Best of 2023: My Favorite Fashion Finds

Greetings, friends! I’m excited to share this post today because it’s always a fan favorite. A few days ago, I shared my most regrettable fashion purchases of the year, but these are what I consider my best fashion purchases of the year.

It’s a bit of a challenge to single out only a few best purchases from the entire year when you do as much shopping as I do, but these are all items I bought this year that I kept for my personal closet, and the ones I believe will give me the best cost per wear over time.

My Best Purchases of 2023

also wearing: MOTHER Tomcat in Oui Oui (29) // P448 John in Peony (39) // YSL sunnies // Longchamp tote

#1. Blake Taped Hoodie (S) // This hoodie was an Evereve find at the beginning of the year, and I wore it a ton last winter and into spring.

I love an elevated sweatshirt, and the colors and fit on this are sublime, but that bulky hood tends to get in the way of my longer hair, so I usually save this sweatshirt for ponytail days. I’m definitely going to make it a point to start working this hoodie into my weekly rotation.

#2. P448 John in Peony (39) // I find myself wearing street sneakers more and more, and while I’ve added some new lower profile styles to my closet recently, I still love the P448 John. This Peony color way, in particular, with the white on white textural pattern and subtle silver and gold accents is so versatile and looks so fresh and fun.

I think of these as more of a summer sneaker, due to the color palette, but I’ve been wearing them this fall and winter, as well. There are a few sizes of the Peony left at Macy’s, and the Pixel is a similar color way that’s fully stocked.

also wearing: old FRAME denim // Vince Camuto Barcellen Slides (8) // Lagos earrings & bracelets one and two // similar pendant // old AllSaints belt // Michele watch

#3. Frame Le Mid Rise V-Neck (XS) // I purchased this v-neck t-shirt after one of you, my dear readers, suggested it to me, and it fast became my go-to white tee. I had to size down to get a good fit, so keep that in mind, if ordering.

I love the sleeve detail, the shape of the V, and the lightweight pima cotton. It’s slightly sheer, but not so much that I feel the need to wear a cami or tank underneath. It stands alone nicely, but it also makes a nice base layer under jackets and cardigans.

#4. Vince Camuto Barcellen Slides (8) // These slides were hands-down my most worn sandals last summer. I absolutely love that woven knotted strap and the squared-off toe, but they’re also such a great neutral color, especially with the darker trim. The padded footbed makes them supremely comfortable, too. I really hope they bring these back for another season!

also wearing: Lazy Lake Daze tank (sold out) // P448 John in Peony (39) // Lagos earrings // Michele watch

#5. KUT from the Kloth Porkchop Shorts (6) // These were the jean shorts I reached for all summer long; I probably wore them 3 or 4 days a week! I love the porkchop style pockets, finished hems, and 4″ inseam length. Plus, they’re such a good versatile medium wash.

also wearing: Tommy Bahama linen jacket (S) // WHBM stripe top (S) // PAIGE sandals (8) // similar belt // Naghedi tote // similar earrings // Jenny Bird necklace

#6. PAIGE Leenah (29) // My go-to white dressy jeans for summer were these slim wide leg trouser jeans with the front patch pockets. It took me a while to get used to wearing this new silhouette, but I’m officially a convert, and I cannot wait to start wearing them again this spring.

also wearing: old LOFT dress

#7. Dragon Diffusion Santa Croce Big Tan (Coming Soon! to Matches Fashion) // This woven bag was such a fun find last spring, hat tip to Brooklyn Blonde for sharing on her Instagram! I love that it’s kind of under the radar, but such a lovely, high quality bag. The variations in the color of the leather are simply gorgeous.

also wearing: Frame tee (XS) // Amazon straw clutch // Kork-Ease sandals (8) // Amazon rattan earrings // Madewell layered necklace // YSL belt // Victoria Emerson bracelet

#8. MOTHER Roller in Let’s Trip (28) (similar in stock) // I didn’t wear these jeans as often as I would have liked, because I often feel a little over the top in such a dramatic silhouette, but they’re still in my closet, and they’re so much fun. Seeing these pictures of some of my favorites over the year is making me excited to wear them again!

Unfortunately, my exact pair sold out, but I think The Tomcat Roller has similar measurements, and The Hustler Roller seems to be a cropped version.

#9. Jenny Bird Puffy Faye Knocker Earrings // I discovered Jenny Bird jewelry a couple years ago, but I really leaned in this year, and picked up 3 new pieces. Her minimalist contemporary designs appeal to my style preferences, and the quality is really nice.

These puffy knocker earrings in a mixed metal design make a statement without being too large and in charge, and they’re also shockingly lightweight for such a substantial-looking earring.

also wearing: Treasure & Bond sweater – on sale (S) // Cubic Zirconia Tennis Pendant

#10. Jenny Bird Small Le Tome Hoop Earrings // And then more recently, I purchased these chunky silver hoops, along with the the Sylvie Necklace, which goes well with both pairs of earrings. These earrings are small, but they pack a punch. I love the shiny silver finish and the modern puffy design.

also wearing: similar MOTHER denim // Kork-Ease sandals (8) // Amazon straw clutch // Madewell layered necklace // Kendra Scott earrings // Victoria Emerson bracelet

#11. White House Black Market Sleeveless Notch Neck Sweater (S) // I hate to pick items for this post that are totally sold out, with nothing remotely similar to link, but I love this top so much. It came in handy time and time again when I wanted something simple, comfortable, yet elevated to wear with jeans for a casual dinner or a music event. It’s just a good reminder to always have something like this in my wardrobe.

also wearing: Vince silk shirt (S) (a few sizes on sale) // Vince Camuto Frasper Bootie (8) // YSL belt (90) // J.Crew earrings (similar) // old WHBM necklace // Tom Ford sunnies

#12. PAIGE Laurel Canyon Flares // These were one of my top sellers this year, and I also had to include them in this list, even though it’s getting very denim-heavy. These subtle flares with the medium indigo wash and finished hem are super flattering; they’re are a more classic style that I tend to grab when I want to look more dressed up but not too fussy. I linked a similar wash since mine were discontinued.

also wearing: The Reset tank (S) // Jenny Bird earrings & necklace // old AllSaints belt // YSL sunnies // Kork-Ease clogs // Coach bucket bag

#13. KUT from the Kloth Rosalyn Twill Trucker Jacket (S) // As fall approaches every year, I always look for one or two lightweight jackets, and this one was a major score. I love the boxy, cropped style that calls on the utility jacket motif.

AG Mari (29) // Marc Fisher booties (8) // Baublebar necklace // Madewell hoops // Tom Ford sunnies // YSL tote (similar for less)

#14. Rails Geneva Striped Cardigan (S) // On a cost per wear basis, this is probably my best purchase of the year. This one or the Frame Le Mid Rise V-Neck. I absolutely love this sweater, everything about it.

The quality is nice, but I also love the design with the short, cropped styling and gently flared sleeves, plus the classic camel and black stripes. It looks equally good with black and blue jeans, and it can be dressed up or down. I find myself wearing it every chance I get.

#15. Frame Twist Buckle Belt (M) // I’ve been adding belts to my closet recently, and of the ones I bought this year, I think I’ve worn this one the most and it’s the one I’m most likely to keep longterm. It’s a nice quality at a moderate price point.

This is the silver version, and this one is a good option if you’re in the market for a similar style with gold hardware.

#16. Vince Hilda Booties (8.5) // I’ve bought quite a few pairs of boots this year; I always do because I like to have plenty of options I can link for the blog, but this pair is probably my favorite… these or the Sam Edelman Usha, which is currently on a deep discount at Bloomingdale’s! I also love this pair, for a slightly higher heel.

Anyway! The Vince Hilda was a splurge, but the leather is buttery soft, and I love the almond shaped toe and low cylindrical heel. They perfectly walk the line between casual and dressy, and they’re also supremely comfortable and very walkable.

also wearing: Jenni Kayne sweater (S) // MOTHER Dazzler (29) // LØCI Nine Logo Sneakers (8) // Rag & Bone belt (M) // similar sunnies

#17. J.Crew Daphne Topcoat (6) // I also bought a few new coats this year, but this one is by far and away my favorite, and the one I’ve worn the most. I also feel like it’s the one that will have the most longevity in my closet.

I could keep going, but I’ve got to end this post somewhere! I feel like this is a good assortment of items I’ve purchased throughout the year that have earned a long term spot in my closet. (I have short term and long term parking in there! Ha!)

I’d love to know, what are some of your favorite purchases from the past year?

  1. That Frame tee is so good! I even bought a second one at the end of last summer when it was on sale so that I have a back up for when it wears out or gets dingy.

  2. I love the Gap CashSoft v-neck sweaters you tried, and bought them in two colors. My very favorite purchase, however, has been my Gap Factory utility jacket – it’s perfect and I wear it all the time.

  3. I received the Jenny Bird Puffy Faye Knocker earrings for Christmas. I requested them because I kept seeing you wear them in your posts. I also received the Dyson Corrale. Thank you for your posts! It helps to see clothes and accessories worn on someone besides the models and to get your feedback on the products! Happy New Year!

  4. My favorite purchases were all my wide leg jeans and pants. Also bootleg jeans and flare black pants, cotton sweaters, sweater blazers, corduroy blazer, velvet moto jacket and lamb leather jacket (not faux leather). I pretty much liked everything I bought except for crop flare jeans (makes my short legs look shorter) and wide leg pleated trousers. I like them but they are so wide in the leg. I’m thinking about having them altered. I noticed some wide legs are ridiculously wide that they can look clownish. I like your purchases except some not in my price range.

  5. I agree with you on the Vince boots. They feel fabulous, look different with the heel and toe design, and are very walkable. I have finicky feet, and I find myself neglecting my other boots for these! I have purchased some new Paige and AG jeans this past year in the newer style les and I love them so much. They seem to fit better now Han Mother and Frame on me.

  6. I bought #2,6,7, & 12 from your posts. Love them all. I really like the colors/styling on the P448 and they’re so comfortable ….I’ve been wearing them a lot lately.

  7. I purchased the Vince Hilda boots in black and I LOVE them. In fact, I’m wearing them right now! They are the perfect all- purpose boots. The heel height is comfortable to walk on all day long and the leather is so supple. Thanks for turning me on to these. HNY!

  8. My best list definitely includes that Kut from the Kloth jacket too. Also Madewell mid-rise stovepipe jeans, those flat Steve Madden Chelsea boots, Gap CashSoft v-neck sweaters. For jewelry my diamond studs (1 ct tw, I finally splurged) and my Tiffany gold knot ring. Also those Lagos mixed metal small caviar hoops. I don’t wear costume jewelry anymore but I do love the look of those Jenny Bird pieces on you, particularly the mixed metal earrings.

  9. My favorite purchases were high top sneakers (Vans and Dolce Vita). Now my ankles stay warm in the fall and winter without having to wear boots!

  10. I purchased the same Paige Laurel Canyon flares at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. They were a splurge for me even on sale but I have worn them several times so I am sure my cost per wear will go down over time. They are the most quality jeans I own and are very comfortable.

    1. So glad they worked out for you! Even for women who don’t wear premium denim on the daily, I think it’s worth it to have at least one pair of fabulous jeans that make you feel amazing.

  11. Favorite purchases? My bootcut and wide leg jeans come to mind, but my best score was a Katherine Kelly wool/cashmere black coat on eBay…for $71. It was brand-new with the manufacturer’s price tag still on it. Regular prce? $799! Best deal ever, even though I had to have the sleeves shortened. Worth it. The bootcuts and wide legs were from eBay too.

      1. Had never heard of the Katherine Kelly brand, just checked E-bay and there is a notch collar wool coat in color peacock size 6 that is brand new I would love to have but have a couple of wool coats that suit my needs for now. Beautiful coat!

  12. While I don’t have any of your favorites, the ON performance fleece pants I bought in black and grey are on constant repeat. They are definitely my best purchases this year.

  13. Hi, a couple things to say…..
Most importantly, THANK YOU for all you do!! From dresses to denim and everything that works and doesn’t quite work, I know it’s so time consuming and much appreciated! I’m 49 years old, I’m not really into social media, but I love online shopping and in person shopping, especially when I get a great deal on s high quality item. i hate to pay full price but I often think you get what you pay for, so I’ve tried really hard to stop buying items because the sale is good but focusing more on getting my favorite brands on sale. I wanted to thank you especially for explaining the differences in fit with the P448s. I kept buying & returning but found a John ASPRO at Nordstrom Rack for $119, now sold out, but they are comfortable and really fun and I love them! Also, you looked so gorgeous at the holiday party in Chicago and i think you made a great choice. I find formal dressing much harder than every day dressing! Thanks again for all you do & looking forward to 2024 content!
