What to Wear with Wide-Leg Jeans This Summer: Outfit Ideas & Styling Tips

I’m sure it will come as no surprise to hear that wide-leg jeans are having a moment this season! While all denim silhouettes are still out there, this is the one that looks the most current to my eye. Not everyone is excited to embrace the trend, but it’s a great way to keep your outfits feeling fresh—and I especially like wearing wide-leg jeans in the summer because the relaxed fit allows for more airflow and ease of movement.

That said, wide-leg jeans can be a little tricky to style. Between the shoes and the right top shapes, it often takes some experimenting to get the proportions just right. But once you figure out the balance, they can be a surprisingly flattering and fun alternative to straight legs and flares.

Today I’m breaking it all down—what to look for in a pair of wide-leg jeans, how to style them with summer tops and shoes, and a few outfit tips to help you feel more confident trying the trend.

The Basics of Wide-Leg Jeans

Wide-leg jeans typically have a straight fit through the hips and thighs and gradually widen from the knee to the hem.

Some styles are more dramatic than others, while others (like barrel leg or horseshoe jeans) feature a more exaggerated or curved silhouette. These wider fits are all part of the relaxed denim trend, and it’s worth trying a few to see which shape works best for your body type and personal style.

This summer, look for lighter washes like pale blue, white, and ecru—and yes, even butter yellow! These light, airy shades are perfect for warmer weather and give your outfits a fresh seasonal feel. Longer lengths are becoming more popular, but cropped and ankle-length styles are still great for summer. While wide-leg jeans are typically high-waisted, mid-rise options are available as well.

Finding the Perfect Fit

To look and feel your best in wide-leg jeans, getting the fit right is key. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Length: Wide-leg jeans come in everything from floor-grazing styles to cropped and ankle lengths. Pretty much anything goes—it’s all about finding the length that works for you and styling it in a way that feels polished, not sloppy.
  • Waist: Most wide-leg jeans are high-rise, which helps elongate the legs and define the waist—but if you prefer something lower, mid-rise styles are still out there. They just may take a little more searching.
  • Width: Some wide-leg jeans have dramatic volume, while others are cut closer to the body and gently widen toward the hem. Try a few different silhouettes to see what flatters you most. Personally, I tend to prefer styles that lean more relaxed than voluminous—they still feel current but suit my frame better.
  • Shop Around: Don’t be discouraged if the first pair doesn’t work. It often takes trying different brands, rises, and inseams to find the right fit.
  • Tailoring: If you find a pair you love that’s not quite perfect, consider tailoring. A few small tweaks—like shortening the length or adjusting the waist—can make a big difference.

How to Style Wide-Leg Jeans

Wide-leg jeans can be casual chic, office-ready, or date night glam—it’s all about how you style them.

The Best Shoes to Wear with Wide-Leg Jeans in Summer

One of the trickiest parts is finding the right shoes. Since wide-leg jeans add volume on the bottom, the goal is to balance the silhouette while keeping things seasonally appropriate. Let’s start with shoes that work well for summer.

1. Platform Sandals

Platform sandals are one of my favorite pairings for wide-leg jeans in the summer. They add height, which helps elongate your legs and balance out the volume of the jeans. Plus, they work with everything from full-length styles to longer ankle-length jeans.

#2. Leather Slides

Flat leather slides are perfect with cropped wide-leg jeans or gaucho styles. They keep things casual and cool, but still feel elevated—especially if you go for a sleek minimalist pair in a neutral tone.

#3. Fashion Sneakers

A pair of clean white sneakers gives wide-leg jeans a relaxed, sporty edge. I especially like them with ankle-length styles. Stick with a low-profile sneaker for a streamlined look that doesn’t overwhelm the outfit.

#4. Pointed Toe Pumps

For a more refined or office-ready look, try pairing wide-leg jeans with pointed toe slingback pumps. The pointed toe visually lengthens the leg line, while the slingback detail adds a summery twist. These work particularly well with full-length or slightly cropped styles that show a bit of ankle.

#5. Block Heel Sandals

Block heel sandals are a great choice when you want a little height without sacrificing comfort. They’re especially flattering with full-length jeans, and they work well for dressier daytime outfits, dinners out, or even summer events where you want to look a bit more polished.

How to Style Wide-Leg Jeans with Summer Tops

When styling wide-leg jeans for summer (or any season, really), the two main goals are to balance the volume of the pants and define the waist. Here are some easy ways to do that:

#1. Tuck in Your Top

Tucking in your top is one of the easiest ways to define your waist with wide-leg jeans. Try it with a fitted blouse, a simple tee, or a sleek bodysuit for a more polished look.

#2. Structured Jackets

Adding a structured jacket gives structure to the outfit and helps define your shape. It’s a great option for cooler summer evenings or when you want a slightly more polished vibe.

#3. Cropped Tops

A cropped top is another great way to highlight your waist and create balance. It can be fitted or boxy, depending on your preference. It doesn’t have to be super short, either—the cropped button-up I’m wearing here hits right at the top of the jeans and works perfectly.

Here’s another example with a shorter sweater that’s the perfect length to leave untucked.

#4. Belt It

A belt can instantly define your waist and add a stylish focal point to your outfit. If you have a naturally defined waist, try a belt over a tucked-in top. If your waist is shorter or wider (like mine), belting over a fitted jacket or cardigan can create the same effect in a more flattering way.

#5. Monochromatic Outfits

Pairing a top and jeans in the same or similar color creates a sleek, elongated look. It’s an easy styling trick that always looks pulled together.

#6. Play with Proportions

Don’t be afraid to experiment! Try wide leg jeans with a fitted tank or a boxy top—tucked, half-tucked, or left out depending on the length and shape. Cropped tops that hit right at the waistband can also work well to visually balance the volume of the jeans.

old stripe pullover (S) // PAIGE Leenah Ankle (29) // Splendid espadrilles (8)

You can also play with layering: try a slightly oversized shirt over a slim tank, or add a cropped jacket over a longer top to create definition at the waist. If your jeans are extra wide or long, you might want to keep the top more fitted or structured. On the flip side, if your jeans have a more subtle flare, a looser or flowy top can still work—especially with a front tuck or belt.

And don’t forget about shoes and accessories. The shape and height of your shoes can completely change the vibe and proportion of the outfit. Sometimes just switching from flats to platforms or adding a crossbody bag at the hip can bring everything into balance.

  1. I was an early adopter of the wide leg trend. I love them and will ride the trend as long as possible!

  2. UUgghh…this is a style of jeans my body type detests! I am 5 feet tall, post-menopausal due to a hysterectomy, so my waistline has disappeared! I have what some call a short-portly figure, and these jeans add unnecessary weight and girth to my frame. Tucking in a top just emphasizes my lack of waistline and the “width” of my body. These look cute on taller, slimmer 20- to 30-year-old somethings, but not for me! Unfortunately, this is all I find in stores. Hoping this trend ends soon!

    1. It is cute on everyone. Don’t tuck in, just have a top that’s just fit on the waistline, not loose, and just enough to cover your waistline. Dark colors or dark bottom tops will be great. And have the jeans cut up a little above your ankle. It will be great with little heel shoes and sneakers.

  3. I love a wide-leg crop jean especially in warm weather. So much cooler!! I have also collected several pairs of wide-leg linen or linen blend pants as well, but that’s a different blog post! HA!! Thanks for the suggestions of shoes and tops to go with them. I purchased the Gap Factory short denim shirt a few weeks ago. I plan to use it alot this summer as a lightweight jacket alternative.

4. Thank you for the very thorough tips! I appreciate you sharing options at various price points since our budgets and priorities are different.

  5. Lots of great ideas, Jo-Lynne! I wasn’t sure the wide leg trend was for me, but now I own several pair. You’re right that wide leg jeans are cooler in the summer—and summer has arrived here! Can’t wait to try some of the top and shoe combinations you’ve suggested!

  6. I’m enjoying the wider leg trouser style jeans. They suit me well and keep me more comfortable in warmer temperatures. I also tend to wear more tailored, shorter tops, so they work perfectly with this jean silhouette.

  7. I just can’t get onboard with this trend; they just make me look dumpy despite numerous attempts 🙁

Fortunately I live in AZ so jeans are just a NO until December lol

    1. Laughed out loud at your comment Joyce! I’m in Mississippi (not as hot as Arizona but ridiculously humid) and I get hot just thinking about wearing jeans in the summer!

  8. Love these outfits! I was resisting wide legs at first, but tried some in cold weather and liked them enough to get some lighter and shorter pairs for summer. I’m plus size and waistless, but I’m also pretty tall, and I’m enjoying the modern look without worrying too much that it doesn’t slim me.

  9. Good post and tips. I pretty much follow all the tips. I bought my first pair of wide leg jeans in 2023. Now I have several wide leg jeans and pants. Since I’m petite I don’t really like crop wide legs. I prefer full length.

    1. Terri, I’m petite too and completely relate to the struggle with wide leg jeans! I almost exclusively wear them with a heel or wedge. But I agree that the cropped ones aren’t the most petite friendly. For cropped jeans I mainly stick to a straight cut. I’ve also noticed that even in full length, the wide legs look better on me if they’re a slimmer wide leg (as contradictory as that sounds!) And I almost always wear them with a fitted top. One thing I’ve learned thru trial and error is that a lot of extra fabric easily overwhelms a petite frame. This is definitely a trend I feel like I have to adjust to make it flattering for me! But once I do, I like it.

  10. I just received the light yellow wide legged pants from Gap Factory. This is the perfect post at the perfect time for me. I have to figure out what to wear with them on top. This post gives me some ideas. Thank you.

  11. I have the Palmer wide leg pant from Loft and love them. I’m 5’4”, and decided to keep them nonetheless they probably are a bit longer on me. The tan pair is super cute and stylish. I wore with a pair of slides and a Evereve black tank top. I’m 62 and have a bit of post menopausal middle, but I recommend these as they are comfortable and easy to wear. Super soft too

  12. I’m short, 5 feet, & purchases an expensive pair of wide leg jeans on line that cannot be returned. They look terrible on my short frame. This article lists other options to consider when shopping. It also provides ideas to consider to help “finish the look”, by showing options (tops etc.)..

  13. I would like to join. I am a senior and haven’t found wide legs that flatter my figure. Thanks for the tips!

  14. 😐 Not really a fan of the “flood pants” look. Even the thin, tall gals look frumpy.
Higher waist and all the way to the floor look is much more flattering.
I do like the pairing ideas though. 🙂

  15. I love cropped wide leg jeans.
I have a number of different lengths and shades of denim.
I wear them throughout the year and have teamed up with many different combinations.
Autumn /winter wide leg jeans look good with chunky trainers/ankle boots .Teamed up with top/jackets/hoodies they make a great look. What ever the time of year.
    Thanks for a great article.

  16. This is a super informative and helpful post. I’m short (5’3”) and feel like wide leg jeans could be overwhelming on me…but these ideas make me confident to give it a try.
