What to Wear This Fall/Winter Besides Jeans

If you’ve been here for any length of time, you already know I’m a jeans-every-day kind of girl. Denim is what I feel best in, and it works perfectly for my lifestyle. But I also know some of you like having a few casual alternatives in your wardrobe, whether you want a change of pace or you’re headed somewhere jeans feel a little too casual. So today I’m rounding up some easy, everyday alternatives to jeans for fall and winter.

Sanctuary Marine Wide Leg Crop Pants (29) // AllSaints Anna V-Neck (M) // cloth & stone Zipper Shacket (S) // Schutz Arissa Flats (8)

1. Colored Denim

Colored denim is still denim, of course, but visually it gives your outfit a completely different vibe. I’ve been wearing this rust pair a lot this fall, and it’s been a fun way to change up my look without stepping too far outside my comfort zone.

Seasonal colors like rust, chocolate brown, raisin, olive, and winter white all pair beautifully with the sweaters already in your closet.

How to style:

  • Rust or brown → with ivory, camel, grey, or black
  • Olive → with stripes or creamy neutrals
  • Winter white → with tans, greys, or soft pastels
  • Works with sneakers, ankle boots, or loafers

If you want something different that still behaves like denim, this is the easiest place to start.

2. Coated Denim (and Faux Leather Equivalents)

Coated denim is my personal favorite non-blue-jean option because it’s still denim, but it delivers that slightly dressier faux-leather look. If you like an elevated vibe in winter, or you have evening plans, coated denim is an easy swap that still feels casual and comfortable.

Think of this category as everything from coated jeans to faux-leather jeans… all the same idea, just different finishes.

Style with:

  • Chunky sweaters → for a cozy contrast to the sleek finish
  • Fitted turtlenecks → for a streamlined, polished look
  • Moto jackets or blazers → for an elevated edge
  • Chelsea boots or heeled booties → for a dressier feel
  • Sleek sneakers → for a more casual, everyday vibe

It’s a great way to mix things up without leaving the familiar denim world behind—and you might be surprised how often you reach for them once you have a pair you love.

3. Twill & Utility Pants

Twill pants and simple utility styles offer that same “throw on and go” feel as jeans, but the texture and finish give your outfit a slightly different look. They’re great for those days when you want to stay casual but not necessarily reach for denim.

I do have one pair of twill pants, and while they aren’t my everyday go-to, they’re a nice alternative when I want something a little different from denim.

How to style:

  • Striped tee and denim jacket → for a classic casual combo
  • Half-zip or quarter-zip sweater → for a sporty, modern feel
  • Crewneck sweater and Chelsea boots → for an easy fall look
  • Sneakers and a quilted jacket → for weekend errands or travel

This is one of the easiest non-denim categories to incorporate into your wardrobe, especially if you already love neutrals and casual layers.

4. Ponte Knit Pants

Ponte is stretchy, polished, warm, and comfortable—almost like leggings but thicker and much more structured. If you want something that feels as comfy as athleisure but looks more put-together, ponte is a great option for fall and winter.

How to style:

  • Sweaters and sneakers → for everyday wear
  • Long cardigans → for a relaxed yet polished look
  • Loafers or Chelsea boots → for a chic, casual vibe
  • Tunic-style tops (if the rise is fitted) → for added coverage and balance

Ponte pants are ideal for work-from-home days, travel, or anytime you want easy comfort that still looks clean and intentional.

5. Soft Pants & Flowy Trousers

This is a broad category, but the common thread is softness, drape, and comfort. These styles are usually a bit dressier than athleisure but more relaxed than traditional trousers.

Sanctuary Eloise Trouser (29) // Michael Stars Nara (M) // Sam Edelman Bianka (8.5)

Think Tencel joggers, drapey pull-on trousers, wide-leg or flowy pants, and easy weekend pants that aren’t sweats. They can be hit-or-miss for me personally, but when the fit is right, they’re incredibly versatile—and very on trend right now.

How to style:

  • Sweaters (front-tucked) → to define your shape and add structure
  • Simple tees and a denim jacket → for a casual, everyday look
  • Flats or low-profile sneakers → to keep the vibe effortless
  • Blazer → for a relaxed office or dinner outfit

They move beautifully, they’re comfortable, and they can look surprisingly chic with very little effort.

Final Thoughts

While I’m not breaking up with my jeans anytime soon, it’s always nice to have a few other options in the closet, especially in fall and winter when texture and fabric can really elevate simple looks. Whether you prefer coated denim, ponte pants, soft trousers, or something as easy as olive utility pants, even small swaps can make your everyday outfits feel fresh again.

If you’ve found a non-jean style you’ve been loving lately, I’d love to hear about it!

  1. Thanks for the great suggestions on branching out from denim!

I added two pairs of wide leg corduroy pants to my wardrobe this season; one is brown and one maroon. They are not the rugged looking cords of the past!

They are easy to wear with sweaters and boots and are very comfortable on those chilly days that are either here or arriving soon.

      1. Yes, I agree with M from MD. My newest fav is a wide-leg corduroy jean-style pant from NYDJ that I purchased through QVC. It has a nice high-rise and my normal size 10 fits great. I have a wine/burgundy color and it looks great with black, cream, olive green, navy and light grey!

          1. Go to QVC through Jo-Lynne’s blog (under Shop). Search for NYDJ Teresa wide-leg corduroy pants. #A705671.

      2. The Paige store in Nashville had beautiful cords this past weekend. I was shopping with a friend who was visiting and didn’t try them on, but I have thought about how nice they looked and might return to try them.

      3. I was thinking cords too. Last fall I bought a burgundy pair that was great for the holidays, and I just ordered two wide-leg pairs from Lands’ End, chocolate brown and “maple toffee.” Really like them. I’m wearing the maple today with an ivory, camel, and burgundy Fair Isle sweater and leopard booties.

      4. I love the corduroy pants from quince! They have a patch pocket style that is so cute! Loft and Jcrew always has corduroy too! They are everywhere right now.

  2. I’m a jeans on the weekend only gal. 🙂 During the work week, for me it’s flowy trousers and ponte pants. Elegant, polished, comfortable and suitable for work.

      1. I’ve been loving the “Everwear” trousers from J Jill. Hands down those are the best IMO. They’re softly structured, polished, and yet very comfortable, especially because they have an elastic waist (a must for me, my tummy has always been very sensitive).

  3. I’ve found myself reaching for non denim a surprising lot lately. I think the choices in stores have made it much easier to want to wear them! I’m drawn the the elastic waist pants that are drapey, but not too much volume and still polished. That’s been a bit trickier to find. Aritzia has some great options. I did finally find a coated denim pair recently that work. That was quite a hunt!

  4. I may have to buy some coated denim, now that it’s been around for yr 3. I’m eyeing the Loft Sawyer Pull On pants in satin. My waist no longer likes buttons & zippers.

  5. I thought about adding some cords to my rotation. I was Nordstrom yesterday and Kut from the Kloth had a bunch of colors. I didn’t have time to try them. What are your thoughts on corduroy pants?

  6. I appreciate seeing something other than jeans! I cannot wear jeans to work so I’m always searching for polished alternatives that are comfortable. Thank you!

  7. My weekly go to’s That can be worn at work, or not, are a chocolate slip skirt, Kut wide keg pants in cream, think they are Meg’s, and chocolate brown AG cords with a slight flare. I can wear all with elevated sneakers, flats or boots. Would like ro get one more pair of pants that are casual. Still looking.

  8. Great post, as always! While on the topic of pants, could you please recommend your favorite dark wash blue jeans in Mother denim — meaning jeans you would wear for date night or anytime you want an elevated look. I’m searching for dressy Mother blue jeans (as opposed to black denim). I’m also interested in Paige if you have a favorite dressy wash. Thank you so much!

  9. Great posts with suggestions. I am a true denim person but I do need a couple of other pants for going out to eat. Thank you

  10. Great options! I thought for sure you’d mention corduroy though. I’ve been eyeing the rust KUT jeans and now that my daugther stole my brown wide leg Wit & Wisdom, I may have to snag them!

  11. I found my burgundy straight Levi cords at Kohls–they also had it in a fatigue green color. I’d like to see some ideas for athleisure wear (complete with the sneakers too) that you can put together in the morning for a walk and still be able to wear throughout the day…looking sporty and put together. I struggle finding cute outfits along this line (even harder in the fall/winter) I do usually wear denim and reserve leggings for when I go workout..but I’d like to have some days where they work all day. I will try and find your older post with the raisin jacket and leggings. Thank you all for response to my dad and brothers service–I am indeed proud! For some reason, I could not pull back up responses to that–I swear I still don’t see all the posts when I go back to read them–they just seem to drop off and disappear!

    1. Teresa you should try the Vouri Halo Modern straight pant. They are great for athleisure. I got them in “short” length and perfect for my 5’3” height. If you want short be sure to type short after the description I wrote or the regular length pops up. I bought in black but they have other colors. I bought mine through Nordstrom not Vouri site as I wanted free shipping and Nordstrom has great return policy.

  12. Love the options. Thank you! Would you mind linking your necklace (jean shacket with fatigue crop pants outfit) for me? Also, are the Sanctuary pants true to size?

  13. Are velvet jeans in style? I noticed some on the Nordstrom website and was wondering if they might be an elevated casual option for Christmas with family

  14. I recently picked up the Kut from the Kloth colored jeans in paprika (so cute!). Since I’m in Florida, we’re only just now getting weather cool enough for jeans. With their rich fall color, how long do you think I can keep wearing them before they start to look out of season?

    1. It’s really just a matter of preference. You can wear them all year ’round if you want. I don’t see myself reaching for mine as much after Thanksgiving, but I tend to wear full length jeans once it gets really cold here in Philly.

  15. You had a lot of lovely things in your pictures! I never knew what each style pants were. Whenever someone asks if they can help me I say I m fine thank you. Now I know the difference between the Pinterest and utility pants are. I’m saving this page so I sound somewhat educated next time I go shopping! Thank you seriously for teaching me something new. Now I’ll sound more educated!

  16. I find it interesting that most all of these so-called winter pants options are featured with summery shirts instead of sweaters in the accompanting photos. SMH!
