The Denim Shorts I’m Loving for 2024

Denim shorts are a staple in my summer wardrobe, and I’ve been getting a lot of questions about them lately. Like everything else style-related, shorts trends evolve with each new season, so let’s discuss! I’m also sharing the shorts I’ve added to my summer wardrobe, and then I rounded up some more good options for you to shop.

Summer 2024 Denim Shorts Trends

This year, I’m noticing longer shorts and more relaxed silhouettes. I’m not seeing as may cuffed styles as in seasons past, but there are lots of “cut-off jean shorts” and raw hems out there, which are nice for casual everyday looks. I’m also seeing more of the clean, finished hems than I have in the past few years.

Lengths vary from short (3 – 4″ inseam) to long (7 – 9″ inseam). The most current look to me, and I daresay, the easiest to wear for most of us, are the mid-thigh (4 – 6″ inseam) shorts.

Utility details are popular, specifically the porkchop pockets, and I’m also noticing some pleated denim shorts popping up at the mainstream retailers like LOFT and Madewell.

And denim washes are all over the map, from light to dark, but most are light and medium. Also, white and ecru are trending big time right now. I haven’t seen as much grey and black, or colored options, but that’s not to say they aren’t out there. They just aren’t as popular right now.

More relaxed silhouettes and A-line styles seem to be where trends are headed, but that doesn’t mean you have to go that route. This is all just information to do with as you will!

Personally, I’m not a big fan of relaxed styles when it comes to shorts, but I’m also not feeling the closer-fitting styles that I enjoyed in years past, so I’m trying to walk the middle of the road, so to speak.

I’ve added a few new pairs of denim shorts to my summer closet this season, so I’ll share those with you below, and then I rounded up some more shopping suggestions for anyone wanting more options!

The Denim Shorts I Added to My Summer Wardrobe

I already have cut-off jean shorts that I love (the AG Becke, pictured above), so I went looking for a pair with a finished hem. I was really happy to see the AGOLDE Parker offered in finished hems this year. I ended up keeping both a blue and a white pair.

The KUT from the Kloth Jane is similar, for an under-$100 option. Speaking of the Jane, I have the ones with the porkchop pockets in a blue denim version from last year, and I like them so much, I grabbed the white pair as soon as I saw them at Nordstrom. They also have an ecru pair that I have my eye on.

For a cuffed hem, Gap Factory has this pair that I really like, and they’re a great price.

With these and the ones I saved from last year, I’m pretty much set on denim shorts for the season, but I’m always open to another pair if I see something else that strikes my fancy!

More Denim Shorts to Shop

I’ve rounded up all of those, plus a bunch more denim shorts for you to shop below. I organized them by price point, so I hope that’s helpful.

I’m sorry to hear that a family member needed ER care last night. Hope all is well!
I love these Kut Pork chop shorts from last year. I bought the blue denim ones last year and loved them. Now I’m giving the white ones a try. Thanks for finding those and so many other things we look for!

  2. I’m sorry you had to be at the hospital last night. Glad you’re home now. Just wanted to comment that I bought the AG becke shorts at your recommendation and they are sooo nice. They feel like butter. I’ll probably wear no other shorts this summer

  4. I’m enjoying the pork chop shorts and finished hems, although I still enjoy a pair of cutoffs. I clicked the link for the Jane, which was sold out in my size at evereve, but found a slightly different version on the Kut website. I really like the small zipper pocket within the pork chop pocket! Sharing the link in case you or any ladies reading like that detail too.

  5. Glad to see the Kut porkchop shorts in white, really enjoyed the denim blue ones from last year and just pulled them back out.
I repurposed my Levis bermuda shorts and cut them off for mid thigh length, worked well; bermuda length just doesnt work well for my 5’2″ body. Thanks for all your tips!

  6. Hi! I love denim shorts and have many in different washes, styles and lengths. I find myself wearing the shorter ones as beach cover ups, so easy to slip on over a bathing suit. As for actually wearing the shorts I find self-tanner on my legs is my BEST friend! HA!!

  7. I too have noticed that finished hems are trending but like many, I will continue to wear the cut-off styles I own for now. I like to pair mine with a soft, cotton blouse to keep the look somewhat refined. My latest acquisition is a pleated, off-black pair by Levi’s. Since they’re voluminous, I wore them with the slim-fitting Gap Factory tank you featured the other day in Purple Basil. Such an interesting burgundy-brown color that goes nicely with many items in my wardrobe. Even though I was wearing denim shorts and a tank top, I felt the look was modern and polished.
