’t touch anything in my suitcase. Poo!
I was in London for 4 days last May and had to shift my capsule several times right before traveling because the temperatures kept rising! I ended up wearing sneakers every day because we walked miles and miles. My bestie got complements on her cute NewBalance “trainers” one day. Haha! I did have one nicer pair of shoes to swap out for when we went to nicer restaurants. I took a trench and was sad that I didn’t really need it. We had 4 days straight of sunshine, but I think that is pretty rare. When I was there in July years ago, it was so cold and rainy I ended up buying a thicker layer while traveling. So my advice is, watch the weather forecast every day until you go and swap in/out as it changes!
Yes, for sure! Good to know about the New Balance. I’m going to try them on with a few of my outfits and see what I think.
Just returned from Scotland and found I alternated between my two pairs of sneakers (NB and a pair of white leather ones) every day. I think I only wore flats once and my feet were so cold! I second packing a neutral scarf just to mix things up and for a little extra warmth. I brought three pairs of jeans but wish I had swapped a pair out for a wide-leg as well – I think someone else mentioned that. That was my one reget. Have a fabulous trip!
Thanks, good to know! I’d love to hear more about your Scotland trip.
Highly recommend a trip to Edinburgh! It’s such a beautiful city — so much history and incredibly walkable. My son goes to college in St. Andrews so we’ve been fortunate enough to get over a couple of times (and hopefully more to eventually explore the Highlands in the future). We did spend part of our time in St. Andrews too with lots of college students, so maybe that’s why I was wishing for the wide-legged jeans – lol! The green gum-soled sneakers were EVERYWHERE! I almost brought them but didn’t at the last minute because they aren’t as versatile with outfits.
Hi! I love your blog! For more travel ideas with carry-on only, you might want to check out the Travelfashiongirl.com website. She has lots of great tips and information for travel anywhere in the world, to include which shoes and accessories to take.
Check out YouTuber DanaBerez. She has an excellent video about her recent trip to Paris. In it, she explains what she did wrong in the past and how to pack sensibly. She’s very stylish, like you. Oh, and she’s very young, but I found her packing suggestions to be very good. For example, when visiting Versailles, she wore a dress the first time and was freezing. She recommends wearing many layers for Europe in the spring. There are also many tips on how not to look like a tourist (don’t carry a water bottle or wear a baseball hat). A scarf is a must. Perhaps a visit to Burberry would make a memorable souvenir.
What suitcase do you like for carry-on?
I usually use the AWAY Bigger Carry-On, but I bought the Flex for this trip, so I can expand it and add shopping to it and check it on the way home, if need be. The AWAY bags are really nice quality, roll well, hold a lot, and they look nice too. But my advice is to get an unusual color. There are SO MANY now, it’s hard to pick yours out of the lineup, and sometimes even the carry-on has to get checked on smaller planes.
Thank you so much for your packing list info. We leave for 12 days in Europe in June. Just ordered 3 things you showed. You are costing me money! 😊
Have a great trip!
LOL! Glad I could help! 🙂
A trip to London is so exciting! And planning is part of the fun. I think you have a great start. I see that many have recommended ditching one pair of sneakers; however, you will be walking for miles and miles. If your feet need a change – and many people are just like that – then you need two pair of sneakers. When I go COO, I find that socks and underwear need space consideration. I take a few pair and plan times that I can hand wash them in the hotel room so I don’t need so many.
Yes, there are pretty much two hills I will die on for this trip. I need 2 pairs of sneakers, and 2 pairs of jeans. Ok, make that three hills – I will bring my hair dryer. LOL! (Now, if I was REALLY stuck for space, I would consider ditching the hair dryer… but I’m not.) It makes life much easier and less stressful when I have my own.
Also, yes, underwear and socks are a whole other packing cube!!! (Or I use them to stuff my sneakers or extra purse.) At least we have laundry facilities at our place in the Cotswolds.
I can vouch for Vessi’s! I have the court style in off-white with black accents. Just received them for a trip to Banff/Lake Louise next month for sight-seeing days. I wore them all day yesterday walking around cute little towns in NC and for a short hike this morning. I was impressed. Love the gum sole and they weren’t slippery at all. As far as London, I was there for a week in November and we had mild weather but very happy with my outerwear choices because we were almost always in a jacket!! So just make sure you like the way your jackets/bottoms/shoes look together for pictures. And I hear you about wide-leg jeans…they look so fun and fashionable in person but in pictures (that aren’t elaborately staged ;-)) they make me look frumpy. Have a fabulous time!! London is magical and so is Iceland!! You’ve got a great travel agenda coming up:-)
I travel to the UK often, and you are wise to pack everything in a carry on. My first impressions are you have two many tops, and you’ll be fine with one pair of jeans. Shopping is great fun in England so you should plan on adding a new piece of two. Too cold? Buy a lightweight cashmere sweater! And if you need any medications just go to Boots, they carry everything! I’ll be going back in late May, and my potential wardrobe, like yours, revolves around the projected weather forecast. Bring a scarf or two to add some color and to stretch your wardrobe. I do like a lightweight vest over a white shirt, happy to see that trend return!
England in the spring can get really cold and rainy. T
This country has the highest incidence per capita of arthritis of any country in the world. You need one HEAVY sweater and a packable rainsuit with hood, in addition to a telescoping umbrella. Brits call their damp cold climate’ s weather “beastly” for a reason. Spring is usually raw in England. Summer is pleasant.
Super late to the packing party but I just wanted to mention a Reddit resource: the Sub-Reddit “her one bag” ( no spaces) literally has a thread titled “10 Days in England in May”…i just searched Reddit for “ what to pack for London in May” and it came up. There are a few comments from locals which you might find helpful.
To give yourself an extra set of pants, I would switch out the green Athleta pants for the black ones. I style my black ones as you would trousers – with the JK sweaters or the striped BR sweater with the Paul Green Sneakers (one of my go to outfits for traveling in NYC). I think taking the black pair instead of the green would give you a bunch more outfit options.
Yes we are staying in Edinburgh and also visiting the Highlands. So excited.
Wow! So many comments and great advice! I am with you on needing two pairs of good sneakers to swap out. That is the only way my feet stay happy. I would ditch the flats for sure and probably the dress. If you have a day of all day rain, you will really appreciate having a good waterproof shoe option. I think the black Athleta pants over the green is a wise choice. I would absolutely add a lightweight cashmere cardigan if possible. They pack up small but add a lot of warmth as a layer or on their own on a non-rainy day that’s not too cold. But the #1 travel clothing advice I have is to take two jacket/coats that can be layered easily with each other. I love the short trench but question if it’s a practical option. I think the raincoat is a must and then I’d look for a thin lightweight down or insulated jacket that can be layered under the raincoat. That will give you options depending on how cold, how windy, and how wet it is. It may not be as fashionable but what good is fashionable if you are miserable due to weather issues? We were in the Netherlands, Germany, and France last November. The forecast changed after we arrived without our heavier down puffer jackets. We layered sweaters over long sleeve shirts, topped with down vests, and raincoats as the final layer every day and were barely warm enough. That proved to me that no matter how carefully you plan you have to have good options for layering because weather is just too unpredictable!
I’m Late to the game but when I went to London in May years ago I was so cold the whole time. I’d take two sneakers for sure and if it was me I’d add another denim wider leg. I like variety. Scarf yes for warmth if needed. Not sure if it rains how much use you’ll get out of the flats. The Athleta pant is so thin and rolls up nice I’d take the black and olive. They will look stylish there with your sneakers. 😉Why don’t you leave the short trench and wear your long trench on the plane?
Your trip sounds fabulous! Last summer I went to Europe for 3 weeks and managed carry-on only! We went to 5 different countries, including a bike and boat tour down the Danube River one of the weeks. Instead of a hard-sided suitcase, I took an Osprey travel backpack with wheels. It has a telescoping handle like most luggage and if I wanted to (over cobblestones, for example) I could use the backpack straps option. I was able to fit a lot in it because it was soft-sided instead of hard. I also brought a foldable duffle that zips into a flat little square. We used it for clothes when we checked it on the way home and carried our treasures we found on the trip in our carry-on. I packed a thin wind breaker that came with its own little pouch which took up no space. I didn’t take a large tote/purse, but found a travel cross body bag (great construction/ zippers to discourage pick pockets) that flattened to pack and a black Samsonite day pack with pretty gold zippers as my personal item. I had a flight attendant complement it, it looks so nice. It holds a TON!! In it I included a thin cotton piece that can be a shawl, blanket on the plane (I used it!!), something to sit on the ground with or a beach/swimsuit wrap. It rolls up great.
All my clothes had to mix & match & I only brought one pair of sandals and one pair of white leather sneakers (wore them on the plane).
I probably would do the same thing again. And I bought a few fun pieces in Vienna too. If you need something over there you can always pick something up, as tragic as that seems (wink wink)! Hope you take us all over with you on the blog. Have fun!
Haha, yes, so tragic! It sounds like you nailed it!
While everything you packed is practical, I will echo everyone who mentioned the scarf of some kind for warmth and color. I also think you need something bright up top for at least one day. In Italy, you had full sun shining on your neutrals and a tan, plus lighter-colored backgrounds for pictures. If you can replace your black coat with something bright and cheery, I think that would be good.
I did France in January years ago and purposefully chose a robin’s-egg blue color lined rain coat. Best thing ever. Every single picture ended up being either outside some landmark or inside but still damp/dreary, and it is just easier to wear the coat than constantly have to carry it or stuff it in a bag. All our pictures I’m in the blue dressy rain coat that went to my knees.
Side note, my friends I traveled with all had black, and our pictures they looked like one black amorphous blob of bodies — with me sticking out in blue, but in a good way, LOL. The black just sucks the color out of photos in a group setting. The details just don’t show up in dimmer lighting/overcast weather.
That is a very good point!
I noticed most of the jeans are straight leg. You focus a lot on flairs on your blog. Is the reason bc you can wear them with athletic shoes and ballet slippers? Just wondering. Thank you!
Yes, I just feel like the straight ankle jeans are more versatile and also a little more elevated. I know I’m a tourist and I’m not trying to blend in, but I also feel like flares have a more American feel to them. And I’m trying to keep it a little more classic for this trip.
I’m also leaving for England (Cotswalds, Chelsea flower Show , etc) with a Womens travel group May 13- 23! This blog appeared at a perfect time. I will bring a carry on and a regular suitcase. I purchased a nylon back pack that folds into itself and a raincoat that also can fold up into itself. I noticed that your colors are darker (black jacket and pants, etc..) than what I have. Do Brits tend to wear darker colors?
How fun! I’m not sure about what Brits wear but I just like those colors. 😊 They’re easy for me to mix and match and don’t show dirt as easily.
Fantastic post as always! Packing for a European trip can be tricky. Not that you asked my opinion, but here are some thoughts as I go to Europe/Italy every year since I have cousins there. Europe is significantly more picky about the weight & size of your bag than US. If you can pare down even more to a “standard” carry-on that would be better. I tried the bigger carry-on and got constant grief when I flew and ended up checking it every time. Portugal is the worst. Also, there is more humidity and chiller weather in England. I freeze every time I go so your selections are spot on. Layer up! Unless it’s end of July/August, it will be chilly. I always par my shoes down to 2 and I only take 1 coat. A scarf of some sort is a must. You appear to be all set and i wish you an amazing trip!
Check out Marks & Spencer’s ….. a department store with nice variety of different things and great deli food for casual meals. The UK is pricey with the exchange rate . Enjoy your trip!
This podcast is about 2 sisters’ experiences with a walking tour in England. It’s possible that their tour was very different but there may be enough of an overlap that some of their tips could be useful. https://gretchenrubin.com/podcast/insights-hacks-and-adventures-from-our-hiking-trip-in-england/
Thanks!
Hi JoLynne!
I’m excited for your trip and love your capsule. I wish I were going! I went to Scotland in September with similar weather. The only thing I might suggest— another pair of pants. 10 days and 2 pairs seems low, unless you use your travel pants for outfits too. I bought those pants from your link and love them, but they seem thin and not warm enough for England.
Oh, and I’m sure you know… the outlets in the UK are different than the EU.
Gave a great trip!!
Yes I made a note to bring leggings to wear under them. If it’s cold and I want to wear them one day. I do expect I’ll get tired of those 2 pairs of jeans by the end of it!
Hi. I am going to London this spring as well and trying not to over pack has been a chore… I love the outfits you have put together. You gave me some great ideas…
I hope you enjoy your trip and I’m looking forward to my first time in London..
Robyn Ours
First of all, if you can do without the hair dryer, I would not pack it. Not sure where you’re staying, but most places will have a hair dryer (and an iron). Also make sure your hair tools are dual voltage. It seems like you’ve packed two pair of tennis shoes, but may I suggest a pair of loafers. I love my Vionic penny loafer in tan (leather, not suede) and wear them on every trip. They are perfect for European weather with good wool socks. I’ve been to England many times, and a good raincoat with zip out lining and a few layers like a sweater (cardigan or pullover) can go a long way toward making you comfortable. I think you can probably pack most of your short sleeves as long as you have layers to go over them. I hope this helps!
Thanks, Carla! I do think I need a layer for under the raincoat.
Check the weather before you go. I personally always run cold. Many years ago I was in London in May, and it was very chilly. I was glad I had my big padded leather jacket. Now I would always pack a little fleece jacket as my layer under a raincoat.
On another trip to London
For a week, I packed three pairs of stretch, khakis and three cardigans and mixed and matched, adding scarves. I got very tired of them, but they did the job.
Jolynn, We are traveling to Europe as well at the end of summer and I am looking at carryon luggage. Will you share your luggage as well as tote you are pictured with. Thanks!
Sure! It’s all linked here: https://tapto.shop/jolynneshane/l/43670547
Hi Jolynne,
Won’t you need athletic wear for hiking, walking, exercise?
Natalie,
Hi, I did a deep dive into comments so many good suggestions. I’m going on a Rhine River cruise in October a lot will come in handy.
For me personally, I’ll be gone 12 days, I’ll unapologetically bring 3 pairs of jeans and a few leggings as we are going on a hike one day and biking day. Also visiting winery in France. We have elevates casual dinners I’ll need a few pair of pants/skirts for that as well. I also need 2 pairs of sneakers for alternating days I’ve been to Europe many times I know my feet! I’m going to invest in the Away Flex that you recommended it seems the most practical. I can’t wait to follow along your London trip.
We always travel carry on.
4 tops, 3 bottoms, 2 shoes, raincoat, merino layer for close to the skin. 2 merino socks, one cardigan and one jumper. Merino is brilliant as it can be worn for several days without washing. I take a scarf to dress up outfits. Works for me. We did 9 weeks in Europe with it and it was so easy. We have a back pack that opens like a suitcase. We easily managed our bags on flights, trains, stairs and busses.
Love it! It’s so good to have a formula to work from every time.
Looks great! I’m saving this for future travels :). Where is your personal bag from? I have the away luggage and love it!
Which one? I consider the Everywhere Bag my personal bag.
You don’t need to take a hair dryer or iron. Hotels/b&bs have them. Also we have shops here so buy cheap and leave something behind! Jeans only one, plus smart trousers.
I traveled to England on a transatlantic cruise in February and then flew to Iceland (over 3.5 weeks) so my wardrobe was more colder weather. Be prepared for rain. My carryon suitcase didn’t survive the cobble sidewalks of Bath so I had to buy a new one. I washed my clothes in the sink and air dryed while on cruise and went at a laundry that was actually outdoor near a grocery store in Gloucester area and felt comfortable re-wearing clothes. I traveled via ship, train, Uber and my rental car. Just know that if your luggage has no wheels you may want to travel more on the lighter side. Otherwise tired shoulders! Especially if you buy trinkets along the way! Safe travels!
Hi JoLynne! I think everything looks good. But, I would make sure I had a warm enough coat and some really good walking shoes because of your foot issues. Also, don’t ditch the dress because there are places like Buckingham Palace that require you to wear a dress. I’ve been wanting to go to England but haven’t found anyone to go with me yet. My husband won’t go out of NC, much less abroad!! Lol! I hope you have a Wonderful trip!!
Heading to Wales beginning of June. Trying to do the trip with just a personal small backpack and a larger backpack. Traveling around in a small car so need to be conservative with what we carry. Taking merino tops , wearing comfy black slacks and bringing another pair. Wondering about bringing short rain boots like I heard the women wear in London. One black no wrinkle skirt and one pair of black flats for dress. Wearing Uni slip on rubber doled shoes for daytime. Will bring knee length Magellan zip up jacket that has zip off sleeves hidden hood in collar and loads of zip pockets in side. Any thoughts on my choices?
Hi there,
Just wondering how these capsules served you on your trip? We are going to England and Scotland this May. Is there anything you wished you had packed and didn’t? Anything you packed that you really didn’t need? Hope you had the very best time. I am pinning these graphics to help me when the time comes. Thank you!!
You will love it! I have to say that I don’t think I really had anything I didn’t wear and I didn’t want for anything. I think it worked out just about perfectly.
