Cold Shoulder Striped Sneaker Dress

You know how sometimes you see a clothing item over and over and you think it’s super cute but you don’t bite the bullet and order it, and it keeps popping up whenever you’re on that site? And eventually you order it and it comes in the mail and you try it on and it’s so cute and you wonder why you waited so long?

That’s pretty much the story behind this dress.

I have seen this dress over and over for months when I’m on the White House Black Market website, and I’ve always thought it was adorable. I don’t know why I didn’t order it back in the spring. Frankly, I’m surprised it’s still in stock the way retail is moving their inventory these days, but I’m so glad it is.

This sporty little cold shoulder striped sneaker dress is so easy to throw on and go. The material is nice and thick, and while it has a body conscious fit, it is more forgiving than most. My only complaint is that it’s a little on the short side. I know it’s supposed to be, but I could use another inch. This is the small, and I felt like I was yanking it down a lot so maybe I should try the medium.

This dress also comes in a solid black, if you’re not a fan of stripes, but I think the stripes make it more casual and add interest. In fact, they have a whole collection of sneaker dresses, so if you prefer more of an A-line shape or an off-the-shoulder look there are some other cute options.

I carried my red crossbody for a fun pop of color against the black and white, and I like how it plays off the red stripe in my sneakers. This bag is similar to mine and on sale! Mine is an older style; I picked it up on a clearance sale a few months ago, but the Taylor bag that I linked to is close to the same color. I like how it’s a bit of an orangey red. Oh, and you can actually get an extra 30% off with code EXTRA30, bringing this cute little bag down to $185! It’s not cheap, but for a Tory Burch handbag, it’s about as good as it gets.

I often get asked about what shapewear or underwear to wear under dresses. I was trying out these new Spanx shape my day girl shorts, and I really like how they don’t cut in at the waist, but I found them rolling on me as I wore them so I’m not sure they’re my favorites. I have the medium, so I don’t think I should need to size up, but maybe that’s the answer? I’m open to input. I went with the Spanx because I wanted some shaping benefits, but I’ll try the Jockey slipshorts next time and see if they work better for me.

I tried on my white Adidas Superstars with this dress, but I felt like they looked like nursing shoes so I reverted to my old faithful Converse Shorelines. I think the more delicate sneaker style looks better with this dress anyway. In fact, I think a more delicate sneaker style looks better with just about everything!

I kept my jewelry simple with oversized pearl earrings and gold bangles.

I will definitely be wearing this outfit a lot this summer. It’s such a great look for casual get-togethers, running errands, meeting a friend for coffee, and so many everyday purposes.

  1. I think this t-shirt dress is the greatest casual summer time look!!
I wore mine yesterday too! If you think the length is going to be an issue, I had my mom add a panel at the bottom. Mine worked great because it was a print with black, so she just added black. But maybe you could have black added on the bottom (and maybe on the bottom of the sleeves too!) I was just thinking about how it made me feel so much more comfortable in the dress yesterday!!
Either that or a dress extender??

  2. I think you look great in that dress! I’ve mentioned to you before that I hate having to tug on a garment when I’m wearing it, whether it be a top, dress, jeans, etc., so I would try the next size up.
I finally submitted a request for a Nordstrom account the other day! I’m waiting on a reply.
Question regarding handbags/purses: I have to cut down on the number that I own. Is there one color, like red, that you see as one that you can carry year round and get lots of use out of? I’m not going to be able to have lots of choices any more, so I really need to love the ones that I keep.
I need to eat some breakfast and get moving with my weed eater, so it’s time to wish you a good day!

    1. Good question on purses. Honestly, I go for the same couple over and over. I actually got a Louis Vuitton tote for Christmas that I rarely feature on the blog because $$$, but that is what I carry most often for everyday.

I use my cognac hobo a ton, and I’d use it more if I didn’t have the LV (it is brown too.) In the winter, I find myself going more for grey or black. I think if I could only choose one neutral color bag for all year round, I would go with grey, but that’s b/c I tend to wear a lot of black and grey and white and cool tones. I love that Kate Spade one in the blush but that is more of a summer bag, I think. Red is fun to have, but I use it on occasion for a pop of color, so it wouldn’t be the first bag I would buy.

I think if I could only have, say 3 bags, I would want #1 – a neutral/year round everyday size in cognac or grey, #2 – a going-out clutch type of bag or smaller crossbody in something neutral. (Honestly, I’d probably want one for summer and one for winter — I like an off-white for summer, but for winter I like black. I also love my leopard clutch, but it isn’t as versatile as a solid.) And then #3 – a fun red or pink bag to jazz up neutral outfits.

Whew! How is that for a long-winded response? Maybe I should make that a blog post. Ha!

      1. As I was reading your reply to Ginger, I was thinking that purses would be a great blog post. Jo-Lynne, I know other readers, including myself, have thanked you time and again for all the work you do to educate us about fashion, but I just have to say it again. Thank you! I have learned so much about creating outfits and because of you, I know what to think about (most of the time) as I am getting dressed. Since you are looking for blog ideas, could you do something about what accessories we should have on hand that could be used throughout the year. For example, what types of necklaces women should have to create numerous outfits. I’m glad you are back running!

  3. This dress was made for you! Hoping the medium size will solve the problem of having to pull it down all the time. Important, because I agree you find many opportunities as a busy mom, wife, girlfriend to wear it. Love, love this on you.

    1. Yeah, I’d like to try the medium before I decide. I left the tag on b/c I only had it on for 5 minutes. In all honesty, I’ve gained some weight, and I really need to drop it to fit perfectly into this size small. I have been trying to get back to whole30 eating, but every day something comes up to derail me, lol! #thestruggleisreal

  4. So cute! I love WHBM and the quality is the best, but unfortunately it comes with a higher price tag. I have purchased a few items on sale and I’m going to have to take my chances on waiting for this little dress to go on sale as well ???? But it would be a great July 4th outfit!

    1. I agree, I did pick this up during a sale. I think it was $58 which still isn’t cheap, but it’s a lot better than $84. 🙂 I do like the fit and quality so much better than, say, Old Navy, so I’ll pay a little more. I will definitely give y’all a heads-up when I see it on sale again!

  5. Super cute! I’m with Gloria, I Love WHBM, but wait for the sales. Quality is great though and I do have a few pieces going on 4 years now that look brand new.

  6. That dress is really cute on you. When I saw the caption sneaker dress I was expecting something sort of shapeless. Very cute and I love the stripes! 🙂

  7. Love this dress. I checked and it’s in stock at “my” store so I’m going by tomorrow to try it on. I think it will be perfect for a 4th event with some red jewelry!

  8. I had the same experience as you with the Spanx shape my day girl shorts. Started out fitting great but as the day progressed they rolled up and i was constantly pulling them down- not a great look. I’m pretty much the same size as you and ordered the Medium. Maybe the Large works better but I don’t feel like spending the money in case the same thing happens. The Jockey shorts don’t roll up on me at all but they don’t smooth things out as well as the spanx.

    1. Exactly, I wanted the smoothing and support, which it provided nicely. I just wish I knew why these things roll down. I have another one I like a lot and it doesn’t slide down, but it sometimes creates a line at the waist, which I hate as well, and it is too long for most of my dresses — which is why I ordered this one. Oh, the trials! LOL!

  9. I bought this dress just a few weeks ago and I get so many compliments every time I wear it! I also love that it can be dressed up with different shoes and accessories. I actually tend to wear it more dressed up than down for some reason. I love this dress!
I always struggle with finding good shapewear. I have the Bodywrap All Inclusive body suit which I love to wear with certain things, but for everyday wear, especially for summer (I live in the 100+ degree Nevada desert),
I can’t seem to find anything that gives me the smoothing support I want without rolling or being really hot. I’ve been thinking about ordering a different Bodywrap style to see how I like it. They’re a little pricey, but maybe you would be interested in trying it too. .Here’s a link https://www.bodywrap-shapewear.com/
I love your blog! I look forward to it every day!

  10. I think you look splendid in the dress!

A Nordstrom employee introduced me to TC shapewear a few years ago. Prior to this, I wore Spanx. I am short-waisted and the TC seems to fit me better.

  11. Really enjoyed reading the purse info between Ginger, Bev and yourself. I would certainly appreciate a purse blog post in the future. I work full time so don’t want to take extra time to switch out purses as an accessory, but do love seeing what’s out there with the variety you share every so often. I’ve always been one to buy a fall/winter purse and a spring/summer purse with a couple of clutches for special occasions. I try to stay with a budget of $150 or less with each purchase. I did find a cute neon green-yellow Ralph Lauren Lauren purse at Macys last fall and have made it my year round purse presently. I just love that color! The neon fares well with all the black, navy and white I wear.

    1. That is pretty much what I would do if I wasn’t styling for the blog — actually, I lie, even before the blog, I always had a lot of purses. I just like them, I guess! Ha! But I definitely have a couple I go for most often. In the winter, I found myself carrying my grey crossbody (smaller) or black satchel (bigger) most of the time. This summer it’s my cognac hobo or the rose cloud hobo. I’d have a hard time just having one go-to handbag for each season, I think, but two maybe? Haha. #addict

Anyway, it’s a fun idea for a post, and I need some ideas that don’t involve photography since I’m working ahead for vacation time. 🙂

    1. Yes, I thought the Spanx were very comfortable. That’s why I was bummed that they were rolling. I did have another shapewear piece tucked in so I’ll try them without that and see if that helps. The legs were rolling up too, tho. 🙁

  12. Cute dress. Try Yummie shorts I hear they do not roll. I plan to try them. I have some Jockey ones that don’t roll and are light weight and just a smoothing short.

  13. You look great in this dress! I think the sleeve length is much more flattering than the cap sleeve you usually wear.

  14. So cute on you. You have nice legs, so I don’t think its too short. 🙂 But, you have to be comfortable too. Love how you paired with the converse. I never would have thought of that. 🙂
